Do Angelina Jolie & Johnny Depp have chemistry in ‘The Tourist’ trailer?

38648, VENICE, ITALY - Tuesday March 17, 2010. Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp film scenes together on a massive speedboat in Venice, Italy for their upcoming film The Tourist . The thriller, being directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, is slated to release sometime next year. Oh. My. Jebus. After yesterday’s mini-clips, I wasn’t expecting this. The first full-length trailer for The Tourist was just released a few hours ago, and… my God. I think I had a Brangeloonie heart attack watching this thing. And now I’m a Depp-loonie too! Lovely Depp. Yes, he’s slightly bloated in the trailer, but he really is supposed to be playing an “average dude” character. Plus, when you get him in a motherf-cking tuxedo, that sh-t it all good. Alright… maybe not the hair. But I’ll live with it. As for Angelina, I’m sad to report that yes, she does seem to be doing some kind of Englishy accent… an accent so strange it only seems to come out on certain words. And there are a couple of shots where she looks older than her years, but overall, I find her divine. Here’s the trailer:

LOVE. Also, it’s nice to see Paul Bettany in this kind of super-spy role, isn’t it? He looks great too. Just some other thoughts: Do all European trains carry so many hot guys? Seriously, if this is what coach class train travel looks like, I’m going to Europe. Also, Angelina isn’t giving me the heavy bangs trauma that I was expecting – her hairstyles seem to vary from scene to scene, and sometimes I didn’t even notice the bangs.

Oh, and I do think they have on-screen chemistry, by the way. But strangely enough, it seems to be coming mostly from Johnny – his cute little face perking up when he sees her in the boat, the look on his face when he tells her he doesn’t regret kissing her. *SWOON*

The pair shot a scene where Depp climbed aboard a water taxi in which Angelina was riding in. The filming was allegedly shut down early for the day, as too many fans surrounded the set, prohibiting the production to run safely. Photograph: PacificCoastNews.com

Sexy! I will be seeing this!

  2. lena says:

Oh god…she seems to be doing an accent..AJ accents are that great

  3. Eve says:

That’s probably because he’s a better actor…as much as I love The Jolie, I don’t think she’s the best actress out there (I’m in no way saying she’s not good enough — just not as good as some people think).

I’m sooo going to watch this. I just hope I won’t feel like taking my clothes off while doing so — in a crowded theater? Awwwkward!

  4. Sophie says:

yup. will definitely be seeing this! it’ll be really nice to see Johnny Depp in a film where he’s playing a (relatively) normal guy. it’s been a while.

  5. Scorpiana says:

*swoons right alongside you* I am sooo going to see this movie!

  6. YOYO99 says:

    Nope not at all.

  7. Jen says:

Whatever they did to his face looks MUCH better in motion than it did/does in stills! Angelina is still way too skinny, and I don’t know what’s up with that accent…but I like that Johnny sounds American in this. He’s so good.

  8. Mairead says:

OOOOH Paul Bettany is in this? I am so going to see this now. 😀 He is fantastic. He’s often the best thing about the films he’s in *coughDaVinciCodecough*

And Johnny Depp would have chemistry with a bale of silage! 😉

  9. Ida says:

    I cannot wait!

  10. Lee says:

It looks much better than I was expecting!

  11. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Yay!!!!!!! I love it but who thinks I wouldn’t have? I also think Angelina is doing a very good English accent. It sounds perfectly fine to me. I know people are gonna bitch about the accent but what else are they gonna do all day. I think she sounds and OMG looks fabulous. I am melting the woman makes me soo hawt I don’t see that much chemistry between them in this trailer but maybe the film will show more. I see a lot of restraint. I am super excited.

Love they used a Muse song in the trailer. One of my fave Brad and Angelina tribute vids on youtube uses the same song for Mr and Mrs Smith.

  12. Jeri says:

Depp is sooo…HOT and a classic at everything. He’s a great actor, always (almost) a gentleman & so charming. Great Daddy too. All his movies are good.

Even his problems when he was with K Moss add to his appeal. He would be too perfect if he hadn’t had some trauma in his life.

  13. Eve says:

Even his problems when he was with K Moss add to his appeal. He would be too perfect if he hadn’t had some trauma in his life.

He’s learned with his past mistakes. Not many can say that about themselves. I love him.

*I got all excited when I saw their names showing up on the screen. GAH!

  14. jane16 says:

Looks like a fun movie, and we are planning to see it. I love Johnny’s voice, never been too crazy about Angies. Also, agree with kaiser that she looks older than she is here. I don’t know if thats the hideous makeup they have on her or just that shes too thin. If she put on 10lbs, she’d look fabulous.

