Halle Berry looks Cleopatra-esque for Vogue Mag’s September issue

vogue

I’d read that Halle Berry was going to make her only her second appearance ever on the cover of Vogue, this time for the September issue, and here it is! Um… her hair, right? Otherwise, it’s a gorgeous shot, done by Mario Testino, of course. Okay, maybe the whole thing is a little Cleopatra, but still: YAY. I’m so happy it’s not someone like Sienna Miller or Keira Knightley. USA Today had some exclusive excerpts from Halle’s interview:

When you’re Halle Berry, you talk when you want to talk. And after a long-standing silence, the Academy Award-winning actress has opened up to writer Jonathan Van Meter in the September issue of Vogue (on newsstands nationwide Aug. 24). Berry, 43, chats about being a mom to 2-year-old daughter Nahla and her split with Nahla’s father, Gabriel Aubry. USA TODAY highlights Berry’s best bits.

On why she hasn’t given a lengthy interview in three years: “I was burned-out with having other people tell the story about me they wanted to tell. I told my publicist, ‘I’m not going to talk anymore. I’m just going to live my life and be who I am.’ ”

Why she’s talking now: “What (being on the cover of the September Vogue) means for a woman of color and what that means in the fashion world, what that means to pop culture, there was no way I could say, ‘No, I’m not going to be on the biggest issue of the year.’ ”

On her breakup with Aubry: “It’s just that you realize you are not meant to go the distance with everybody. … We were meant to bring this amazing little person into the world. And I think that’s why we came together. And because of that, we are going to be together forever, all three of us.”

Does her no-more-marriage stance still stand? “Yes. I’m not done with love, but I refuse to settle. I am a hopeless romantic. And I won’t stop till I get it right. … I don’t think I’m unlike a lot of people. I am just someone who is trying to find that mate, and I think it’s a really hard thing to do. And I’m not willing to stay somewhere where I am really not happy. And I am not willing to pretend I am for the kid’s sake or so that I don’t have to go through another public humiliation.”

Why she thinks ‘nature has got it all wrong’: “When you are younger, it should be harder to get pregnant, and as you get older, it should be easier. When you are so ready, you can’t do it to save your life. And when you are 21, you are so not ready, but you are ripe as could be. The eggs should become more developed the older you get, not die slowly from the day you’re born. That’s one thing God got wrong.”

On asking Nahla to say Berry’s name in case she ever got lost: “She thought about it for a second, and finally she said, ‘Halle Blueberries!’ Blueberries are her favorite fruit. … I’m just glad she didn’t say ‘Halle Blackberry.’ ”

On being comfortable with her sexuality: “That comes with age … I’ve been slowly getting there. If the world wouldn’t persecute me, I’d take nude pictures every day of the week.”

On the so-called Oscar curse: “People win Oscars, and then it seems like they fall off the planet. And that’s partly because a huge expectation walks in the room and sits right down on top of your head. The moment I won the Oscar, I felt the teardown the very next day. I thought, if I’m going down, I’m going down taking chances and daring to risk. Hence …Catwoman.”

On the biggest misconception people have about her: “That I am this brooding, twisted, lovesick person who just can’t get it right in life. Every story about me is so heavy and dramatic. That’s not how I do life. But that’s the impression people have, and that’s what keeps getting reiterated. As if I’m still stuck in all the muck of the past. And I am so not.”

[From USA Today]

Who the f-ck is persecuting Halle for taking nude photos?!? Isn’t that an issue that every man and woman can agree on? That there should be more naked photos of Halle in general? Regarding her comments on Gabriel and love and all… I actually like what she said. I still think she’s “f-cked up about men” (my mom’s words), but I also think she’s grown a lot and she’s taken the time to examine herself and how she really feels about relationships and all. My only quibble is that I wouldn’t call her a “romantic”. I think she sounds very jaded and a touch pessimistic. But you know what they say about pessimism – it’s just optimism that got disappointed.

Meh. It’s interesting that she felt the need to address the “perception” (ahem) that we all have of her as a loser in love; Hey Halle! We’ve seen the baby-daddy, you ARE a loser! I expect we’ll see alot of her as it gets closer to her next movie coming out.

  2. RHONYC says:

that nahla is the spittin’ image of aubry. she is too darling!

