Miley Cyrus’s video for “Can’t Be Tamed”: inappropriate or fancy art?

miley-cyrus-sexy-video

I saw this on E! this morning. Miley Cyrus has a new video for her new song, “Can’t Be Tamed” and it’s… like, old-school Britney? That’s what it reminded me of, honestly – the kind of video Britney would have made circa 2004. This video has everything: crazy bird fetishes, a gigantic cage that anyone could get out of, cage dancers, chomping and crotch shots. But is it no longer shocking now that Miley Cyrus is 17 years old? I mean, are still pretending that she’s an innocent child who doesn’t have any idea how sexualized her image is? Here’s the video:

Funny story: As I was just playing this video, listening to the song as I wrote, my dog started crying. My dog has excellent taste in music.

Anyway, I don’t really see the sense in bashing Miley for this video. Did I find it appropriate for a 17-year-old actress and singer and tween icon? Not really, but it didn’t totally offend me either. Mostly, I just wonder how she’ll top her “$25,000 silver-scale corset and dress made from 2,400 metal pieces and peacock feathers” and her “dirty black angel wings”. Ugh.

    Funny…and disturbing.

  2. Missfit says:

What the? The video is cool, I’ll admit, but that’s too much for a minor of 17. It would have been alright like at 21 maybe. What is it with kids now in days? Heels are 14, having sex @13 or doing drugs. When I was 12-14, I was still playing with my barbies. At 15, ya, I had a boyfriend at school and that was the limit, only phone conversations, no kissing or groping. Now the younger, the skankier, geeze. Too many artist now in days (in my opinion) are trying too hard to be different, when they are NOT and it’s just LAME. There is really those original ones whom are naturally different and unique in their own way, but certain people can’t pull it off.

  3. A.K.A says:

I thought it was Angelina Jolie in that first pic!

  4. Wif says:

Whatever about her as a tween icon, blah, blah. That video is laughably stupid. They introduce the concept, then don’t take it far enough, then have a bunch of young people in bird outfits dancing (poorly, I might add) around. Considering her money, she should have gotten a much better artistic director.

  5. meme says:

wow. what a bad britney in her prime imitation. miley is beyond annoying.

  6. EMV says:

Like Joan Rivers said this morning on Fox….”Slut Sells”

  7. Risa says:

    @Wif & EMV-

You both said what I was thinking…..

  8. krissy_kitty says:

For her age, I’ll give her a pass. She is no longer 15, 16 trying too hard to be an “adult”.. It did remind me in every way of something Britney has done before…

  9. texasmom says:

Meh — I wouldn’t want my 17-year-old doing that, but I also don’t think that seeing this will harm my 7- and 9-year olds. People dancing over-dramatically in a birdcage. No biggie. (Brushing your teeth with Jack and the disco stick are a bigger problem — curse you, Lady Gaga!)

  10. Lady Nightshade says:

This video is hilarious! Sexy birds…. in a nest? And the part where all the ‘birds’ are gyrating in synchrony reminds me of Fraggle Rock

  11. GatsbyGal says:

Well it’s not art, that’s for sure. Nothing Miley does will ever be considered art.

  12. Harmony says:

“Funny story: As I was just playing this video, listening to the song as I wrote, my dog started crying. My dog has excellent taste in music.”

that is the most amazing truth ever lol

  13. Scarlet Vixen says:

It’s actually not as sexy as it pretends to be. Everyone, including Miley, are covered up. And they’re only dancing around, not groping or making out with each other. Would I want my 9-11yr old daughter (if I had one) to watch it and idolize it? Nah. But I guess I’ll play devil’s advocate and say it could be alot worse…?

  14. Harmony says:

good for her. shes not pretending anymore, thats for sure. And to me thats too sexualized for ANY teenager, but she has the right to express herself. I like miley and i hope she continues to do well.

But i have to say that quote about your dog crying during the song made my day, lol. Not the best song i’ve ever heard…

  15. Trillion says:

Terrible way to start my day. Searching for a palate cleanser now…

  16. serena says:

omg.. that’s fucking creepy and hilarious! What the hell with those wings? And..would someone just tell her to cut that mess of hair? please. xD I prefer her style more like country than this shit so money-like, and britney style.

  17. Obvious says:

it could definitely be worse. that being said, i saw it on E! last night and listened to it and it sounds almost identical to BritBrit songs from her heyday. Vocal tracks included. They must use the same synthesizer.

