The new trailer for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows – will you see it?

Video: ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ Trailer
I was warned that the last Harry Potter movie was really boring, but I went to see it anyway and ended up leaving about half way through. I’ve read all the books and have seen all the movies up to that point, but the film was pure drudgery and I stopped watching during a particularly tiresome party scene. That was last year’s two and half hour lonh Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, the sixth film installment in an otherwise solidly entertaining young adult fantasy series.

The last book in the seven part series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be made into two 3D films for maximum profit story-telling ability. The first installment in the finale will premiere this October and the final is out in July of next year. The trailer recently came out (above) and it looks action-packed, but it just doesn’t hold the same appeal for me. The anticipation is gone and I’m kind of over HP. I think that the mediocrity of the last film, the rise of Twillight (which is much more mediocre but kind of steals HP’s thunder), along with too much time between sequels, helped kill it for me.

I still enjoy Harry Potter though and I’ll probably go see this. I’m in my late 30s and I have a son who isn’t old enough to watch the much darker and scarier Harry Potter. The series just doesn’t hold the same appeal for me as it did a few years ago and I still can’t enjoy it with my son.

Lainey loves Harry Potter and is massively excited for this film. What about the rest of you – do you care? Are you particularly invested in Harry’s fate? I vaguely remember what happens in the book, along with my incredible disappointment at the lackluster epilogue by Rowling. I like Harry Potter and the books and movies have lasted longer than most. The public has been sold six movies so far over ten years, though, and there are plenty of us who won’t be running out to see the last two. My mind could be changed, though, if advance reviews are good.

Digital Spy has a frame-by-frame picture analysis of the video if you’re interested. (Warning: spoilers in that link.)

Yessir! Still get kinda annoyed when idiots try to compare Harry Potter with that Twilight garbage.

That’s like comparing a 7th grade basketball championship to the NBA finals.

  2. Liana says:

    I am so seeing this!

  3. Celebitchy says:

I definitely know that there is no comparison between Twilight and HP. Twilight did steal some of HP’s thunder, though, and that’s all I’m trying to say.

  4. lisa says:

I will say I am such a fan of HP. I have seen every movie and read every book.. AND I am over 21.. lol.

I feel such a connection to these characters. And I love that they have all stayed committed to this project. The child in me grew up on those books. and to see the end well it is bitter sweet. BRAVO to the writers, actors, and producers and everyone involved.. They have not disappointed once.

so yes this is a will and must see.

regarding the Twilight comparison. NONE is possible. Potter created a passion in children to read again. Kids that never liked books read these.. And we are talking boys and girls alike. Twilight to me seems a tween melodrama. Girls are drawn to these movies. NOT boys/teens. They may go with a girlfriend but guys are not talking this movie. YOUNG boys and teens like the Potter magic. they read the books and want to see the visual representations of those books.

HP will be remembered years and years from now. Twilight will last til the final movie and Kristen Stewart or Rob P or Taylor get in real relationships and get older. Truth..

OH and the production quality of these two are night and DAY.. Potter does not skimp. Twilight has made enough money for them to do a better job on the production. It always looks cheaply done.

  5. Jillian says:

I shall see it!!! I love love love Harry Potter.

And I don’t think there’s any comparison between Twilight and HP either! Twilight is a badly written piece of fluff that’s mostly marketing. Harry Potter is a story! With Plot! And Characters!

And HP also has better values. It’s about the importance of love and friendship, and having the courage to do what’s right even when it’s not easy. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.

    Okay, I’m done.

  6. masonwasp says:

Sorry to be this person, but “pre-warned” is redundant.

Other than that, I’ll still see this movie. Even if it sucks. You must have closure.

  7. Nicolette James says:

    CAN. NOT. WAIT!

  8. Dizzybenny says:

    I’m glad that there’s a 2D version of it.sick of 3D! 🙁

  9. Alex says:

Twlight can’t never steal HP thunder in my book. The twlight movies are fluff fluff. HP’s movies is more real to be that the twlight movies, which I find silly.

