Angelina Jolie is attached to play Cleopatra

jolie2

Angelina Jolie might play Cleopatra, according to several sources. This isn’t some tabloid bullsh-t either. Author Stacy Schiff wrote the book Cleopatra: A Life, and it’s being adapted for the screen currently. When Schiff was out promoting the book, she dropped the bomb: Angelina is attached to the project while it’s in development. This isn’t just some chick trying to sell her book either – super-producer Scott Rudin (The Hours, Doubt, No Country For Old Men) not only confirmed that the film is in development, but also confirmed that Angelina is attached. Or his office, anyway: “Rudin’s office confirms that the project “is being developed for and with Jolie.”” Here’s more:

Legendary Egyptian queen Cleopatra is one of those subjects that always seem to cause trouble whenever Hollywood dips her into the milky bath of filmmaking. Back in 1963, Joseph L Mankiewicz’ version all but emptied the coffers of 20th Century Fox and became more famous for its troubles than its release.

More recently, Steven Soderbergh has been trying to get an epic musical version on its feet, going as far as locking in Hugh Jackman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Ray Winstone to star with members of popular indie rock combo Guided By Voices linked to the score. But that’s been shoved aside in favour of the 17 other projects he’s juggling at the moment and seems no closer to making his To Do list just yet.

So producer Scott Rudin will be hoping he has more luck with his own take on Cleo’s story, which he’s developing “for and with” Angelina Jolie.

According to author Stacy Schiff, who talked to USA Today (via The Playlist), Rudin is pushing ahead on the project, based on her book Cleopatra: A Life, which he optioned for Sony back in 2006 when it was just a young, 10-page proposal.

Now the tome is actually on the shelves, and while Schiff was out on the rounds promoting it, she dropped Jolie’s name as a likely star for the adaption, with Rudin confirming that she’s involved in developing the film.

Of course, whether it actually comes to fruition is another matter, especially since Jolie is a woman in demand, and she’s involved with any number of films that have little chance of ever making it out of limbo.

Still, she’s not a bad choice for Cleopatra – she proved she could do the ancient queen shtick in Oliver Stone’s Alexander (whether or not you think the movie worked, she looked the part), so it’s not exactly outside the realms of possibility. When asked who she’d pick as Marc Anthony, Schiff sparked to the distinctly unimaginative choice of Brad Pitt, but surely you lot can do better? Have at it…

[From Empire Online]

Now, is this a smart choice? I know in my heart that after all of that inbreeding, Cleopatra looks nothing like the romantic, beautiful idea (here for Hollywood’s last idea of Cleopatra) we have of her. But let’s go with the Hollywood notion that Cleo was gorgeous. Is Angelina the best representation we have? Well, I find her beautiful, but I’m sure a lot of people are going to start yelling about skinny bitch this, blah, blah that. If that’s the case, who would be a better choice? Very few modern actresses have the ability to do period drama and actually look authentic or timeless. I was also going to say that I thought Angelina might be too old to play Cleo, but she’s not, I looked it up. By most accounts, Cleo was probably in her late 30s when she (SPOILER) killed herself. My verdict? Angelina might be one of the better candidates for Cleo, and if the film gets made, it would be nice to see her in the role. Just don’t let her do an accent, for the love of God. So… who will play Marc Anthony? How about that gorgeous Daniel Craig? And Caesar? He was old when he boned Cleo. Maybe… Ian McKellan? Noooo.

  1. Sarah says:

I think she’s the perfect choice.

  2. YT says:

Jolie is a good choice, especially with her exotic features. Cleopatra supposedly was no beauty, but that could be biased bad press at the time. Who knew InTouch has been in business for centuries. Her charms were based on intelligence, sex appeal (yup, non-beautiful people have sex appeal), fortune, and power.

  3. Rachel says:

All I can think of is that horrid accent she had in Alexander and I hope she won’t try to do something like that again! If so, I won’t be seeing it.