  15. Whatever says:

There are tribute videos on You Tube for Brad and Angelina? The f*ck? I thought only twitards did that crap! Seriously, that made me forget my comment. Oh yeah, they do have good chemistry. Now I’m waiting for stories that she banged him while Brad waited outside the trailer in 3….2….

  16. N says:

I lived in England for 3 years….and her accent in the movie sounds nothing like my British friends (whom I desperately miss listening to now that I’m back Stateside)….

  17. Sassy says:

I’ll watch it because of Johnny.

And is AJ SUPPOSED to have that weird/bad British accent? If no, then why is she doing that? And if so, um, she needs a better dialect coach.

  18. Conando says:

She looks too thin (shocker!) and he looks too bloated…and they both look older than they are.

  19. jen says:

    Yawn. I’ll wait for cable.

  20. Lisa S. says:

Yes, my boyfriend, Johnny Depp is in this movie and I am so going to see it. I love him, love love love him. I am not so fond of her anymore. All her films are so similiar. UGH.

  21. Lila says:

    I liked Johnny.

I’ll pass on that other one.

Maybe it’s the trailer, or is this going to be one of those movies where the two main characters don’t seem to be apart of the same storyline?

  22. Solveig says:

“Do all European trains carry so many hot guys?”
Nope, unless I’m so unlucky to always catch the wrong train with gross and sad business men on it.
    Mh, probably I am (unlucky).
Johnny is soooooooo sweet, I thought he looked like shit, yesterday, but I’m happy I’m changing my mind, he still looks hot (and sweet).

Ps: her accent is not British by any stretch.

  23. Girafe99 says:

Is this a comedy or drama thriller, cos I was laughing a lot. The accent doesn’t bother me, its distracting enough to bother but then this is only the trailer

  24. Crash2GO2 says:

I haven’t watched the clip, but is she maybe doing that Transatlantic accent thing? You know, like Katheryn Hepburn and Cary Grant did back in the day.

  25. Ursaline says:

Eh, not sure what they did to his hair/beard to make his face look so full, or maybe taking time out from shooting POTC movies gave him time to enjoy eating again… But he is eternally an amazing actor.

Her…don’t know about that. I still haven’t forgiven her (I know it wasn’t her fault but still) for the gross platinum hair in Life or Life or Something Like It, even though she was pretty funny doing the drunk Rolling Stones bit.

I think I’ll be waiting for it to show up in Netflix.

  26. Strawberry says:

I love that it takes place in Venice. I probably see it just for the Euro locations/travel porn. I lust after her eye make-up in the night scenes – she looks incredible (or is lit really well 😉

I’d also see this bec. the director Florian von Donnersmarck made an absolutely shattering movie “The Lives of Others”/Die Lieben von Anderen. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should.

  27. di butler says:

This reminds me of Duplicity. Horrible concept for a film that can’t decide if it is a rom-com, a thriller, or what. Why, JD? You need a new movie like “Blow.”

  28. olivia says:

    I think I will rewatch original version…

  29. nnn says:

The cast of ‘The Tourist’ is full of beautiful men. Depp is one of the least one.

    Among them :

    – Paul Bethany;
    – Rufus Sewel;
    – Timothy Dalton;
    – Raoul Bova…..so sexy;
    – Clément Sibony;
    – Ralf Moeller

  30. angie fan says:

Yes, they look adorable together and definite chemistry, but, oh-boy-oh-boy, I’d now love to see Angelina and Paul Bettany do an on-screen make out session next. He is hot, hot, hot!!!

  31. mila says:

Hmm strange. Is it a comedy? A spy movie?Action film? This trailer looks really awkward, if those are the best parts from the movie then I don’t think it’ll be a great artistic success. But I’ll watch it anyway, of course:)Especially that The Lives of Others is one of the best movies of the decade.

  32. Eve says:

    Rufus Sewel!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    *FAINTS*

  33. BethL says:

I think it looks really good. I don’t think Angelina looks old and ugly. I thought she looked really pretty. I don’t know why everybody is attacking the accent. It seems very lowkey and faint.

  34. Katie says:

I do like when Depp plays characters with some humor, which this one seems to have. In general I haven’t really loved many Jolie movies though. This seems very middle of the road to me.

  35. spinner says:

Johnny Depp can do no wrong. He is always fabulous. Angelina?? meh

  36. guesty says:

they don’t look their best…he’s bloated & she’s way too thin…but the sexy is definitely there.

