John Rich says Chely Wright misunderstood when he asked her if she was gay

45th Annual Academy Of Country Music Awards - Arrivals
Your first response when reading this title might be “who are these people?” so I’ll recap. Chely Wright is a country singer with a few minor country hits. She had a number one country single in 1999 called “Single White Female,” and another hit with 1997’s “Shut Up and Drive” (not related to the Rihanna song) but if you’re not a country fan, or even if you are, you might not have heard of her. Wright just came out of the closet as the first country singer to openly admit they’re gay.

When I heard that Wright was announcing her orientation I assumed “well, she’s doing it for publicity after a stalled career.” That seems to be supported by the fact that she has a new album and memoir out. However, I saw Wright on The Today show yesterday (you can watch the video here) and she seemed both earnest and genuinely torn about coming out. She said that she’s Christian and a conservative and that she’s struggled with self acceptance of her orientation since she was a little girl. Wright wants people to know that it’s not incompatible to be gay and conservative and that no one needs to go what she went through. She almost committed suicide before she realized that she deserved to live an authentic life.

While explaining how she tried to keep her homosexuality a secret, Wright said that she encountered open resistance from people in her industry. She told a story about a guy named John Rich, from the country band “Big and Rich,” asking her if she was gay and telling her that it homosexuality was “sick,” “deviant,” and “unacceptable to country fans.” This encounter with Rich was a real turning point for Wright in that it was the first time she lied about her orientation, and it forced her to face the prejudices in her industry.

The news that Wright is recounting this incident has of course gotten back to John Rich, and he denies that it all went down that way. According to Rich’s account, he was just checking to see if a beautiful female country singer was available.

Country star JOHN RICH has fired back at quotes attributed to him in gay singer CHELY WRIGHT’snew memoirs, insisting she has misquoted him – and taken one remark he made 10 years ago way too far.

The Big & Rich star is upset Wright never spoke to him before going public with her book, Like Me, in which she states an offhand comment he made about her sexuality prompted a meltdown.

Talking about her new book on U.S. TV show Access Hollywood, Wright recalled the hurtful comments Rich, who has remained a close friend of hers, made a decade ago.

She said, “He said, ‘You’re not gay are you?!’ I said, ‘No, John, I’m not.’ He said, ‘Good, thank God.’ And that began a spiral for me. I had a meltdown shortly after that.”

But Rich insists Wright took his comments too far, and he’s appalled she has slammed him in her new tome.

He states, “I would never pass judgment on any friend of mine. I feel awful that, at this time in Chely’s life, my decade-old comment was taken the wrong way.

“I was clumsily trying to express my relief that even a country boy like me had a one-in-a-million chance of having a beer with a woman as talented and attractive as Chely. For years after that conversation, Chely invited me to perform at charity events. In all that time, I wish she would have said something directly to me before the book’s publicity tour, especially since some of the comments attributed to me in the book are not mine.”

But Rich has chosen to take the high road on the literary spat, insisting he’s happy for Wright and “I only wish her the best in her personal and professional life.”

[From Contact Music]

I don’t know much about this guy, but I like the way he handled that. He was defensive without getting upset about it. He’s saying that he had no idea Wright took his comments that way, that he didn’t exactly say that, and that he knew her for years and she never told him the effect that had on her. That’s fair enough, although he could have apologized for whatever way she took his comment, unintentional or not. Also, if he told her being gay is “sick,” “deviant” and “unacceptable” then he needs to clarify that he doesn’t hold those beliefs. (It’s possible that Rich doesn’t yet know that she said that about him on The Today show, though.)

I looked up Rich on Wikipedia, hoping that he was married when he confronted Wright and claims that he just wanted to date her. He wasn’t, but I learned that he campaigned for McCain in 2008 and even recorded a song for him. (Unlike the many other artists who said McCain used their music without permission.) That doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that he probably holds conservative positions on issues. I’ve often wished the guy who won that election would advocate to give overdue basic rights to gay and lesbian couples. It’s unacceptable that another generation will grow up and face the same ignorance and prejudice that drove Wright to consider suicide.

