Angelina Jolie, the Vanity Fair excerpts: kids, Venice and loving Brad “in every state”

jolie16

Over the weekend, we were able to pull some screencaps of Angelina Jolie’s Vanity Fair appearance on the August issue. She’s done a big interview to promote Salt, which comes out in a few weeks. This is actually her first extensive magazine interview since 2008, so I’m sure we’ll be pouring over every detail of the piece. For now, we have HuffPo’s excerpts from the VF piece, plus VF put up a teaser (here). Here are the excerpts I’ve gathered so far:

Angelina Jolie has begun the publicity push for upcoming spy thriller ‘Salt,’ and she begins with the cover of August’s Vanity Fair. Inside (buy the issue to read the whole interview) Jolie talks about her kids, having more kids, and Brad Pitt. As for the beard he’s been sporting, she says “I love Brad in every state.”

On marriage:
She’s not “against getting married,” but “it’s just like we already are. Children are clearly a commitment, a bigger commitment [than marriage]. It’s for life.”

On more kids:
“No, I’m not pregnant,” Angelina Jolie tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Rich Cohen, from the set of ‘The Tourist’ in Venice. “We’re not opposed to it. But we want to make sure we can give everybody special time. They’re kids now, and can play together, but they’re going to need a lot more talking in the middle of the night, like I did with my mom for hours. We want to make sure we don’t build a family so big that we don’t have absolutely enough time to raise them each really well.”

On her kids:
“Mad’s a real intellectual, which I can take no credit for genetically. He’s great at school, great at history. He feels like he could be a writer or travel the world and learn about places and things. Zahara’s got an extraordinary voice and is just so elegant and well spoken. Shiloh’s hysterically funny, one of the goofiest, most playful people you’ll ever meet. Knox and Viv are classic boy and girl. She’s really female. And he’s really a little dude.”

Jolie says that when she was growing up she was most like her daughter Shiloh:
“Goofy and verbal, the early signs of a performer…. I used to get dressed up in costumes and jump around. But at some point, I got closed off, darker. I don’t remember anything happening. I think you just get hit with the realities of certain things in life, think too much, start to realize the world isn’t as you wished it would be, so you deepen. Then, as I had kids and got older—being goofy, lighter—it all came back.”

On what Brad has been up to in Venice:
“He sculpts and designs. He makes furniture, sculpts things related to houses. Traditional male.”

On Brad with the kids:
“I keep telling Brad he owes me. He’s had a few months off in one of the most beautiful cities in the world with the children. And he’s such an artist and goes to the stone yards and the art exhibits, and loves being in such a cultural place.”

On a potential Mr. & Mrs. Smith sequel:
“People have tried. And it’s strange: do we have kids in the movie? We’ve thought about that, but it becomes personal now that we actually have kids. And if we work on it, we pull from our own life, which is funny to us, but you feel strange sharing too much. We did ask somebody to look into Mr. & Mrs. to see if they could crack a sequel, but there wasn’t anything original. It was just, Well, they’re going to get married, or they’ve got kids, or they get separated. Never great.”

On co-starring again with Brad:
“I’d love to. We’ve talked about it. We’d have to figure out who’s going to watch the kids, but it’s really about finding the right thing, because we’ve looked. When you’re a couple, there are certain things people don’t want to see you do. It becomes too indulgent, too personal. I don’t think people want to see people who are really together intimate on-screen. Maybe we have to play bad guys that try to kill each other, so it’s just fun and aggressive, not dealing with some man-woman deal.”

On acting:
“It’s not the most important thing in my life. Acting helped me as I was growing up. It helped me learn about myself, helped me travel, helped me understand life, express myself, all those wonderful things. So I’m very, very grateful, it’s a fun job. It’s a luxury. Look, I’m at work today in the middle of Venice. But I don’t think I’ll do it much longer… I have a happy home….I got back from work last night, and everybody was playing music and dancing and I suddenly found myself dancing around with a bunch of little fun crazy people.”

[From Huffington Post and Vanity Fair]

Aw, my favorite parts are when she’s talking about her kids. I love the description of Knox as “a little dude.” And personally, I’d be willing to bet that Vivienne is a wailer, as I’ve already noted. She looks like she goes from zero to tantrum in about 2 seconds. Also, I’m still awaiting Empress Zahara’s instructions on her world domination, but for now I’ll just be happy with the description of “she’s got an extraordinary voice and is just so elegant and well spoken.” Our new leader will be a great communicator. Take note.

    she is so beautiful
zahara and viv will rule that house.

  2. bite me says:

love how she looks in the suit…notice how she doesn’t mention Pax, i bet she hates him *rolls eyes*… at least she loves the bio kids now 😀

  3. Sahra says:

    Aww so cute 😀

  4. melina says:

What about Pax or whatever the boy’s name is? Please don’t have anymore kids! You’ve already forgotten one of them! lol
Also, she looks like a big headed, incest eyed alien in the last photo but in the first she’s gorgeous and pretty amazing, especially in the smiling one. Loose the bangs, Angie!

  5. Ruby Red Lips says:

    Love her…so gorgeous!

