Sandra Bullock’s big comeback role will be a rom-com with Ryan Reynolds

I’ll admit it, I never saw The Proposal. I don’t care for Ryan Reynolds nor formulaic romantic comedies on general principle, which is why I didn’t see it initially. Then I didn’t see it just because I was too lazy to go look for it (the Blockbuster closest to my house shut down, sad face). Anyway, long story short, I have no idea if Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock had or have any chemistry together. I tended to suspect they didn’t, although Bullock is certainly capable of having chemistry with a brick wall. My guess is that Ryan and Sandra were close friends rather than the ideal rom-com duo. Maybe I’m wrong. But they’re going to get a second chance to make a first impression (on me): Ryan and Sandra are reuniting for a new rom-com called Most Wanted. It will be Sandra’s first film since her Oscar-winning role in The Blind Side. It will also be her first role since the whole marriage implosion thing.

The creative team behind “The Proposal” — stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, director Anne Fletcher, writer Pete Chiarelli and producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman — are reuniting for “Most Wanted,” an action comedy project that sold to Universal over the weekend.

The story sees Bullock as a criminal suspect with Reynolds as an FBI agent who is supposed to be escorting her to court when the two are ambushed and forced to go on the run. The project is described as having a tone similar to that of “Midnight Run,” Universal’s 1988 action comedy starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. Universal is developing a sequel to “Midnight Run.”

The pitch originally went into Disney, the company that made “Proposal,” the hit romantic comedy made via its Touchstone label that grossed more than $317 million and was part of Bullock’s comeback year. Since the movie’s June 2009 release, however, Disney has undergone a regime change and the company is de-emphasizing Touchstone, preferring to focus on the core Disney brand and hoping to make movies that can be taken advantage by the wide spectrum of the company.

When Disney passed, the team took a breather before taking it to the rest of the town. By late last week, the project was fielding multiple offers before being captures by Universal. Reynolds will also exec produce along with this Dark Trick Films partner Jonathon Komack-Martin.

Chiarelli is a former MGM exec who in his spare time wrote “The Proposal.” The script has kicked off a writing career, with the scribe working on “What Men Want” for Paramount and “Forever 21” at DreamWorks. He is repped by CAA and Mosaic. Fletcher, who is developing “Enchanted 2” for Disney, is repped by UTA. Bullock and Reynolds are repped by CAA.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Eh, it sounds like an interesting concept, I suppose. It reminds me a little of that one Bullock did with Ben Affleck… whajamacallit, Forces of Nature. Two people thrown together, a series of hotel rooms, scrounging for available transportation. Now, I don’t want to be rude or anything, because I really am on The Bullock Bandwagon, for real, but isn’t Sandra above this sh-t? Yes, she’s a good actress, and yes, she’s still America’s Sweetheart and a rom-com queen and all, and maybe she just wants to make a fun movie rather than an Oscar-bait one, but still. You’d think that this project wouldn’t read “Bullock!” immediately. Unless she gets to beat the crap out of Ryan. That would be good. I might go see it in that case.

That top photo cracks me up, he’s sooo checking out her ‘girls’ there. I didn’t see The Proposal, may at some point, but I don’t like him so it may be a while. Maybe Sandra just wants something to do and along comes this safe, possibly fun movie and it just fits the bill.

  2. Sol says:

Im getting a little tired of all this Sandra Bullock thing. A comeback? Come on it’s not like she quit acting or did anything wrong. She had a marriage that went wrong as it happens to millions. Enough already.

  3. Anna says:

What is that supposed to mean, big comeback role? Sandra came back about two years ago already and she’s been going from strength to strength ever since. Plus yes, she just did The Proposal with Ryan, so it’s not like this is a new romcom combo for her. They did have chemistry though, so it’s not a bad pairing. Colour me majorly confused on the comeback thing though.

  4. sassenach says:

She doesn’t have to do an Oscar bait movie or anything but she starred in two romcoms last year. Maybe she should change it up a bit. I didn’t think she would be going back to work so soon after adopting Louis.

  5. canadianchick says:

It’s worth seeing the Proposal to see Ryan with his shirt off. I had a couple laughs at their jokes, and there is good shoe p*rn as Sandy wears some Laboutins. Betty White was loopy in it, but good. Ryan and Sandy have chemistry-see first photo-could he be more obvious at the boob check? And hey, it’s a chance for her to spend more time with Sexy Scarjo.