He doth protest too much-probably gay or bi himself.

  2. sasha says:

“Wright just came out of the closet as the first country singer to openly admit they’re gay. ”

    Uh, kd lang?

  3. mags says:

he’s not really denying the homophobic comments…so i don’t know. but i think it goes to show that you should watch what you say. you never know how the comments you make can really hurt someone

  4. Hautie says:

John Rich has put his foot in his big mouth more than once. He is a staunch Republican and a son of a Baptist Pastor.

So I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. He might had said it 10 years ago, but may have become less big mouthy about it now. Since she outed him.

  5. Jane Q. Doe says:

I can how the same conversation could be taken totally different ways by both of them. (That’s just based on the book quote, as it doesn’t appear he’s responded to what she said on “Today”)

And was K.D. Lang always out, or was there a ‘coming out’ kind of thing where she announced it? I can’t recall anything like that, but she was before my time.

  6. amy says:

yes, kd lang was first. but the general consensus seems to be that the country music world never fully accepted her androgynous vibe and she didn’t come out until after moving away from the country genre and her time in nashville to a more contemporary pop style. (Jane: KD came out on the cover of the advocate in 1992)

plus, you know, i figure since she’s a canadian gal (like me), she probably wouldn’t have had the same effect as chely wright who’s a southern girl.

as a queer woman myself, i can’t quite put into words how hopeful the coming out of chely and christian music singer jennifer knapp have made me. as much as i’m disappointed the big reveal wasn’t an A list celeb, i think in the end this will be much more important.

  7. lucy2 says:

So did he say “Good thank God” or did he say “Good, being gay is sick and deviant?” Because she seems to be claiming 2 different things, or I’m reading it wrong. Neither are good comments, but with the first I could almost maybe buy his explanation that he was interested in her, but with the 2nd, there’s no question what he meant.
Either way, I imagine it was very difficult for her for a long time, having to hide, and being around people who think that way. I imagine it took a lot of courage for her to come out as she did, and hopefully she now feels some relief and can openly be herself.

  8. Angel says:

This isn’t the first time JR has done this, when he was supporting Fred Thompson he pulled a “Rick Sanctorum” by comparing homosexuality to incest. He can call it whatever he wants, but your telling me this guy has never watched girl on girl porn or had 3 somes? BullSh*t!!! He’s a jerk, and everyone knows it. ITs so sad that this kind of narrowmindedness almost cost her her life. Such a Shame!! His life revolves around debauchery and perversion oh but homosexuality is a no-no

  9. Cletus says:

Well, Holy shit- a dude putting his foot in his mouth when talking to a pretty woman? STOP THE PRESSES! I’ve never heard of such a thing!

Unless he DID say all that stuff about being a deviant. In that case, that’s just a dick move. But hell, he’s a country singer. Last I checked the Redneck population wasn’t real big into acceptance. And I can say that because I’m from and still live in the Redneck Rivera. So I know.

  10. terry says:

She is a very pretty woman…hope she finds a partner who truly deserves her.

  11. NayNay says:

He is not stating that he didn’t make a homophobic comment. All he says is that he is upset that she took the comment the wrong way. If he was interested in dating her, then the correct question would have been “Are you dating anyone”. Not ‘you’re not gay are you?’ Shame on you John Rich. I used to like him, now, not so much.

  12. flutters says:

John Rich has a history of bigoted comments.

He got himself into trouble and backpedaled when he compared gay marriage to incest. Here’s an article about it:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/howie-klein/an-endorsement-out-of-nas_b_70119.html

“”I think if you legalize that, you’ve got to legalize some other things that are pretty unsavory. You can call me a radical, but how can you tell an aunt that she can’t marry her nephew if they are really in love and sharing the bills? How can you tell them they can’t get married, but something else that’s unnatural can happen?””