  6. Mairead says:

The photos in the suit are nice – but she looks like the world’s scariest Bratz doll in that bottom photo – AJ, love, please eat more, being that thin doesn’t suit you. But keep the fringe 😉

I’m hoping that the lack of mention about Pax is poor excerpt skills either by VF or by HuffPo, esp as he’s my favourite.

  7. adam says:

Angelina is the real thing..compared to those younger plastic dolls exhibit A megan fox she’s a godess
angelina is the most beautiful woman in the world

  8. melina says:

I obviously meant insect eyed! lol

  9. Darlene says:

    What about Pax??

  10. anon says:

    whatever
    boring as always

  11. Q says:

Ah man, just when I’ve decided I loathe her, she gives an interview like this where she doesn’t sound all holier-than-thou, but like a person who grew up, had kids and put their head on straight. I appreciate that she’s dropped the “we’re going to have a MILLION kids” thing.

EXCEPT, thanks, melina – she did forget a kid! Aha, maybe she is the devil woman after all.

  12. serena says:

I admire Angelina very much, she seems real and responsible.

  13. DD says:

I like what she said on having more kids. She’s showing some real maturity and wisdom. Quality is better than quantity. They have the perfect family now, and shouldn’t try to overthrow the balance at least while they are so young.

  14. Hautie says:

Everyone does realize she is wearing a wig with bangs, yes? It is not her hair.

I always wonder why they put so much makeup on her. All the crazy eye shadow is just not necessary.

She is one of those girls that always photograph well and just does not need all the plastered on makeup. Just some mascara and a little lip gloss is all the girl really needs.

  15. bite me says:

its not a wig, its extension for volume and then a bang

  16. bellebeesting says:

loathe her; however, will grant her this one point: she’s a better PR manipulator than Chris Brown.

  17. Bee says:

I love when Angelina and Brad talk about their kids. They clearly adore those children. It seems like they have a very fun and interesting family.

  18. Maritza says:

She does look like a Bratz doll but a very beautiful one. I think she didn’t mention Pax because he probably is a very shy boy, at least that’s what it seems to me.

  19. Miranda Ann says:

“Loathe”?? That is really a harsh word to use regarding someone you don’t know. I can see “dislike” or even “hate” but loathe?? What a horrible thing to say.

  20. nnn says:

I love this interview that show how mature she is.

“I love Brad in any state”….that’s a woman totally into her man, whatever his physique. What comfort must it be for the partner to have someone who loves you even when you looks like hell.

I am envious about her happy serenity. she must really be content with her life. She sure is at a right place in her life and it has more to do with love, commitment, sharing and building together than with money and professional successes.

People who have a loving home and a partner who is in par with them are the real fortunate and the real winners in life. All that really counts in life is LOVE from your loved ones, people you can absolutely count on in bad and happy times equally.

  21. Iggles says:

Wow, I didn’t realize Pax was not mentioned until I read the comments! Uh oh. She pulled a Jude Law..

  22. Cheyenne says:

Oh God, cue the haters. They always have to convince themselves she hates one or more of the children. First it was “Where’s Shiloh? They never take her anywhere! Why don’t they love Shiloh?” Then it was “Where are the twins? I wanna see the TWINSSSSSS!!! She doesn’t love her own babies!” And now it’s Pax. From what I’ve seen in photos, he seems to be as much loved and as much a part of the family as the other kids.

  23. N.D. says:

it’s weird she forgot about Pax while gushing about all of them including Brad.

I’m glad they are real about just how big a family they can handle.

I hope she talks about something else but her fam. As much as she loves them and as much as I’m happy they are happy I’d still rather hear her talk about some other things too. Like the movie she’s promoting, how fun it was to make it, what she’d seen in her travels, what books she’d read and so on.

And the more I look at that cover shot the less I like it. Inside pics are much better even so she’s wearing the same(or similar) horrible over the top eye makeup in them.

  24. irena NL says:

She is being criticized about what she said about Shiloh but I’d rather her be honest about cutting Shi’s hair for the reason they did rather – than all the speculation. The parents are not encouraging Shiloh to be this or that but accepting her as she is right now. Who she is now will most likely not be her adult personality. And, if it is, accept it!

  25. Solveig says:

*And somebody still says that Megan Fox is dumb… what about AngieJo?”

The bangs don’t do her any favours, make her look too masculine and square-faced.

The other pictures are ok, she looks almost like the Angelina I used to “like” years ago.

Ps: no matter what she says, Brad Pitt will always be perceived as a dumb person, artsy my a**.

PPS: is that a tattoo on her right thigh (on the other thread’s pictures)?

  26. Shi-gatsu says:

is it just me – or is this interview a little boring? same ol’ same ol’

  27. bellebeesting says:

Miranda @ 19 – no more disproportionate than the “love her” comments from loons, tho, is it? Really? And BTW, I generally loathe her film roles, too.

  28. skibunny says:

What else is she going to say? I hated Brad’s beard, my kids are brats, I’m anorexic? Of course she’s going to say everything is wonderful. Just like “most” celebrity interviews all is well in la la land.

  29. Sumodo1 says:

    Real hard-hitting journalism. (Eye-roll).