  37. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

@LA- I am sure Jolie could sit on the toilet for 2 hrs and you would be ohhhhing and ahhhhhing.

Even with actors I love, I admit when they have bad movies.

As I have said before, I guess it is nice to be that enthusiastic over someone.

  38. maj says:

I was one of those that thought that that the two have no chemistry together. But now that i have seen that trailer i changed my mind. And i like more Deep in this , i saw again those bit of sparkles in his eyes. So, yes, seems good. Not going to the cinema too see it, though.

  39. Lady Jane says:

    No chemistry.

I love that Angelina’s favourite acting tricks is moving her eyes around:

I am looking down: BAM, I blink and when I open my eyes, I look up.

(several variations of the above set to music, while she reacts to Johnny.)

    What is that accent??!!

    Snooooooze.

  40. Praise St. Angie! says:

“There are tribute videos on You Tube for Brad and Angelina?”

    lol…I had the same reaction.

  41. Lady Jane says:

    I JUST GOT THE ACCENT!!!!

She is totally doing the voice of the hot chic in Weird Science. The ‘Don’t hate me because I am beautiful” chic.

  42. mina says:

I wish people understand that Johnny is playing an averange looking guy in this movie.Anthony Zimmer anyone? This movie will be the re-make of that movie.I watched Anthony Zimmer last week,Yvan Attal was playing the guy Johnny is playing now and he was saying to female character “A woman like you can not fall in love with a man like me” I think the meaning is obvious.Johnny changes his look very successfully when he takes on a character .Yes,he looks older here but it was their intention.Look at the his newest pics from Arkansas or POTC set.He still looks very good to me.Definately not older than his age.And not bloated.

  43. Eve says:

    @ Mina:

Johnny Depp is in a movie with Angelina Jolie…that means he will be “hated on” by associaton.

  44. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@fluffy You can be enthusiastic about someone, maybe you just haven’t found the right person.

  45. Rachel says:

Ugh, why does she insist on doing accents? They are always atrocious!

  46. wunderkindt says:

They dont have a spark between them, but I like Johnny, so it’s a go!

  47. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

@LA- I generally save my enthusiam for people in my day to day life.

I may seem like I am picking on you, but I am truly not. I know you from another site where you used to post and I always felt bad at how they treated you. My point is, maybe I am just jealous that you are obviously much younger than me, and I wish that I was at that point in my life again, as opposed to being an old fuddy duddy. Anyway, I do not fault you for loving an actress, I just think you need to be a tad more objective.

  48. Moreaces says:

There are tribute videos on You Tube for Brad and Angelina?”

    lol…I had the same reaction
    ==========
There are literally thousands,, YouTube it sometime, I just dont get it, but if you are a big fan you may enjoy.. Im a fan but not that much

  49. Kitten says:

This will be a rental for me for sure but I wouldn’t bother seeing it in the theater-LOVE Jonny Depp though. Angelina Jolie should stay away from doing accents. But good god, she is gorgeous!!!

  50. OC lady says:

    Johnny: You look ravenous.
    Angelina: You mean ravishing?
Johnny: NO, I mean ravenous! We’re in Venice. Try the pasta for fuck’s sakes. 😉

And I agree about accents. Most actors can’t do them well. Someone should let her know. On the other hand, she does try something new rather than phoning it in. So, nice try but . . .

It seems like this movie can either be a hit or a miss, but I will still watch it. I even watched that shiteous movie Johnny did for Roman Rolanski (while cursing them both). I watch any movie with Johnny in it. It’s almost a tradition at this point. 🙂

  51. nnn says:

I don’t like movies with ‘romantic’ adjective in it : romantic commedies, romantic thrillers. I just think that they are usually lame.

I will however make the effort to watch this one because of Jolie and because of the ‘thriller’ component.

I won’t expecting much from it.

  52. RHONYC says:

    sucks ass. period.

and miz jolie might wanna rethink that whole ‘ana’ thing she’s doing.

she looks absolutely skeletal in the ballroom scene! so not sexy. 🙁

  53. Hollowdoll says:

She looks old and worn out. The accent is offputting. I don’t know if even Johnny D and Paully B. can save this movie.

  54. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@Fluffy Now thats where I envy you because I can barely tolerate the people I know irl. It wouldn’t be like that forever.

Your not a fuddy duddy, I would much other be this passionate about people I know, then people I see in TV and music. Not the case. You don’t have to feel bad for me I have extremely thick skin. I also try and be objective I did say I didn’t think Angie and Johnny had that much chemistry. I wish they did but I am not getting that vibe.