  4. mln says:

She is a really good choice because she is exotic and Cleopatra was Greek/Egyptian(let the debate begin on her ethnicity) also the obvious that she embodies alot of the qualities that Cleopatra had, seductive, controvesial etc. Daniel Craig would be perfect for Marc Anthony I hope Brad Pitt doesn’t do it too many comparisions to the Taylor/Burton flick

  5. Bubbling says:

It’s a good choise, and obvious one if I might add. Who else? I recon Monica Bellucci or Penelopa Cruise

  6. bite me says:

what about thaundie newton (sp) or maybe jennifer aniston since shes half greek

  7. A.K.A says:

Monica Bellucci as Cleopatra, now she would be amazing!

I really don’t want to see Angelina doing this because it’s going to give off this “fake” feeling to the movie (I can’t describe it but I get that feeling when watching alot of her movies)

And you just know that Angie will be doing an accent, I’m cringing already!

  8. krissy_kitty says:

I’m gonna say it because I think he is hot… Gerard Butler for Mark Anthony… How about Anthony Hopkins for Caesar, or is he too old? And Bite Me, I like your guess for Cleo!

  9. krissy_kitty says:

Oh and Butler and Newton were in Rock n Rolla together and I liked them… they do look good together… just a guess…;)

  10. Rosalee says:

Excellent choice for the role..I doubt if I would see it..except on a Sunday night after there was nothing worth watching..I have long stopped viewing anything she is in since her life has overwhelmed us through the tabs. The movie magic has faded away with each headline now her private life has over taken her career.

  11. Larissa says:

@A.K.A. : I get the same vibe from her.
The one time I didn´t get fake feeling was at her performance in GIA,probably because she shared a lot in common with the character (at the time).

Anyway, am not attracted to the whole EPIC BS movie gender so I´ll probably skip that one, AJ or not.

  12. padiddle says:

Alexander is a terrible, terrible movie but the fiance and I have always said that movie was the absolute most stunning and sexy Jolie ever looked.
    Now the accent…
Also, I think they should pick someone else for Cleopatra, I don’t like or dislike her but I hate how she’s always everyone’s “go to” for roles of seductive and powerful women. There’s plenty of sexy ladies in Hollywood.

  13. Canucklehead says:

    Yawn…

big surprise, you think anyone will ever be able to make a movie about a female leader and not have Yawngelina attached?

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I’m sorry but she is a seriously dull acress

  14. Maritza says:

Angelina is a good choice and maybe Daniel Day Lewis or Christian Bale as Marc Anthony, both great method actors.

  15. LindaR says:

Yes, the dreadful Boris and Natasha accent. Of course she’ll use it again. Her repertoire is very limited.

  16. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

Oh great, another movie with a bad accent.

  17. carrie says:

she was ridiculous in “alexander” so i think it’s a stupid idea

  18. bite me says:

oh i really like the idea of DDL for marc anthony, even though his nose others me

  19. Lilias says:

I agree with A.K.A. in that Angelina can come off fake in her movies. That’s the trouble with watching her is that she is so unique in her look that I can’t get past knowing it’s “Angelina Jolie” playing whatever character instead of seeing just the character.

The biggest problem I’d have with this casting is that Cleopatra was probably quite brown and it’s been pretty much scientifically proven that she was at least part African based on skeletal structures of other Africans in the area at the time.

I tire of Hollywood casting Egyptians as white people. All of the paintings that they did of themselves were of brown and really dark brown/black people. I just don’t understand it.

  20. Eileen Yover says:

Let’s hope she works on her accent because her last one in Alexander was horrid! I think Cathrine Zeta-Jones would be good, she’s exotic and not in every movie with a big female lead. Also Rachel Weisz is exotic looking and could pull it off.

  21. Mika says:

I like it. She’s the only BIG name actress who can still blend into characters for me. That said, Cleopatra was 17 when she met Julius Caesar so I hope they can blur that lens.

Julius Caesar was roughly 56 when he died, so I’m going to say… Jeremy Irons? I think he’d treat the role with dignity and he’s sexy right?

