Amanda Seyfried’s cheesy, Lolita-styling in Teen Vogue

amanda5

You people know that Amanda Seyfried grates on my last nerve. I won’t go into details (but you can read about her in our archives), because most of you are just going to yell at me and tell me that she’s not full of herself, that she’s not a legend in her own mind, that she’s actually a really sweet, nice, lovely girl. The jury’s still out, in my opinion. But you know what? I’m still reading her interviews and I’m still interested in hearing what she has to say, so for that, mission accomplished. Of course, I still read Megan Fox’s interviews too. Just sayin’.

So Amanda is the cover girl for June’s Teen Vogue, all to promote Letters to Juliet. Even though I think the girl’s an a-hole, I do think she’s gorgeous, and the styling this photo shoot is the pits. WTF? You’ve got a little mini-Uma Thurman, and you’re trying to make her look like a Long Island Lolita. Here are some excerpts from the cover story (full piece here):

On the paparazzi following her: “I don’t really care about paparazzi—like, I’m not wearing makeup right now and I should be—but when someone follows me around on a day like that, a really wonderful, beautiful day . . .” she trails off. “Had I known he was there, I would have been really upset.”

On Mean Girls: “People still come up to me and say, ‘You were really funny in that,’ and I’m like, It’s not me. Tina Fey wrote everything I said!” she says, laughing. “I think I impressed a lot of people in Mean Girls. I don’t know how I pulled that off.”

On not being romantic: “It’s fun to play characters who have these ideals that you don’t have. Like, in Dear John, Channing [Tatum] and I had such a good time because we were pretending to be in love,” she says, but even though Letters to Juliet was “very romantically shot in a very romantic place,” it didn’t change her perspective. “A lot of people ask me, ‘Is Dominic the one?’ I don’t know, and I’m fine with that. Too much planning can lead to heartbreak. Love is great and possible, always, but it’s very rare to have the feeling that ‘I want to be with this person forever.'”

Her first boyfriend was Micah Alberti, who is now dating Rumer Willis: “I can’t remember if he said I love you first, or if I did.”

She’s musical too: When she’s not filming, Amanda spends a lot of time at her piano, a gift from Letters to Juliet director Gary Winick, which has inspired the classically trained singer—who has written a song with Damien Rice and contributed songs to the Mamma Mia! and Dear John soundtracks— to return to her musical roots. “I love being the background voice,” she says. “But I’m not interested in being in the spotlight.”

Her style: “Comfortable and simple with a little edge.”

She‘s no-drama, really: “I am successful now, and it’s wonderful. But the reason it is so wonderful is because I didn’t expect it to happen.”

[From Teen Vogue]

Eh. I like that she gave Tina Fey her props, and I like that she seems to be making an effort to sound low-key and no-drama. Oh, but I would love to know the dirt of Micah Alberti! How does a guy go from Amanda to Rumer Willis? Really, I’d like to know. I also didn’t know that she was so musical, although I’ve never seen Mamma Mia. Does she have a good voice?

  1. Ophelia says:

She seriously looks like Michelle Pfeiffer. Wow.

  2. meme says:

i’m getting sick of her and i haven’t even seen any of her movies.

  3. LindyLou says:

She is very pretty but the smug smirk on her face in the last pic makes me want to smack her.

  4. Zelda says:

I really cannot stand this girl—there is just an air of phony about her.

And “I think I impressed a lot of people…I don’t know how I pulled that off” reminds me of the 30rock where Jenna says that to show off you have to compliment yourself, but make it sound like a complaint (“I can’t even watch american Idol anymore, because I have perfect pitch!”)

Anyhow, hate this girl too. Glad I’m not the only one.
And the pick of the tied-up red top is way too 1992. I like the short shorts on the dock though. Very 1940s.

  5. allison says:

yes she has a beautiful voice.

    here are a few examples:

If you ever feel like watching a movie that is 100% fun and happy you should check out Mamma Mia. Seriously, every time i watch it, it gives me so much joy! 🙂

  6. snowball says:

All of those answers struck me as pretentious and I hate her shoes. Other than that, she’s mostly pretty and I like her hair?

(damning with faint praise and also wondering how you go from Amanda Seyfried to Rumer Willis)

  7. JoGirl says:

Personally, I blame Jersey Shore for Amanda’s fug styling. This is what the kids are wearing these days! Tragic, no?