When he apologized he still claimed to be against intolerance and bigotry.

I’d say this is a pattern with John Rich. Let the prejudice come through and then apologize like it doesn’t exist. I for one am not fooled.

  13. Jane Q. Doe says:

Amy – thanks for the info on KD Lang, and I hadn’t heard about Jennifer Knapp coming out either. Followed a link to an interview in Christianity Today, which was really interesting.

  14. CandyKay says:

When it appeared that the celebrity coming out was Chely Wright, there was a lot of “Who’s she?” and “It’s just for publicity” commentary.

But her being openly gay – and conservative – offers a path to a lot of other young gays and lesbians with conservative beliefs.

Hopefully knowing there’s someone like Chely Wright – a beautiful, successful, talented lesbian – will help some of those kids understand that there’s a way forward in life.

Maybe even prevent some potential suicides.

I think she’s doing a great service – whether it has publicity value to her or not.

  15. CandyKay says:

Incidentally, I agree with you about Barack Obama needing to get his act together on gay and lesbian rights – particularly the military’s ridiculous “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

I’m rather conservative myself, and I think it is unacceptable and unAmerican that people can’t serve their country because of their sexual orientation.

Isreal has gays in the military – why can’t the USA?

  16. kai says:

    CandyKay-

Um, gays and lesbians CAN serve their country, they just cannot go around proclaiming their sexuality to the world. Everyone in the military knows who the gays are, they gays know they know, so why the need to “come out” in an environment where it is not even an issue? I mean, you’re fighting terrorists and sh*t, can’t you hold off on the pride parade til you get home? Seriously? Do you need to be a special little snowflake THAT badly? No offense to them and all but seriously, who really gives a crap what you choose to f*ck as long as it’s over 18 and able to consent? Why do gay people feel the need to showcase their sexuality? Perhaps THAT is the problem the “homophobes” have, they just want you to STFU about what you do with your genitals. I know I couldn’t care less, and I certainly wouldn’t judge anyone by their sexuality but if all you do is yammer on and on about how being gay is this or that, then you’re boring and need to shut up. Seriously. I guess this makes me a homophobe, right? LOL.

    flutters-

Actually, he is right. There have already been pushes by the sick f*cks into bestiality to “mainstream” it, and they give all the credit to “coming out” with their sexuality to the gay movement. You will shortly see it with pedophilia and incest as well, I have no doubt. OBVIOUSLY gays are not sick or deviant like those people (remember what I said about consent? As long as you can consent and are 18+ then fine, but children and animals cannot consent), but they are emboldening these sickos and making them think that they deserve “tolerance and acceptance” too. This is not the fault of the gays in any way but I do see where Rich is going with that, and since it is happening right now, I don’t think I’d call him a homophobe when he’s just stating facts.

  17. oh hey says:

I was wondering when the “backpedal” article would come out.

@flutter, I can’t help but think that he left himself WIDE OPEN for redneck jokes with that statement.

  18. Emily says:

@kai,I don’t know about a pride parade, but I should think that anynoe has the right to talk about their persoal life with their work mates, without fear of losing their job.

  19. Morning Glory says:

I think we owe it to John Rich to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. I’ve been asked that by guys at bars and they aren’t being mean about it, the just want to see if they have a shot. Its usually followed by things like ‘do you have a boyfriend/ husband?’.I think it was pretty harmless on his part. He couldn’t have know how it affected her.

@Cletus: not all rednecks are like him. Redneck=/= bigot. And there are many, many bigots that are not rednecks.

@Emily: they don’t lose their jobs. They do talk about it to their friends. They are open about it. I say this from experience with lots of military personnel.

  20. L says:

He sounds really nice. She sounds really twisted and like a self involved headcase.

I could not agree more about wishing that the outcome of the last presidential election meant that we would see equal rights for gay and lesbian couples, and yes it is unaccaptable for another generation to grow up to face such ignorance and predudice — well said. At the VERY LEAST I wish President Obama would follow through with his promise to repeal don’t ask don’t tell. This policy would not be accepted in any other occupation, but it is ok in the military, where people put their lives on the line for us every day? It is disgusting.

