Singer Jewel does karaoke in disguise, thrills crowded bar (video)

I was just going to link this video when I saw it this morning on OMG Blog, but then I watched it and I’m such a sap that I almost started crying! It touched me like a kind of reverse Susan Boyle story.

Anyway the people at Funny or Die set up a scenario where Jewel donned a prosthetic nose, dark wig and glasses to go to a karaoke bar in Santa Monica with a bunch of actors playing her work colleagues. They got up the anticipation by yelling for “Karen” to take the stage. Then when Jewel started singing – and of course sounded just like Jewel – the crowd went wild. She sang another one of her songs to their delight and cheers, and eventually left. Jewel took off her disguise and came back to sing more while everyone marveled that she was there. There’s no way I can do this video justice, so please watch it when you get a chance. It’s a great concept and the way they played it off was kind of triumphant.

    She’s still relevant?

  2. GeekLuva80 says:

Wow… I was a fan back in the day and this just renewed my love for Jewel.

  3. Sudini says:

Brilliant! I love Jewel. And that crowd is so cute.

  4. Renee says:

I feel like such a crabby patty, but I don’t find this video heartwarming or funny. It’s patronizing and just seems lame, like when Tyra puts on a fat suit.

  5. Boo says:

To some of us. And that video totally brightened my morning. Thank you!

  6. bubbs says:

She seems really sweet and genuine.

  7. Praise St. Angie! says:

aw…I was never a fan of her music (didn’t hate it, just didn’t love it…) but that is awesome!

  8. Sarah says:

That was cute. I love her voice.

  9. annaloo says:

    awww…

  10. Feebee says:

That was funny and cool and I have a tear in my eye. Except for the chick outside talking to “Karen” telling her as an ugly girl with such a voice she’ll still get laid. WTF?

  11. Romi says:

That woman called “Karen” (fake Jewel) ugly! On her face. Rude.

  12. Katija says:

Go Jewel! I’ve loved her since the very beginning. (Except for that God-awful poetry book; but honey, this video cancels out that black hole of awfulness!)

Amidst all the douchebag and crackho celeb stories we see here, it’s so nice to see something like this.

  13. Anne de Vries says:

Yeah, I think I’m with Renee. It’s kind of… cringey.

  14. Katija says:

    @Feebee and Romi

I can’t help but think that the woman was prompted to say that. Like, before she said that, “Karen” said, “Well, I’m not very pretty.”

Because the woman who said it wasn’t exactly Angelina Jolie. Either she was prompted to say it or very drunk. I’m going to give her a pass because I want to love everything about that clip.

  15. Celebitchy says:

On the woman who told Karen she was ugly – I noticed that too and was hoping that at that point the news was out that it was Jewel in disguise. It was just too mean to say to someone’s face and I hope it didn’t go down like that.

  16. denise says:

Jewel has a lovely voice. Foolish Games is a beautiful song, and she does a hell of a job delivering it.

  17. aenflex says:

You cannot deny that Jewel has a great voice and acutally puts some soul into her music. So what of her personality or whether or not she is relevant? Is that all that matters anymore, relevancy over talent? Sad.

  18. Riley says:

God I want a beer (and a glass of wine)… I wish she had yodled, though.

  19. MsTriste says:

Great “practical joke”. I am glad I took the time to watch that.

  20. GrnMtGirl says:

    That was fun…

  21. Debbi says:

I think what the woman on the street said was you _could_ be an ugly girl (implying that she isn’t) and sing like that and you would definitely get laid.

  22. Kim says:

Im a little bummed she got her teeth fixed. When did she do that? cute concept – nice to see everyone singing along

  23. Mari says:

    FAN.tastic.

  24. Atticus says:

The first time I saw Jewel in concert was when she first released Pieces Of You and she played a small bar near my college, not much bigger than this place looks…she was the same, gracious, down to earth and wickedly talented person then as she is now. Love her!!!

Best part was the guy at the end who said “Karen” sang better than Jewel did. HAH!

  25. LindaR says:

I have heard her interviewed. She doesn’t suffer fools gladly so is fun to listen to if the person interviewing her asks her really stupid questions. Especially when it is a male asking dumb “man talking to a pretty girl” questions. She’s great.

  26. Pix says:

    This was so cute.

  27. raincoaster says:

Karen looks a lot like Ashlee Simpson. There, I said it.

  28. irishserra says:

I’ve been out of the loop for a while, but I really loved Jewel back in the day. When she was getting dressed up in her disguise I thought, “For sure they’ll take one look at her and be able to identify her by her very unique teeth!”

Silly me. I just looked down through the pics and noticed that she had them “fixed.” Too too bad. I loved her snaggled smile. It suited her well and I still thought she was beautiful. But her voice is very appealing and I’m glad she had some fun with this, although I did feel that it was sort of patronizing, as well.

  29. elisha says:

No else has mentioned it, so I will. Jewel is a country singer now, and her country fans LOVE her and she is still very much a huge country star. In other words, she sucessfully did what Jessica Simpson tried to do and couldn’t. So yes, she is still just as releveant as any other blonde country singer: Cari Underword, Jessica Simpson, or Taylor Swift.

  30. BeeCee says:

    @raincoaster: hahaha!! Very true!

  31. gg says:

That is a sweet video. I love the guy’s reaction at the end.

Say what you want, but Jewel has got some very talented pipes and can write a good, soulful tune. She’s not my style but I respect her hugely.

  32. Seri says:

Those two songs of hers, foolish games and Dreams last for so long… that reminds me of a time in my life that always makes me cry. so yeah. I’m team tears on this one!

  33. original kate says:

she’s a little full of herself, as always.

  34. yae says:

She is a ray of sunshine.

  35. flourpot says:

I don’t know Jewel but I thought this was brilliant. I showed my whole family and they all loved it. The way the crowd was cheering “karen” on was fab and when she came back and sang her song, everyone was so happy. I’m not sure if she’s full of herself or not, but I’d of been a happy girl in that crowd!

  36. Sue Wile (SuzieWho) says:

I got such a kick out of watching this. I too sing Karaoke and it’s my little corner to excel as I was never able to pursue my career to sing as Jewel did. I know what it’s like to be accosted after a performance because the people believe I’m professional and I also know the fabulous feeling to know that people cry when they say my singing touches their heart. My Karaoke has been my success story, and thank goodness someone thought up the process, cause without it I couldn’t be a successful singing wannabe, lol. Go Jewel, how great of you to particpate and to share.

  37. KarenFan says:

    That was the awesomest.

  38. emv says:

I liked her back in the olden days, but now she is just annoying.

  39. Confuzzle says:

Wow great video, that was a great laugh. Thanks for sharing that, CB!

Thank you so much for posting this.