Octavian was 18 when Caesar died and 32 at the battle of Actium so I’m going to go middle and say Taylor Kitch.

For Antony, I’m going with Christian Bale, say what you like about the dude, but he can ACT. He’s also got the body and he’s man enough to handle Angelina.

  22. sonola trip says:

The real Cleopatra was very unattractive physically. She was, however, highly intelligent, charismatic, and sexually cunning. It’s really too bad Hollywood keeps perpetuating the lie that Cleopatra’s appeal to powerful men was her physical beauty. It was not. It was her mind, ideas, and personality that made her so irresistible to powerful men. The story of the real Cleopatra offers greater lessons to women (and a far better story as a result), than the Hollywood fabrication which insists on making her physically flawless in order to make her “sexy”.

  23. Lilias says:

Sorry to comment again so soon but I had to add that I agree with other folks: Her accents are HORRENDOUS. Keep that woman away from any movie in which she’s required to do an accent because holy moly. Some actors can do them and some actors can’t. She just can’t. Even her fans cannot say that she’s good at accents.

OOO, and I agree with Mika about Christian Bale. Yummy and can look kinda ancient greek. He’s got an odd but good look about him.

  24. bite me says:

CZJ is too old and her body is not what it used to be

  25. city says:

    OOOOOOO….Gerry for Marc Anthony!

  26. miranda says:

“Monica Bellucci as Cleopatra, now she would be amazing!”

Check out Asterix & Cleopatra. It’s in french with subtitles and gloriously stupid.

If they want to make a massive cartoon blockbuster AJ would be perfect; if they’re going down the historical epic route I’d keep her well clear – every attempt at serious “acting” by AJ results in box office disaster – see boxofficemojodotcom for details.

  27. Tess says:

I don’t know if Cleopatra was unattractive. But the qualities she is remembered for are a charming, lilting voice together with a gift for language, along with a potent sexuality.

Maybe she was a bit like Jackie O. Not conventionally beautiful, but having some powerful combination of qualities that men found intoxicating.

I think AJ could be good if she could work on the voice part.

    And Christian Bale….YES…Fantastic!!!

  28. Miranda Ann says:

Angelina’s name is “attached” to just about every movie project that comes along. What these people are saying (the author and the producer) means nothing. Right now, Angelina appears to be filming only one movie per year. Her next one (the only one signed, sealed and delivered) is that Scarpetti movie that films in 2011. When exactly will this Cleo movie be done?

Also, I don’t think Angelina will want to get involved in any of that “Cleo is black” controversy. Even though historians know for a fact that Cleopatra had ZERO “African” blood in her because she was a direct descendent of one of Alexander’s generals, Ptolemy, there are still people out there who insist she should be played by a Black woman. Who needs that crap? I don’t think this thing will get made at all and if it does get made, Angelina won’t be in it.

  29. bite me says:

lets see oscar, golden globes, and sags, and aj had critical acclaim even with her box office bombs…nominated for everything but the oscar for a mighty heart…nominated for everything with challenging…small role in Alexander but the critics said she was the best part of the movie…and yes i stan for aj, why do u ask 😀

  30. A.K.A says:

    @miranda

I have it on dvd !!! 😀 I saw it a hundred times and still love it!

And that’s why I think Monica can play the same character in a more dramatic and serious way because she’s that kind of actress. 🙂

Plus , her natural accent(be it English or French) is beautiful already 😉

  31. denise says:

Not a good choice. They should use someone is ethnically correct.

  32. Tess says:

    @ AKA

Thanks for the chuckle. Thought you meant Monica Lewinski for a sec.

  33. VV says:

Monica Bellucci was already Cleopatra, very beautiful but it was a comedy I do believe.

James Purefoy (Rome) was a kick ass Antony. I can’t imagine anyone else doing the part justice after watching him. God I miss that series…

    NSFW
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOTCCj-PJ80

  34. juliana says:

I don’t want to see Monica Bellucci in anything after she put in her support of Roman Polanski.