    I completely agree with Jillian

I love the trailer and I can’t wait for November to come. I already have a babysitter line up for our daughter even though she is not born yet(September)lol. My bf and I love HP

  10. L says:

I don’t think twilight could steal Potter’s thunder. People may not go as gaga over Radcliffe as they do sparkles-but the pictures/books have always been much bigger and much more anticipated than any of that twilight crap. I mean, how many posts were there about the new twilight movie 4 months before release date?

I CANNOT WAIT for this film. I just hope that dividing it into 2 sections will keep the producers from doing the crap they did with the 5th and 6th films.

  11. sketches says:

    counting the days!!!!

  12. Alex says:

And I am sure that there are plenty of people that will be going out to see the next two HP’s movies. HP still have a huge fan base

  13. manda says:

I can totally wait for the movie, although I am sure I will see it. Probably on DVD. Like you, I am a bit weary, but I did read all the books, and I have really come to enjoy seeing them performed.

  14. flourpot says:

“Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.” I lol’d.

  15. Riley says:

I am rereading the last book because I know I will be dragged to the movie. My favorite HP movie is Goblet of Fire. I hated The Order of the Phoenix— snooze-a-roo but I kind of liked The Half Blood Prince. Kind of… I think I could live if I did not see this movie in the theater but I am not sure some of friends would be able to, and yes, if all of my friends jumped off the top of a bridge I would jump too.

  16. GatsbyGal says:

Definitely seeing it, though I still need to read the final book before then (I’ve had it spoiled for me, though, so I know some of what happens…I just have to read it!).

I can’t believe you walked out of Half Blood Prince, CB. You missed the best ending of the entire series. It’s so beautiful and powerful. You need to watch it again.

  17. me2also says:

I will def be seeing the last 2 movies. I consider myself a big HP fan. The books jump started me back into reading regularly back when she was on book 3 (I didn’t think I’d like them so I started the series late) and I’ve been an avid reader ever since (finish one book and on to the next w.out any time between). I enjoyed the last movie both in story line and visually. HP is far better than Twilight both in book and movie form, although I do enjoy the series but not to the extent of HP.

  18. danielle says:

LOVED the books! Excited about the movie. Agree with everyone else on HP vs twilight

  19. Bodhi says:

Hell yeah I’m gonna see it! I LOVE HP!

  20. ering says:

I’m too far in to give up now, so of course I’m going to see this movie, just as I have dutifully done with the others. I’m not freaking out with excitement, but these books started coming out when I was in middle school and everyone read them, so me and a lot of my friends pretty much grew up with these Harry Potter characters.

  21. Rachel says:

CB I didn’t like HBP either. Not because it was boring but because they changed too much from the book. I’ve loved all the movies up til then. And I will definitely see the last two. In fact, I’ll probably brave midnight showings. Something I’ve never done. And possibly in costume. What can I say. I’m addicted to HP. I write HP fanfic.

  22. marge says:

None of these stories (twilight or HP) are a match to LOTR. They’re definitely on a lower rank as far as stories go, and to me that’s all the comparison. I did enjoy HP -at least the first three books, and the rest just dragged on forever, with nothing really happening- and gave Twilight a chance, but it did nothing for me. Will catch these movies on cable eventually, I guess. I’m all in for The Hobbit 🙂

  23. Sarah says:

I’ll see it when it comes to video only because I have 2 boys that love the movies.

  24. Novaraen says:

Oh heck yes I will be seeing it.

The Twilight movies are garbage. Teen sappy sh*t that just annoys me to no end.

  25. Linda says:

There’s no way we’re going to miss it!

  26. Stephie says:

Will see, will buy. Not the 3D though. Love HP. Wish they didn’t split up the last one, so obviously greedy for revenue. I think the ride had been lucrative enough. Someone mentioned closure and I agree, whether the movies are great or not, after so many years invested in the series, closure is needed.

  27. Cheyenne says:

Sure, I’ll see it, if only to see what they did to the book. They gutted the books in the third and sixth films. The fifth film was so-so. The first film was quite good but the second was by far the best adaptation. That movie was even better than the book.

