John Goodman tells Letterman he used to weigh 400 pounds

Comedian John Goodman was on Letterman last night to promote his series on HBO, Treme. I remember seeing him on Letterman last year in May when he mentioned that he had quit drinking and he was so much bigger back then! As Kaiser noted last week, Goodman has lost a noticeable amount of weight and he looks great. He explained to Letterman that his weight yo-yoed so frequently that he would routinely drop 60 pounds in the spring and then gain it back plus more every year when he was working on the Roseanne show! (From 1998 – 2000) He said it was all due to “barleycorn” aka drinking, which he’s thankfully since stopped. Goodman looked pretty dapper and I love his dry sense of humor.

John Goodman looked great on Letterman Wednesday night, and Dave brought up his obvious weight loss, saying, “You look wonderful!”

Asked what his all-time weight high was, Goodman said “Plenty… pushing 400.. Somewhere up around there.”

He also elaborated on his previous cycle of losing and gaining weight year after year after year.

“I’d get off of ‘Roseanne’ every spring. I’d lose 60 lbs every spring. Then I got too fond of the barley corn… I’d gain it back and then some, every year.”

And while he didn’t specify what he did this time to take the weight off, Goodman says he hopes to lose more. “[I’m] getting a lot of exercise, I feel great.. It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.”

[From Huffington Post]

After John joked that he wanted to look like Paris Hilton (that’s where the clip ends above) they got serious for a moment and Letterman said that now that Goodman has quit drinking it may be “the answer to your [weight] problems.” Goodman said “that’s the answer to a lot of problems. I had it pretty hard for 30 years. It was a lot of residual damage. Just trying to pick up the pieces now.”

Goodman explained that he goes to the gym five days a week and does boxing with a trainer two of those days. “I don’t hit anybody,” he said “It just gets your heart rate right up.”

Goodman said he lives in New Orleans, where he’s been since 1997. He claimed he made the decision after he woke up at Mardi Gras “knee deep in broken glass and suspicious liquids, [and] said ‘this is the place for me.'” His show on HBO, Treme, is set in the city six months after Katrina. “It’s great for the city. It’s pretty accurate. It’s great for the musicians.”

Here’s a trailer for Treme, which does contain F bombs so it’s NSFW. It looks so good and I’m going to see if I can watch this season now! The series has its finale this weekend, June 20, and will be returning for a second season next year.

John Goodman is the best! So glad to see he’s lost weight and developing healthier habits – I’m a big fan, and loved this clip with Letterman!

  2. Lady LaLa says:

    Love me some John Goodman

  3. jc126 says:

I love JG. I think he had gastric bypass, given the rapid weight loss. I hope he stays healthy for a long time.

  4. Lem says:

way more than 400. but whatever. LOVE HIM. glad he’s getting healthier so we get more of him 🙂

  5. lucy2 says:

I’d have guessed he was more than 400 too, esp. since he’s so tall. Either way, congrats to him for losing weight, he looks great and it sounds like he’s doing very well.
I know someone who a while ago quit drinking beer and started walking, and they dropped weight really fast too. I think starting to exercise and suddenly being conscious of what you’re putting in your body makes a big difference.

I didn’t know he was a N.O. resident. That’s great they’re filming the show there and everything, I will definitely be checking it out ASAP. Maybe tonight on demand.

  6. Praise St. Angie! says:

yeah, but did he say anything about Creighton Barnette getting killed off?

    is he dead or not?!

  7. Victoria says:

I like this guy, I always have. HE was the only reason I watched Roseann. Im so happy he’s gotten healthy. He was overweight and I felt like he was a heart attack watiting to happen. So what’s the expression? “Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker!” I ditched alcohol and lost a lot of weight.

  8. bellaluna says:

I have adored him for so long. He’s just so good in everything he does. And Treme is an awesome show. I love his character on Treme, too.

As someone whose weight has fluctuated over the years, I understand his struggle. I’m back down to a weight with which I’m finally comfortable (15 lbs less than when I got pregnant!), so I know how he feels.

  9. guilty pleasures says:

Wow, I only heard of Treme a couple of weeks ago, on this site I think. This is the first trailer I’ve seen and I am going to seek it out now. It has some of my favourite actors in it, and seems to be a passionate story line.
    What does ‘Treme’ mean?
    Good for you Mr Goodman!

  10. Meimei says:

Well, when seriously overweight people start losing weight, the first kilos drop off quite fast – that’s water weight for ya. Of course, after that it’s the same as for anyone trying to lose some.

And yeah, he does look good.

  11. buckley says:

    I quite like Treme.

  12. fugly says:

good for him. he looks fantastic.

  13. denise says:

John seems like a cool guy.

