Naomi Campbell: I had “no motive” to lie about the blood diamonds

Little Miss “This War Crimes Tribunal Is Such an Inconvenience” Naomi Campbell is trying to play the media following her disastrous testimony at Charles Taylor’s war crimes trial at The Hague last week. Many – including me – pointed out the contradictions in Naomi Campbell’s testimony, and the controversy was further fueled this week when Mia Farrow testified and basically discredited several key parts of Naomi’s story as to how she came to possess several blood diamonds. Also making an appearance was Carole White, Naomi’s former manager, who is currently suing Naomi for being a C-U-Next-Tuesday. Anyway, long story short, Naomi released a statement on Wednesday where she’s basically trying to act like she’s eating sh-t, but really she’s just being a lying bitch. Same old, same old.

Naomi Campbell, the model, says she has “nothing to gain” from lying during her evidence to the war crimes trial of Charles Taylor, the former Liberian leader.

Miss Campbell, who could face charges for possessing “illegal” uncut diamonds which she later handed over to the head of one of former South African leader Nelson Mandela’s charities, said she had “no motive”.

“I am a black woman who has and will always support good causes especially relating to Africa.”

She added: “I’ve never taken any of the jobs offered to me, over my 25 years as a model, from companies that were for apartheid in South Africa.”

A statement from her spokesman later said Miss Campbell was a “long time supporter of charity work in Africa” and had helped raise “considerable sums”.

The model’s role in the affair is being examined along with all those who came into contact with the three uncut diamonds which are now in police custody.

Possession of an uncut diamond is a criminal offence in South Africa with penalties ranging from a hefty fine to ten years imprisonment for repeat offenders.

Campbell gave evidence at the war crimes tribunal of former Liberian leader Charles Taylor last week in which she said she was given the “dirty-looking pebbles” by two men who knocked on her door in the middle of the night following a dinner in Pretoria hosted by Mr Mandela.

She said she did not know where the stones came from, but handed them to Jeremy Ractliffe, the then head of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the following day suggesting he “make sure children benefit from them”.

He has since admitted that he had kept the diamonds – which he suspected might be illegal – hidden in a safe ever since to protect the reputations of Campbell and Mr Mandela.

The prosecution in Mr Taylor’s war crimes tribunal at The Hague allege that the diamonds given to Campbell came from the Liberian leader and were “blood diamonds”, which he traded to fund a brutal war carried out by insurgents in Liberia’s neighbouring Sierra Leone. They suspect that when he attended the dinner with Campbell on September 25, 1997, he was in South Africa to arrange an arms shipment, in return for diamonds, that arrived to fuel the Sierra Leone conflict in October 1997, just days later.

Musa Zondi, the spokesman for South Africa’s elite Hawks criminal investigation unit which collected the diamonds from Mr Ractliffe’s home last week, said detectives were looking at all those who came into contact with the uncut diamonds, including Campbell, and would seek to question all parties involved.

He said that tests on the diamonds had failed to confirm whether they were, as is suspected, from Sierra Leone and police would now seek to establish their origin through its own investigations. Police are also expected to look at whether the parties who had contact with the diamonds knew that possessing them was illegal when considering possible charges.

“We are investigating an offence and who might have committed it,” he said. “We need all the facts and can’t make the determination without them. The decision on who to prosecute, that’s the job of the prosecuting authority. All we can do is to get all the facts and offer our conclusion.”

Giving evidence at The Hague yesterday, Campbell’s former agent Carole White said she stood by her evidence that she heard Mr Taylor tell the 40-year-old model that he would give her a gift of diamonds after the two spent the evening flirting.

She was challenged by Mr Taylor’s defence lawyer Courtenay Griffiths QC that she had made up the allegation that Campbell had accepted diamonds knowing they were from Mr Taylor because of a lawsuit involving the model over a broken perfume promotion contract that had been worth £2 million over the last decade.

“Your account is a complete pack of lies. You made it up in order to assist in your lawsuit against Miss Campbell. Put bluntly, for you this is all about money,” Mr Griffiths told Miss White, the founder of the London-based Premier model agency.

“It has absolutely nothing to do with my business argument with Naomi Campbell. This not about money this is about a very serious matter,” she replied.

Mr Taylor, Liberia’s former president, is the first African leader to face a war crimes trial, and indicted with 11 charges including murder, rape and sexual slavery – all of which he denies. The case continues.

