Knight & Day comes in third & tanks at the box office

knight1

As expected, Knight & Day did poorly at the box office this weekend, coming in third to Toy Story 3 in its second week and the Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups. As Kaiser reported Friday, Knight & Day cost a whopping $115 million to make and tens of millions to promote. It took in only $20.5 million over the weekend, which may signal the death knell for Cruise’s action hero career. Cruise has Mission Impossible IV in pre-production, and now that it’s known that he can’t single-handedly carry a film the studio may reduce his role and focus the story on a younger agent. They are also expected to reduce the budget for MI IV.

I like this analysis of the numbers from Box Office Mojo, which points out that unclear marketing along with a focus on Cruise as an unhinged character may have sunk this film. It’s too bad, because Cruise’s performance is earning praise and the movie is said to be decent and entertaining.

Knight & Day enlisted an estimated $20.5 million on around 4,100 screens at 3,098 locations, bringing its five-day haul to $27.8 million. Attendance was below average for a spy movie, and it was Tom Cruise’s lowest in a leading role since Far and Away in 1992 (which had nearly as many viewers from about half the theaters). Mr. Cruise’s last summer action spectacle, Mission: Impossible III, was deemed somewhat of a disappointment, but it still debuted to $47.7 million. Co-star Cameron Diaz has never been as consistent a performer as Cruise, and Knight & Day is a reunion of the two actors: Diaz had a supporting role in Cruise’s Vanilla Sky, which started at $25 million (or the equivalent of over $35 million adjusted for ticket price inflation). Distributor 20th Century Fox’s research showed that Knight & Day’s audience had an even split between genders and that 56 percent was over 25 years old.

Outside of the Mission: Impossible movies, Tom Cruise’s pictures generally aren’t prone to record-breaking launches, and they often enjoy relatively long runs, but, even under the rosiest of circumstances moving forward, Knight & Day is unlikely to reach the $100 million mark that used to be the norm for Mr. Cruise. While Cruise reprised the running man routine that has served him well in the past, Knight & Day was the dramatic star’s first at-bat in the action-comedy genre.

Unfortunately, the movie’s marketers didn’t get the memo: instead of a summer romp, Knight & Day was presented as if it had a similar premise to Collateral, only more brightly lit and with more quips, and the drama was punctuated by the Muse song “Uprising” (also just used to push the V television series). The ads weren’t clear about the movie’s story or tone, leaving only the action spectacle and star power to carry the day. In this context, though, Cruise seemed unhinged (Diaz being the audience surrogate), making the movie an out-of-form self-referential nod to Cruise’s oft-criticized off-screen behavior of recent years. Sensing things weren’t working, the ad campaign shifted gears at the last minute, cutting the Muse song but offering only more generics.

[From Box Office Mojo]

Maybe it was too soon to riff on crazy-making Cruise, or maybe people are just sick of him. This film looks fun to me, but it’s not like I am going to rush out and see it. I don’t blame Cruise as much as the way the story was sold to us, which was somewhat confusing and unappealing as the article mentioned. Still, we’re not forgetting the couch-jumping incident and we don’t love Cruise as the wild-eyed cult devotee he revealed himself as five years ago. Are there any movie stars left who can carry a film, or are we just too accustomed to entertainment that meets our every whim on demand? There’s always Cruise’s buddy Will Smith, whose public persona has never managed to overshadow the characters he plays.

*Note by Kaiser: I just wanted to mention that Knight & Day couldn’t even make the lower-end estimates of $25 million that industry insiders were hoping for. That’s really bad!

hmm, theres plenty of movie stars left, however the studios just keep making the same stupid movie, over and over again… yes will smith is likeable, but he also had his shared of bombs. Johnny depp is pretty hot right now as well as leo D.

question is, is being a movie star a predictor of box office reliability.

  2. scotchy says:

i think it will do alright, internationally, but yeah those domestic numbers are not good, oh well….

  3. N.D. says:

I don’t know, I just didn’t like the trailer. All the old and tired tricks in storytelling, in camera work, in editing, well, in pretty much everything. Something you may look at only when really bored and when it’s free like on TV.