  6. Marjalane says:

I thought they were great together in the proposal; It was a “cute” movie. I too, am a little sick at the media insisting on painting Sandra Bullock as this poor, sad, victim- she made a bad choice, she’s dealing with it, end of story. All the pity hype kind of makes me not like her as much, and it isn’t her doing.

  7. Snarf says:

That pic at the top of the post where he’s checking out her boobs is priceless.

  8. Kelbear says:

Loved The Proposal! And I love Ryan!

  9. Kaboom says:

I understand that the two are old friends and maybe just enjoyed working together. With their combined star power they can make it happen, so why not go for it?

  10. Green Is Good says:

The Proposal was a cute movie. Light, fluffy fare. Worth the rental.

  11. CT says:

They definitely had chemistry in The Proposal, but I have very little faith in this screenwriter. The ending of The Proposal was heinous, sexist, and awful. Here’s a hint, would-be screenwriters: A strong woman needn’t be an ice-cold bitch, and she also doesn’t need a man to “show her who’s boss!”

    Seriously.

  12. lucy2 says:

I’m not a big rom com fan, but I did like the Proposal, it was cute. I find Ryan so incredibly boring though, his role could have been done by any number of actors and probably would have been exactly the same. He doesn’t bring anything interesting to the table, IMO.

I would love to know what she does as far as exercise, because wow, she has never looked better.

  13. waldemar says:

You should see The Proposal, Kaiser. Betty White plays Ryan grandmother. It’s fantastic!!

  14. Mare says:

She is lovely, beautiful, smart, funny and classy but she’s not a very good actress. I’ve seen plenty of Sandra’s films and she’s never above average.

  15. Guest says:

Count me in as one who is confused by the “comeback” tag – where’s Sandra been exactly…she released 3 movies last year. She hasn’t even been laying that low since the JJ scandal – I mean it’s been 4 months and she’s been on People and papped and appeared on two awards shows. Her husband might have cheated but it isn’t like she lost her ability to act/work and is now attempting to try it again!

On the project front, this movie sounds an awful lot like The Bounty Hunter to me. And for that matter all the other action/rom-coms that have been coming out/are coming out this year (Date Night, Killers, Knight and Day). Must be Hollywood’s new favorite genre. Anyways, The Bounty Hunter has taken more than $134 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, so if this new project can keep the costs down it is likely to do well too given both leads have pretty good fanbases. The Proposal was no better or worse than any other similar genre pic – though I’m no fan of Reynolds, so I would prefer to see Bullock paired with someone else.

Anyways, it’s as good a project for her to take as any other I guess – I mean it isn’t like The Blindside was some arty serious fare. Let’s be honest, she won the Oscar just like Julia Roberts did for Erin Brokovich – playing a tought talking female after a celebrated box office career. Bullock’s win was more based on popularity and her entire career rather than an amazing performance – and she knows that herself as evidenced by her comments to that effect when accepting both the Globe and Oscar. Why would anyone expect she is suddenly going to be “above” the genre that she is best known for?

  16. Disco says:

I’m seriously tired of the whole comeback thing too. She just won a Oscar! How is it she needs a comeback?

  17. snowball says:

I’d love to see her do something with the Coen brothers. I think she’d kick butt with that sort of odd sideways humor.

  18. vi says:

i liked them in the proposal but i love formulaic rom coms and sandra bullock generally so i suppose it’s not an objective opinion!

  19. Aspen says:

I absolutely LOVE formula romcoms. They make me happy when I’m bored, and though I am appropriately ashamed of myself for liking them…there you have it.

The Proposal was cute, and Betty White made that film worth watching. I honestly thought Ryan Reynolds and Sandra had great chemistry.

  20. Persistent Cat says:

I loved The Proposal as well. I really like Sandra Bullock and I have no feelings either way about Ryan Reynolds. There’s great shoe porn and I squealed when he “dropped” her Louis Vuitton luggage in the lake.

  21. Feebee says:

Comeback? That would suggest her career had bombed. She just won an oscar and 2/3 of her last films were successful. Taking a few months of personal time hardly warrants a ‘comeback’ headline.

    Love the top photo too!

  22. meme says:

@sol me too. i’m tired of her already. you can make a comeback if you never went anywhere.

  23. Kolby says:

Can I just say that those GIANT platform heels that all the celebrities seem to be wearing these days do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for them? They are hideous and make their feet look ridiculous. Seriously, whenever I see a star dressed to the nines and looking fabulous, and then I scroll down to see those huge shoes, it makes me want to scream.