  8. bros says:

she reminds me of dina manzo on the RHWO new jersey in the face.

  9. Megan says:

I think she looks absolutely stunning.

  10. Ruby Red Lips says:

I love Amanda! She gorg and really down to earth for a hollywood starlet

  11. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

No specific comment, really. I just thought of something my sister said after seeing a commercial for this last film or hers. ‘Is she the new one who has to be in everything now? Fine, whatever.’ And I concur. I think I’m just getting burnt out on this kid.

Sometimes you just don’t like someone, but it seems like you have to time it properly in order to avoid the ducking stool. For instance, I frigging can’t STAND Kate Winslet, but I’m going to have to wait until she commits some major league crimes to be able to say that without looking like a mouth-foaming freak.

  12. Joan says:

I don’t know much about her personality but she is really beautiful in these photos. Granted they are airbrushed for perfection, she is a really lovely girl. I just love that bathing suit!

  13. a says:

The middle 3 photos look like they are going for the 1980’s Michelle Pfeiffer look.

  14. freckles says:

Wow… the styling is just awful. That second one looks like a high school yearbook pic from the 80’s. Just really, really awful. I liked her interview though!

  15. Ricci says:

    Haha! so much jealousy here

  16. d says:

Is her mother the only other female actress in the first Alien movie? looks similar…

  17. Sudini says:

@Ophelia – that was my first thought too! She’s never looked better IMO. (Lol, but those shoes at the end…just. NO.)

  18. abbizmal says:

That girl is beautiful. Hate those shoes, but Amanda is stunning.

  19. Danielle says:

    Those shoes…and that lipstick! Ugh!

  20. Chico says:

I love these pics and her style. I don’t know about her personality, though. I saw her on Chelsea Handler and she had this quirky, funny tone. She implied that her boyfriend is more into fashion than she is, and so, he might be gay. It was actually very funny. I just think her points don’t come across well in interviews. You have to hear people speak to get what tone they have–they could be totally joking.

  21. simone says:

oh pls, go see mama mia, then we talk about her , ok?

  22. NayNay says:

I cannot stand her either. There is just something about her that irritates me. I do think she is so full of herself. That is obvious.

  23. k says:

I don’t get Teen Vogue. Don’t they use teenage models for the regular Vogue?

  24. rrrca says:

    i want those miu miu’s!

  25. MARKY MARK says:

You have to admit one thing about her. She is working hard. “BIG LOVE” and nice box office successes. I think she deserves a little leeway. She could have gone the Lindsey route

  26. Maritza says:

She was great in “Mama Mia”, I like her a lot, she is a very good actress besides beautiful. I liked her also in “Jennifer’s Body”. She can play very diverse roles very well.

  27. Bee says:

@Meme I’m sick of her too. And like I said on another post, it’s not because of anything she’s done. I’m just tired of seeing her face everywhere. Next “I only eat rabbit food and that’s how I stay so thin” starlet please.

  28. alexandra says:

@Ricci I agree bunch of insecure hateful…lovely ladies

  29. Kazoo81 says:

i think she’s beautiful and i like that she doesn’t give pre-scripted, fake answers.

that styling is atrocious. i’m guessing teen vogue was going for the teenage girl look but…no. they could’ve done something with less make up and CUTE denim.

  30. malina says:

    I think she looks pretty…

  31. kelbear says:

    @bros, your totally right!

  32. Ben says:

She has such a beautiful voice. I love her song Little House.

  33. malina says:

She also has a good voice, I watched mamma mia last weekend 🙂

  34. Vi says:

i like her but i agree that’s horrible styling in those photos. can’t blame her for that though.

  35. Sally says:

Awful, awful styling – but look at those legs!

  36. jeannified says:

She looks gorgeous…like a young Michele Pfeifer. However, those hideous shoes in that last picture! Ugh! They should be black, with thinner heel.

  37. jover says:

Yah, why don’t they use a young teen model on Vogue, they can still do the interview and the pics. Isn’t she something like 24? I concur with Zelda, don’t like her she appears phony, sorry.

  38. Camille says:

I think she looks adorable, pretty girl.

  39. Jeri says:

I don’t think she’s pretentious, I think she’s clueless in a Jessica Simpson type of way. She doesn’t realize how stupid some of the stuff she says is.

