Julianna Margulies: Women don’t cheat as much because we’re tired

septcover-lo

Julianna Margulies is the September cover girl for Redbook, to promote her hit CBS show, The Good Wife. I love the way they styled her for the cover! On someone else, it might a somewhat trashy look, what with the tube-top/bustier and what appears to be mall hair, but Julianna is so rarely styled in such a clean, normal way, so this is exceptional. Much better than the overworked corpsey styling that W Magazine used earlier this year.

Anyway, Julianna continues to give great interviews – she’s a really cool woman, in my opinion, and she rides the line between being sassy and just being bluntly honest. It’s a great combo. The Redbook slideshow is here, and here are some excerpts from the interview:

On why we don’t see more women in the news as cheaters: “The answer is simple: We are tired! With all of the things we do in our lives, what woman has the time to fit in an affair?”

On cheating: “I think that when you have gotten things out of your system, you are less tempted by distractions. My only temptations now are chocolate and martinis. I think the hardest thing about cheating would not be the physical act; it would be the trust you break. If you decide to take that person back, you have to make a deal to trust again. I’m very happy with where my life is, but for someone like Alicia, whose husband has jumped in bed with a sexpot, the temptation of being sexually desirable is huge.”

On the time when she felt like a great wife: “There was one perfect day recently when I got up at 5:30 with the baby, went to work at 6:30 for 12 hours, grocery shopped, cooked dinner, and then later, my husband and I made love. We both looked at each other that night and said, “This day will never happen again!”

On how her TV career began: “ER was my breakout role. I auditioned on a whim. When I got that part, my character was originally supposed to die. At one point George Clooney called me and said, “I think you are going to live.” And I was on the show for six seasons.”

What’s worse: Knowing that you’ve been cheated on or not knowing?
“Knowing. I’m a believer in “Ignorance is bliss.”

What’s worse: Not sleeping for a day or not talking for a day?
“Not sleeping for a day. I think the whole world should try not talking for a day.”

I think they asked so many questions about infidelity because she’s on a show that deals with that issue, plus Redbook seems to be working on some kind of theme. Eh. Whatever. I love her. And I don’t even watch her show! I should start, right? Who watches it? Is it any good? Does Chris Noth appear on every episode?

Also: damn, her husband is cute!

I do watch it the show, yes it is good. Chris Noth started appearing more towards the end of the season. With the way the season ended, there might be more of him. Also, the awesome Alan Cummings has been promoted to regular, so that is another reason to be stoked.

  2. meg says:

I love that she looks natural. Women get lines in their foreheads?? who knew?!

  3. your momma says:

women seem to be lomabsted more for cheating because theres this BS in the media that men want to “spread their seed” so when men cheat some people are like “oh, its inevitable” whereas women are not supposed to be interested in sex at all (which of course is BS too) either way cheating is wrong though the way hollywierd goes you would’nt think it.

  4. Katalina says:

The show is absolutely fantastic, you should definitely watch. Her character is so well-written. As @Tiffany said, Noth is now on every day, Cummings is FANTASTIC, and I love Will. I am definitely Team Will.

  5. pookie says:

LOVE the show. Have watched every episode. Well written and I think it’s a terrific role for Julianna. I’ve missed her since ER and she is a great TV/drama actress.

  6. original kate says:

i like her, and always thought she was so pretty. nice to see she is still recognizable!

  7. Lentil says:

You should definitely watch it! For Josh Charles, if nothing else 🙂

  8. Aqua says:

You should watch it, it’s a great show! very well written and very interesting characters.

  9. Lexie says:

what channel is it on? time/day?

  10. Bunny says:

She is so beautiful, and a terrific actress. I really like the character on her show, I wish there were more like her on TV.

  11. Strawberry says:

Lexie: It’s on CBS. I just moved to the UK, and I miss it already. I love the show, my mom loves it too (mainly for Chris Noth). Missed the season finale — did she and Will ever end up hooking up?

  12. hmm says:

Why is wavy hair considered “mall hair?” Some of us do have thick, wavy hair naturally…it’s a refreshing change to feel like we don’t have to shellac it down so people who have thin, straight hair don’t think we’re trashy. 🙁

  13. Oi says:

what does mall hair mean? A haircut you got at the mall?

  14. Heaven-bound says:

    Her husband is HOT!!!

  15. Kazoo81 says:

wavy hair doesn’t equal mall hair.

big (and usually very teased) hair equals mall hair.

  16. Kaiser says:

Honestly, I didn’t mean to offend curly or wavy-haired lasses with my “mall hair” statement. I think I was pulled in by the overall styling, which, to me, is very “Long Island outlet mall”. That being said, she looks gorge.

  17. serena says:

I loved her since ER, she’s interesting to read and a different kind of beauty.

  18. Delta Juliet says:

I love the picture on the cover and what an attractive couple they are!

As far as the “too tired” comment…I totally agree.

  19. fyn says:

    @ 12 hmm

I like her hair (I have short fine hair, which by the way I do not “shellac” & never think badly of anyone who has better hair than myself but have experienced too often people who think I am a lesbian because my hair is short and they most often are persons with long flowing beautiful locks (and/or male) whom obviously take their hair for granted and put out an attitude that suggests they are prettier or more feminine simply because they have long hair, you need to “check” your attitude and get off the defense bus) she (Julia) is pretty but maybe she needs some extra vitamins, more exercise possibly MORE sex, less sugar and less alcohol maybe it will energize her, ( maybe she doesn’t like sex). Alcohol, cigarettes and sun are sure “agers” and energy robbers. These rich people aren’t very smart.

