Robert Pattinson: “If too many good things happen, then you’re going to die at 30”

Robert Pattinson continues work on Water For Elephants in Ventura County, CA on June 3, 2010. Fame Pictures, Inc

Robert Pattinson has a new interview on Nightline! God knows when this thing airs, but Nightline has already released transcripts and video (here for Nightline’s full piece). Pattinson is charming, as always, but you know I do adore my Sparkles. Anyway, there’s nothing incredibly new in this interview, just Sparkles joking about his life as a teen idol, and talking about how Edward wants a ring on his finger before he puts out for Bella. That part is kind of funny. Oh, and he thinks he’s going to die at 30, because “I just thought if too many good things happen, then you’re going to die at 30.” Aw…

On being an actor: “I mean, it’s crazy. It’s not what people tell you when people warn you of being an actor,” he said recently in an interview with “Nightline.” “If and when I have children, [and] they ask if they want to be actors, I’m like ‘Yeah, it’s great. You don’t have to do anything. Everything goes right.'”

On Eclipse: “There are a lot of fight scenes, and the love triangle between me, Bella — Kristen’s character — and Jacob kind of comes to a head.”

On “probably” dying at 30: “I guess I just thought if too many good things happen, then you’re going to die at 30… I didn’t want that to happen.” And yet the good things continue to keep happening. “Yeah, so probably, I’m going to die at 30,” he said. “Actually, it’s God saying, ‘Hey, you shouldn’t have asked for too much.'”

On the characters‘ virginity: “If there was a hard and fast decision by both of them saying, ‘Yeah, we’re going to remain virgins our entire lives, it’s never going to happen,’ I don’t think it would be as popular a series,” Pattinson said. He added that the success of the “Twilight” series seemed to lie in its ability to be sexy, without being all about sex. “[Fans] like that moment before … the kind of tipping point before it goes over,” he said. “I mean, everybody likes that. That’s the best part, for a relationship.”

He joked that it was helpful to look as if he was enjoying himself, “rather than looking like it’s freaking you out and you want to leave.”

On Valium: “I knew it was going be a long audition because I was doing a screen test for it, and it was at the director’s house,” he recalled. “And 20 minutes before I had to leave, I just suddenly started panicking.” Desperate, he swiped a few Valium from the friend with whom he’d been staying, and it did the trick. “Um, probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” he joked. “I remember thinking that even when I was in the cab on the way over there, I was thinking, ‘I want to get a prescription for these.'”

On paranoia: “I used to spend a lot of time walking in cities by myself, and I can’t really do that without being, um, a little paranoid,” he says. “You get better at hiding and you get better at choosing which areas are the right areas to go to. And you also get better at interacting with strangers.”

[From ABC News]

I get a kick at how casually he talks about talking Valium. I think he’s also talked about taking sleeping pills – he’s definitely a fan of being medicated. Sparkle Pills. As far as “interacting with strangers” he’s definitely comfortable with that, considering Oprah made him visit some Twihards in their own homes. He behaved with a lot of humor and grace, I thought. I also think that’s what these Twihards need, really – I mean, what’s the worst that could happen when a Twihard meets Sparkles? Granted, there are some truly terrible things that could happen, but the girl most likely just wants a hug.

To be so loved, idolized and lusted after, this young man seems to be well grounded and hasn’t let it go to his head. I hope it stays that way. He is very refreshing.

  2. a says:

    Sparkle Pills!

  3. Sarah says:

I never realized how thin he is until I saw this video. He cute and seems like he is most def making the best of the situation.

  4. missmilly says:

I love you for this article Kaiser.

  5. Feebee says:

Good to see he has a sense of humour about Valium.

  6. This dude looks like a straight up muppet with his hair cut. A cute muppet, but a muppet!

  7. denise says:

I”m no Twi-looney, but Rob has a sexy mouth.

  8. Angel says:

LOL, So Kristen Stewart hits a bowl and she’s scum of the earth constantly stupor-ed typical pothead trash who ‘needs to stop hitting the ‘hookah before every event’.

Robert Pattinson takes Valium, casually, before an audition and it’s adorable that he clearly likes to be “medicated”. What a kicker! Thank goodness he has a sense of humor about abusing prescription pills! Come ON.

