Brian Austin Green is kind of sweet, smart & interesting: who knew?

Brian Austin Green is interviewed in the new issue of Details Magazine (the one with The Hamm on the cover). Now, I’ve never really formed a full-fledged opinion of BAG as an adult. I thought he was ridiculously cheesy back in his 90210 days, and when he was all grown up and being the “silent partner” to Megan Fox, I often wondered if he was just as stupid as Megan, or if he was the kind of guy who liked to be with really insecure, dumb women because that’s the way he got his rocks off. But in this Details piece, BAG comes across as… nice. Likeable. Intelligent and interesting and a guy with sh-t to say. Granted, he’s not a brain surgeon or anything, but I wasn’t expecting to think he would be this nice and down-to-earth. The full Details piece is here – and here are some highlights:

Details: You were on the original Beverly Hills 90210 for 10 years—a show that defined America to the world.
Brian Austin Green: In a bright, flashy, horrible-hair kind of way. Let’s be honest.

Details: The hair didn’t seem as horrible at the time.
Brian Austin Green: I was just talking to the guy behind the bar, who said, “I used to love the original 90210 . . . the new one is not so good.” And my response is, “Of course not.” 90210 only worked because of that time period—because the world didn’t have access to a lifestyle like that. The Internet wasn’t what it is now. With TMZ and Paris Hilton wrecking cars and people being chased on freeways, there’s nothing interesting about Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills is nothing anymore.

Details: Do the paparazzi hound you?
Brian Austin Green: It wasn’t so much of a problem before Megan, but once Transformers hit, that was it. I had never experienced paparazzi on that level, because during 90210 they were still developing pictures and selling them by hand. It was a whole different experience.

Details: Some of the glamour and magic of Hollywood has been eroded.
Brian Austin Green: As someone who still loves movies and television, I honestly don’t want to know what Mel Gibson is like at home. I want to watch Braveheart. I don’t want any of the personal stuff. I’m not saying Mel’s choices are the best—obviously not—but it’s a shame that no one will enjoy a Mel Gibson film in the same way again. Mel made a business out of being nuts on camera, out of his f-cking mind. And it’s like, what, do you expect him to be totally normal at home? It’s not possible.

Details: What was it like to be famous in the nineties?
Brian Austin Green: Car shows. Mall appearances. And Grad Nite at Disneyland. Times were simple then. But now—just today we had a guy in the grocery store with his camera phone videotaping us walking down the aisles. And there’s nothing I can do about it, other than take the guy’s phone and drive off with it. Then there’d be a video with a headline: STEALING CAMERAS? WHAT’S BECOME OF BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN? THE MARRIAGE MUST NOT BE GOING WELL. AND HE’S NOT WORKING MUCH LATELY.

Details: You’re on the new season of Desperate Housewives. How did you land that?
Brian Austin Green: I was in Hawaii on my honeymoon, and I got a call from my manager saying, “Marc Cherry wants to sit down with you. He’d like to have you read. Just a couple scenes.” I said, “Of course.” I’m not against auditioning. I audition for everything. The best parts you have to audition for. The ones that I’m offered are the ones like Megalodon 2: This Time It’s Personal.

Details: You play a buff contractor.
Brian Austin Green: Sweaty guy with a hammer. A lot of tank tops. I’ve got to say it’s a whole new world for me. I’ve never played a hunky guy. There was one day when I had to take my shirt off. I must have done 400 push-ups. I feel like I understand the pressure that women go through. I feel, like, all-woman at times.

Details: I hear that you’re actually pretty good with a hammer.
Brian Austin Green: I built a theater with a friend in Los Angeles, yeah. I spent months hanging drywall. I own a level, and I know how to use it. And I have a chalk line also. You might want to throw that in there.

Details: Does Megan tease you about this new ab-conscious role?
Brian Austin Green: She does. She busts my balls just enough to make me laugh and not feel self-conscious about what I’m doing. She’s good about it.

Details: You’ve married Megan Fox and turned her into a stepmom—not the role most of us imagine her in.
Brian Austin Green: She is absolutely my better half in parenting. She just gets it. It’s instinctual for her. She loves my son, Kassius. And from the time we started dating—you know, she was 18—she stepped in and took control. It’s unbelievable. At 18, I was like, “Hey, which club is open tonight? And how cool do my pants look? Can I sneak a drink across the bar without getting caught?”

Details: Was the nearly 13-year age difference a concern at any point?
Brian Austin Green: When we met, I had just separated from Kash’s mom and a relationship was the last thing on my mind. It’s not something I ever thought would be serious. But she brought out parts of me that I had lost in my last relationship. I had come off of 90210, and I never wanted to leave my house. I was afraid of the press. I was afraid of people’s opinions of me. I would walk into a Coffee Bean and not want to look the guy behind the counter in the eyes because I was afraid he was thinking, “Oh, that’s that ridiculous guy from 90210 who put out the hip-hop album.” Megan was a big part of boosting my confidence. And at the same time, I was somebody responsible and grounded for her to be around. We just matched.