@Whatever and PSA they mostly certainly do have Brad and Angelina tribute vids on Youtube. Yea I have made some but I haven’t done so in awhile.

  55. Kim says:

I ‘ll watch it to see Angie not really a big fan of JD, although I prefer him in type of film. I’m tired of him in Pirates films, Alice.., Sweeney Todd. Its refreshing to hear his natural accent. As for Angie’s accent I ‘m not sure what kind of accent it is.As for Angie’s weight it is what it is.She and Sandra Bullock are the highest paid ($ 20 M a film +percentages) and the most sought after actresses in Hollywood and SB is 11 years older than AJ . Also Sandra has been in more films.Salt has made $272 million worlwide pretty good for a non sequel, movie not based on a book and with a female lead. Also regarding her weeight she is strong enough to carry Zahara and Shiloh at the same time through Japanese airport. So its working for her.

  56. Solveig says:

@30 nnn, I don’t see Raoul Bova in the video, where is he? There are too other italians actors, one of them (the man on the boat) always makes crappy movies, I can’t believe he’s breathing the same air as Johnny…

  57. Shi-gatsu says:

Sorry – but the only actors workin’ it are Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany.

Angelina is doing the squinty-eye pursed lips thing again. And the accent is killing me!

  58. nnn says:

He is not in the video but he is cast in the movie.

He is one fine male specie.

  59. mslewis says:

I don’t think Angelina has any sort of accent but her own. I even put my earphones in to hear better and I think she just sounds like a sophisticated world traveler.

This movie looks really good. I’m so happy they are releasing it in December rather than March. It will be this year’s Christmas movie to go to, alone. Can’t wait.

And, yes, Kaiser, on European trains the men are quite handsome . . . and mysterious!! You need to leave immediately for France or Italy and get a ticket on any train. Make sure you go first or second class because third class is the pits!! In third you have to sit with the great unwashed!!

  60. Celebitchy says:

This looks awesome! Kaiser – you need to come hang out in Berlin with me. I am constantly seeing hot guys and wishing you were here to properly appreciate them. They’re not always on the same train or in the same vicinity, but you would be amazed by how many I see in a damn day. And I notice more of them thanks to your training.

  61. mslewis says:

“There are tribute videos on You Tube for Brad and Angelina?”
    ————————————————
Where have you been the last almost six years? There must be thousands of tribute videos of these two. In fact, back when I would go to justjared, there was a guy(girl?) who would post a new tribute video to them every two weeks or so and whenever a Jolie-Pitt babe was born/adopted. This person also posted the most ridiculous, stalky fanfic you could imagine. I never actually clicked on a video and would pass up the fanfic because this person scared the heck out of me!! Talk about a stalker!! I love Angelina and Brad but sometimes their fans can make your hair stand on end!!

  62. Crash2GO2 says:

@mslewis: “I don’t think Angelina has any sort of accent but her own. I even put my earphones in to hear better and I think she just sounds like a sophisticated world traveler.”

Excuse me a minute…. ROTFLMAO!!!!! *wipes eyes*

Seriously though, speaking of accents, I found a really fun site where you can look up how a piece of English dialogue sounds depending on where the person who is reading it is from. Fun!

    http://accent.gmu.edu/

  63. jen says:

    hot couple

  64. Raven says:

This seems very 60’s to me. He seems like a hapless guy caught up in her game, going along for the ride. Of course things are never what they seem or he wouldn’t have gotten involved in the first place. I’m thinking Charade with the roles reversed, i.e. she’s the one with the secret.

  65. bellebeesting says:

    no. just no.

  66. Sumodo1 says:

The trailer was interesting to look at but the plot seems lacking. This one wants to be “retro” but by making Johnny Depp appear to be a clueless tourist, it dumbs down the film.

That accent La Jolie does is deplorable.

  67. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

“I don’t think Angelina has any sort of accent but her own. I even put my earphones in to hear better and I think she just sounds like a sophisticated world traveler.”

Ahahahahahahahahahaha! OMG! That is the funniest thing I have read on here! Thank you for that laugh!

  68. Camille says:

I think it looks like a fun movie, nothing too serious or anything to get worked up over and the leads look great (as always). I’ll definitely be seeing this, although I don’t know if I will see it at the movie theater.

  69. moo says:

looks boring…. I’ve seen better acting at the local high school. pass.

  70. Praise St. Angie! says:

um, I think you guys may have missed my (and Whatever’s) intention in our posts.