  4. Marjalane says:

When we were leaving Toy Story, I asked some guy and his date how K&D was and they both just said, “stupid”. No interest in rewarding Tom Cruise for being a master PR manipulator.

  5. Granger says:

I haven’t seen the film, but here in Canada, a reviewer in one of our national papers noted that it is filled with suggestions of abduction and date-drugging, with Diaz’s character getting all googly-eyed over a man who basically kidnaps her and knocks her out everytime he needs to escape a situation. Yeah, that sounds like a winner to me. I’ll feel so sorry for Cruise if it ruins his leading-man career.

  6. snowball says:

I totally blame Diaz. She creeps me out and I won’t go see anything she’s in. At least Cruise is sort of interesting in action stuff lately. Mission Impossible wasn’t all that bad.

  7. Brittney says:

This man won’t get his fans back until he leaves that “church”… too bad it also serves as his PR team.

  8. rraven says:

I think it might still do well internationally, so they may just recoup production costs, my guess is it takes more than a movie star these days for a movie to do well.

  9. tooey says:

I agree w/ bite me: I think it’s the same stupid movie we’ve seen so many times before. It costs a lot to go to the movies so why see something that you’ve seen done over and over again? I think that’s why the season is so sluggish overall: stale ideas and remakes all over the place. I bet K&D does well on DVD. I’m looking forward to Inception – it at leasts looks like a new idea!

  10. Kate says:

I just love his guy’s talent and I see almost everything he is in. Although Diaz is not a pretty girl to say the least …her movies I do avoid for her total lack of talent and her face freaks me out! As far as people “not seeing his movies until he leaves that church” is so IGNORANT! It is none of my business what someones personal life, political life and/or religious life involves. I wouldn’t go throwing stones unless I expect the mob to turn it’s attention on me.

  11. Wench. says:

Is this poster not screaming GAY to anyone else?

  12. serena says:

It’s really a pity, I hope this doesn’t affect him too much.
He’s really hot in the last photo.

  13. meme says:

cruise is done and cameron diaz sucks.

  14. Riley says:

I am not a fan of Tom Cruise and never really have been. I was a little too young when Top Gun came out to think of Tom Cruise as a sex symbol, and even as I have gotten older, I have always found him rather boring in looks and personality— even when he went nuts on Oprah’s couch. That said, I wonder if the tanking of Knight & Day says as much about the downturn of Cameron Diaz career as Tom Cruise’s? Would the movie have done better with say, Angelina Jolie in the female lead? Keira Knightly, perhaps? It is hard to speculate, but Tom Cruise’s career has been failing ever since The Last Samurai, maybe even before. Cameron, with the Shrek movies, the Charlie’s Angle’s movies, the cookey Ben Stiller movies, has been box office gold for a better part of the last 12 years. How will this movie impact her future career? Will her only choices of roles now be between the disgruntled, jealous mother or the disgruntled jealous wife/girlfriend? Will she career go the way of Meg Ryan, Uma Thurman or is it still salvageable for her?

  15. amanda says:

If I’m going to let my bf drag me to an action, it better be one with a buff and/or sexy leading man… Jason Statham, for example.
I can no longer see Tom Cruise as anything but a crazy couch jumping cult adherent. Totally ruins the fantasy.

  16. Hautie says:

I agree that the public can not look past his church/cult. His erratic behavior in the past still haunts him to this day.

From the attack on Matt Lauer (the glib thing) to all the weird PDA stuff with Katie, he just comes off as odd. And not in a endearing way.

So unfortunately, till he decides to sit down with Barbara Walters and cry for the camera… he is not getting out from under the cloud of crazy that hovers over him.

  17. a says:

interested in @granger’s comment above, i looked up the article, which is interesting:

  18. poopie says:

i am SOOOOOOOOOO glad it tanked !now climb down off that rusty high horse called XENU and go AWAY !!

  19. Iggles says:

amanda – I agree. Tom Cruise is not hot to me anymore. Well, he was never really “hot” to me, more adorable/cute. For example, I LOVE “Far and Away”. It’s my favorite Cruise film 😀

As an action star, eh. Now he comes off as an irritable, older man with a Napoleon complex. Not interested. Also I can’t stand Cameron Diaz either. She plays the same character in every film and she pulls it off less and less with age.

