Miley Cyrus on her racy new video: my mom was there, dad was “so proud”

There was some minor controversy last week over the sexy new video for Miley Cyrus’ latest single, “Can’t Be Tamed.” It featured Miley as some kind of bird in a cage dancing around in a corset with trailing feathers and strappy boots. It was too sexualized for a 17 year-old, but it looked more like something a high school student would put on Facebook if they had a video camera and costume budget. I see how this is over the top and too much, and I also see a teenage girl just trying too hard to look sexy, which is nothing new. It’s kind of painful to watch, and someone should have stepped in and told Miley that this didn’t work for Britney and it wouldn’t work for her. She needs some guidance, but according to Miley she was given free reign to “be herself,” and her mom was right there with her on set. Her dad saw the video and gave his approval too. I guess when your daughter is bringing in millions a month you want to make her happy, not that Tish and Billy Ray would ever think it’s inappropriate for their daughters to express themselves by gyrating around in tiny outfits.

Miley recently announced plans to take a break from music and focus on her acting career, but she isn’t planning to abandon it altogether. “I think [my fans have] a lot to look forward to in music as well,” she teased.

For right now, Miley fans can enjoy her spicy new song and video, which she says got full approval from her parents.

“My mom was on set,” she said of the edgy video. “And my dad loves it, because I think my dad was thinking I was a little crazy as I was writing it. When you see it, they were so proud of the treatment I came up with.”

Plus, she thinks the video is pretty spot-on to who she is as a person. “I think it definitely shows a change of what people remember me as, but it’s not trying to not be me,” Cyrus said. “I didn’t want to be just a character. I wanted to be myself and just in a bird-like form in the way I dressed.”

[From MTV]

So in the video Miley is “not trying to not be me.” She’s just trying to figure out who that is, and it’s really uncomfortable to watch. Remember how much of a controversy those backless Vanity Fair photos of Miley Cyrus draped in a sheet were two years ago when she was just 15? It came out that photographer Annie Liebovitz convinced Miley to put on the sheet and take the arguably provocative photos after her parents left. Fast forward to 2010 and it’s Miley who is convincing her parents and handlers to let her give us her version of “sexy.” Just like Annie Liebovitz, someone should have told Miley “no.”

this video is basically a broke ass version of every concept from the “i’m a slave 4 u” video with feathers added.

  2. Michelle says:

    lol, my thoughts exactly, ien.

  3. Dusky says:

…That’s about the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. I was giggling the whole way through. XDD ‘Can’t be tamed’ my butt. Girl IS tamed. She’s not ‘edgy’ or ‘wild’. She’s just… skanky, basically. Though if I had her body, I’d probably be skanky too. XD

I’m just sick of her trying to act like she’s totally different and unique… girl, you’re about the same as any other teenager plucked off the street. Sorry.

This video is ficking hilarious though. XDDD Does anybody else think it sounds kind of like Brit-brit’s “If You Seek Amy”?

  4. Lin95 says:

Can’t blame her for wanting to be like Brit-Brit…..Can’t wait for her to shave her head and rock the pink wig

  5. girl says:

Wow. I only made it about 1 minute in. Extreme second-hand embarassment going on here. Even not taking into account her age and that for many people she is still Hanna Montana, namely tweens, that was terrible.

  6. Jeri says:

Miley and her folks seem to want to be sure we realize they are all tasteless uneducated hillbillies and that is why they think everything she does is good taste.

  7. kim says:

i can’t stand that kid, but her video wasn’t racey at all. She looked fine.

They want people to think it’s racy for further publicity. Sorry it’s not a whore fest video, and it isn’t controversal.

I’m just glad video art is back!!

  8. Jover says:

Silly silly and awful. She is so painfully untalented its gone beyond parody to self-delusion. As someone previously posted, she is essentially the cash cow for her family. THe laughable thing is a read somewhere that her record label, Hollywood Records, is actually owned by DISNEY. Correct me if I’m wrong on this posters. Again we have the disconnect between a media bozo being pushed down our throats and her actual popularity. How did her recent movie do; she hasn’t even mentioned that lately – anyone know the real figures. Also, have you noticed her images are much less visible in Wal-Marts these last few months – I’m guessing her affliation with Max Azria hasn’t turned out so well. But her family will always come up with more ventures to prostitute her on.

  9. belynda says:

Teen girls will do what they want to get attention. The disturbing part is not what miley is doing to herself, but her influence on very young girls. The only girls I know that are paying attention to her are under 8 years old. Granted i do not know a lot of young girls, but the sexual and submissive images are not healthy for very young girls. I understand the argument violent vs sexual images but a lot of girls are growing up without strong and healthy male role models and the constant reinforcing of sex for attention will hurt little girls. I am old enough to have seen the damage that is done by the early sexulizing of children.