I don’t usually speak for another poster, but what that person (I think) meant, and what I was agreeing with, is that he/she was surprised that someone would spend (or waste, depending on how you look at it) the time to make a Brangelina tribute video.

I guess it’s just hard for me to understand the level of fan-dom that would lead someone to do that.

oh, and where I’ve been the last six years is living my life for me, not for some celebrity. I don’t scour youtube for video tributes of ANY celebrity. But like I said, it’s just that it’s hard for me to understand that level of fan-dom, and the type of devotion to someone I don’t know, or will ever meet.

  71. Solveig says:

@nnn, I didn’t know he (Raul) was in this movie, and I agree, he is a very good looking man but I always have the impression that he’s not very clever…

@Crash, thanks for the link, I find so funny and lovely both japanese and icelandic’s accents, love them and miss them :(.

“And, yes, Kaiser, on European trains the men are quite handsome . . . and mysterious!! You need to leave immediately for France or Italy and get a ticket on any train. Make sure you go first or second class because third class is the pits!! In third you have to sit with the great unwashed!!”

Ok, guess I’m not lucky, and when I travel by train in Italy the only thing I notice is that the train is always effing late.
At this point, I suppose that it’s more likely that I meet a hot guy on an icelandic train* than here in Italy.
    I’m heading to northen Europe.

Back to the trailer, I don’t know, Johnny is doing a good job as usual, but everything seems off, especially Angelina playing la femme fatale, and the men looking at her that way… seems a parody not a spy-thriller-whatever movie.

*there are no railroads in Iceland.

  72. anonymous says:

Hot, hot , hot got to see this movie. It is good to see Johnny Depp playing a normal role too many cartoon characters, almost like Jim Carrey. By the way is angelina expecting another baby she seem to be wearing bundled clothes in warm weather.

  73. Kaiser says:

Sometimes those fan tribute video compilations are killer, though. When I recently fell in love with my future husband David Gandy (Brit model), I looked up his videos and there were a bunch of really cool tribute videos with lots of awesome photos.

There are fan tribute videos to most celebrities, by the way. But that’s not the point, is it? You just wanted to pick on the Brangeloonies.

  74. latam says:

i dont get why everyone is knocking the accent? I’m english and i thing it sounds fine. very upper middle class but not too exaggerated

  75. nnn says:

    @76

All the english fans in one of the site i have visited also say her english accent (though there is not such thing as a single english accent per se) is spot on, only the American fans don’t think so. Go figure.

  76. Cheyenne says:

@mslewis: I know the one you are talking about who posts all that fanfic and stuff. She’s been banned from several websites. I like Angie and Brad but damn, there’s a limit, know what I’m saying? That person scares the hell out of me. If she ever saw Brad in person she’d probably grab him in a headlock and never let go.

  77. Praise St. Angie! says:

actually, Kaiser, I wasn’t picking on Brangeloonies. The mention of Brangelina tribute videos is what alerted me that videos like that exist, so they were what I commented on. though I may not have been clear, the point I was making is that I don’t understand that level of devotion to (or hate for, for that matter) ANY celebrity.

while most fans of most celebrities are not like this, there is a caliber of fan that (sorry to put it this way) freaks me out a little bit. ditto for the folks who HATE on a celeb to that degree.

I’m not on youtube that much – I really only watch a video from there if someone posts it on a blog or puts it up on facebook. sorry if I seem naive on the availability of celebrity tribute videos on youtube, but the fact that they exist was sincerely surprising to me.

  78. Frankly says:

She was giving me “Weird Science” flashbacks. She’s going to punish him like she punished Chet.

  79. jzhz says:

Wow, they both look friggin’ horrible! What the hell happened to Johnny Depp? Also, the movie looks boring.

  80. DD says:

LOL… I am getting Original Sin flashbacks… with a Lara Croft accent. I didn’t find the trailer interesting enough and they focused on some tacky dialogue. The only thing that is going to drag me to the theatre is that Angelina and Johnny are in it. Also Paul Bettany looked mighty fine.

  81. mslewis says:

I stand by what I said about Angelina sounding like a “sophisticated world traveler” because that is what she is. But I would not expect people who spend their lives on gossip sites to understand that. So, whatever. Try getting out of your basement and listening for a change.

Chey, I don’t remember that person’s name but she was a real nut job. Scary!! I don’t go to justjared anymore because the so-called Angelina/Brad fans were driving me nutty!! As mentioned, I absolutely LOVE Angelina and Brad and everybody knows I will defend them against any and all enemies but those nuts on JJ are just too much for any sane person. I just got sick of all of them. Plus, it was really difficult going through those buttons where you can’t read anything negative about A&B unless you click. I’m all for people saying what they want to say about anybody but you can’t respond/argue with them if what they say is not printed. So, I haven’t been there since June and I don’t think I’ll go back.