[From The Telegraph]

The question of why Naomi is lying has bothered me as well. I think she’s just gotten so used to lying about her actions (“No, I did not hit her in the face with my phone.”) that she’s just in the groove of it. She didn’t want to testify at the trial, and she didn’t want to disrupt her life for anything not involving beach holidays and assaulting peasants. Basically, she lied because she could, because she’s an entitled bitch.

As for Naomi’s previous testimony, on the record, that her appearance was inconvenient for her – her exact words: “Well, I didn’t really want to be here. I was made to be here. So, obviously I’m just like wanting to get this over with and get on with my life. This is a big inconvenience for me.” So her “advisors” released this statement yesterday: “Campbell accepts the use of the word ‘inconvenient’ was a poor choice but it was made off the cuff and taken massively out of context. It was in relation to a nonsensical question as to whether or not she was nervous appearing in court. Campbell had explained that she had fears for her family having read about Taylor’s alleged crimes on the internet, hence her initial reticence in appearing.” Oh, those poor advisors. They couldn’t even convince Naomi to explain her wording herself! That’s bad.

  1. This whole trial of Naomi Campbell really deflects from the real issues, and the real questions that should be asked. She has become a scapegoat for the media because it sells newspapers… Why is no one asking, for example, why was Nelson Mandela at a dinner party with an evil dictator?

  2. J says:

She tried to hint that she feared for the life of her family after she heard about this trial.

I basically believe this woman just doesn’t care about anyone. She believes being a celebrity can be above the law — and managed to do so many times. Obviously if she chose to lie (which the whole world more or less believes so), it’s because she misjudged that by doing so, she can get herself out of the trial sooner. After all, the whole thing is a little “inconvnient” for her, you know.

PS. at the trial, she looks like having too much botox.

  3. Shay says:

Many of these supposed African charities are so corrupt. It really raises questions about the integrity of the supposed ‘saints’ we are told about. Now why would Nelson Mandela even invite Charles Taylor to a dinner party?
Honestly, it’s all so convoluted and corrupt and it makes me sick, as does Naomi, but she is the small fish.

  4. Bella Mosley says:

Namomi Campbell who? What exacty is her purpose? She’s bad news all round.

  5. bros says:

who gives a crap about this trick and a couple blood diamonds? I feel like all the coverage is about her, and its deflecting the attention away from that shithead Taylor-this diamond thing is small potatoes compared to the rest of the atrocities and its like all we are hearing about is this twatty trixie and her dirty stones and whether she lied or not. she is taking up too much news space.

  6. Andrea-2 says:

I don’t get it-if she handed over the diamonds to a charity the next day (which is verified in this article) why is she on trial? It’s not her fault someone handed them to her.

Oh, and by the way, I can’t stand Naomi Campbell, but that shouldn’t cloud judgement as to whether or not she deserves jail time.

  7. gabs says:

Iughh… dont understand why she is so important to the case anyway. Dont they have more on this guy? Yeah Naomi is EVIL but the focus is entirely on her and some diamonds instead of all the other crimes. Yeah wtf was taylor doing at a mandela dinner then?

PS- Her rich Russian bf is a stud though. Good catch naomi

  8. mtngirl says:

Oh please, why wouldn’t Naomi lie, isn’t that one of her many talents? She doesn’t want to rock the boat, so to speak…

  9. bros says:

her rich russian BF is married, so I dont know how much of a catch he is. she really has no qualms, and NO shame. great legs though.

  10. BlackMamba says:

I am in no shape or form a Naomi fan but I don’t understand why people are so angry at her regarding a GIFT that she received and GAVE TO CHARITY THE NEXT DAY. I know every body hates her but I don’t see what she did wrong here.

  11. marge says:

    @BlackMamba
becasue the law requires her to hand any uncounted diamond(s) she was given to the police, not the charity, nor could they benefit from them also. Regulations about diamond trade are very tight.

  12. mln says:

She is a witness in a trail against Charles Taylor.
She is the only person who can prove that this man in fact had possesion of Blood diamonds.
So in effect refusing to state for certain in court that Charles Taylor gave her the diamonds is allowing a man who is responsible for crimes against humanity to get off scot free.

  13. jeane says:

    @ Mark Sutherland

Yes, I’ve been wondering about that as well.

And Nelson Mandela and Campbell are supposedly “good friends.” WTF Mandela? You’d think he has better things to do than hang out with evil dictators and spoiled supermodels.