  28. constance says:

Who would Sparkles be if not for Harry Potter? just sayin…

I really liked all the HP movies, despite all the ways they differed from the brilliant books. I started with the movies. My younger sister started with the books, so I understand why she has felt some frustrations. I think the movies each did a good job of letting new people without much history of the story jump in.

That said I can’t wait for the final two to be seen. That book was such a roller coaster. I’m actually glad they split the movie. The book covers a LOT of plot lines very quickly. There were so many details missing from the shorter books…

IMO, I agree with many of you out there that finds no real quality in the writing of Twilight, books or movies. I was 20 when I first attempted to read the first book. Couldn’t do it.

  29. mr. stinky fishface says:

This is a great comparison of Twilight vs. Harry Potter.

    http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/ask_the_answer_bitch/b187768_once_all_harry_potter_better_twilight.html

I can not wait to see the new HP movie and I will not be seeing the new Twlight movie.

  30. Mouse says:

I think it’s funny that Robert Pattinson got his break in The Goblet of Fire and then landed the lead in Twilight. He got lucky both times.

I’ve read the Potter series and the Twilight series and enjoyed both, but Rowling is a still a much better writer than Meyer. Hands down.

  31. Schanuzers!!! says:

Yes yes yes! I will be seeing Harry Potter! (I LOVED Sparkles as Cedric Diggory btw he was my fantasy Cougar Bait. LOL…hate him as Sparkles)

I have yet to see a Twilight movie (Saw 5 mins of K-stew in a hospital bed acting desparate at Sparkles on HBO and almost puked) and am not intersted in seeing them at all.

  32. M says:

    OF COURSE I’ll see it!!!!

  33. Morgs says:

Waiting until DVD but I will absolutely be seeing it. Love HP!!!

It kind of breaks my heart that I can never go back and read the series for the first time again. I can’t wait to have a little munchkin to read the first two books to.

  34. Lady D says:

    Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!!!!

  35. Lisa S. says:

My daughter and I are the biggest Harry Potter nerds… we can’t wait!

  36. viper says:

lmfao!!! LOOK HOW SHORT HARRY IS

and yes I am going to see it because unlike the sparkles Harry potter has an actual story …and I love magic.

  37. serena says:

I can’t wait to see that. I didn’t read the books (too much trouble) so I’m not a very very fan but I love the movies.

  38. Tear says:

Finally! I have to say I’m over 50 and wouldn’t miss them.

  39. Amelia says:

Is that question a joke? I got chills watching that trailer! And I’m 51 years old! I’ll be there opening day!

  40. Cletus says:

Hells yes I’m gonna see it. My daughter is going to Hogwarts as soon as she becomes of age. YES SHE IS, DONT JUDGE ME.

    (Ravenclaw RULZ.)

  41. Lilias says:

I am so going to see this at midnight. And I am totally dressing up. I started the books when I was eleven and Harry was eleven-I literally grew up at the same pace. I was their target audience, I guess. So yea, I’m going to take my 24 year old butt to a midnight showing of, technically, a kids movie. Yea!

  42. Lindsay says:

Twilight books are good, movies suck, but Harry Potter books are amazing and the movies are pretty damn good, though they stray from the books a bit too much sometimes, but that’s just because I’m such a fan so I have high expectations. But Harry Potter is a 600 – twilight is a negative 100, though I enjoyed both books there is no comparing in writing ability, style, storyline, and characters. Stephanie Meyer invented a story but J.K. Rowling developed a story and an entire world and in a much better way.

  43. mags says:

love it. harry potter is a great tale, just a GREAT F-ing STORY that’s why it’s awesome. one of my students (here in korea) studies english super hard because he wants to be able to read Harry Potter in English. how awesome is that??

  44. Laura says:

Marge-You beat me to the punch. Thank you.
The HP fans getting indignant (and rightfully so) at comparisons to Twilight now understand how so many of us felt when you compared HP to LOTR. You just can’t.
JK Rowling is a perfectly fine author, but she can’t and never will be able to hold a candle to Tolkien.
And Stephanie Meyer just can’t write.