  18. Seri says:

@missfit —Same for me. doesn’t it make you feel old? 🙁 Ugh.

  19. Bee says:

@Lady Nightshade I loved Fraggle Rock! It was my favorite show as a kid.

  20. guesty says:

    awkward & annoying.

  21. asiont says:

this hen-thing is supposed to be sexy? I don’t think so

  22. AL says:

all I keep seeing is Adam Lambert’s hysterical cover art off his album when I look at the stills of her in the black bird/crow outfit.

  23. doublestandard says:

Flash forward seven years: her father is trying to get a conservatorship over her because she is such a drugged out mess. This sexed up video was no surprise. She’s following the path of Britney, Lindsay and other child stars. Sad thing is her dad worked in the industry. He knew what was going to happen and he pimped her out anyway.

  24. dre says:

Its fine, no big deal. People make more out of it than need be.
Im 50 years old and i dont have a problem with her.

  25. Gwen says:

I didn’t find it all that shocking… actually it was less offensive to me than that pole-dancing bit she did before. The song is ass though.

  26. Lori says:

she still has a baby face, which makes her actions appear even that more disturbing. i hate it.

  27. texasmom says:

Usually when my kids see her they comment on her bad posture — “where is her neck?”

  28. lucy2 says:

AKA, I thought the same thing!

While this in itself isn’t too terrible (though far from good) what is a bit worrisome is that she seems way too interested in pushing the limits and trying to get attention. I get trying to distance herself from her Disney years, but I could see her taking it too far.

  29. Obvious says:

@Lori, that’s it! I finally realized one of the things that has been bothering me the most about her (not her chipmunk cheeks and freaky teeth) it’s how young her face looks. while that’s great in hollywood cuz she can always play younger, when she tries to “sexualize” herself it comes across as majorly gross and offensive lol.

however in the interview she did with Ryan on E! she said most of her fans have grown with her and she is correct, my boss’s 6 year old worships her, so it’s a scary line she’s crossing.

  30. freckles says:

I didn’t think it was inappropriate OR art… I thought it was hilarious! How awkward and weird does she look in the beginning when she’s trying to act all sexy and crazy? Wtf?? The only part where she looks pretty and in my opinion really sexy is where she’s laying down in the forest. That part may be a little inappropriate, as I got the impression there was someone down below if you know what I’m sayin.. but her in the black costume? Totally laughable. She’s just not old enough to know how to be seductive. Look at the way she whips her huge head around in the first 20 seconds of the song… she’s gonna give herself whiplash.

Also, can we discuss the best/worst line ever:
“Every guy everywhere just gives me mad attention”
Doesn’t that just sound like something a 13 year old “mean girl” would say? It’s like, “I’m totes way cooler than you! Lolz!”

  31. voiceover says:

Dumb ass song. Ridiculous video. It’s not really offensive at all. Just stupid, imo. And yeah, I can understand why she doesn’t want to be viewed as a Disney Teen Princess (DTP! Ha!) throughout her life, but I’m sad to see her go in the direction of the other teen hollywood hot messes. It won’t end well. Am I the only one who thinks it would be awesome for one of these teenagers to stay grounded, stay normal and stay classy? Wouldn’t that be a great way to get the respect you’re looking for? That’s my only thing. It’s like they all think that negative attention is better than than normalcy.

  32. Jackie says:

She is such a joke. They are trying to make her sexy and edgy but she is NEITHER. She is so homely and untalented it is ridiculous. I have more sex appeal in my little toe than this creature. Even with all the flash and images, she still comes across as a wannabe. That’s because she is only 17 and she just doesn’t have any sex appeal! Why does TPTB insist on trying to make her appealing to the masses. She is only appealing to 7-8 year old children who have no taste in anything.

  33. Stephy2485 says:

Of course her image is “sexy-sexy” and she knows it–sex sells! I like Miley, I can’t help it. I end up liking her songs, and while I don’t doubt she’s been raised by VERY permissive lackadaisical parents I also think she isn’t crossing any lines at 17 that Ms. Spears and Ms. Aguliera were bolting across at 17. Britney was traipsing around in a Catholic School Girl’s uniform belting out songs about getting laid “one more time”.

Although the comparison to Britney is a bit far fetched. Miley is nowhere near exuding as much sex and appeal as Britney back in the day….Britney never depended on CGI for a cool video either….At least not until after the breakdown..