  14. AMS511 says:

i hate her. i tried to write a comment about how f-d up i thought the whole deal was & it was too long & crazy.

i just hate her. go away. africa doesn’t need you.

  15. AMS511 says:

she didn’t DONATE THEM TO CHARITY-that requires paperwork.

she GAVE them to a guy that ran a charity…he kept them in a personal safe. ILLEGAL-b/c the diamonds were not their property to begin with…

    GOD I HATE HER!

  16. Victoria says:

“I am a black woman who has and will always support good causes especially relating to Africa.” So now she’s black? I do recall a time when she would scream at people “Im not black Im white!” I guess it depends on her mooooooood.

  17. OhCamille! says:

    @Mark Sutherland:
you posted exactly what I thought.
What is Nelson Mandela doing in the company of this man? THAT is the story, IMO.

  18. Oenix says:

All in all, from the very beginning, she should have said that she was given what looks like “precious stones” that may or may not have come from Taylor. Then play dumb – in her case it would not have been an act – about how much she knew about him and the significance of those “dirty pebbles”. Everyone, Mia Farrow included, would have rightly concluded, “How much more can one possibly expect from a SuperMODEL?”. Her response would have been consistent with their image…..airhead… shallow… socially/politically irresponsible… self-absorbed… etcetera……

Perhaps people in her industry should stick to attending industry-related events and stay out of all others. Supermodel by definition means CLUELESS about anything other than fashion, style, make up and the likes.

How and why would Naomi’s kind know or care to educate themselves about international laws and regulations regarding anything, least of all in regards to their favorite accessory? Especially when it arrived as an unsolicited GIFT?

How and why would we expect Naomi’s kind to know about the dynamics and politics of foreign countries (I doubt she is familiar with those of her own)?

When we see pictures of the likes of Naomi, do we really think they are much more than eye candy? Human accessories? Do we really believe they are there because of their intellect?

Most of them are as shallow as they look, then why would we expect Naomi to spend a sleepless night wondering about moral ethics and integrity in accepting a gift from a dubious source?

Frankly, we give her way too much credit. It’s like expecting a cheerleader to make intelligent conversation about the merit of a doctoral dissertation just because she attends the same school as the candidate.

  19. Green Is Good says:

“Campbell had explained that she had fears for her family having read about Taylor’s alleged crimes on the internet, hence her initial reticence in appearing.”
    *************************************

That is BS right there. She and her family are from England. What danger could they possibly be in from an Ex-South African dictator who’s now in custody? Lame excuse.

  20. It’s clear why she would lie, “Miss Campbell… could face charges for possessing “illegal” uncut diamonds.”

I think that says it all.

  21. Shay says:

She probably doesn’t want the world to know that she ‘serviced’ the dictator and her current BF probably ‘pays’ for her services as well.

  22. Shadowd says:

I see a lot of people hating, but before we go to far, let us shine a little light in the dark corners.

Did she receive the diamonds from Charles Taylor, the former Liberian leader, I believe she did, so why is she trying to hide this fact? Well Charles Taylor is a very scary person, let us review a little of who he is.

Charles Taylor was trained as a guerilla fighter, rose up the ranks to become a leader, initiated the First Liberian Civil War, which ended with Samuel Doe (the current leader at the time) being tortured and executed by Prince Johnson (Once a senior commando of Taylor, who broke away and formed his own faction). He was then elected President, Taylor’s victory has been widely attributed to the belief that he would resume the war if he lost.

During his term he was accused of both war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Sierra Leone Civil War, and was finally ousted from power during the Second Liberian Civil War.

This is not a nice person, this is a person who if you anger, will have you tortured before killing you. So yes I can see her trying to avoid naming him of her fear.

As for people complaining of Mandela having Charles at his table for a dinner, do not forget Charles Taylor was the 22 President of Liberia, a more important question is why was American televangelist Pat Robertson not charged (see below).

According to a 2 June 1999, article in The Virginian-Pilot,[8] Taylor had extensive business dealings with American televangelist Pat Robertson during the civil war. According to two Operation Blessing pilots who reported this incident to the Commonwealth of Virginia for investigation in 1994, Robertson used his Operation Blessing planes to haul diamond-mining equipment to his new mines in Liberia, despite the fact that Robertson was telling his 700 Club viewers that the planes were sending relief supplies to the victims of the genocide in Rwanda. The subsequent investigation by the Commonwealth of Virginia concluded that Robertson diverted his ministry’s donations to the Liberian diamond-mining operation, but Attorney General of Virginia Mark Earley blocked any potential prosecution against Robertson, as the relief supplies were also sent

“Header: Naomi being inconvenienced on a yacht on July 5, 2010.”

am I the only one who noticed the brilliant caption?