  10. KateR says:

I actually like the video, especially those large black wings. However, the song sounds Adam Lambertish, no?

  11. Elizabeth says:

    “dad was so proud”

    eeeewwwwww, groooooooooossssss!!!!!

  12. Iris says:

I personally think she should have been a caged chipmunk, not a caged bird.

She has a good body, but her baby face just does not suit “sexy” at all. And what’s with all the awkward faces she makes at the camera?

  13. MaiGirl says:

As soon as she became famous as a “tween” star, I was waiting for something like this to happen. I’m old enough to remember with Tiffany and Debbie Gibson sexed it up to be seen as more “adult”. I can totally understand how frustrating it must be to freeze in people’s minds as a child or young teen, but it is just unseemly when they pull the “sexy” card again and again with rapidly diminishing returns. Miley is doing this because she is really not that attractive (her mouth just bothers me for some reason. There’s something unattractively toothy and pouty about it) or talented. I do wonder how the parents of her legion of little girl fans feel about this, and how they will react now that Hannah Montana is kinda slutty.

  14. TK says:

The video seems fine to me, just a pop video. The song was boring though.

  15. Whiskey says:

I’m sure there are plenty of 45 year old felon pervs that will eat this up.

  16. Tia C says:

I’m sure he WAS proud! Proud of his little trash-tastic trailer park teen idol! LOL.

  17. Constance says:

These people are the truest form of Family Spears DownHome Management. Work the conservative good girl image, rock the Christian girl gone wild look, let the Barely Legal stage act bring in the cash, and then retire on decades of tabloid mess as one or more family members go to outrageous lengths to get attention for a dwindling amount of change.

  18. QB says:

Kids grow up and Miley Cyrus target market have out grown her , the new kids watch the other teens show.

Now she is trying to transition but she is doing it horribly.

  19. Alexa says:

Out of so many of the Disney prostiTOTS – Miley and Raven are the two females that do NOT bother me. You should see some of the other ones: 14 going on 40, and acting like they’re on their 2nd or 3rd marriage. Have you ever noticed that?! The Disney kid stars seem SO MATURE and WORLDLY when they’re interviewed. What?!@

  20. original kate says:

i love that video – it makes me laugh my ass off every time i see it.

  21. Bee says:

What parents wouldn’t be proud of seeing their daughter flop around in a bird costume while air humping random dancers? Now that’s a Kodak moment!

  22. danielle says:

Uh- actually pulling a Brittney could be extremely lucrative – you just need to avoid the going insane part. :^(

  23. kristen says:

    YOU ARE A CHILD!

  24. Bee says:

@Iris LOL! It’s like she has a mouth full of acorns.

  25. nena says:

Sorry, but it’s sound like Britney!

  26. jzhz says:

If this is sexy, sexy sure has gotten boring.

  27. Jessipalooza says:

    It’s an underaged feather orgy.

  28. JuiceinLA says:

I despair. When will this society tire of allowing these parents to turn their children into drug addled whores? Wasn’t Britney and Lindsay enough already? Isn’t this shixxa stale yet?

  29. aury says:

didn’t britney pose the same way in one of her album covers? i can’t stand either one of them. & when i have kids, i’m gonna make sure they never listen to this kind of tired old crap.

  30. Scout says:

I am sure this appeals to someone – much, much, much younger….but to me, it is so ordinary, so forced, so weird – and, actually, rather dull for all the strutting and feather swooping! I will check with some 10 year olds I know and see if they like it…if so, nuff said!

  31. Crash2GO2 says:

    @Constance: Beautifully said!

I just watched the first minute or so – dear God. I’m torn between laughing and crying. It was that bad and that painful.

  32. Missfit says:

Well I like the fact that Cindy Crawford doesn’t let her daughter watch Miley (I read somewhere). When kids are tiny, they don’t understand what’s going on on the telly, they just know to dance to the music, but as they get older, they get smarter. If kids wants to mock what Scooby Doo does or what not, I can imagine a celebrity. So us as parents either don’t let them watch it at all, or we have to explain it’s fake incase they watch something. Regardless if it’s skanky crap like this or Spiderman jumping off a building and they want to jump off stuff and get hurt. We have to be monitoring them 24/7. All we can do is the best we can, there’s no perfect parent. I’ll admit, I watched Madonna as a kid and I loved dancing to her music and I turned out pretty normal, some people are just different on how they turn out, and how things affect their lives. Then again, Madonna was old enough to be slutty, now in days, the younger the sluttier. When I was in school I was into Gwen Stefani, Spice Girls and The Cardigans, stuff like that, they weren’t so bad. Atleast Debbie Gibson and Tiffany got slutty later, in their early 20s or after, they were decent as teens.

  33. doublestandard says:

    Totally agree with you, cb!

