Catherine Zeta-Jones’ face exhaustively mocked by Daily Mail

Film Society of Lincoln Center 2010 Chaplin.Awards Gala Honors Michael Douglas New York City

The other day, I threw up some photos of Catherine Zeta-Jones at the Chaplin Awards Gala, which was Monday (I put them in the links on Tuesday). While I focused on her unflattering sparkly trash-bag dress, I did notice that it wasn’t really Catherine’s best public appearance by a long shot. She looked tired. She looked thin and drawn. And her makeup looked poorly applied. Still – beautiful woman, and even beauties have off-days. Not according to The Daily Mail, however. The Mail’s Alice Hart-Davis and British plastic surgeon dissected everything that was wrong with Catherine’s appearance, and they are exhaustive in their criticism. The full bitchy Mail piece is here (including some supposedly high-res photos of Catherine that I think are retouched to make her look worse), and here are some of the highlights:

Oh Catherine, whatever is going on with your face? That photograph taken on Monday as you arrived at the Film Society’s Chaplin Award Gala in New York was attention-grabbing for all the wrong reasons. Dull, lifeless skin with open pores and blemishes, puffy eyes, and a curiously smooth-looking forehead.

Catherine, who also appears to have lost a lot of weight, says that the way she looks is just the result of fitting in seven shows a week on Broadway with all the usual demands of family life. Whatever she is or isn’t doing to herself, one thing looks clear: she’s not only working too hard, but trying too hard.

Here, ALICE HART-DAVIS and plastic surgeon RAJIV GROVER deconstruct Catherine’s latest look:

HAIR: We’re used to CZJ with her tumbling, maid-of-the-valleys locks. Scraping it back so severely gives an all-too-clear view of every aspect of her face and as a result is very ageing on someone only 40. Is this the celebrity version of the infamous ‘Croydon facelift’, where pulling the hair back into a tight ponytail lifts the skin around the eyes and forehead? It also reveals the odd filament of silver-grey hair which, being coarser and harder to tame than other hairs, are striving to wriggle free from her slicked back ‘do’.

FACE: ‘Before Catherine had children, her brow line always looked quite low,’ says surgeon Rajiv Grover. ‘It didn’t flatter her and it now appears higher, emphasising the youth and brightness of her eyes, which is something that could be achieved with an endoscopic brow lift.’

FOREHEAD: However tight that bun is pulled, the preternatural smoothness of Catherine’s forehead makes it look suspiciously like that of a habitual Botox-user. In the high-resolution version of this photo, which I’ve cranked up to maximum enlargement, there isn’t a single furrow or fault-line on her forehead which, for someone who has reached 40, is both unusual and remarkable.

‘My experience of patients who appear in the public eye is that very few of them could look as good as they do without some support,’ says Rajiv Grover.

LIPS: There have, in the past, been photos of Catherine with lips that look as if they are inflating, rather than deflating, with age. But in this shot, there is no sign of the tell-tale raised edge to her lips that is the giveaway of having had lip-filling injections.

COMPLEXION: Eesh! She’s wearing a lot of foundation which is also clinging on to and showing up every bit of roughness and the odd acne-scar on her cheeks. Too much time spent in the sun? That can roughen the smoothest skin. E yes: Catherine is popularly supposed to have had a blepharoplasty, aka an eye-lift, around 2001, though this is not something that she has seen fit to discuss. The wrinkles beneath her eyes are small but in evidence – doubtless the natural result of time and her full life with work, marriage and children taking its toll.

‘Her eyes don’t look in any way “lifted”,’ says Rajiv Grover, ‘though they do look brighter and more open than before, which might have been achieved by an endoscopic brow lift rather than blepharoplasty.’

EYEBROWS: Her natural eyebrows once fulsome and bushy, have been pruned within an inch of their life. Then, to go with her heavy evening make-up, they’ve been carefully enhanced with eyebrow pencil or eyeshadow, to the extent that they appear to have been dyed, shaped and stuck on.

DIET AND EXERCISE: CZJ has usually had a remarkably relaxed attitude to diet and exercise, railing against the Hollywood cult of the super-skinny, and happily admitting to piling on 50lb during her first pregnancy, which took ‘diet and exercise’ to shift. When she began to look alarmingly thin, in October 2007, she had to deny reports that she was anorexic. She didn’t look a whole lot fatter by the opening night of her Broadway show last December. Dance has always been her favourite exercise choice; after the birth of her daughter Carys seven years ago, she used a tough, dance-based routine to get back into shape.

‘My muscles have memory from the time I danced, and it’s quick for me to get back in shape, but I’m not fanatical,’ she says. Now, though, it looks as if she has gone too far.