  82. DD says:

I once had the misfortune of reading a snippet of Brangelina fanfic posted by a commenter on dlisted site. Having seen that I dread the day I accidentally come by twihard fanfic…

  83. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@PSA Fan tribute videos is just another form of supporting your favorite celeb, movie, or whatever. Its the equivalent of placing a celeb poster on your wall or putting their pic in your locker. Its nothing to be freaked out about. Its fun actually. I hoped someone would ask to see one of mine but I will just show you anyway. They are all 3 years old, I got busy and had to stop doing these. Here is one for the haters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yi4M7uwKto and one for Brad and Angie for just being a super cute couple and in love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMETckRmTe8

I like those two the best because I was able to integrate video. They are just more polished than what I did before.

  84. anon says:

some celebrities have always had that level of fan devotion think Elvis, Tupac, Marilyn Monroe, MJ that is why people still like them and they get new fans even after death, Audrey Hepburn there are many, many others Bob Marley. Fans show up at airports, mourn when they die tragic deaths etc etc. Even if you are not personally a fan of anyone, a lot of people are 🙂

  85. crazydaisy says:

angie has a great english accent – what are you all kvetching about? lara croft, people. she rocks it.

as for johnny depp, blechhh. i can’t stand his slithery, pocky face or anything else about him. and this new puffy version is even worse. barf. barf. barf.

  86. T. says:

I agree with ‘N.’ That is not an English accent AT ALL! I’m over in London quite often as I have 1st cousins over there. Nope, she is not good at accents. Look at Michael K. Dlisted article on this today. He’s funny! Johnny Depp, LOVE that guy – SOOO much more sexy than Brad Pitt.

He’s very generous too. I’m in Chicago and when he was filming that Dillinger movie Public Enemies here, he was at Gibson’s (great high-end restaurant), he dropped $4000.00 as a tip to the waiter. LUV him!

  87. Melissa says:

Ugh – Johnny Depp is a good looking guy, but he looks like total crap here. I know they were trying to make him look like a “regular guy” – well, they did that, and then some!

  88. Aqua says:

So going to see this! Love JD

  89. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

@latam: “I dont get why everyone is knocking the accent? I’m english and i thing it sounds fine. very upper middle class but not too exaggerated.”

@nnn: “All the english fans in one of the site i have visited also say her english accent (though there is not such thing as a single english accent per se) is spot on, only the American fans don’t think so. Go figure.”

People try to pick on her accent because they don’t like her, period. It’s the only thing they can criticize and think no one will know any better.

They just love to criticize her accent in Alexander, like ANYONE knows what people sounded like back then. But they just KNOW it wasn’t like that! Lol.

She mastered, yes mastered, according to critics, the incredibly complex accent of Marianne Pearl (Dutch/Afro/Cuban/French FFS).

Give it a rest people, she’s talented, I know that just chaps your ass, but it’s true.

  90. lucy2 says:

This looks OK, I’ll probably DVD it for the Depp and Europe factors.
Neither actor looks too good in this – JD looks a little pudgy and the hair is odd, and Jolie looks a good 10 years older than she really is.
Hard to tell with the accent – the big thing for me is if the actor maintains it the whole way through the film.

  91. Cheyenne says:

@Melissa: They made him look beyond a “regular guy”; in that trailer he looks like Joe the Plumber.

  92. jane says:

She needs to gain some weight. I wish I could transfer some of mine over.

  93. Truthzbetta says:

Mmm hot guys on trains. It just sounds right.

  94. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

Just as I thought-it looks awful. I’ll maybe watch it if it comes up as an instant watch on Netflix.

It looks like it doesn’t know what kind of movie it wants to be. The trailer looks slapdashed together, right? And the song doesn’t match the action at all.

  95. Dee Vine says:

Chemistry coming from Depp as he can act, while Jolie is wooden, skinny and why is she dressed like an old lady going to church for a wedding? Not to mention the accent.

I would watch this if it was another actress in the lead. It actually looks good.

  96. Holly says:

@60mslewis: It’s going to be the “go to” movie for the Christmas season? You’re kidding, right? I’m sure it will do well, as most of Jolie’s drivel does well, and the fact that Depp is in it (sad!) can only help it. But “go to” movie? According to buzz around the industry, the “go to” movie for Christmas this year (for adults, that is…) is Black Swan. But I guess we’ll see.