  34. Stephy2485 says:

And I agree with Gwen. The song IS ass

  35. Morgs says:

The header shot totally makes her look like Santa Angie Jo.

  36. jane says:

Another talentless hack from the Disney whore stable. They offered us the chance to have our kid audition for them & we told them no thanks. This also reminds of my main rant with H’wood which is the ridiculous nepotism. It is so hard for anyone without relatives to get a break in H’wood & is the main reason why they keep making the same crappy movies over & over and the quality keeps going downhill imo. My own teen, and my nieces and nephews can’t stand Miley, I’m pleased to say. Remember when she went on tour a couple of years ago and the tix were over a hundred bucks a pop? I can’t stand anything about her.

  37. Mairead says:

    Meh; Britney-lite.

There was a lot of debate of the “appropriateness” of GaGa lyrics for kids on some radio shows here some while ago (the disco stick in particular).

All I could think of, in my best Northern English accent – “Eh lass, it t’weren’t nothing like when I were a nipper. In MY day, we had proper sexualised Lolita in Annabella Lwin from “Bow Wow Wow” and seriously dodgy lyrics from Wham! in “Edge of Heaven” – you youngsters don’t know you’re born!!!
    😆

  38. Morgs says:

    Mairead

what exactly is a Geordie accent? I’m from California and read about this accent all the time. What exactly does it mean?

  39. ol cranky says:

yet another pretentious hack trying waaaaaaay too hard to appear sophisticated.

  40. Beth says:

I actually really like the song but the music sounds like a Britney single, If You Seek Amy.

  41. Mairead says:

The Geordie accent refers to people from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sunderland in the northeast of England (think Cheryl Cole). It’s quite different from the Yorkshire/Lancashire/Staffordshire style accent which is what is a typical “Northern” accent. (think Sean Bean)

Basically it’s the difference between Cheryl Cole’s accent and, say, the cast of Coronation Street, if you get to see BBC America.

These links are “classic” programmes with the relevant accents:
    First up, the Geordie accent:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSCfHz741dg

    And the Yorkshire accent: 😀

  42. Morgs says:

    Thanks Miss. Mairead!!

  43. Morgs says:

    PS…Sean Bean, yum.

  44. nelly says:

Both video and song are terrible annoying, like Cyrus. I think she should find another job

  45. luna says:

ugh. as much as i loved britney back in the day, i hate this generation of posers she’s inspired.

  46. Psyren says:

They look like the dancing chickens from that 80’s video “Right on Track” by the Breakfast Club. Only sluttier.

  47. marie says:

I’m not so shocked about the video, it could be worse..
But her voice dont fit whit that style… IMO

  48. Jillian says:

LOL, it’s exactly like “If you seek amy” only it sucks more.

I can’t believe her parents condone this. I’m a year older than her, I’m a performer, and I would never even think of doing or wearing even a third of the stuff she does. I can’t believe any parents allow their kids anywhere near her music.

  49. Aussie Mama says:

She’s doing what she was made to do in the first place, to corrupt the young, as young as possible, for evil disney.

  50. DrM says:

this totally reminds me of old Britney videos…its boring because its so familiar…

  51. ViktoryGin says:

    Just.Fucking.Boring.

I’m really tiring of the parade of pussy pastiche. Really. Everyone is coveting instant iconic relevance these days. They want to be polemical and original. They are neither. Put on a pair of pants and sit the fuck down.

@ Mairead …thanks for that. I’ve just recently been trying to sort out the Yorkshire accent.

  52. thebutlerdidit says:

It’s one part Cold Hearted Snake, the group dance thing especially, one part Britney’s Circus, and then the part where she’s wearing the corset is like the old skool Britney on the moon in red leather laying down during Oops, I Did It Again. Nothing truly new, but not as horrific as the new Christina or Lady Gaga’s new song Alajendro.

The minute I saw the cage, I knew w/o a doubt she’d swing on one of the “poles.”

  53. Amy says:

meh we’ve all seen this in music videos before. Christina went through this same period with her Dirrty video (which is way racier than Miley’s), Britney also broke free from her innocent image. It’s all about Miley trying to shed her Disney image. But honestly there are other ways to show that you are maturing than walking around awkwardly in ugly costumes. Not original at all Miley!