[From The Daily Mail]

I’ll say it again – I do think Zeta looked like hell for this appearance. Not just hell, she looked like an old lady, much older than her (alleged) real age of 40. In recent red carpet appearances, she has tended to look thin and tired, but still beautiful, so I don’t know what’s going on with her. Maybe she really did struggle with her role on Broadway. Maybe she’s just going through a rough patch. Maybe she needs a new plastic surgeon, I don’t know.

Usually her makeup looks pretty good, but not in these pics. She looks bad, and dead tired under all the paint. Was she performing, because she looks very theatrical. And if she’s doing so many shows a week, then she is practically living in stage makeup, which may explain her bad skin. But I am glad that no one takes pics like this of me – I would be dissected!

  2. YT says:

When someone loses weight at any age, their face falls. It takes awhile for the skin to tighten up again. A real bummer for those who lose weight only to look like hell. Check her out in a couple of months.

@badrockandro is right about stage makeup being bad for the skin.

The Daily Mail needs to get a hobby if the best they can do is spend so much time and space trashing the way someone looks. I want to see high-res photos of the writers for comparison.

  3. canadianchick says:

There’s no way she’s 40, and how 80’s is that make up? She’d need a chisel to get that junk off her eyelids.

  4. crash2GO2 says:

I think she looks beautiful. I’d like to see some high res photos of those writers so I could point out all of their flaws.

  5. bellaluna says:

I just turned 40, and I, too, am without a “furrow or fault-line” on my forehead. While it’s no secret that I don’t believe CZJ is only 40, there’s no reason for these “professionals” to be so merciless about her photo. So she has a rough photo; who doesn’t?

@ YT and crash – Ditto on the pix of the writers!

  6. cobbler says:

True, she’s not looking her best – and I’m all for the fun of being a little ‘bitchy’ about celebrities from time to time, but jeez, the British press are a tough crowd! They seem to have a knack for poring over every detail of what plastic surgery she’s had, may have had, or needs to have – such a waste of time, and pretty boring reading! “Exhaustively mocked” indeed.

  7. Jewbitch says:

I think easing up on the eye makeup would make a big difference.

  8. guesty says:

compared to the pics from a few days ago…these pics are definitely an improvement.

she could just be really really tired right now + rapid weight loss would equal a case of the temporary fug.

  9. N says:

It seems like the same situation as Jessica Simpson’s last round of photographs – too much make up! If anyone, even a ‘make up artist’ applies too much foundation, powder, etc. it is going to cake and look rough….Her face is too light, coupled with the dark eyes and make up…eek. JS and CZJ are beautiful women who need to stop caking on so much make up…it definitely obscures their otherwise more youthful appearance.

  10. cedar falls says:

I don’t get the “CZJ is lying about her age” stuff – she’s been in showbiz since she was a teen and there’s photo evidence. Unless she was the youngest ever-looking 25-year old in junior theatre…

  11. Ann says:

Just a nasty article with photoshopped photos to make her look WORSE.

Why don’t they take men’s looks apart like that?

    Sexist and lame.

  12. sasha says:

The Daily Misogynist strikes again. That piece of shit rag (please stop linking to it and giving them hits!) is constantly calling out famous women for not being twenty and perfect anymore.

Out of all our loathsome tabloids it’s probably the worst.

  13. James says:

They did this is because the British actually does not like Ms Cahterine Zeta Jones, just like the American somehow doesn’t really appreciate Ms Gwyneth Paltrow.

How funny the two countries somehow managed to swap these two women! Everyone is happy!

  14. Luci says:

    she looks f*cking amazing!!
what were the people in daily mirror thinking of?!!

but its true that she’s too thin

  15. grumbles says:

she is stunningly beautiful and i wish she would forego surgery and age appropriately. She would provide a service to all women over 40……

  16. Lway says:

I think her family has been through a lot over the last year. Give her a break – she’s not 24 anymore!

  17. Andie M says:

In the UK we can The Daily Mail the Daily Hate – the writers and readers are awful and stand for everything that is wrong in the world today. The newspaper makes my blood boil and I try to avoid it, it is full of negative slants on everything. Hateful rag!

  18. Maritza says:

Now with these digital cameras you can see every flaw, no one is safe. All she needs is a good facial to get rid of those open pores, other than that she looks good, but I agree, she looks older than 40.

  19. Kelaa Khaa says:

CJZ could try some witch hazel, works wonders for tightening the pores.

  20. Just a Poster says:

She is older than me.. she still looks great, but no way is she 40!

She is beautiful, and I wish she would lay off the bad makeup.. and to be honest, looking at her skin is not a good advertisement for the beauty line she reps. JMHO of course

  21. EB says:

I will add to comments that the Daily Fails is a piece of trash. They actually, actively hate women at that paper and this type of article is what usually goes. Don’t link to them or cover their garbage – you need to be criticizing them more!

