All new posts will have commenting on the page
If you were wondering why it’s been a little quiet around here this morning it’s because I’ve been working to enable the comments on the site. We’ve used Haloscan for over a year to reduce the load on the server.
We needed to allow for commenting directly on the site in order to have more control over comment spam, and to provide new features like comment editing, smilies, and spam reporting.
Haloscan comments still accessible from within older posts
None of your old discussions have been lost, they’re all accessible and you can still comment using Haloscan for older posts.
I know this is a real inconvenience for current discussions, and I tried several workarounds to no avail. Just open the individual post page, i.e. “CNN reporter Richard Quest wearing rope on genitals when arrested,” and scroll to the bottom to launch the pop-up window.
The “recent comments” display to the lower right of every page will now be for the most recent posts with comments and won’t reflect what’s in the Haloscan system.

I’m very sorry for the inconvenience during this transition, but hopefully the new comment system is easier to use. Please let us know if you would like any changes or additional features. It’s all on a trial basis for now to see how it works.

It is possible you could have someway to still let us know on the main page how many comments there are? That way we can easily tell if there are new comments.

Headache for all the new posts there will be new comment numbers. I tried for hours to get the old Haloscan comments to appear as a numbered link on the homepage and it really was not possible. I’m not a coder, but I dug into the Wordpress backend scripts too and I couldn’t get it to work.

p.s. how long do we get to edit, meaning, can we just keep giong back to our original comments to add to discussion or do we have to post again…….if that makes sense -
You can edit for 15 minutes. Would you like me to add a timer thingy and/or set it for 30 minutes? I didn’t put the timer on because I thought it might tax the server.
Also, to get an icon next to your name you can just register for one with Gravatar.com, I should add that to the comments template.

I don’t think we need the timer; you don’t want to do anything unnecessary that will add to the server load. But thanks for making these changes, it makes the site look a little more “big boy”.

I don’t mind the comments on the site, however I have a ton of ads at the top of the page, the contact/advertise, etc buttons are all squished up. Some stuff on the main page is overlapping, also. Just wanted to let you know!!

I’m sorry, this is also incredibly picky, but would it be possible for the ‘Hot Posts’ col to go back to where it was on the left hand side and have the 2 cols of posts in the centre of the page like before. Just an aesthetic thing.

The reason why a lot of you are seeing the site looking like it’s formatted badly is because you have the old stylesheet loaded in your browser. I have changed the name of the stylesheet to force it to load fresh for everyone, so hit reload and let me know if you still have the same problem with the site looking scrambled.

woohoo! This is way better for the commenting-newbee’s like myself! Now I know how to get an icon next to my name and put icons in the text. I have a random question that maybe one of you experts might know the answer to. I have seen other people’s comments change the font (like using italics or bold words) and I was wondering how you do that? I always “CAPITALIZE” everything I need to emphasize. I love some italics!

Comment Policy: Please be courteous as if you are having a conversation in person. No all-caps posts.