  54. Shawna says:

She’s just trying to get more Vanity Fair-era publicity. It’s just a deliberate attempt to get us talking.

And I’m sad I just gave in to it!

  55. I hate fat people says:

She is an ugly ugly person inside out.She can’t sing and dance.
She is lame with capital L.
Is this inappropriate or fancy art? Give me a f**king break! art? ha ha ha.
    Funny joke.
I really hope her stupid honky dad and stupid inbreed read this my comment.

  56. Ana says:

Well hopefully, she won’t be marketed toward the young tweens anymore.

But that’s probably too much to hope for.

What makes me sad is that she fills out her corset better than I could. 🙁
I need to start saving for a new pair of tatas.

  57. Belle Epoch says:

wow – I had to watch the video to see what all the fuss is about.

It’s really BAD! I think someone was going for a baby-bird-out-of-the-nest metaphor, but the baby bird looks like a dominatrix, and Miley appears to have been sexually active for quite awhile now.

Miley seems to think she is 10 years older than she really is. Actually she’s just a rude and crude girl.

P.S. The wings are not “cool” – they are laugh-out-loud funny!

  58. Kelsey McMinn says:

I didn’t think it was bad at all, so what, Miley Cyrus is 17 years old and almost 18, she can do whatever she wants. I loved the video, and I love her, + the wings, I thought that was awesome. Why does everyone have to judge who she is, life if hers do don’t judge it or control it. Love u Miley Cyrus and loved ur video, can not be better!!! 🙂 =D <3 And christina’s video was not that bad, I love her songs too. Everybody needs to stop talking shit bout miley and all the other stars they hate because all you ppl r gonna do is piss ppl and everybody of. SO guess what Suck a guys dick bacause nobody is going to sitting there and belieave ur sassy talks!!!!! Oh I almost for got Britney Spears is all better then all of u ppl that talk bout her and try to even cuse bout her so bitches go to hell and don’t even go there!!! 🙂

  59. original kate says:

that video is fawking hilarious! but “kids in the hall” did it better with the chicken lady.

  60. Erin says:

Trying too hard. Record-company-contrived. Boring and predictable….any more adjectives? Oh yes, hideous. Also, this has been done before. Too many times. Plus, the music is just as fake as her. She cannot sing worth crap live.

  61. For Sooth? says:

Welcome to the world of porn, baby girl. Stocker maniacs have just been given a HUGE gift.

Miley, You Are And Your Parents Are Idiots Beyond Compare. Sure, sure, boosting your demographic a la Britney and Christina will widen your sales, but you don’t realize that you have been the butt of many yokel jokes, now you will be the actual butt for men worldwide.

Congrats kid, you’re in the big time now, I see platinum waiting for you, but it’s a platinum coated pole and not a cd. Sometimes those poles get nicked from all the porn starlets before you that scratched them with their stiletto heels and fake nails. Be careful, your ride may be bumpy.

  62. Concerned says:

In my honest opinion I believe that when Miley Started out she was the cute little Tennessee girl who appeared on Disney Channel and just so happened to become the biggest icon to little girls everywhere. I understand that she is growing up and wants to show that through her music but should she have started out on Disney Channel I’m not so sure. I personally have two little sisters who live at home who are/were Miley and Hannah fans, they’ve got it all: shirts, blankets, cds, posters etc. you name it they have it.

The older of my younger sisters birthday is this month and is turning 11, she asked me if I would get her the new “Can’t Be Tamed” Miley cd. I said we’ll see and went to Wal*Mart to see what she was talking about. As soon as I saw it I about fell over. Is this the kind of icon the younger generation should look up to? Next year is she going to ask me for a stripper pole because that’s what Miley is doing this time next year? She’s constantly walking around singing:
“For those who don’t know me, I can get a bit crazy
Have to get my way, 24 hours a day
    ‘Cause I’m hot like that
Every guy everywhere just gives me mad attention
Like I’m under inspection, I always get the 10s
    ‘Cause I’m built like that”

Is this what 11 year olds should be singing probably not. I understand that every teen goes through the transition from teen to adult. Look at Brittney Spears, and Lindsey Lohan, both teens who transitioned but didn’t do it exactly how us normal people do it. I don’t agree with the image that Miley is trying to pull off here but I suppose its really not my choice.

  63. Hostgator says:

lol, I LOVE Miley Cyrus! She’s the Best!!