“I’m just glad she didn’t say ‘Halle Blackberry.’”

yeah…i’d say miss halle’s still got some issues.

    *eyeroll*

p.s.- there are masses of women that will ‘settle’ for her ex.

    on your mark…get set…GO! 🙂

  3. meme says:

she still strikes me a diva beeyotch.

  4. K-MAC says:

you never know what goes on behind closed doors…..her ex maybe hot, but if they had a child together and still walked away from one another then something is very wrong….at least they did not get married for the sake of the child. That kid will have to happier parents now.

BTW, Halle Berry ought to tel her ‘haters’ to e’ff off. As a matter of fact, why is she even listening to them? Who cares, it’s her life not theirs….

  5. meme says:

Excuse me but haven’t Naomi Campbell, Veronica Webb, Iman and the African model with the really round face been on the cover of Vogue at one time or another? Halle’s not breaking any ground here.

  6. lena says:

“Who the f-ck is persecuting Halle for taking nude photos?!?”

The same people that bashed her for getting nude in Monster’s Ball…she got a lot of hate for that

  7. mln says:

Halle doesn’t have the best track record with men, so it is very possible that he is a real jerk but if he isn’t she should just work it out because he is so damn hot.

  8. Andrea-2 says:

She seems okay to me. I like her point about how your eggs should work better when you’re older. It kinda makes sense when you think about it.
No one says Jack Nicholson is “lonely” or “unable to find love” or “desperate” because he’s single and playing the field. It’s funny how we still feel women have to be part of a couple to be complete.

  9. meme says:

@lena, she got a lot of hate for doing nudity because she insisted she would never ever do it. And it was for that crapfest Swordfish where she first went topless then came that other awful movie Monster’s Ball

  10. nycmom10024 says:

I think the cover look is channelling Louise Brooks.

    http://www.zimbio.com/Louise+Brooks/articles/VXSkazbhU6A/Louise+Brooks+Hair+Icon

Nonetheless Halle is beautiful, her daughter grows more adorable with each picture. And I could probably waste many minutes staring at Aubry. (Thanks for yesterday’s pics)

  11. nycmom10024 says:

It is a big deal that she is on the cover of the September issue of Vogue.
Apparently, Naomi was the last African American woman on a September issue back in 1989. The September issue is considered the big one for all the fall fashions and is often the thickest for most fashion mags.

  12. Praise St. Angie! says:

oh, Nahla is so friggin’ cute.

  13. canadianchick says:

    Awww Nahla is so sweet.

I tried to watch Swordfish the other day-lamefest, I turned it off mid-way.

  14. lena says:

well meme, she’s allowed to change her mind… In my opinion she got more hate for monster’s ball cause she showed everything and simulated sex with a white man. I clearly remember people saying things like “-well it took her to get naked with a white man to win that oscar” comments

It’s always wonderful when women of color are featured on the cover of magazines…especially a well known one

  15. alex says:

just because a man is gorgeous does not mean that he is not a jerk

  16. Cinderella says:

Halle sure takes a pretty picture.

  17. Zelda says:

I like the hair. It’s nice to see a change from her tired pixie.

  18. meme says:

@lena – of course she’s allowed to change her mind. i didn’t criticize her for getting naked but she sure didn’t deserve an oscar for that crapfest monster’s ball IMHO. at this point, i doubt anyone cares if she gets naked or not. she needs to get over herself.

  19. skibunny says:

I thought she was great in Monster’s Ball and deserved to win the academy award. I find her beautiful and her daughter is adorable.
At least she sounds honest and interesting in this interview versus the crap Angelina Jolie spews out. I’m using her as one example….there are others as well.

  20. Katie says:

    Nahla is stunning.

  21. celandine says:

“Halle doesn’t have the best track record with men, so it is very possible that he is a real jerk”.

Or that SHE’s impossible to live with! Just because she’s pretty doesn’t mean she’s nice…

  22. Bite me says:

Another one with dadddy issues, you are approching mddle age Halle is time to seek some professional help for ur daghter sake nut bag

  23. Ms_Fu says:

Thanks celadine for saying that. If we give some credence to anonymous sources that leaked info around the time they broke up,Aubry left partially because Halle made him feel bad about earning less than her ( a ‘disappointing’ $700K a year). I personally think her experiences with men have hardened her.Or perhaps she’s a bitch who chooses assholes. I don’t know.