  97. Holly says:

Just watched the trailer. Does Jolie think good acting requires nothing more than puckering her lips and pretending her eyelids have weights on them? Oh, right. And screaming and/or making an “0” face. It looks ridiculous. I wish soooo badly they had chosen a different actress to play along with Depp, because it might have been awesome. Oh well.

  98. Laura says:

Ugghh, Angelina’s accent.. not liking it.
    Johnny however… yummy.

  99. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named: Your opinion is that she is talented. My opinion is that she is not.

In my opinion, she’s gotten by on exotic-for-a-white-girl features, a scandalous past and her reinvention as Mother Angelina. Again, purely my opinion.

It’s not “true” nor “false” that she’s talented, it’s a matter of opinion.

An accent is a part of the character, it indicates character to the audience. If an actor makes that accent really apparent, they have failed (in my opinion).

An actor shouldn’t use an accent if it sounds garbled, if it isn’t consistent and if it generally sounds uncomfortable in the actor’s mouth to the point of audience distraction.

Case in point, Alexander. I’ve gone and taken a quick look at some clips and hot holy hell it’s just as bad as I remember. Boris and Natasha with shades of Aaliyah from Queen of the Damned (another bad accent). She sounds like she’s talking through a mouth full of marbles with a vaguely Russian accent.

It isn’t about knowing how people back then spoke because of course no one knows that.

The point is not to create some silly amalgamation of various accents to create one horrible, inconsistent one that sounds cartoonish to estimate how they may have spoken. If anything, they should have been speaking in vaguely Greek accents, if they were going to insist upon doing accents other than their own.

I have to admit that I love the Tomb Raider films, even with her “accent”. I think what bothers me about it in those films is the inconsistency. Like others have said, a British accent can mean any number of things but typically a British person only uses one; just as a person from Georgia speaks differently than someone from California.

You’d think she was from five different counties from the way her “British” accent jumps all over the place.

Isn’t it perfectly reasonable to assume that she damn well better have gotten her friend’s accent correct? Wasn’t Marianne Pearl on set a lot? And doesn’t Angelina speak to her quite a bit, as they are supposedly friends? Wouldn’t Marianne Pearl think it was a BFD to get her accent right?

And just to be nitpicky, a movie critic doesn’t know Marianne Pearl’s accent through and through enough to know if Angelina “mastered” it. Unless this movie critic is a family member or friend or close follower of Pearl’s, there is no real way of them knowing how masterful Angelina was at her friend’s accent.

By the way, there are many things to criticize about this woman beside her bad accents, trust.

They just love to criticize her accent in Alexander, like ANYONE knows what people sounded like back then. But they just KNOW it wasn’t like that! Lol.

You’re right about that. They will pick on anything wrong they can find because it’s her. However, because we couldn’t possibly know how people sounded back then, I think her accent in Alexander was unnecessary — she could have sounded her usual self and I’d be fine with that. I also found Gary Oldman’s “romanian” accent in Dracula ridiculous, laughable even…but most people harp on Keanu Reeves’s attempt at the British accent in that film. It’s a lot easier to find flaws when it comes to those you dislike.

I’m Brazilian and English is my second language, so unless it’s a very strong accent like the Australian, Scottish, cockney English, Irish (and so on) ones…I have a hard time trying to figure out from where a person comes. I’m not the greatest “accent expert” on internet boards — because (from what I’ve been reading) apparently everybody else is.

Quite frankly, when I’m going to watch a movie I’m more interested in its plot and overall dialogue rather than perfectly mastered accents (and because I’ve resigned to the fact not everybody can be Meryl Streep).

    @Jane:

She needs to gain some weight. I wish I could transfer some of mine over.

LOL! Funniest comment about her weight I’ve seen so far.

    @Cheyenne:

They made him look beyond a “regular guy”; in that trailer he looks like Joe the Plumber.

You take that back, Missy! You take that back RIGHT NOW! *points finger in a threatening way*

  101. nnn says:

Johnny Depp was never beautiful. He was a pretty boy during the 21th JS era, just like Brad Pitt, just like Tom Cruise and even just like Leo Di Caprio at a time. Pitt get some extra points because he is taller with a great body and a sexy walk.

But the three of them were never beautiful. Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe on the otherhand were both beautiful.

And i don’t get the appeal of Depp today at all, he looks dirty with nasty teeth, weird smile, has no masculine appeal and dress kinda androgynoeus while putting make up on at times.

He is a good actor though.