  24. Scarlet Vixen says:

So, other than Scar-Jo am I the only woman out here madly in love with Ryan Reynolds?? Hell, I’m not even sure she’s that into him. I’ve wanted to jump his bones since he was on “Two guys and a girl” on tv. And “Van Wilder” and Blade: Trinity”? Oh.My.God. My man even agreed that Ryan Reynolds is the one man on the planet I’m allowed to cheat with.

But, as much as I love them both, I think it’s too soon after the Proposal for another formulaic rom-com.

  25. bondbabe says:

Maybe this rom-com role is a vehicle whereby she can ease back into acting rather than taking on a dramatic role right after all the scandal.

  26. Ursaline says:

@ Scarlet Vixen: I’m totally onboard with you. I had the hots for Ryan in 2 Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place too. And The Proposal, while formulaic and cheesy at the end, was sweet and had great actors in it. The chemistry between the cast was far better than the script, and the luggage in the water was only one of the many funny scenes. I laughed out loud at the eagle and the dog. Sandra did the grumpy exec face beautifully without being really hateful, and the bickering between her and Ryan was engaging enough to leave me wanting to see more of them together. There was a visible, genuine warmth between them that extended through on camera.

Now, I thought I had read that Sandra was previously slated to do this, before the scandal. She has four movies in the hopper and I think she’s producing them as well. And if she had a great experience working with Ryan, who is a friend of hers with no awkward baggage and she personally knows his wife well enough to mouth kiss her on the MTV awards, then why not? maybe she doesn’t want some creep male lead trying to come on to her or invade her privacy with Louis. It sounds like a win-win scenario, as long as they can get all of their ducks lined up and make a decent movie that isn’t a total piece of crap.

And the top photo of him checking her out is a riot! He’s seen “the girls already” and probably didn’t complain too loudly.

  27. voiceover says:

LOVE that top pic! Also don’t get the “comeback” line. ALL celebs have movie bombs and boxoffice hits. Perhpas you were referring to that awful movie “All about Steve”? Then Sandra turns around a wins an Oscar. How is this failing? Or maybe you mean “comeback” from her divorce? Hell, the woman has everything, plus the support of America. She’s doing just fine.

  28. Kelly says:

The Proposal was good! And very funny. HEllO, it had Betty White in it! Worth the rental.

  29. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    @Scarlet Vixen:

You should head on over to Pajiba. Dustin Rowles isn’t a woman or gay, but danged if he doesn’t love Ryan Reynolds-beyond all objectivity or reason. I decided to give Ry-Ry a few more chances based on the breathless rapturous praise he heaps on him. Ummmm…

Sometimes you just love people for no reason, like your children. We should just admit it. I don’t understand it with Ry-Ry. One day this dude’s bovine gaze marries up to a pair of lifeless fish eyes and suddenly he’s charismatic? Tell me another one.

  30. Ling says:

Does anyone else notice that he always looks a bit cross-eyed? CANNOT BE UNSEEN. hahaha

  31. Kim says:

I know shes America Sweetheart but she is not the greatest actress. She is very medicore a la Jennifer Aniston. Ok in romantic roles but not great. Her oscar was token – ANY decent actress in Hollywood could have played that role just as well.

  32. Danielle says:

Betty White and Sandy were hilarious in their wooded scene together in The Proposal. Those girls were born to make people laugh! You should see it.

  33. Camille says:

It sounds like that bounty thing that Gerry Butler did, doesn’t it?
But with these 2 in the leads I imagine it would be a far better movie. Well one could hope.
I’m like you Kaiser, I don’t generally like rom-coms, they are usually ALL the same (last good ones that I have seen were: 500 days of Summer and Wristcutters: A Love Story, both very different takes on a stale genre and both worth seeing if you haven’t), however I have seen The Proposal. And although it was very much predictable, I did find it entertaining enough for what it was. RR and SB did have chemistry and both are fun actors to watch (if RR takes his shirt off in a film I will watch him in anything lol). Plus it had Bettty White!!

  34. Ruffian9 says:

The third picture just makes me deliriously happy.

  35. Sally says:

Love the top pic! And the third pic too. That gold/peach dress is pretty.

The Proposal was ok, pretty standard as far as rom coms go – bonuses are Betty White and RR shirtless. Chemistry was pretty good!