I think both are at the age where they need to ACT. Being one-note characters is implausible to the audience and just annoying to watch.

BTW, the poster looks horrible. Super CHEESY and awful PHOTOSHOP. Also, it does nothing to show you what the movie is about. So generic..

  20. Bobby the K says:

He’s also woefully overexposed. Too much of him all the time, and he’s not the only one. When these people do have something to promote, it’s not all that interesting or special to see them. It’s just a continuation of their p.r. hack’s agenda.

  21. Feebee says:

Tom Cruise’s movie tanks! A nice way to start the day 🙂

The movie looked same-old and the marketing was disjointed and smelled desperate, especially on the morning shows. An “exclusive” live on-set stunt was hyped on GMA as some amazing sight not to be missed. It was a huge “was that it?” moment. Just like Cruise’s career is becoming.

There’s no way he’s going to be able to deliver his les or len whatshisface movie. Studios need to walk away unless they want to lose another $100 million on his guy.

  22. ann carter says:

We saw it and loved it. Really fun, never dragged, lots of twists. I wish him only the best.

  23. Bee says:

Wow. It’s amazing how one really bad press tour destroyed Tom Cruise’s career. Tom had always been a little weird, but his managers/PR people were able to keep most of his odd behavior under wraps from the majority of the public for years.

What they presented to the public was the idea of the eternally affable everyman action hero. With his big smile, and seemingly never ending laugh/cackle, Tom Cruise appeared to be the man next door. Someone who didn’t mind helping old ladies cross the street and blowing up buildings if he needed to as well.

But, after hiring his sister as his publicist the REAL Tom Cruise (fanatical, bizarre, creepy, egotistical), and crazier than a gummy bear chomping Kelly Bensimon, emerged. For the first time the public saw the man behind the mask. And there’s nothing he can do to put the “couch jumping, Matt Lauer attacking, Brook Shields hating, Katie Holmes abducting” genie back in the bottle.

  24. Jess says:

Happened to catch it on Saturday night in a packed theater. There were parts that made me laugh so hard I cried. I was expecting total crap though so it totally exceeded my expectations. It’s a definite rental if you cannot catch it in the theaters.

  25. rerun delaney says:

you know, it was actually entertaining, and cruise was not as robotic as he’s been in recent movies. he dumped a lot of that snarky charm for something that felt more subtle and winning. cruise as a bad guy is a hard sell-they held out as long as they could on that though. i’m surprised it did so poorly. well, we all have our troubles and challenges.

  26. bellaluna says:

@ amanda – YES! Jason Statham is the hotness! The only movies of his I HAVEN’T been able to watch have been the “Crank” ones because they’re more cartoon than movie. Too bad, though, because he has an amazing body and looks like a real man, not a teenage boy!

  27. tar says:

Cruise needs to accept the fact that the only thing remotely relevant about him is his Les Grossman personna.
If he wants to revive his career, he needs to stick to character roles like Valkyrie, Collateral or Magnolia; and give up this leading man, romantic/action hero shtick, because, bitch, please.

  28. viper says:

    ZENU STRIKES AGAIN

  29. Deniz says:

The movie looks pretty entertaining to me, but their pairing ruins it. Diaz and Cruise don’t match at all.

  30. Sumodo1 says:

This movie was made for foreign box office figures. They knew this going in. It will be HUGE outside the US.

Cruise had better re-tool his pr machine. He’s unacceptable as a “Cary Grant in ‘Charade'” role.

Cameron Diaz, not acceptable as “Audrey Hepburn in ‘Charade'” is no longer bankable as a “babe.” She needs to follow a different path, too, like indie movies.

Again, this movie will make bank in foreign markets.

  31. The Bobster says:

Bad timing for the release, although next week would’ve been ever worse.

  32. Vee says:

Bee – that was brilliant. I agree! LOL!

  33. Ruffian9 says:

    Hahahahahahahahaha

  34. Ruffian9 says:

    Kate: Ignorant?

I can chose to not see a movie/buy a book/download a CD for any damn reason I please. That includes the ‘religious’ affiliations, criminal records, or generaly douscheness of the star/artist. Choosing not to support someone’s work because of my own values and sensitivies is not ignorant. It’s exercising my right to make a choice.

