Emma Watson’s super-short pixie cut: adorable or copying Carey Mulligan?

emma

Or both? Because that was my immediate reaction: “Oh, Emma Watson looks adorable with a Carey Mulligan pixie cut!” Emma’s hair used to be to her shoulders. She used to style it in cute ways too. But now she’s chopped it all off – this photo comes from her Facebook page, via LaineyGossip. Apparently, Emma wrote this: “Dear all. Cut my hair off a few days ago… Feels incredible. I love it. I’ve wanted to do this for years and years; it’s the most liberating thing ever. Hope you like. Big love from Emma x”.

It’s also totally Mia Farrow, right? Whenever I see a girl with this haircut, I just think about Rosemary’s Baby. You have to give it to Mia – that was a time when girls were supposed to have long hair and they were supposed to do the curlers and everything. Mis chopped it off and started an amazing trend. I could never get my hair cut like this. I don’t have the face for it. But I admire girls who do it. I think it’s particularly ballsy.

Oh, yeah–if I were more petite with different facial structure, I would try the short hair.

  2. BW says:

I love short hair on some women — Carey Mulligan, Halle Berry, Audry Hepburn, Mia Farrow. I think the cut looks great on Emma, too. She was probably required to keep her hair long for 10 years worth of HP movies, so I bet it does feel empowering to cut it.

  3. YOYO99 says:

    I like it alot!

  4. Kaboom says:

    Works for me.

  5. lisa says:

She looks so cute. love it.. and I just adore her.

Short hair looks great and love that some women are not afraid to do it.

I cut my hair short for the first time at 19.. never looked back.

Let the fake hair go.. (tired of the extensions)

  6. Kiska says:

It suits her more so than long hair.

  7. Marjalane says:

Oh! I love it! It takes a really pretty face, (Hello, Halle Berry) to pull it off and she’s rocking it!

  8. Missfit says:

No, not my little Hermione, my favorite character from HP,lol. The sides look a bit too short, but she still looks cute and can pull it off. I’m naming my daughter after your HP character Emma. 😉 I remember when I first saw her on the first HP film, the way her hair was then, was so adorably cute, with the frizz and messy look, loved it. 😉

  9. Sheila in Chicago says:

Adorable. She looks great. And love that she’s not a slave to long hair or extensions. Liberating, indeed.

  10. The Bobster says:

I thought I’d hate it but I don’t. It’s cute. A woman can get away with it as long as she doesn’t have a Rosie cowhead.

  11. spooge says:

    oh no…. why???

  12. Rose says:

I think her hair was MUCH nicer longer.

  13. teehee says:

Brings otu her eyes. I suppose that would bring out anyones eyes LOL cos thers not much else ot look at…. but yes it emphasizes her feminine features and makes her look more beautiful and doe-y, actually 🙂

  14. Lenore says:

It looks fantastic on her. Why do I see a lot of ill-advised women heading in droves to their stylists, clutching this picture, and demanding a Watson?

(Not that I’m gonna do that, of course… no way… *quietly switches on printer*)

  15. Cinderella says:

Very cute on her. Would love to see lots of blonde highlights.

She reminds me of Winona Ryder back in her pixie days.

  16. kelbear says:

She definitely has the face for it. And I actually don’t like the short hair on Carey.

  17. a says:

WHOA! she looks great. better than mulligan. short hair feels great and that cut looks easy to style. it’s a commitment because it’s hell to grow out… but she doesn’t have to worry, it looks great!

  18. Annie says:

She is A-DORABLE in every way!

  19. GrnMtGirl says:

Very Cute…I wish I could pull it off.

  20. texasmom says:

    I love it!

I usually have had my hair shortish, and one time my stylist tried a REALLY short cut on me — she kept telling me it was a Mia, but I swear on me it was much more of a George Clooney! (I did like seeing my ears outlined in my shadow, tho.)

  21. Strawberry says:

I like what Lainey said. “She’s 20… now’s the time to do it!”

The only unfortunate thing about it is that I think this is going to make her keep getting carded in the States for another 10 years, lol.

  22. lucy2 says:

    LOL Texasmom!

I think it looks good on her, but agree not everyone can pull it off – I know I can’t!

  23. electric says:

it’s too bad the way many women cling to their long hair…short hair is liberating and best of all-easy!

  24. Lucinda says:

Twiggy! That’s the first thing I thought. Very adorable!

  25. aenflex says:

    Adorable! Love it!

  26. meme says:

she looks fabulous. emma’s much prettier than carrie mulligan.