How typical. You guys are literally hilarious.

imo, they are both only human and neither is a big deal. Just … the difference in judgment is glaring.

    Oh. Also. Sparkle pills. hahahah.

  9. serena says:

In some weird way, he’s cute.

  10. Ally says:

Oh really, so the only way to defend that ignorant bitch Stewart is calling Pattinson a drug addict for taking a Valium. How many take a Valium as opposed to consuming an illegal substance like she does?

  11. RHONYC says:

uh…so according to him, beyoncé’s time might be up?

    *gulp*

  12. Angel says:

Ally, are you even serious? I can’t tell. Because while you seem serious, what you just said is ridiculous.

    A) Valium is not a prescription drug if it is not prescribed to you. It is an illegal substance. Just like Marijuana.

    B) I was not defending Kristen Stewart. However, since you brought it up, how many people do you think smoke Marijuana exactly? Compared to taking Valium illegally? And why, exactly, is one any worse than the other? And who ever called Pattinson a drug addict? And … a million other questions. But that’s a good start.

My point was that when Kristen smoked pot everyone went insane and basically called her a junky, and still do. When Robert Pattinson admits to taking Valium, it is apparently endearing. You don’t see why that is funny? Not because either of them are awful or amazing, but because people are so quick to defend him and crucify her. For basically the same damn thing.

Furthermore, if Kristen Stewart said in an interview that she took a friends Valium before auditioning for a part, something tells me the response would be the complete opposite of ‘at least she has a sense of humour about Valium’. If you don’t agree, you are lying to yourself.

I won’t even go into the fact that in my personal opinion, these two have remarkably similar personalities, and say as much them selves all the time. The self-deprecating humour, similar mannerisms, the same ironic way of looking at things, the same awkward acceptance of this crazy level of fame. Yet People flame Kristen for everything she says and does. They intensely hate about her what they find caustically witty, endearing, charming about him. Because she is a woman. Especially other women. And they gush over Robert Pattinson because he is male. Especially women. It’s just … obvious.

Example: Robert once called fans throwing them selves at him repulsive, and the gals were out in spades, saying they understand how he feels. Kristen bitches about the paparazzi and gets called snotty and ungrateful. And it comes down to cattiness and petty jealousy, versus being attracted to a successful handsome man. It’s glaring, to me. Deny it all you want, doesn’t make a difference to me. I find it hilarious, and think it says a lot of interesting things about our society. And any attempt to justify it … more-so. 😀

  13. Ally says:

Pattinson should be offended to have his personality being called similar to that of a vulgar and ignorant Hollywood brat.
You can defend her idiotic actions like smoking pot on the stairs in the middle of day when her film was just released or when she compares herself to rape-victims and waits an entire week to let her PR team release a statement where she doesn’t apologize but indirectly says that some “missunderstood” her comment.

Come with a better tactic to excuse her behaviour than using Pattinson and that PR stunt called relationship their studio is selling to naive Twihards when you call us unfair.

  14. Vee says:

Kaiser – thanks for the Rob/Sparkles love! A few things…..Rob is not only a teen idol, that is Taylor Lautner. Rob’s fan base spans many generations of women and men.
Rob is not going to be defined by the Twilight movies. If you’ve not seen Remember Me or Little Ashes, see them. This guy can act!
Also, whatever is going on with Rob and Kristen, it is not a PR stunt. I don’t believe Rob would participate in that. He doesn’t need to. These are his words from the interview.

Chris Connelly (ABC) – Everybody speculates about it, but you don’t talk about your personal life, why is that the right decision?

Robert Pattinson – I don’t know what benefit there would be to talking about it. I mean, in logical terms, if you are just walking down the street and every single stranger on the street knew your business and came up and felt they needed to comment on it, you’d just be like, SHUT UP! I’m going to kill you. (laughs) I mean its exactly the same mentality. I don’t really want to try and sell it either. Maybe if I was selling it, I’d talk about it more.

Rob is just doing his jobs, working hard, being charming in interviews and feeling very lucky and blessed with his situation. He’s a grateful guy and I’m a huge (sane) fan.
And Kaiser, if you’ve not noticed yet, there is much drama among fans on his dating Kristen or not, it’s pretty ugly.