  40. debuggy says:

Has anyone noticed that in a lot of photos of her, they ‘de-BUG’ her BUGGY eyes? It’s some photoshop thing, they make her eyes look less bulgy, I’ve noticed it twice now — and no one ever catches it. Look at a candid, and then look at her in these pics, they do something to the eyeballs to make them less prominent. weird.

  41. Cleo says:

She’s like 25, what’s she doing in teen Vogue?

  42. Anon says:

I do not like her either. But I’m not entirely sure why.
I think it has to do with how she has made herself appear.
I get fake, and egotitis vibes from her.

  43. judyjudy says:

    I love this girl.

  44. NicoleAM says:

is it me or does she look like christina ricci in that top photo (red bathing suit)? Anyway, pics are great. Don’t care for her one way or the other.

  45. kim says:

that is not lolita syle, it’s early 90’s nick channel style. It’s gross!!!! funny ugly!!

  46. Missfit says:

Wow, she’s really cute and pretty! Now this is the stuff Christina Aguilera should be doing….she can show she’s still pretty and sexy and she doesn’t have to be hootchie about it.

  47. ab says:

her character was funny in ‘mean girls’, but didn’t think she will be this next big star… she does remind me of aishwariya rai!

  48. Zelda says:

    @Ricci
Yeah, that’s the only reason there is to not like someone. Jealousy.

Ah the genius argument of 8th graders and Jerry Springer guests.

  49. BabyCakes says:

I adore the shoes, however if her feet weren’t the size of two submarines, then they wouldn’t look so awful on her.

  50. Vic says:

I’ve been following Amanda’s career for a while now, reading up on her interviews, etc.

    She is anything BUT phony.

In fact, she got a lot of flack for being too candid. She confessed to having body image issues, comparing her appearance to other girls, and suffering from anxiety. I think she’s genuinely self-deprecating and nervous, which I find refreshing in a world of seemingly breezy, confident Hollywood stars.

  51. Sara says:

She’s a great actress. I like everything she’s been in. She looks a little bit creepy here though, like a busted Lolita.

Does anyone else think if she cut her hair she’s look a lot like Marilyn Monroe?

  52. scotchy says:

she has a generic voice, one that is great in musicals but is not actually good.
it is technical and yes i heard the examples and saw mamma mia, she is pretty too bad she has to starve herself to stay that way.

  53. canadianchick says:

I liked her in Mamma Mia and enjoyed the photo shoot-doesnt anyone remember being a teen and liking over the top dressup like that?
@debuggy I agree her eyes have been debugged from Photochop.

  54. chicoulina says:

Wow!!!She’s Gorgeous!!!I never liked her eyes, they always seemed to big,or too far apart, now I don’t know what she did but she looks amazing. Is it the eyebrows?
If Michelle Pfeifer and Uma Therman had a daughter, that’s what she would look like.

  55. chicoulina says:

I don’t think they photoshop her eyes, because lately her eyes look much better, softer…I remember a few years ago, maybe 7-8 years Angelina Jolie had the same eye effect, very big buggy eyes and then it vanished. Her eyes became softer and seemed smaller. Also Michelle Pfeifer before she became a big star had buggy eyes and then one day bam she transformed into a swan, just like Angelina and Amanda now.Is it the makeup, the eyebrows,a thyroid problem or surgery?Who knows?

  56. ViktoryGin says:

    “Classically trained singer”. Ha. Funny.

Seriously, she’s better than average, but that not saying much with the seeming dearth of skill these days. I do like her cover of “Thank You for the Music” by ABBA, I’m ashamed to admit. Her vibrato is a little quick for my taste, and she needs to work on her breath support.

She’s really pretty here. I can say that at least.

  57. lucy2 says:

Wow those photos are so badly styled. Really dated looking and just weird.
I like her as an actress, and I do think she is very pretty and does have a good voice. And I have to like that unlike many other young actresses, she’s not trying to push a record deal too, like the Gossip Girls and the Disney girls.
More and more though, I’m starting to think she’s trying too hard to sound a certain way in interviews. I just saw her on Craig Ferguson’s show and she was really self deprecating, beyond being modest or trying not to sound self involved, and instead it came off as simply fishing for compliments. It was really weird.

  58. grrrlgrace says:

I’m not a huge fan of hers, but I think the pics are adorable. And yes I agree…they are “de-bugging” those eyes!