  27. Ruby Red Lips says:

She looks gorgeous! Much better than her longer hair

  28. Feebee says:

She has the face for it. Looks fine.

  29. Chickadees4me says:

I wish I could pull this look off also, so jealous! It’s cute 🙂

  30. Dany says:

She looks adorable! I love it!

  31. Iggles says:

    Omg! She looks AMAZING!

She wears it better than Cary Mulligan. She’s more Mia Farrow, less pixie.

It suits her face better than the long hair in my opinion.

  32. Juice in LA says:

She looks soooooo MIA Farrow- Twiggy! good for her. Beautiful!

  33. OhCamille! says:

Adorable! Love it so much. What a pretty girl.

  34. jane16 says:

It looks great on her. Very chic.

  35. serena says:

Oh my God, that shocked me!
She’s so different! The usual Emma-Hermione style is gone and .. woah.. I’m so surprised XD.
By the way this cut compliments her face, and is more more cute and lovely like this.

  36. grisgris says:

It looks adorable on her and she is a great age to experiment with different looks. I agree she looks like Twiggy with this cut and it really makes her eyes pop.

I am chopping all of mine off tonight, but its because my gray is coming in too fast and furious to keep coloring every 6 weeks, especially with a 2 year old and twins on the way! I wish I was going to look this cute – but I am probably going to look like a Grandma.

  37. Bibi says:

IDK why you say *copying*. Jean Seberg had a pixie cut in the 1950s; they’ve been around a long time.

  38. Phie says:

I like the fact it makes her seem grown up. Because of the HP movies, I always see her as a little girl – this hair cut kind of makes me rethink that.

  39. Attagirl says:

She has the perfect face for it, sort of heart-shaped with elfin features.

  40. GatsbyGal says:

TOTALLY Mia Farrow from Rosemary’s Baby…and what an incredible look for her. She really has a fantastic face for it, especially her eyes. Some chicks can pull it off and some can’t, but she definitely can.

  41. vi says:

very cute but call me old fashioned i just prefer long hair on girls

  42. xxodettexx says:

    cute

  43. Livia says:

    Lisbeth Salander…

  44. irena NL says:

It’s been a hot summer, so, yeah!

  45. Riley says:

Now is the time to do it. I did when I was her age but at the time I was copying Winona Ryder. It is what you did in 1996/1997/1998…

  46. Micah says:

    She looks Gorgeous!

The haircut showcases how pretty she is.

She somehow manages to look even more soft and feminine, with the shorter hair.

  47. Dingles says:

I want to hate this girl for being so naturally beautiful. I tried this style when I was 19 and it definitely did NOT work with my face. Don’t regret trying though!

Emma, however, looks stunning. She could have a blue mohawk and look stunning.

  48. original kate says:

lovely. and no, she isn’t copying anyone. pixie cuts have always been in vogue, but not everyone can wear them. wish i could but i can’t because i have big ears. *sigh*

  49. Kdoll says:

I personally would hate myself with that much short hair. I love it long long long. But Emma, as well as everyone else I’ve seen with that sort of style look very pretty.

  50. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I like it. I think short hair looks great on ladies and that pixie must be nice and low-maintenance. A friend of mine has (extremely beautiful) long, long hair, but fuck, she spends like an hour and a half a day on it. I could never be assed to do that even if I had her hair, and I certainly don`t have what it takes to be able to enter the Platinum Card Access Weave Spiral Club. I`ll stick with the Drones.

  51. djork says:

Actually, it’s a Jean Seberg cut (look her up). And Emma looks fantastic with it.

  52. Jillian says:

I love her. She looks beautiful.

I could never chop all my hair off, I have a terrible Rapunzel complex. But if I knew I’d for sure look as good as she does with it, I might.

  53. snowball says:

She looks gorgeous, she’s got the tiny features and bod for it. I’m not so sure Carey Mulligan looks that good with it. She has that eternal smirky face and the color is horrendous.

    Go Emma!

  54. Camille says:

Totally looks like Mia Farrow- for real. I love Emma, I think she is adorable and gorgeous. I like the new hair, she is lucky that she can obviously wear any hair style that she wants as she has the face for it.

  55. Chrissy says:

Wow! She’s beautiful!! Love the short hair on her!!!!!!

  56. Sefa says:

Both! There are way worse people to copy than Carey Mulligan. She can totally pull it off, and it brings all the attention to her long, slim neck and feminine facial features.

  57. Eileen says:

She’s so gorgeous, I love it the hair. It brings out all her facial features.