Details: Your relationship was often described as on-again, off-again.
Brian Austin Green: We’ve been together for six years. Find a picture of one of us with any other boyfriend or girlfriend—I challenge you. You’ll only find pictures of her doing press with Shia LaBeouf or me with my son. That’s it. We never once dated anyone else or did anything else.

Details: Did you ever try to give her advice on navigating the world of celebrity?
Brian Austin Green: You know, in the beginning, she didn’t really want to hear the comparisons, because it was her own crazy road, and it was overwhelming, and she wanted to figure it all out on her own. But now we sit and we share stories, and we’ve found the commonality of it all. It’s the most backwards, f-cked-up love story you’ve ever heard. And it worked. And the day that I said, “I do,” I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life. And it was the absolute perfect start to what we hope will be an amazing life together.

Details: She’s a lot more famous than you are right now. Is that intimidating?
Brian Austin Green: I know the normal male thing is the man works and is successful and brings home the paycheck. I don’t know who the hell set it up, but it’s what people expect. I just don’t care. I hated being famous during 90210. I’m not an extrovert. I’m 37. I have a beautiful wife. I have an amazing 8-year-old son. I love acting, but this is just my job. F-ck, next year I could book some crazy movie that blows up and things could shift completely. And I guarantee you at that point she’ll say, “F-ck, thank God. You go do all that sh-t now. I’m sick of it.”

[From Details Magazine]

See? He sounds grounded. Accepting that his wife is more famous, and he’s also the first one to defuse the onslaught of 90210 jokes by making sure he makes them first – it’s very clever. I took out all the parts about his rap career, because I found that a little sad, but whatever. He sounds nice. I’m a fan. I hope he gets more television work. Maybe a guest spot on the new Law & Order: LA. Maybe The Closer! I could see that.

Well his wife is no dummy either.

  2. marge says:

    aj
you’re right, no dummy, she just looks like a blow up doll

  3. Felicia says:

I knew! The way he waited on Donna all that time? Such patience!

  4. Julie says:

Jesus, third pic from the bottom – Megan’s face is starting to look like the Cat Lady’s.

  5. kelbear says:

Good for him. I like articles like this one.

  6. Katalina76 says:

I have to say, I’ve had a soft-spot for BAG since he showed up on The Sarah Connor Chronicles. He was very good, and I was sad to see it get canceled.

  7. viper says:

So is he trying to cover for the fact that Megan ditched Passion plays premiere and then of how much the feedback said it bombed and she was the center of that reason…again? The girl is absolutely box office poison. If they start whining again about their privacy being invaded would sombody please tell these two to shove it; because nobody is pointing a gun at them forcing them to answer. I just wanna know when this girl is going to A) stop screwing with her face B) finally give up acting – or lack there of and disappear so that somebody with actual real talent can finally get their chance at these roles she bombs at?

  8. That girl says:

I just love articles like this! I really hope he does land an incredible role this coming year! He is great. More BAG!!

  9. Lady Jane says:

haha. I forgot about that hip hop album. But yes, he is endearing in this interview. I like the bit about the chalk line.

  10. bizzy says:

they could be such a cute couple if megan would stop jacking her face up over the top of her head.

  11. ghostbuster says:

i find extremely good looking. i think hes one of the most handsome men in hollywood. i loved this interview too. hes seems like such a nice normal guy whos funny. his interview brightened my morning. i love what he has to say about his wife. maybe we are all wrong about her. i saw her diablo cody interview and enjoyed it. i do agree with what bag and brolin had to say. today in hollywood things are taken out of context. i hope to see much more of him on the small screen

  12. omondieu says:

I’ve always had a soft spot for him.

But Megan, Megan…I can’t make up my mind about her. The things she says are so asinine, and she looks like a blowup doll, but you never see any photos of her stumbling out of clubs like a drunken mess, or with her lady bits hanging out, or on the arms of a different guy every two days. I WANT to hate her so much…but the fact that she went for the older, quieter, less conventional Hollywood hottie, when any (more successful) heterosexual male in the biz would chew off his own foot to hook up with her says something, I think.

  13. TQB says:

Thanks for this. I agree with ghostbuster, BAG is handsome and this interview was charming and it brightened my day to think that David Silver grew up to be a good father and a supportive partner.

  14. Obvious says:

I kinda adore him. He grew up hot. I’m not a huge Megan fan, she was gorgeous at one point-not she’s pretty but plastic. however i wish them all the best.

  15. Laura says:

He sounds really nice and funny. Maybe he can convince Megan to stop fucking with the botox and lip injections!!

  16. caz says:

Yeah BAG is definitely cute and I kind of like that he’s introverted. He does seem really sweet and I had changed my mind about him when he did “Domino Harvey” where he and Ian Zimmerman basically made fun of themselves.

I think anyone who fell into those fads of the early 90’s has to make fun of themselves and sometimes, we all just cringe inside at what we did.

  17. Kimble says:

    I think he’s really hot!