  35. Rachel says:

James Purefoy = Marc Antony. He has the looks and the presence. Mmmm, James Purefoy … *sigh*

  36. lena says:

@ miranda ann….Cleopatra, to my understanding was Macedonian, but her paternal grandmother (assumed to be a mistress, not the wife) MIGHT have been black, possibly making Cleo 1/4 black, of course this is just speculation and we could save the project for halle berry’s daughter

At the end of day does it really matter if she was black or white?…all we do know is she was chubby and not very attractive

  37. A.K.A says:

“…all we do know is she was chubby and not very attractive”

    @ Tess & lena

Then maybe Monica Lewinski IS a good choice !!!

    😀

  38. nana says:

people always complain! no satisfaction! you hand them food, they even want to eat your hands.

Ok since some here wants to insist black to portray the role and really not soo attractive to be Cleo, then how about Gabourey Sidibe??

Mark Anthony as the living Mark Anthony of JLo and Ceasar as Mickey Rourke.

  39. bite me says:

nana stop it, you made me spit out some of my vodka and orange juice

  40. Solveig says:

“Very few modern actresses have the ability to do period drama and actually look authentic or timeless.”
    Absolutely true.
And Angelina is not one of those actresses.
I predict count chocula (cit.) accent, pouty lips, crazy eyes and overacting.
In any case, every single movie adaptation of Cleopatra’s life bombed, even the one with Liz and Richard Burton wasn’t that good.
Ah, Monica Bellucci is stunning but she’s worst than Angelina as an actress, and she already portrayed Cleopatra in that stupid french movie “Asterix and [something]”.

  41. Shi-gatsu says:

No doubt she’s beautiful. But Egyptians were dark-skinned people. Why not let a dark-skinned actress play Cleopatra? Oh, I know why – it’s Hollywood.

  42. Toe says:

    LOL @ Nana

  43. Captaine says:

Hurray!! Yet Another hollywood white washed film. Just waiting for Tom Hanks to take his turn to play Martin Luther King, Jr. next. Awesome!

  44. danielle says:

Huh – I was an AJ fan when she was in Alexander and I still thought she was god awful in it.

  45. Seth says:

I really think that Cleopatra is just… a huge name. It encompasses so many legends and feelings. She’s not just some ancient queen, she’s a representation of (what is perceived to be) a more romantic, dangerous time. I think that Angelina Jolie is probably the only actress today who is… BIG enough to play the role, and not have the role play her, if that makes sense. I think appearance wise, it’s good to go with beauty. I know Cleopatra wasn’t beautiful in real life. But do I want to go see some homely woman play this sexual exotic mastermind? No, I’m sorry, but the story of Marc Antony and Cleopatra is synonymous with tragedy and romance and glamour, whether it be historically accurate or not, I want a goddamn gorgeous Cleopatra. In fact, unless the material is just really, really good and hinges on realism, I never want to see movies with homely people. Generally, movies are about escape. I don’t want to escape into some normal person’s dismal world.

I don’t know about the accent part, maybe she could work on it, but as far as appearance goes, I think Angelina Jolie is perfect for Cleopatra, or the idea of Cleopatra anyway. She is stunning and exotic and even just staring out her window with her children she evokes this majesty and queenly quality that I find pretty breathtaking. I don’t really like Angelina Jolie, I still think she’s kind of a trashy whore for the whole Brad Pitt/Anniston thing, and I rarely care for or even see her movies, but I think she’s a very good choice for Cleopatra.

Or maybe Catherine Zeta-Jones. She’s very exotic and beautiful. Actually, I would say she’s more beautiful than Angelina. Or even Halle Barry.

  46. denise says:

    LOL!!!@ Captaine

  47. Miranda Ann says:

At the end of day does it really matter if she was black or white
    ————————————————————————
It matters a lot to a lot of people. Just read the comments here and other boards. Believe me, it matters and that’s why I doubt Angelina would want to get into this controversy. She doesn’t need the work and, as someone pointed out, those Cleo movies already made were all bombs. I don’t think there’s a lot of interest out there and that’s why the people involved are dropping Angelina’s name. It gets them noticed.