  58. ligeia says:

my 1st thought when saw the picture was that she looks like a little boy now. i mean yeah, she has nice features and it doesn’t look terrible, but just….ugh. i liked her better with long hair, this doesn’t do it for me. women usually go for short haircuts when they have children or when they get older and hair thins out. 20 is when you can have a long luxurious head of hair, 30 + its going to start slowly going shorter and shorter…i guess she took the plunge way early on that one.

  59. Marianne says:

How she is copying carey Mulligan? Did Carey invent the pixie cut? No.

That being said, i think Emma looks gorgeous as always.

  60. N says:

I love it. I’m with Marianne. I hardly think Carey Mulligan invented the pixie cut…although she does rock it well.

  61. Siren6 says:

    Stunning!

  62. dj says:

She looks gorgeous! I never realized how beautiful she was until now. Her eyes are beautiful and love the little sprinkling of freckles. I think she will get more acting roles. Love it!

  63. Cheekemunkey says:

Anything to draw publicity away from the fact she was replaced on Burberry campaign.

  64. aury says:

i like it!!! she looks really cute.

  65. Jaxx says:

Adorable. Makes her stand out from the crowd of young actresses as unique and again, adorable.

  66. I Choose Me says:

It looks great. SHE looks great!

  67. palomino says:

copying carey mulligan…and generations of women that have rocked the “pixie.”
    she looks awesome.

  68. palomino says:

I think Burberry denied the whole dropping EW thing.

  69. grrrlgrace says:

I don’t LOVE it on her…that being said, it’s probably the best time in her life for her to go for this type of cut. She’s got great bone structure and skin. Not that older people can’t pull off this look either…but again, this is the prime time!

  70. Cheyenne says:

Totally becomes her. She has very fine features and it brings out her eyes.

@grisgris: let the gray come in. It looks very distinguished on short hair. I cut mine as short as Watson’s after I turned 40 and never looked back. And congratulations on your twins!

  71. nel says:

that haircut is adorable! :))) love it.
she has the face to pull it off and it suits her. its a nice change from seeing the weaves hollywood girls.

  72. Richard says:

From ordinary to hottie: PRETTY GIRL, I NEVER NOTICED HER SMOLDERING EYES B4 THIS cut.

  73. Sarah says:

It looks so chic. I had the pixie cut for years and loved it. Beautiful!

  74. NicoleAM says:

I think she looks great! That being said my ears stick out so it’s a no go for me. In any event, just trying to grow out my bangs as been the biggest pain in the ass, so I highly doubt I’d have the patience for that! 🙂

  75. insidescoop says:

    LOVE IT!

  76. p3rp3tu4 says:

    Twiggy!

  77. chessie says:

Stunning. Makes her look very sophisticated instead of little-girlish with the longer hair.

  78. Kel says:

Mia didn’t start the trend – Vidal Sassoon who cut her hair did! And he’d been doing those cuts for a few years in the UK before cutting Mia’s hair.

I think she looks great. Obviously didn’t enjoy keeping her hair long for the Harry Potter films.

  79. Green Is Good says:

Adore the cut, and Emma too!

  80. MSat says:

I had this exact haircut years ago, only I colored my hair fire-engine red. I absolutely loved it! My now-ex husband, however….not so much. But it was so liberating to just walk out of the shower and boom – hair done! Sigh. I miss that.

  81. Kitten says:

Love it. Mia Farrow was the first thing I thought.

  82. Green Is Good says:

I wish I could sport a cute look like this!

  83. Faye says:

She rocks it. I love her!

  84. Patrice says:

I think she looks beautiful! And good for her for not feeling like her femininity/looks are defined by long hair like some women (unfortunately) do : )

  85. Bee says:

I love this haircut on her! She looks like she should be strolling the streets of Paris with Jean-Luc Godard following her with his camera. Jean Seberg would be proud. C’est magnifique.

  86. SolitaryAngel says:

LOVE IT! She’s beautiful. Now her eyes dominate her face, before her hair covered her face up.

  87. jsan says:

    Just gorgeous!!

Best age to do it, I did it too around 21 and loved it.

  88. gg says:

Love her, but — hideous haircut! The Mia Farrow do looks awful on pretty much everybody, including Mia. She needs longer bangs badly. I have the same problem – forehead too large for 1/2-inch long bangs. Longer bangs and it’ll look cute. I bet 100 bucks she lets it grow longer after this and won’t keep it this short.

  89. Kate says:

Wow she looks great!!! Adore it!

  90. May says:

it sure looks weird as hell… i dont like that hairstyle at all

  91. I love Emma Watson and Carey Mulligan. I think they both look good in any hairstyle they’re on.