  21. lucy2 says:

The problem with don’t ask, don’t tell is not that people want to run around yelling gay pride, but that they don’t want to be fired from their job if it is found out that they are gay, even if they’ve never said a word about their private life in the workplace. That’s my understanding of it, anyway.

  22. Morning Glory says:

They are not fired from the military for being gay. Period. That is not what DA/DT does. Everyone around probably knows they are gay most of the time. Don’t presume, go ask military people about it. The military has bigger problems than if private X is gay or straight. Trust me.

  23. Macheath says:

Can you really be both conservative and gay? I genuinely want to know because perhaps I’m misunderstanding her definition of conservative. Assuming she is a conservative in the same variety as say Palin and the Republicans, doesn’t that mean she would be against things like abortion? Surely by coming out, she wants acceptance of her orientation and rightly so but if she was anti-abortion, isn’t she being hypocritical? I’m not saying she is, I’m just throwing this out as an example. Does anybody know what her actual conservative views are?

  24. L says:

Well then Kai, why don’t you advocate that they change the don’t ask don’t tell poilicy to include ALL sexual orientations? That way members of the military won’t know that straight people are straight or that gay people are gay? And then they don’t assume everyone is straight, and also everyone is equally at risk of being discharged if anyone learns of there sexual preferences. Why shouldn’t everyone have to be guarded about their personal life then??

Personally, I do not think any such policy should exist. The members of our military should be free to express who they are without fear of consequence.

NayNay you make a great point — asking, “you’re not gay are you?” is not an appropriate way for the guy to express his interest in dating her. That point and the points that other posters have made about this guy John Rich make me think he is not such a nice guy after all. But I still think she is weird to feign friendship with him all these years and then turn around and bring all this up in her book, rather then getting together with him to talk about it first at least.

  25. Morning Glory says:

Macheath: That’s possible. You seem to have a really narrow definition of conservative. She could be a social liberal, and a political conservative, or any combination of views. The terms ‘conservative’ and ‘liberal’ have pretty set political definitions in our society, but that’s not what they mean. They are just generalizations about a persons views, that didn’t necessarily say everything about their views on every issue.

And yes, you can be conservative and gay, you can be conservative and be pro-gay. You can be liberal and anti-abortion. Politics and the issues involved are way waaay more complicated then just being straight-line ‘liberal’ or ‘conservative’. The words themselves shouldn’t have such definite meanings. I personally don’t use either word because I don’t want to be categorized like that, I just say ‘depends on the issue’.

@L: have you read any of what I said? PEOPLE ALREADY KNOW THEY ARE GAY. No one is guarded about what they are. NO ONE IS DISCHARGED FOR BEING GAY. NO ONE. If they were, they could sue over it, and they would most likely win.

  26. L says:

Macheath, I am pro-life and I support gay rights. I am not hypocritical. My views on each are unrelated. I also do not support the death penalty. Sometimes you can’t just pigeohole people neatly into a category because of their beliefs or who they are. I consider myself more conservative than not, however I feel very passionately about some of my more liberal points of view. Being pro-life and supporting gay rights have nothing to do with one another.

  27. L says:

Morning Glory, chill out. You have no way of knowing that no one is guarded about who they are. If for no other reason the policy should be repealed just becasue of what it stands for, even if it is not acted upon.

  28. dizzybenny says:

”Chely invited me to perform at charity events. In all that time, I wish she would have said something directly to me…”
Now would you invite someone you dont like and makes you uncomfortable,to perform with you at events?
that’s the line that jumped me while reading this.he might have said bad things before and since, like others have posted, but in this instenced…?
But like i said yesterday,a good way to sell books is to look like you’ve been a victim and she’s doing that very well!