  48. eggy weggs says:

Cleopatra in “Rome” is pretty awesome.

    http://especiales.plus.es/media/PAGINADIGITALPLUS/Especiales/Roma/Personajes/cleopatra.jpg

They should cast Jane Wiedlin. I’ll bet she’s available.

  49. Carmelatta says:

    @Captaine

Freaking hilarious! Robert Pattinson can costar as Malcolm X and Megan Fox can play Rosa Parks, naturally.

The last thing we need is another movie that takes place in ancient Africa with no black people in it.

  50. Wisteria says:

I think she’s an excellent choice for that. She’s gorgeous and very exotic looking.

  51. Blaster says:

I’m not sure how recent the sources are saying that Cleopatra didn’t have any black in her at all, but you’re wrong. They have examined the skull of her sister who she may or may not have had murdered and her skull is very much similar to those of Egyptian decent.

Say what you will about race (that there is no biological link to it, which is true) but the zygomatic bones, supraorbital notches of people from Africa are far more defined/different than those of European descent. Not to mention the arch of the nasal bone.

Yes, Cleopatra and her family were descendants of Ptolemy but it has been shown they WERE part Egyptian. Even if someone was only a fourth black, they would still have overall Ethnic/Black features. I’m just getting tired of Hollywood white-washing everything, as though if it isn’t white, no one will go see it. I got it during Elizabeth Taylor’s time but now, in 2010, we are still doing this?

Trust me, I’m not blaming AJ in any way, this would be a great role for her but I don’t think she is the right choice. And after Alexander…and that “accent”…still gives me chills…And I’m not even going to go near the accent for Beowulf.

Thandie Newton, Joy Bryant…there are no shortage of people who could play her…

  52. Me says:

This makes me gag. She thinks she’s the new Liz Taylor. She probably thought that Brad would be her RIchard Burton.

  53. lama says:

Oh God, please let this happen… I can just see her screaming in the eye make-up wigs and head-dress…

  54. MissyA says:

The problem is Cleopatra is so iconic that she’s become an archetype for alpha-femininity – and it’s because of her intelligence, charisma and prowess that it is inferred that she was beautiful (and extremely temperamental).

Like it or not, Jolie is the modern day answer to the alpha-female archetype. Beautiful, intelligent, controversial. . . It makes perfect sense that she’d be first in line to play Cleopatra.

That said, I’m really excited that Scott Rudin is producing this film. I think it’s going to be an awesome, insightful look into a very complicated woman in a very turbulent time. Do it justice, Rudin!

  55. Carmelatta says:

    @ Miranda Ann

History is always on the move. You’ve got to keep up, so here you go: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/also_in_the_news/7945333.stm

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article5908494.ece

What’s the point of doing a historical drama if you’re going to ignore basic facts? Hollywood manufactures reality for a living. Why chose real life figures and make up stories about them when you can simply carry on with the usual fare? Go ahead and make up a story starring Angelina Jolie. People will see it regardless. Why pervert history?

  56. Deb says:

Shouldn’t she be home taking care of her boatload of kids? She’s missing the most important years of their life. Oh never mind……that’s probably better for them.

  57. lena says:

@ Blaster I definitely get what you are saying, Hollywood always white washes…just look at the big uproar over the Prince of Persia movie and the new movie M Shamalamadingdong is making (avatar or something like that), it’s acutally an insult to people of color and white people. It basically says people of color aren’t good enough to play the part and white are incapable of enjoying a movie where the lead isn’t white.

@ miranda ann, I guess I just don’t see the fuss about the whole black/ white thing because both sides have strong arguments about why she was or why she wasn’t… I honestly think a woman with a mixed heritage would be a more accurate portrayl of Cleopatra, because I don’t think she was 100 %white or all black. Someone mentioned Thandie Newton and I think she would be a realistc pick.

    and LOL @ A.K.A

  58. Bite me says:

Her boatload of kids have a father to take good care of them while their mother works how quaint of you deb

  59. faye says:

The thing is, we know that Cleopatra wasnt much of a beauty.