  34. J.D says:

What do you mean by “didn’t work for Britney”? Of course it worked for Brit. Brit’s laughing all the way to the bank from it.

Also, why do people find this inappropriate for a 17 year old? I could understand the reactions if Miley were 13 or so, but she is almost 18, and therefore old enough to make her own decisions.

  35. gongbemzzzz says:

I CANT STAND HER FACE, this girl is soooo effing ugly!!! people need to stop making a big deal out of her… she’s just a lilo wannabe, trying hard to be sexy.. ATLEAST BRITNEY AND LOHAN ARE PRETTY!

  36. illa says:

Between Britney, Christina and Rhianna, what else is there to say ? They rocked all the bad/good/sexy/crazy/controversial images.
Nothing remotely original with this girl, unless she is sticking to her Hanna character, that I still do not get.

  37. thebutlerdidit says:

This is shocking? Sorry, I have a 19 and 21 yr old. I know how they dress, how they dance, etc. School dances have more sex in them. I see hundreds of teens dressed in shorty shorts and tiny halters shaking their butts way younger than the soon-to-be 18 yr old Cyrus. Hate the song/video, but controversial, it isnt. Besides, it’s definately more Broadway cats/Paula Abdul’s Cold Hearted Snake than Brit-Brit.

  38. kili says:

yeah the butler did it but unfortunatly Miley’s fan’s are not 19 and 21 yr olds, they are 7-15 yr old girls.

  39. XYZ says:

Im sorry to repeat but this is the truth: the Cyruses are pimping their kids, especially their daughters. Everything about them is sick.

  40. WTF?!? says:

Her bulimic cheeks creep me out.

  41. Kaye says:

Disney is still really promoting Hannah Montana to young kids. Luckily, my 8 year old isn’t particularly interested. I think this video would be inappropriate for her. From my perspective though, this video is absolutely ridiculous. A giant nest? Really?

  42. lenora says:

her parents should be ashamed, she is selling clothes to tweens in walmart and caressing her cleavage in this video?

How is it possible that a dad sees that video and is fine with it???

As a father i guess he sold his soul when he saw the dollar signs.
I wonder if he becomes aroused watching his 17 yr old daughter be so sexual?

I also like how miley assumes it is okay b/c her parents approve.

  43. dxbravo says:

Horrible song, horrible video, skank of the century. See you on Celebrity Rehab, 2015..

  44. BEEBEEC says:

Their life is a circus and she’s a major money-making freak show for now..

  45. ligeia says:

that video is pretty horrible, but the song is actually even worse. you’d think with all that money they would be able to produce something catchy and non cringe worthy a-la lady gaga, but apparently not…oh and miley looks like any other teenager kid, she has no womanly body yet and her dressing up in all these revealing outfits just looks awkward. she’s not even thin, just kind of plain and boring looking…yawn.

  46. skeptical says:

song: Lindsay’s ‘Rumors’ meets heidi Montag’s ‘Superficial’
girl’s voice is soooo Autotuned. Pretty much anything from Heidi’s “album” could be in my head.

video… actually it was probably the video that put Rumors into my head… i see similarities all over. but Lindsay was also autotuned in ‘Rumors.
video makes me think Lindsay, Britney, some Madonna… and someone else I can’t fully remember, but something is VERY familiar here. maybe i’m halfway remembering a really old Madonna video? Either way…

This is old territory being marched on again. There’s nothing original here.

costume-wise..especially with that hair and makeup, i was seeing Hilary Duff trying to be Gaga. yea.. mess.

and the more i listen to this.. the more i seriously hear montag!

  47. azlynns mama says:

This is ridiculous. Yeah there could be worse but this is part of exactly what’s wrong with the youth of our generation. And then the parents….I blame a lot of it on them they approve this kind of behavior! I can’t tell how many times it looked like she was about ready to make out with a slew of men and -women- in this video! I honestly got the feeling she was trying to be like Lady Gaga. I can’t say Lady Gaga is any kind of real good role model either but I do like her music and so does my daughter I just don’t let my daughter watch her racy videos and listen to the songs that are really inappropriate. I’m most upset because Miley’s parents approved of this video and it’s wrong I’m sorry but it’s wrong. There are millions of little girls who still look up to Miley, she’s still on Disney, her show doesn’t end until after this Summer. Miley should’ve thought about that. And as far as Im concerned she’s not a legal adult yet, she needs to quit trying to act like one. For that matter even adults shouldn’t act like they do. The entertainment industry is over run by lust and sexual desires though, what more can we expect. I’m afraid miss Miley is running down the same path as Brittney.

  48. Brittney says:

shes supposed to be a “teen idol”???
yeah right. only if shes trying to show teens how to be the most sluttiest person out there. she IS the next britney spears.