  15. Merny says:

    @Angel
I think your comment was spot on. They malign her so much. Call her a terrible actress when really she is playing the part exactly how she is in the books. Awkward, unsure of herself and self concious.

    @Ally
She said seeing pictures of herself doing personal things was like being raped. A bad choice of words, she admitted, but an intrusion on her personal life nonetheless. If every stupid thing you or I said at 18 was recorded for posterity….

  16. Whoa, Ally, calm down. If you need it you can get a Valium from RPatz. 🙂 Angel, I feel it and I agree, BUT I think for me it’s KStew’s facial expressions. It took me a while it figure out why she doesn’t bother me on paper but in televised interview or appearances I find her nerve grating, I don’t thinks he does it on purpose. While she says something she has this strange ‘bad smell’ face on, when he says almost the same thing he has a higher energy and a smile.

  17. lio says:

@Angel: i’m with you. The double standard also bothers me very much.

  18. Pat says:

Angel, you keep saying that you find things “hilarious”, but you just sound… angry to me.

As for your point: yes, there’s the fact that Kristen is a woman, clearly. But also, there is the BASIC point that she just doesn’t come across as being as likeable as Rob. He’s a natural charmer, so naturally, everyone (women and men, too) give him more slack. Not fair either, I’ll grant you.

  19. Vee says:

@Pat – great point. There is a double standard, true, but Rob is charming, whereas Kristen often comes off as awkward bordering on surly. Baiting the pappz and giving them the finger does not help. To her credit, she’s was fantastic at the MTV Awards and the latest Eclipse promo, I hope she keeps it up.

  20. joanie says:

Angel – you hit the nail on the head. Kristen is crucified ONLY by jealous girls who want to be “Bella”. I don’t understand the opinions that she is ignorant or stupid? I think she is very nervous doing interviews but I think she is very intelligent and the best young actress to come along since Jodie Foster. I am not a Twilight fan, but I have enjoyed Kristen’s performances in other movies such as Into the Wild, Speak, The Runaways and she even managed to upstage the great Jodie Foster in Panic Room.
Ladies, quit hating on Kristen – jealousy is an ugly emotion.

  21. rawkaz says:

Angel, well put. You are spot on and refreshing.

  22. mollination says:

Yeah, I must say -this kid is pretty great. He seems like the kind of celebrity I actually would want to be friends with in real life; something refreshingly aware about him.

But if I was friends with him I’d probably drink some liquid courage and try to dry hump him during the middle of a casual house party/gathering.

  23. chris says:

Kristen’s crazy fangirls needs to stop showing up in Rob’s comments trying to justify all her bad behavior by comparing it to Rob. Not the same people, not the same situations, not the same thing. Get a clue and some context people and stop being ridiculous. Rob can’t make Kristen look good. Only Kristen can make Kristen look good. She’s been doing a pretty good job lately. Her crazy fans are the ones doing the bad job.

  24. chris says:

Oops, also Rob is awesome and was really great in this interview. He’s really been on fire for this promotion and I love him for it.

  25. Liana says:

“If and when I have children, [and] they ask if they want to be actors, I’m like ‘Yeah, it’s great. You don’t have to do anything. Everything goes right.’”
    _____

Except for when it all goes horribly wrong.

Really? People called Kristin Stewart a junkie for smoking out? Her affinity for the ganja is one of the few things I LIKE about her!

  26. Vee says:

Saw Rob on Leno last night, man, he has more charm than most in Hollywood today! This guy is incredible thanks to his Mum and Dad, aw!

  27. Angel says:

    @pat

Well. I think you are confusing passionate for angry. I was touching on a woman’s issue, and about that I am, admittedly, passionate. But nowhere was I angry. This makes me think of tone-argument, actually, but I won’t even get into that because it is far beyond the scope of this discussion–and, where I am willing to take it.

I do find it hilarious, though. In a sad sort of way. There’s a bit of cognitive dissonance for you. 😀

  28. Rose Miller says:

Good grief people….get a grip. With so many terrible drug addicts in Hollywood, Rob and Kristen are lightweights compared to them. And with all the critical problems in the world, you guys discuss this situation like it’s the most important thing in the world. LIGHTEN UP. Who cares??