  60. cprincess says:

Theres only one Cleopatra and Mark Anthony and thats Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton…..

  61. Thandie Newton would be a better choice. Cleopatra was from Africa, she was not a white woman.

  62. Mika says:

Cleopatra was almost 100% Greek. She was the first Ptolomy to even SPEAK Egyptian.

  63. Kim says:

Yeah Deb she films one movie a year and kids visit on set.

  64. Miranda Ann says:

Mika, I know that and you know that but apparently there are a lot of people who don’t want to know that. The Ptolemys not only did not speak the language of their conquered land, they never mingled with the people of Egypt. They married each other (and murdered each other) for centuries, which is why they eventually died out. There is no Egyptian in the blood of the Pharaohs.

And I wish people would stop making it sound like Angelina is pushing this so-called movie forward. I doubt she has anything to do with it, despite what the producer is saying. They are just using her name to get backing. I’m betting this thing will never be made.

And Deb, dear, their mother works about three/four months a year and when she’s working their father is with them. So, no need to worry your small brain about whether or not they are being taken care of. Good of you to care, though.

  65. Kevin says:

How about Naomi Campbell? She actually has the temper that the Pharaoh supposedly possessed, very beautiful and has a natural English accent that the baby hoarder could never duplicate. I know she isn’t an actor, but this movie is going to be shit anyways so WTF? At least let someone else try. We know the husband stealer can’t pull it off.

  66. Erin says:

I don’t really like Angelina Jolie but her playing Cleo would work.

I’ve actually read a few books on this subject and Cleopatra was supposed to be not unattractive but average looking, her hair was supposed to be her crowning glory, and she exuded sexuality…

  67. albeli says:

    Crappy choice.

  68. Kim says:

Hollywood cares about making money not authenicity .Thandi would work if its an independent film but a big budget film needs a big star.I cant rembember the film where Michelle Pfiefer replaced the actress in Frankie and Johnny. Its all about the money

  69. Julbug says:

My new crush…Henry Cavill ( Currently Charles Brandon on The Tudors)would be great as Marc A. He’s the most gorgeous man in the world and currently making a Woodie Allen film. Check him out ladies.

  70. Mistral says:

Cleopatra was completely Greek. She was the last ruler of the house of Ptolemy (Ancient Egypt was ruled by many foreigners in its later years, including Greeks. However, it is incorrect to say that none of the Pharaohs were actual Egyptians, as the early great ones were).

She did, however, speak the native language of the Egyptians (which was not Arabic, as they are recent invaders). She spoke many languages. She was completely immersed in the customs and religion of the people she was ruling. She was no beauty, because her portraits show that she wasn’t. Nothing special in the looks department.

Her biographer, Plutarch, even said that. He said that her charm was in the way she carried herself, and her extreme intelligence. He said anyone who spent time with her or around her couldn’t help but be drawn to her. A woman does not always need looks to be considered sexy. A woman with power, charm, and intelligence can be just as alluring.

One thing that confuses me Kevin: why would Cleopatra need to speak with a British accent??? 🙂

  71. Fae says:

Sod what colour Cleopatra was, my main argument for Angelina not being involved in the film is that she’s a thoroughly unimpressive actress that can’t pull off any accent that isn’t her own.

Take away the facial prolapse and she’s as exotic as a spiral bound notebook.

  72. Nibbi says:

I was thinking that only Monica Bellucci could beat Angelina as a new Cleopatra (cuz also I think that role comes back up every generation or so to crown the “hollywood’s most beautiful” actress and yah, I think either could do it) but then someone above reminded me of the Asterix flick in which Bellucci already played Cleopatra. I say it would be cool to see AJ in the role.
As an aside, Bellucci is still totally gorgeous today but she was downright jaw-dropping in that Asterix flick.