  24. Siren6 says:

That is one gorgeous little girl!

  25. TQB says:

@Ms. Fu, actually, the rumors I read everywhere were that he wanted to chase some tail his own age. So if you combine your gossip with my gossip you get the average breakdown of a relationship – it happens for many reasons and very rarely is only one person to blame.

I’m shocked to see so much hate. She’s beautiful, her daughter is beautiful and she has nothing but lovely things to say about her daughter’s father (who, FTR, is also beautiful).

  26. Kazoo81 says:

    god, that bitch is beautiful.

her daughter looks to have gotten the best features from both parents.

  27. original kate says:

i agree with nycmom – i think halle is paying homage to louise brooks on the cover. i like it, but halle could be bald and wearing a burlap sack and still be gorgeous, and evidently her daughter is going to be the same. so not fair *sigh*

  28. Iggles says:

    @ nycmom10024:
It is a big deal that she is on the cover of the September issue of Vogue.
Apparently, Naomi was the last African American woman on a September issue back in 1989.

Naomi Campbell is British, not American.

Anyway, I think Halle looks great on the cover (though I think she has a ton of issues with men). Her daughter is beautiful!

  29. Eden says:

    @TQB
    Well said…

Halle should always wear her hair in a pixie type cut, my lord that woman is gorgeous and needs to show as much of her face as possible.

Eh, I can’t judge her for taking longer than society accepts to work her shit out and find her great love..
She sounds mature and realistic about what her deal is and came across as honest and clear headed in the interview.
Maybe starting with some kind of realistic perspective helps when the heart takes over.
    I should try it..:)

I love what she said about her ex and how their coming together turned out to be for the purpose of creating that magnificent child…

  30. nycmom10024 says:

Iggles you are right, I stand corrected.

  31. gen says:

I don’t know her personally so I can’t say a damned thing about her personal life & why she’s made the choices she has. I don’t know why there’s any hate for her tho, its not like she’s a druggy or cheated on a dude or broke up a marriage. She’s just trying to make it in the world like everyone else…..but with prettier genes.

  32. OC lady says:

I can’t believe she’s 44! She just doesn’t age. Did she sell her soul to the devil? She’s definitely one of the prettiest ladies in Hollywood. Right after Selma Hayek and Sophia Vergara.

  33. BurntSalt says:

That child is a beauty. I never understood segregation in America. The result of mixing the races always ends up to be out of this world beauty. So glad I live in today’s world. The best looking celebrity baby as time goes on.

  34. Ruffian9 says:

    So. Gorgeous.

  35. Lila says:

    @Marjalane

Uhhh… you’re a little off center yourself and a bit shallow. Y’know, Gabriel has only been on the radar since he dated Halle Berry. I’ve never even heard the dude speak. How does everyone know he’s such a great guy? Cause he takes pictures? Pffftt!

  36. Marjalane says:

I’m sorry #35! Tomorrow is another day and if I try very hard, perhaps I can live up to your expectations of how one should comment regarding egotistical women and hot men!

In the meantime, perhaps YOU could see about getting yourself a life!

  37. Lila says:

I need to get a life because I found your comment a little wacky? My expectations of you are very low, so you don’t have far to crawl. But I joke. I’m not trying to start a flame war with you; but I thought you were a bit harsh and way out left field, but you’re certainly entitled. I came here for fun. Relax. Lol!

  38. LucaBella says:

I took the Blackberry comment to be about phones… go figure.

  39. McMe says:

September issues are the biggest issue of the year for “Fashion” magazines. Supermodels should be on the cover not 5’4″ actresses. Ugh!!!
Actresses in movies; models on fashion magazine covers.

  40. gretchen says:

me too lucabella….oh well, anyway, don’t see much to critisize halle for…looking for love, who isn’t??

  41. gretchen says:

    oops *criticise* damn

  42. NicoleAM says:

I’m really not one to gush over babies, but her daughter is absolutely beautiful. I haven’t seen many of HB’s movies, but I like the sound of this interview, and she’s hardly ever splashed across the pages of the rags. Me likes.

  43. oduroyal says:

I love Halle…I can’t wait to get the new Vogue issue 🙂

  44. weslyn says:

i’m sorry but she puts most of the women in hollywood to shame….and i’d like to see her as cleopatra instead of angelina
