ps – I don’t think it’s insecurity that prompts it. Just imagine that you’ve gained a pound or to because you’ve just come back from a holiday and suddenly members of the press start writing speculative stories. Then paps start asking and trailing you; then reporters ask in interviews, and even if you demure or deny, it snowballs as a story; suddenly your mom and family are ringing you up in the middle of the night to ask if the stories are true.

Given all of that? I don’t doubt she just started working out to stop the stupid rumours.

Sometimes these things take on a life of their own. You don’t necessarily have to be insecure to want to head them off. Just tired of hearing about it every five minutes.

Tell us something we don’t know. ‘Baby bump’ is just a new way of telling women they’re getting ‘fat’, and it’s interestingly limited to women by virtue of it being linked to reproduction.

So now everytime a women becomes what someone in the media thinks is ‘bigger’ they can just call the subject pregnant.

Yet another veiled way of scrutinising women’s bodies, without getting called on it because it can be well-intentioned.

Well you know what they say about the road the hell, right?

I’m still waiting for this kind of scrutiny to be levelled at male bodies. Oh, wait, right I forget men aren’t routinely expected to wear mid-drift baring, clingy clothes. They can just wear a suit, or a baggy top or jacket. And even if they look like they’re eating for two and have the belly it’s not because they’re pregnant.

Maybe all actresses should start wearing those billowy tops on principle, just to make a point.