  45. Isa says:

I will def. see this. I am so excited! I’m glad they split it up to two movies, I know a lot of people don’t like it but I think it will help do the book/storyline justice. Which is important to someone like me-a diehard fan.

I WILL go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter…and will probably pee my pants!!!!!

  46. Jen says:

    Sooooo excited!

  47. truthSF says:

    Agree with Marge and Laura!!!

    LOTR = THE BEST
    HP = SECOND BEST
    TWILIGHT = SHIIITTT!!!!

  48. Adrien says:

Yep, gonna see it. I’ve invested so much in this series. I was 14 the first HP, now I’m an adult.

  49. Crash2GO2 says:

The sets themselves are such a marvel – pure magic. I plan on seeing all the movies eventually, although budgets probably won’t allow me to see this one in theatre. Unless I can hoodwink someone into taking me as a DATE. *gasp*

  50. DetRiotgirl says:

Go ahead and hate me if you must LOTR fans, but I absolutely hated the series. I was forced to read The Hobbit for a book group at school back when I was a kid. We used to split the class into three or four groups, and then each group would be assigned a book to read and review with a parent.

I was assigned the hobbit, along with about seven or eight other kids. The parent in charge of reviewing our group loved LOTR. So did all the other children in my group, as a matter of fact. I got up and explained that I hated the repitative, boring narrative and utterly uninteresting characters. It was my opinion that the whole book was a complete waste of time, save for the gollum. I still think the gollum is the only good thing in the whole series! Anyway, long story short, my book group tore me a new one and my parent failed me because I didn’t agree with everyone else’s opinion.

Over the years I have really tried to get over my grudge about this. But, I just can’t. I’ve been dragged to all the movies by friends who want to convert me and I STILL find them boring and the charaters bland and unmoving. I even tried to read the rest of the LOTR books. I will never understand the appeal of the series.

However, I LOVE Harry Potter! For me, it has the character interactions that I found lacking in LOTR. I will probably go see this movie on opening day, even though I think there’s a good chance the film makers will screw the book up like they did in the last movie.

And finally, to finish this rant, I want to agree with everyone who thinks Twilight sucks harder than a vacuum cleaner with a warp drive. At least LOTR musters up enough literary respect from me for me to TRY to understand what the big deal is. With Twilight, I literally feel my intelligence was insulted by even attempting to read the back cover.

  51. Carol says:

I am in my early 40’s and will definitely be seeing the last two movies. I actually took books 1, 2 and 4 on my honeymoon. My husband made fun of my wanting to read book 4 so I took the first two and asked him to read just the first chapter of the first book before he commented again. He devoured it, thanked me profusely for bringing the second one, and then we spent one whole day in Hawaii roaming bookstores trying to find the 3rd in paperback so that he could read it as well. We had to buy 2 copies of each subsequent book in the series because otherwise we would have fought over who got to read it first. I can’t wait until our boys are old enough to read them and watch the movies. The movies aren’t as good as the books, and sometimes they’ve changed facts I thought were critical to the story, but I still think they’ve been worth viewing. We have a standing date night for the opening weekend of each movie.

  52. Missfit says:

DUH, ofcoarse I am! I’m pg with a girl and I’m naming her Hermione. It’s funny, cause when I first saw the first movie and read the first book a decade ago, I said, I will name my daughter that someday. 😉 I’ve been a fan since the beginning! The movies and books have never disappointed me, it sends such an adrenaline through my veins, I literally get excited. I’m not even excited to see Twilight. I mean, I like that movie and all, but I can wait to see it. There’s no comparison. Harry Potter has my heart, no doubt, and it’s worth every penny. 😉 Only HP hardcore addict junkies can understand that, lol. I love to dress myself and my boys up for Halloween in our HP costumes, all specific and decked out and shit, it never gets old, they get loads of attention. 😉 HP freaks for life! lol

  53. Lia says:

I’ll definitely go see both movies! We’ve come this far, reading the books and watching the movies. How can we not want to see how it ends on the screen? Can’t wait!

  54. chris says:

I’m so happy someone is calling out the last couple HP movies as being duller than a doorstop. Geez!!