  18. Leticia says:

I think that they just might be the hollywood couple who stays together!

  19. Cam says:

    “Who Knew?”
-Just bout everyone who watched Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I’ve loved him ever since.

  20. Eileen says:

I never watched 90210 in its hey day and I was actually in high school at the time so I had no idea who he was. But he sure is hot!

  21. KUE says:

I don’t see him hot, just a normal guy, he is not different to me from 90210.
With the publicity anybody becomes whatever they want you to become, with the media game one day you are hot, another day you are not. They play with ppl minds all the time.

  22. Stephie says:

You’re right, he is interesting, as was this article. Nice to see him all grown up and doing well. His son is adorable.

  23. Atticus says:

I’m surprised by how much I’m loving the BAG! I remember the earliest days of 90210 when he was so scrawny and geeky. He grew up a lot on the show and was a hottie by the third or fourth season. He’s aged very well, too.

Omondieu – you summed up my thoughts about Megan Fox perfectly – I totally agree.

  24. Crash2GO2 says:

Wow, he cleans up VERY nicely!

  25. I Choose Me says:

Like him, loved his interview. With her I’m still on the fence.

  26. geenie says:

I can’t stand his wife but there is something about him that I like. I’ve never hated him but we has a big dweeb on 90210.

  27. Jeri says:

He does sound cool. Desperate Housewives does not seem very good to their guest stars careers. I would love to see him on The Closer (my fav) or even Vampire Diaries!

  28. Shawna says:

I love how he talks about the media and the paparazzi. This is a new world with online journalism, and he is one of the few who’s seen both ends in the “same” career.

  29. GatsbyGal says:

He’s too good for Megan Fox.

  30. Mistral says:

Aw. He does come off nice and smart.

  31. locamochagirl says:

God he is so hot now. Such a babe. David Silver forever.

  32. Chicoulina says:

He cleaned up just like Patrick Dempsey did, they were total geeks as teenagers and in their early 20’s but charming and hot as they get older!!Who would have known back then?

  33. Camille says:

Aww cute interview, he came across very likable. Good for him. I hope his career takes off.

  34. Isa says:

Wow, I really liked this interview! It’s weird though, when he talks about her it seems more authentic than when it’s the other way around.

  35. Az says:

Ha! The revenge of David Silver! I always thought he was this smart, funny guy who was saddled with the whole 90210 hype/persona.

  36. Vee says:

Wow! That was a very insightful, entertaining read. Brian Austin Greene, you have my respect. Best wishes!

  37. GT says:

He sounds very normal and grounded, good for them!!

  38. jemshoes says:

This is going to sound insane but I never watched 90210 and only knew about BAG and the rest of the crew from reading teen mags, etc. Last year, followed BAG on an Oz national radio program where the DJs somehow got his agent’s mobile (ie cell) number and rang BAG. BAG was really very good-natured about it all, answered all Qs, and as a handshake the DJs let him promote this weird exercise stick he was flogging on their show. I just thought he was a good sport and have liked him since. So Megan can’t be all that bad if she’s with a guy like BAG! 😉

  39. lala in nYc says:

Interesting interview. He’s really aged well. Didn’t think he was hot at all during 90210 but now, yes, he’s definitely HOT. He’s completely lost his boyish looks from his Peach Pit days.

  40. Dee Vine says:

I actually like them as a couple. She could have really tried to climb the Hollywood ladder by doing PR hookups with big stars. Maybe she did try to do a bit of publicity stunts with their “on and off” relationship but that is minor compared to others.

But the fact that 1. she is still with him (and married him no less) and 2. appears to be a hands-on stepmother shows that under her “foot in mouth” disease and plumped up lips is a pretty decent person. He appears to be mature and comfortable with himself

  41. SallyJay says:

He sounds like a wonderful guy. I wish him success and happiness.

  42. Eleonor says:

@Dee Vine I agree with you she could have hookups with, I don’t know, Robert Pattinson? Or someone like him, but she married him; she can be stupid, but I think they’re a beautiful couple. BAG was a very A-List one during 90210, and he also has discovered what happens when you don’t succeed in something, his failures made him a wiser person I think.

  43. fizXgirl314 says:

please, why are we up this guy’s ass all of a sudden??

  44. Bored@Work says:

Oh Yeah. Always loved him and hated the way a lot of people talked about him. It is true, I have never seen her with anybody else or him with anybody else. As dumb as she looks, she is certainly not a whore like the majority of celebs who sleep around and move from bed to bed. Nice. He’s hot as hell too, reminds me of my boyfriend. That rugged sexy manly look. Tom Selleck kinda handsome.

  45. Daniella says:

sounds like Vanessa Marcil was not the most pleasant to be with.

  46. MooHoo says:

he sounds lovely. so down to earth and a good sense of humour. good looks and laughs, what more does a girl want. hes got it..

  47. Kitten says:

He comes across as really likeable. Cute too. I liked how he revealed a bit about his relationship with Marcil without trashing her. Classy.