  35. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Coming in the top three isn’t really tanking to me, Joanh Hex TANKED. That movie really flopped hard but coming in top 3 isn’t bad. I expected it to fall really hard but it Just proves Tom has still got it.

  36. MaiGirl says:

Wow. I thought that playing on his crazy image was a brilliant move, but I agree that the marketing was an epic fail. Good movies can be sunk by ill-conceived marketing. If anything could resuscitate Cruise’s action movie career, this goofy choice should have. I also agree that Cameron Diaz was the wrong choice as a co-star, since her career is also in freefall. She’s one of those actresses who has done so little of note lately that we begin to forget why she was famous in the first place. I will see it on DVD, though. It looks fun.

  37. CB Rawks says:

Best movie he was ever in was The Firm, but that was just luck on his part. They could have given anyone that role and it would have been an exciting film.

  38. Vibius says:

I cant stand this guy, but MI III was an amazing movie. II and III were great. I haven’t been able to watch any of his movies since the couch and attack on medication. The cutting back on IV sucks. Its the one thing that could get me to break my $ci. boycott for at least the 1 movie.

Plus isn’t Cameron Diaz kinda of a movie killer too? She is really hard to watch.

  39. Bee says:

@Voe, thanks! No one brings the crazy like La Cruise. I’d pay money to see Tom and Kelly KILOREN Bensimon trapped on scary island together. Kelly would tell Tom that he was a vampire. And then he would say that he’s actually a reincarnated space alien. She’d accuse him of bullying her by not agreeing, that he was in fact Nosferatu/Dracula. Then, Tom would try to appease her by offering her a platter of assorted lollipops and gummy bears. Katie would be on the island too, getting drunk off pinot grigio and trying to remember the last time her career was relevant. While at the same time attempting to pry Tom’s kung fu grip from around her hand. And secretly hoping a Bravo producer will rescue her by escorting her off the island.

  40. lolo says:

    the movie poster looks boring..

  41. MARKY MARK says:

A lot of the commenters on here seem to be echoing the same thing. Years ago (before all the bad publicity) I told friends that I am not a Tom Cruise fan-he just happened to be in good Movies. I think mad day has come and there aren’t any decent movies out there for him and we no see that the Emperor has no clothes

  42. dovesgate says:

I think he needs to make that Les Grossman film before he releases anything else. If its crazy hilarious, the fans will come back. I agree with the poster who said he needs to stick to character acting instead of the romantic action hero – I cant think of any women who picture Tom Cruise as the man they’d want to rescue them from the bad guy. Count me in for Jason Statham 😛

  43. Daryl says:

I don’t know why this isn’t being said more but Cameron Diaz is past her prime! Look I’m not a Cruise fan necessarily but I do still buy him as an action guy, but Diaz? I don’t really buy her as a “knock out” anymore. She looks 50 and playing single ditzy characters does not fit anymore. She needs to move on and casting agents have to do a better job. She is not a draw anymore.

  44. notprfect says:

I cringed every time I’d see those two kissing on the trailers for this movie. Ick! It would suck to be on EITHER end of THAT kiss, though I’d much rather kiss Cameron than crazy Tom. *shudder*

  45. mar says:

I won’t see this because of Diaz not Cruise. I don’t care about his personal life but at least his acting is better than Diaz. *shudder*

  46. Mia says:

Tom Cruise is 47 years old. He looks freaking amazing for 47. I know he’s nuts, but he’s aged really well. Gorgeous. Good on you, Freak.

Plus, he can act. Born on the 4th of July should have had him in Oscar contention. It would have won one for a pretty chick under 40 since the douchey male actors of the Academy all group vote with their peens and stick us with these nonsense Halle Berry, Julia Roberts wins.

Flip side: Cameron of the boxer’s nose, and inability to have an adult relationship. She’s def way past the giggly, up for fun, girl-next-door act and everybody knows it but her. I think she’s the buzz kill here too.

She really gives off the I’ve been ridden too hard, too long vibe and it’s just getting skeezy now. I find her nasty these days, and I’m shocked because I used to really like her. Plus, given what we know about lifestyles and such I always thought it would have been her pal Drew Barrymore first.