  29. gee says:

    Macheath:

PLEASE do not equate all Republicans with Sarah Palin! She is a nobody Republican that the media loves because she is a nut. She is not what the party is about. Conservative values include smaller government, emphasis on defense and foreign affairs. It isn’t only social issues. I am a conservative and I believe the government has no right to say whether or not a gay person can or cannot marry. It’s in no way the right of the United States to butt in on intimate relationships.

And what does Lesbianism have to do with abortion? The two subjects are unrelated. And while reproductive rights may be a political issue, bring pro-life or pro-choice is not confined to a party. It is a debate on whether or not you believe that life begins at conception, and that is not always defined by Democrat or Republican doctrine. Plus, the girl is human, she doesn’t need to jump on a band wagon and believe everything a party or organization tells her to. She can be a lesbian and still value some (or most) conservative ideals.

  30. Jason says:

Morning Glory: Are you SERIOUS?! Gays are NOT being kicked out of the military for being gay?! Wow… you need to do some research because that DOES happen a LOT more often then people think. I can think of at least 4 people I know (and have met from different groups and events) who HAVE been given dishonorable discharges because of their sexuality and being “caught.”

Oh and FYI….FACT….Persecutions and harassment of suspected gay and bisexual servicemen and women continue despite the “Dont Ask Dont Tell” policy that was enacted in 1993, and more than 13,000 troops have been discharged for being gay.

Kai: Gays who serve in the military don’t go around flaunting their sexuality or anything like that. It’s not like they’re running around the training camp with a rainbow flag…. They are there for one thing and one thing only… to serve their country. But WHY should they have to hide their sexuality? WHY is it fair that a straight person in the military can talk about their loved one/wife/husband/partner or friends, but a gay person can’t without being punished?? WHY should a gay person not be able to put up a picture of their loved one/wife/husband/partner or friends on their locker and a straight person can? The fear of being outed and ridiculed by their “peers” and given a dishonorable discharge is horrible and it’s something you can’t even BEGIN to comprehend.

The reason WHY a lot of us speak up so much about it is because we want EQUAL RIGHTS…. PERIOD. We should be able to enjoy the same things in life that straight people do and have the SAME rights when it comes to laws and everything else. Maybe if we DID have the SAME rights, we wouldn’t make such a “fuss” about certain things.

How would YOU feel if you couldn’t walk down he street holding your partners hand or being able to share a quick little romantic kiss in public? How would YOU feel if you were denied the right to marry your loved one? How would YOU feel when beaten up within an inch of your life JUST for your sexuality?

And NO, I wouldn’t say that you are a homophobe… just mis-guided and not informed enough.

    ANYWAYS…

Big & Rich are VERY much against gays and lesbians. It’s pretty much know in the whole music/country music industry that they are like that. They BOTH have made very horrible anti-gay comments in the past MANY times. I for one will NEVER support them.

  31. Cinderella says:

Funny, I always thought the name Big and Rich was a fabulously gay one.

  32. Macheath says:

    @Morning Glory, L and Gee.
    Thanks for your responses =)
For the record, I don’t have a narrow definition of conservative; I’m going by what the society I grew up in views as conservative and the impression we had of American conservatism. Does not necessarily mean I ascribe to them. I agree, Palin is not representative of all Republicans, that was poor wording on my part.
Lesbianism and pro-life issues may be unrelated as individual subjects, but I just used that example in relation to Ms Wright calling herself a Christian conservative. Obviously, I don’t know her stance which was why I asked if anybody did know. I wasn’t being hostile, I just wanted to know what you guys thought on the issue.
Anyway, thanks for all your responses =)

  33. Emily says:

Jason, ITA on everything you just said.

  34. ade says:

Totally lost respect for her, “coming out” so that she can sell a book and her album. I hate when celebrity’s “come out”, making a huge announcement, like they are “special” and so “brave”, and the media props them up as victims. There are hundreds of men and women who “come out” every day and receive no accolades, probably face intense discrimination from family and friends, and loose a lot more than Chely Wright will…yet they do it anyway. Those are the really brave souls. It seems like “gay” is the new way for an entertainer to become relevant again. Enjoy your 15 minutes Chely.