  22. original kate says:

attention, daily mail: i’m 40 and have no wrinkles on my face, either… so what? geez, it isn’t that unusual, especially if you wear sunblock, drink tons of water and don’t smoke. CZJ is wearing waaaay too much makeup here – hideous! if she scraped that off and gained about 10 pounds she’d be her usual gorgeous self.

  23. Tru says:

someone does not like her at The Daily Mail, they are a bit too harsh.

I think she is still stunning and as mentioned above her family has been through alot and its not easy to be on Broadway, nightly for months. geesh, give her a break.

All that dancing has her super slim, she needs a vacation.

umm, she looks better than Madge!

  24. Wholesome1 says:

The assessment in the article is fair- she looks her age (40+) and she’s had some work done. No big deal but I’m surprised she doesn’t attend to that sun damage- she’s got quite a bit.

  25. Lisa says:

Her skin looks terrible, unmosturized and tired with giant pores, she should have used a primer under the makeup, my favorite is Giorgio Armani. She looks 48 in these photos, and she needs a laser peel stat.

  26. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

    yep, sexist and stupid.

  27. the Daily Mail seriously have it in for her for some reason O_O today there are TWO articles slating her, the one about her face and annother “catherine has disgusting fashion sense” piece meanwhile they continue to pretend Kerry Katona is Elizabeth Taylor or something lol
She isn’t looking her best at all, i’m hoping the weight loss is down to the theatre work and when she’s done she’ll put it back on because when she was curvey she was one of the hottest women EVER. still a great woman, just keep strong, eat loads and ignore the Daily Mail 😛

  28. Anne says:

she is not too thin, she’s a healthy weight. Check the BMI charts. Why does everyone want fat people to stay fat? Oh, because it makes them feel better about their own chubs.

  29. Jeri says:

I’m not a fan but in fairness I think even a young beautifull actress could look bad all done up for a red carpet in a extreme closeup.

  30. Cazzyb-uk says:

Like a younger verson of Angelica Huston in the 2nd pic down!

She’s changed loads since the Darling Buds of May anyhoo!

    🙂

  31. zen says:

    I think she looks great.
I think the writers that bash every part of these people should put their own pics up as well. I bet they have a lot more imperfections than she does or ever will.

  32. Cazzyb-uk says:

Plus the Daily Mail pic has blatently been tampeted with!

  33. Sonja says:

CZJ was a smoker (I hope she gave up the habit) and smoking ages a person inside and out. I do believe she is 40 but the years of smoking have caught up with her. However, she is a classic beauty and people need to get a grip and stop picking apart women based on their looks!

  34. Darlene says:

It’s bad lighting and too much makeup. She looks great in the right lighting. That was just a very unflattering shot. She looks great.

  35. Mentok the Mind Taker says:

Now that Katie Price has crawled back under whatever rock she crawled out from, they’ve to find something to fill up space.

(Cheryl, Kassell-my version of Katy & Russell, KK, & Suri Cruise)

I miss Katie Price so much. God cut out my tongue.

  36. Gaga Fab says:

Poor girl, she is one of the most beautiful actresses in the world and she has a off moment and is being dragged through the mud. I love her looks and I would dare anyone of the haters out there to show up on the red carpet on their own and see what their mugs look like on camera. no one looks great all the time. I guess she is supposed to now go pull a Heidi Montag and get 10 surgies to make everyone happy.

Her stepson is in prision, she is working herself to exhuastion, plus she is married to Michael Douglas, she has enough to worry about.

  37. abbizmal says:

I don’t get why some of these stunning women need much make up at all. The eyes are way over done.

  38. Ruffian9 says:

original kate: Likewise. I’m also 40 with no wrinkles and a (suspiciously!)smooth forehead. Sunblock, sleep and not smoking count for a lot.

  39. la chica says:

she looks to be between 50-55 IMHO. she looks good for a 55 YO woman.

  40. blinditemreader says:

Maybe it’s time for her to admit her age. Otherwise, I think it’s pretty mean to rip apart a woman like this.

  41. NicoleAM says:

looks more like a case of god awful make-up.

  42. Lezlie says:

She’s a smoker, that’s how her skin got to looking so aged for a hollywood(welsh really) star. Remember those pictures of her 8 monthes pregnant smoking, I guess they were about 7 years ago!!! Not judging, just remembering that she is a die hard smoker and it looks like its aging her face and neck skin. bukbukbuk bukakk

  43. Orbit says:

I’m sure it’s dreamy to be married to that old guy with the junkie son.

  44. Seer says:

There has been a lot of talk some years back about how she actually lies about her age by 10 years. She has already had one face lift, so for a 50 year-old woman she looks about right.

She’s very attractive and she has a lot of style.