  73. Camille says:

I think she would be perfect casting as Cleo, but yes for all that is good in the world PLEASE DON’T let her do any accents!!!

Oh and YES YES YES to James Purefoy, actually, he should just be cast in more stuff in general. Yummo.

  74. Beth says:

Deb, please explain why Angelina has to give up her career for her kids yet it’s fine for every other actress to continue to work after having kids?

Pro or against, I don’t know why people are so heated about this. I’m really doubting Angelina would do this movie. It seems too expected. I’m also wondering if this would actually get made. There isn’t even a script and it’s the type of movie where the budget could get out of control. Studios may not want to take it on. But then again most epic movies do very well internationally and become profitable. People say Troy was a bomb because it did mediocre sales in USA. But it ended up making almost $500 million total because of the international success. Prince of Persia is getting critiqued as a bomb but is has made over $150 million internationally after just one week.

  75. Solveig says:

If I had the chance to choose the actress who would perfectly play Cleopatra I’d say Caterina Murino.
Most of you don’t know her ’cause she is quite famous even here in Europe, but she was one of the Bond girls in Casino Royale.
    http://www2.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/Casino+Royale+Paris+Premiere+0GoXly9ERZMl.jpg
    http://download.kataweb.it/mediaweb/image/brand_moda/2008/03/18/1205832908064_caterina_murino.jpg
She has unique and exotic features and although she’s italian she seem’s mixed-race…
But probably she would be better as Nefertiti.

  76. Overworked says:

Touche, Bite Me. Why do people think AJ works incessantly, and is never there for her kids? She works for a few months, and stays with them the rest of the year. And Brad stays home while she works, and then she’s home with the kids while he works. Regardless, she’s home with them a heck of a lot more that the rest of us who have to work full-time, year-round, to pay the bills.

  77. D. says:

Great role, but not a great actress. I’m sorry, Angelina is just not that impressive as an actress, and getting an academy award for virtually playing herself just doesn’t cut it.

  78. OverIT says:

I think AJ is a bad choice for this one (love her to death) but it’s just not who I would envision as Cleopatra! I was thinking Maya Rudolph, Rashida Jones, Thandie Newton, Jada Pinkett, Catherine Zeta Jones, Jennifer Connelly, etc

It would be very risky for her to do this movie. The hype and the expectations would be so high I can’t see how the movie could live up to it.
If she does do it and blows it out of the water it could be a defining moment in her career.

Purefoy will always be Marc Antony to me. He was perfectly cast in Rome. Hollywood would never cast him because they never make daring and/or interesting casting choices.

she actually looks kinda like queen nefertiti to me

I learnt in Ancient History class back in high school that Cleopatra actually had greek blood in her and probably wasn’t pretty at all. I also remember learning that she had a hook nose, pale skin and red curly hair. I’m not kidding or making a joke I remember learning this.

But for the Hollywood glamourized version, I’m surprised no one said Catherine Zeta Jones. When the Soderbergh project was announced I was SO EFFING excited. CATH Z JONES AND HUGH JACKMAN? PERFECT!!!!! Too bad it fell apart but I wouldn’t mind seeing the two of them in this adaption. I’m kinda sick of always seeing Angelina Jolie as the exotic female character when there are many other actresses who could be perfect for that role.

Eh. I would be much more interested in seeing Cleopatra played by an actress who is more like the historical figure, i.e. not white, and with personal magnetism and charm that isn’t strictly based on physical beauty. I think a large part of Angelina Jolie’s on-screen charm is her incredible physical beauty, and I think it overshadows her other qualities to the point where you don’t see them on film.

Hey Mistral! I said that because that’s the only accent the UN ambassador can do, even a little bit. Figured Naomi already had it down.

Sounds like a bad movie already. Avoid it at all costs…..

It is a bad book to begin with anyway.

    “when she (SPOILER) killed herself”
    😛 !! 😛 !! jaja

I just think that with such a gorgeous classic by elisabeth taylor, this one is going to suck just as hard as pitt’s “troy” or jolie’s “alexader”