  35. Obvious says:

you can be discharged from the military for being openly gay. some commanders and such choose to overlook it, but some don’t. my brother’s best friend in the military was gay, and when it was found out he was discharged. he couldn’t do anything about it. and they are doing studies about repealing the DA/DT policy. it’s about 50/50 for vs against at the moment.

that being said, i’ve never like big & rich. and i’ve always adored Chely. I say congrats to her for doing it, and while she isn’t a mainstream star she’s pretty high up there in the country royalty. and she is he first major star in the genre. i didn’t even know kd lang did country, i’ve been listening to it my entire life (then again i’m only in my early 20s).

and cletus, your comment was high offensive. you have just labeled country fans with rednecks-which could be offensive and to top it off you said we were all bigots and close minded. i would say you are the close minded bigots for daring to group such a large group as such. a few bad apples does not mean we all are.

  36. xxodettexx says:

    everything jason says…

  37. thebutlerdidit says:

Not that I deeply care one way or another, I’m pretty Libertarian politically, but one of Palin’s best friends is gay, and she fully supports her. Not sure where ppl get the “hates gay” thing. And there are many political ideologies ppl can fall under-Socially Conservative/Liberal/Libertarian, Fiscally Conservative/Liberal/Libertarian. Kinda mix and match.

  38. Jason says:

thebutlerdidit: FYI… Palin does NOT support gay marriage OR equal rights for gays.

She supported the 1998 constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

She stated ON record that “I believe that honoring the family structure is important,” and that, “I don’t know if people choose to be gay.”

So…. remind me HOW exactly this is “supporting her gay best friend?”

    LoL

  39. javagirl1 says:

Loved the last 2 sentences you wrote in this article CB…my sentiments exactly.

  40. badrockandroll says:

I am a socially liberal but politically conservative huge fan of country music. Not a huge fan of Chely Wrights’ music, but now a huge fan of her courage within an industry that is marred by both misogyny and homophobia. I think it’s a bit short-sighted to dismiss her actions as self-promotion: if she didn’t have a book and a CD she wouldn’t be on anyone’s radar.

Rich, on the other hand, is an opportunistic do*che. His ex-partner (“Big”)is an esoteric lovable hippy; they likely don’t work together anymore because of Rich’s overwhelming ego. I have lost track of the number of charges he has/is facing because his evil temper and ego is made even worse by alcohol. He cannot tell the truth. There is no way his version is accurate.

  41. badrockandroll says:

oops – and I forgot to say that I am straight, and like many other straight women, would NEVER date John Rich.

  42. Jocelina says:

@kai I think you should grab a dictionary and look up the word “flaunt” and then tell the class how a gay or lesbian soldier wanting to be able to refer to his or her partner by the correct name and gender is “flaunting.”

@Morning Glory – Really? No one EVER EVER GETS DISCHARGED? How about Daniel Choi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Choi)? Or Victor Fehrenbach (http://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2009/05/airforce_fehrenbach_052009w/)?

  43. GatsbyGal says:

For those wondering how you can be conservative and still be pro gay rights – I think you’re confusing “conservative” with “religious right.”

My dad is VERY much a conservative because he’s pro firearms, pro small government, and probably lots of other reasons to do with money stuff that I don’t really understand. But he’s an athiest and is pretty open minded about most social stuff, so he’s pro choice and also pro gay rights.

  44. Tia says:

unfortunatley lets face it, country fans are perceived to be uneducated rednecks with 2 teeth in their mouth, poor grammar and shop at walmart and live in trailers. They already feel inferior to others so they like to dislike groups of people in a pathetic attempt to make themselves feel better.
I’ve often wished the guy who won that election would advocate to give overdue basic rights to gay and lesbian couples. It’s unacceptable that another generation will grow up and face the same ignorance and prejudice that drove Wright to consider suicide.