    Kudos, Kaiser.

  24. Kaiser says:

    Praise- thanks! *bows*

  25. whitedaisy says:

Mia Farrow testified that Campbell excitedly told her the next morning that she received an enormous diamond during the night.
It makes one wonder whether Naomi kept a rather large diamond and gave the small ones to the charity, doesn’t it?

  26. MooBoo says:

    she is lying because:
    a) she could go to jail for at least 5 years for handling the ‘dirty pebbles’ in the first place
    b) taylor’s hoods could come after her
    c) it makes Mandela look v bad that those diamonds ended up anywhere near him and she is trying to protect him by underplaying the fact that they are diamonds.

  27. Colleen says:

People should not assume that Mandela invited Taylor. Farrow testified that Mandela’s wife said that she warned her not to have her family’s picture taken the with him and that he had crashed the party.

When it comes to Naomi Campbell, I’m not sure why the author doesn’t see a good motive for her to lie. Anyone would be nervous about testifying against such a horrible person for fear of retaliation. Not saying she she shouldn’t do it, but that is beside the point

  28. bagladey says:

Naomi Campbell is lying, and I’d love to see the large diamond(s)that she kept for herself. I wonder if she’s had it cut and polished yet, and whether or not it’s been set; because not for one moment do I believe that she was so stupid that she did not think that there had to be profound significance to those “dirty little stones” for TWO (2) men to awaken her in the middle of the night to deliver them, because despite all of her projected naivete Naomi Campbell is a worldly super model who knows about diamonds.

  29. Feebee says:

Well I think she has a big motive to lie. Like maybe not wanting to get on this horrible man’s bad side?

However I don’t think Naomi needs a motive to lie about anything. She just does… about lots of things. It’s second nature to her, I don’t even think it’s a conscience effort now.

  30. Iggles says:

    Thanks Shadowd and MooBoo.

I feel the Naomi hate has blinded a lot of folks of the precarious situation she is now in. Though it’s true that made her own bed..

  31. MissyA says:

Thanks for shedding some light on the Nelson Mandela issue Shadowd and Colleen. That little tick was rolling around in my head since this story broke.

  32. hatsumomo says:

Thanks Shadowd for posting the big things that really matter! Everyone is just in a tizzy over this because of Naomi, not because people are interested in bloody dictators and war crimes.

  33. Kitten says:

I hate to say it but if Naomi’s bad wig draws attention to an important matter then maybe it’s a small silver lining. FYI, I learned more from Shadowd’s post then from googling.

  34. GatsbyGal says:

Of course Naomi Campbell lied, and she lied because a) she can, b) she wants to get on with her life, and c) she doesn’t want to admit that this guy paid her diamonds for sexual favors.

If she’s telling the truth, you then would have to wonder why Mia Farrow would lie? Mia Farrow wouldn’t lie. I don’t think she likes Naomi very much, but I can’t see Mia lying to a war crimes tribunal because of it.

  35. jr says:

paid for sexual favors??? now she is a prostitute? unreal, and soooo racist.who would go straight to the police in South Africa if someone gave them dirty diamonds in the middle of the night? would you not be scared too?!!!! so she gave them to someone and told them to use it for CHARITY!! so what if there needed to be paperwork? her intention was to give them away…you acting as if she washed them and kept them for herself all these years!!!!

  36. GatsbyGal says:

@Jr – Woah woah, racist?! What I said was not racist. I made the comment I did because she’s a trashy model. YOU made the comment YOU did because she’s black. I’m pretty sure that makes YOU racist.

  37. Truthzbetta says:

Yeah, Jr. You’re the one bringing up her race, which does make you the racist.

Didn’t even occur to Gatsbygal to separate humans along those lines purely. She’s just pointing out Naomi’s trashy inside and out, proved by many of her actions and nothing more so kindly step off a cliff with your nastiness.

  38. gg says:

I feel sorry for her family being associated with this lying, violent, stupid cow. Lying to her is like breathing.

  39. Peter says:

Well, I’ve never seen so a fucking and decadent bitch like naomi! What a shame for the fashion industry, what a shame of their race!