  20. Jeri says:

I watch the show & I watch it again in reruns & remain interested each time. I was not a fan of her in ER (didn’t watch it then) but I’m a fan for sure now.

  21. hmm says:

fyn, no need to be unkind. I simply meant some people with wavy (not curly, not straight) hair try to force it to be a way it’s not–THEY shellac it to look like it conforms more. I’ve actually been told my hair “must have fit in better in the 80’s” because of the way it looks naturally. I spent years ironing my hair to calm it and then used a flatiron for forever in order to avoid people thinking I had “big hair.” I wear my hair longer in order to weigh it down and not look like an atomic mushroom. My comment was not intended to insult anyone, and I wish actresses like Nicole Kidman and Julianna Margulies would wear their natural waves more often.

  22. JustBe says:

I don’t get to watch the show every week, but when I do catch it, I’m not disappointed. I like how the character struggles with the issue of infidelity in her marriage, newly becoming the primary caretaker and sole breadwinner, jailed spouse, overbearing mother-in-law and demanding job. I also like that even when she considered having a relationship/affair outside of her marriage with Will she laid down the law off the bat, like ‘this is who I am and this is my life currently, can you really handle this? I love how the show tries to portray how all that she’s carrying around affects her.

I have to agree with Julianna’s comment about women and affairs. I think it’s especially apt when you work full-time and are the primary caretaker of young children, when the heck do you have time for an affair? Not to mention, where would you find a man who is attractive and can fulfill you emotionally and physically in the short bursts of time that you would likely have together and is not likely to get on your nerves like the man you already have?

But, I disagree with her comment about ‘ignorance is bliss’. I want to know so that I have the power to see who you really are (as far as your faults) and whether I want to stay.

  23. fyn says:

    @ Hmm 21

Didn’t mean to sound unkind, maybe I ought to check which bus I’m riding on, eh! Honestly, I’m sure if I saw your hair I would love it. I am a person who thinks we women look our best with less make-up and at ease with ourselves, whatever that means for the individual. Have a happy day!

  24. notgaga says:

I started watching after a friend recommended this show and it’s definitely one to add to your schedule. I love the way Marguiles’ character slowly developed over the course of the season and Alan Cummings is AWESOME as a Chicago “fixer.”

@19 fyn, perhaps you are the one in need of attitude adjustment as you managed to bitch out both Margulies and #12? I too have curly/wavy hair and like it when celebrities show their natural curl rather than straightening the personality out of their hair to keep up with current fashion.

  25. Liana says:

I have curly hair – not ubercurly, but really wavy, and I straighten it sometimes, and leave it all bedheady other times.

I like Julianna and I really like her show. I mean, Alan Cumming and Titus Welliver on the same screen… go world!

  26. Lila says:

The Good Wife is fantastic. I, too, watch it and watch the reruns and I am riveted every moment. The characters are fascinating, the writing terrific, the acting top notch. Julianna’s portrayal of her character is so subtle. The whole thing is addicting. Archie Panjabi is amazing. Can’t take my eyes off her. It’s on Tuesday nights at 9 (Pacific time)

  27. excuse me says:

Julianna is one of my fave actresses. My goodness this woman is gorgeous! What a beautiful couple.

  28. keyra says:

    pretty3x……..

  29. Kiska says:

She’s glorious. I love the show. Very strong story line and the actors are all top notch: Josh Charles, Christine Baranski, Archie Panjabi (my personal fav) and Alan Cummings.
Ridley Scott is one of the executive producers on the show.
I highly recommend watching this show. It is one of the best dramas I’ve seen in a long time.

  30. canadianchick says:

She’s so cool, I love Christine Baranski on the Good Wife also. And yes, Team Will.

  31. Truthzbetta says:

Does Redbook always do less photoshopping than other mags like this?

Her eyes look so much better with the natural smile creases underneath. The smile so much more emphasized by the smiling cheek folds. You can see her neck moving too. Refreshingly gorg.

So much better than the strange 14 year old plastic girl treatment they do on Demi and Madonna.

Also, the natural shot beneath the mag shot isn’t the shocker it is with the other ladies when you see what they really look like.

  32. trashaddict says:

I love that she said that! Too damn tired is definitely it for me. Never been tempted to stray but if my SO had paranoid suspicions, that would be my first defense.

  33. Katie says:

You should absolutely watch the show. I was skeptical about it b/c I have no interest in the real life political cheating scandals, but there is so much more to the show then that. I gave it a chance b/c I love her and Noth and it’s really, really great. Many great actors on it, many great roles. Noth is in pretty much every episode but I think he technically a “special guest star” and there are a couple of eps where he’s barely in it, then there will be some where he’s a major part of the ep. But the whole show is really great. Truly, watch it!

  34. Liana says:

Again I say: Titus Welliver. Yum.

  35. רמי says:

Whoa this blog is magnificent i love reading your articles. Keep up the great work! You know, many people are looking around for this information, you could aid them greatly.