  30. Cheyenne says:

@N.D.: Nobody knows what all else Angie talked about in the interview until the magazine comes out next month. HuffPo excerpted what they thought would best feed the trolls.

  31. Lisa S. says:

There is a chance that they are really really happy, but not as perfect as she is trying to make their life seem. But I agree with skibunny, what else is she going to say? She is not going to share their problems with the public.

  32. nnn says:

Well it’s more refreshing saying she loves her man and her children than talking about a 5 years old spring cleansing, about equaling going to Mexico to doing humanitarian deeds to help the poor people there and about the way her man think thoughts…i mean, really she is quite refreshingly normal compared to those immature comments comming from a 40 years old.

  33. snowball says:

It’s well, you know, what you expect her to say. She adores her kids, talks about how different they are, shares a little about their little quirks, talks about how she and Brad are already like a married couple, how they’ll have more kids when they’re ready or maybe not. She sort of hints that she or Brad would like to stay at home more with the kiddos and give them a stable home somewhere away from the paps where they can just be a real family.

She says some smart, adult things so everyone can ooh and aah over how mature and gosh normal she’s gotten since her Billy Bob days and then a good photographer takes some awesome pics so we can again marvel at what a freakishly beautiful woman she can be.

It’s not like this is unexpected. The worst thing is, she sounds pretentious, and before everyone jumps down my throat, I know she’s not. She’s done some awesome interviews with Ann Curry especially where she’s just incredibly human and humble and I wish it came across better in print.

  34. Jeri says:

The kids are cute but I wish she wouldn’t talk about them to publicize her movies. She could say they are not for public consumpion or just “that is private.”

She & Brad have enough pull to get press without using the kids.

  35. Kim says:

#34 That applies to almost every celeb talking about their kids when they do interviews. I rather her talk about them than have the BS the tabloids print being the only info about them .

  36. jules says:

look at her alien foot in the first picture- her left….still a beauty

  37. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Maybe people should read the WHOLE interview before they assume she forgot Pax. Jeez, THESE ARE EXCERPTS!!!! Even if Pax isn’t mentioned in the whole interview, Angelina loves all her kids. They love her and they are happy well adjusted babies. I L-O-V-E Angelina, she is amazing and she just keeps proving it.

The only thing that makes me really sad is the fact I won’t be able to see her in new films after awhile. *Sigh* Its hard now. However Salt comes out soon and the Tourist sooo I am sooo freaking excited. 😀

  38. Katija says:

Forgetting Pax has nothing to do with her love for him. Parents with a lot of kids forget. Doesn’t mean they love them any less. I am from a family of four kids – small compared to the Pitt-Jolies – and I’ve gotten used to hearing “oh yeah, don’t forget about Katija.” My dad has eight siblings and his own mother gets birthdays confused, mixes up wives/husbands names.

  39. Mentok the Mind Taker says:

Same old, same old. It’s almost as bad as the Kardashian’s miracle weight loss covers.

(And I’m truly shocked that Praise hasn’t put her two cents in yet…)

  40. Heather says:

She’s a SPECTACULAR PR manipulator. She creates her own image without any help, including telling mags when she’ll be out at the playground with her kids. I don’t care. She needs to go before she becomes desperate AND insane. Bow down, take the cash, focus on the that brood and, if anybody cares, that relationship. Her “natural” beauty is entirely overrated – and has diminished considerably with her weight and behavior over the years. Pretty is as pretty does. Funny thing is: Tom Cruise can’t get the moviegoers to the theater b/c he’s alienated the public. WE’ll see about Jolie. I’m long since over her and always thought she played one role (like MEg Ryan): herself , in this case, psycho chicks or chronic liars who are pretending to be something they aren’t. True, no?

  41. Mistral says:

    What about PAX? lol

    Angelina is gorgeous.

  42. Mistral says:

    What about PAX? lol

    Angelina is gorgeous.

  43. NicoleAM says:

Is she not aging well, or is it that she’s too thin? She doesn’t look the same, and I’m not talking about 10 yrs ago either. Her interviews are always the same BTW. I was a fan back in the day, and every interview was about her “pain and suffering” and now it’s about Brad and the kids.

  44. Camille says:

Great interview, she does sound like she has matured a lot, nothing wrong with that, is there? No, didn’t think so. Gorgeous woman too.

  45. Cletus says:

Well, what the hell else is she supposed to talk about, if not her family? I talk about my family a lot. Also, ZOMBIES.

  46. N.D. says:

She’s aging like normal person with 6 kids and job.

  47. Holly says:

This is by far the most stupid interview I’ve ever read. She says the same, mundane shit she’s been spouting for the last 5 years: “I’m going to stop making movies, my kids are so spectacularly individual, we’re already like a married couple, our kids tie us together more than a marriage certificate, I’m such a deep person…blah…blah…blah…”. My favorite part is the whole “we’d love to work together again but we’re having trouble finding somebody to watch the children!!!!!!”. Oh please. Like you don’t have a million people on staff for that very reason. I’m sorry. I don’t buy her and her ridiculous “we’re the happiest circus in the world!!!” PR shit. She never comes across as sincere to me.
