If they want the contestants to "pick the right material" and "show their personalities" then the contestants should be able to pick their on genre. Paula's latest snafu only proved what most of us already suspected - much of the show is scripted and the outcome is probably manipulated. Besides, shouldn't an accomplished artist be able to sing any songs? I'm not saying that a rap artist should sing opera, but most of the themes are pretty middle of the road, and just about anyone should be able to do them - you've heard them in elevators all your life.