  14. Eden says:

I wanted to like Treme so much but I watched the first 6 episodes and quit. It felt like a chore to watch every week.
I do love the music and way they incorporate real musicians into the show and I added a lot of great music that I discovered from watching the show into my i-tunes but I found that I didn’t care week to week to see what was going on with the characters. Something for me is missing with that show and I don’t know what it is. The character development and storylines don’t engage me enough to care.
People seem to love it so maybe I’m missing something.
John Goodmans character on the show does seem very authentic and learning that he lives there explains it!
Glad he stopped the boozing and is getting healthy.

  15. Praise St. Angie! says:

    to guilty pleasures…

The Treme is a section (neighborhood?) of New Orleans known for it’s musical roots and history.

  16. Sarah says:

He looks great. I love him, always have.

  17. Will says:

Jeez, 400 pounds?!? Goodman is only slightly shorter than me and I feel pretty fat at around 250 (my all-time high was 262). I’m sure he must feel a lot better now that he’s lost weight…less back trouble, less sweating, etc.

He’s a really talented guy…I find it interesting that I have heard more than one woman talk about how attractive they find him, though these are usually the small minority who find “big guys” hot.

Hope the weight loss means many more years of entertainment…I hear Treme is a really good show.

  18. omondieu says:

Good for him! I’ve always liked John.

This is the first I’m hearing of Treme. Looks like I have another show to check out!

  19. Jeri says:

Wow! Good for him, I haven’t watched his show yet but have always been a fan of his.

  20. meme says:

i wish i had me a dan connor:-(

  21. padiddle says:

@Eden – I felt the exact same way! I loved The Wire, and thought it would be amazing too, since it was done by the same people, but I just thought it was awful, and I really didn’t care what happened to any of the characters. Actually, most of them seemed totally self absorbed and horrible to me.

  22. Darlene says:

He looks awesome. I love him. Last year I was so afraid he was going to go the way of so many heavy men before him. Way to turn it around, John!! Keep up the good work!

  23. Bodhi says:

Gawd, I LOVE Treme!! I can’t believe the season is already almost over! I really hope next year’s is longer.

I really hope they didn’t kill off Creighton. He makes me crazy, but I love him all the same

  24. buckley says:

    @Bodhi
I think Creighton is gone, in my opinion.
His character did get annoying at some point for me. Such a talker, not a doer.
That said, totally love the show.

  25. Eden says:

@Padiddle- It looks like it’s just you and me!! 🙂
I too loved the Wire and I generally love all the HBO and Showtime and Starz series so it’s been so confusing for me not to be into it at all.
I agree with everything you said..thanks for the validation!

  26. Praise St. Angie! says:

buckley, I thought so too, but Goodman is listed (on IMDB) as appearing in the next season.

so…flashbacks? or did he just go off to “find himself” and will be back next season?

Initially, I thought for sure he killed himself. throughout the episode, he seemed to be..I don’t how to put it… “tying up loose ends”?…telling his daughter how pretty she looked, giving the street musicians a $20 bill, having a smoke after having had quit for so long, etc…it was like he was doing all these thing so he wouldn’t regret NOT having done them before he died.

but then I flashed back to his class where he was talking about the character who never (and I may get this terminology wrong) “found herself” until she distanced herself from what she loved. or something like that. then I thought, “oh, he didn’t jump OFF the boat, he RODE the boat somewhere to go on “walkabout”.”

but maybe I’m just being hopeful?…

I guess (HOPE!) we find out next week!

  27. Nataloo says:

He looks fantastic! I love John Goodman, and he deserves health & happiness.

  28. padiddle says:

Eden – no, Thank you! I was starting to think I was crazy or alone in thinking this. I’m glad someone else feels the same way.
And I generally tend to like most of the premium shows too.

  29. Ashbery says:

Oh John Goodman I just wanna give you a big ol hug.

  30. Mrs Malajian says:

Love that Big or Little John G!!! He is the best! Let’s see lots more of him on film, acting is good for his health. He still has many great career years ahead of him. God Bless John G!

  31. ChocolateHonee says:

Treme is the oldest Black Neighborhood in the US. Birthplace of Louis Armstrong and Trombone Shorty. Kermit Ruffins lives there now and BigSam of Big Sam Funky Nation plays there too! It’s a must see if you Love Music like Me! Peace Love Jazz

  32. Bodhi says:

    @ Praise – Thats what I’m hoping too… :pleaseohplease:

As an aside, I LOATHE The Awakening (the book he was teaching about in class). Blech.

  33. katie says:

he seems like such a nice, down to earth guy. i really like him and he looks great! he looks younger too. loved him on roseanne and i still watch the reruns every night on the TV land channel!

  34. Megan says:

I love this man! I really do. His characters are fantastic: He made me laugh countless times as Dan Connor, and as Walter from Big Lebowski, and brought me to tears in his current role in Treme. We love you, John!

  35. i’m watching roseanne as we speak. i love you john goodman! so glad you’re getting healthier.

  36. Well it seems like lovable little Johnny is just about to have his very own sex scandal. You people have no idea about who this guy truly is.