  102. mila says:

I think the accent issue is a tricky one. For example everyone was praising Meryl Streep’s accent/her Polish speaking skills in Sophie’s choice. It is supposed to be perfect. As a Polish person I couldn’t understand one sentence she spoke in polish in this movie:)Literally. And you know what? I didn’t care cause her performance was so great, her bad Polish didn’t matter. For me, acting is something more than imitating accents or gaining/losing weight. Those are just tricks but if your performance is soulless, then even the best accent imitation can’t save the role.

  103. nnn says:

Accent may be a problem for others but what i found the paramount of FAKERY in terms of credibility (since it’s the reason we use to critic accents) is having an american actor playing a german man in american english sounding totally AMERICAN.

If we have to equal accent criticism to lack of credibility, we have to go to the most obvious : doing a movie in english with amrican actors and their ACCENT when it’s to portray character who are not english speaker and american. That is beyond credible and plently of movies are done upon that script because they are most of the time HOLLYWOODIED. The accent critic is just a detail in that prospect.

Also, plenty of actors and actresses get accent all the time wrongly and none but Jolie get criticized. De Niro had an accent in the untouchable, Jodie Foster had an english accent in some of her movies, Peneloppe Cruz had a totally uncredible accent while portraying a brasilian girl when she launched her american career and don’t get me started with Ann Hattaway.

Again plenty of actors portray different accents, doing worse than Jolie and yet, none of them are stamped for life as ‘TERRIBLE ACCENT’.

  104. mln says:

I actually think the movie looks great and her accent is more a continental European accent than an English one ala Audrey Hepburn (whose accent was genuine). I am a fan of both of them so I am biased but I hope this movie does well. Because it looks better then the usual drivel, it actually has a plot and the heroine doesn’t look like an idiot who has to be humiliated and is constantly shrieking.

  105. Crash2GO2 says:

@mslewis: “I stand by what I said about Angelina sounding like a “sophisticated world traveler” because that is what she is. But I would not expect people who spend their lives on gossip sites to understand that. So, whatever. Try getting out of your basement and listening for a change.”

You stated you thought she wasn’t doing an accent at all, that that was her real speaking voice. THAT is what I found so hilarious, because it is so OBVIOUSLY UNTRUE as anyone who has listened to any of her UN speaches can tell you! Have you listened to any of them? I would assume that you have, being the fan that you are! I can hear quite well, although I do wonder about you. Angelina is doing an English accent in this clip, and doing a good job of it.

Make of that what you will. I’m sure you will find something objectionable. lol

  106. Crash2GO2 says:

@nnn: Glad you enjoyed the link. I look forward to delving into it when I have time. I do love accents so! Always have. Chaps me when people can’t tell the difference between Scottish, English, Irish or Australian. Augh!!

  107. Eve says:

    @Crash2GO2:

Chaps me when people can’t tell the difference between Scottish, English, Irish or Australian. Augh!!

Not sure if the snarky remark was directed at me (I felt like it was because the accents you mentioned were exactly the ones I previously did on my post), if it wasn’t, please ignore the following answer:

I can tell them (Scottish, English, Irish and Australian accents) apart. I know the differences between them because, as I stated in my comment # 103, they’re strong ones (as in singular, characteristic accents). That’s why I began with “Unless it’s a very strong accent like (…) I have a hard time…”. I clearly meant I was able to recognize that specific kind of accents, not the very subtle nuances of an accent that some people here can.

Example: I will be able to recognize a Southern American speaking, but I don’t think I’ll be so precise to determine if he/she is from Georgia or Alabama, get it now?

  108. wonderful says:

    ………

  109. Majosha says:

Eve, you’re not alone. I’m American with relatives in the South and even I wouldn’t be able to determine what state/region a person was from based solely on his/her accent.

MsLewis: If you got out more, you’d realize that people who travel the world don’t develop “sophisticated” accents because of it. That’s a Hollywood-ism that’s not at all based in reality. Don’t be so gullible.

  110. lela says:

he looks a little fat and not at his best but he’s always hot as ever…he’s Johnny! I saw him in Venice 2007, he0 was simoply wonderful, the best guy I’ve ever seen!

  111. Mairead says:

They just love to criticize her accent in Alexander, like ANYONE knows what people sounded like back then. But they just KNOW it wasn’t like that! Lol.

I’m an Angie fan and I think the accent is appalling! I may not know every inflection of Ancient northern Greek, but common sense alone should tell us it wasn’t like Bela Lugosi! And as for not knowing what Ancient Greek sounded like, I don’t think that 100% accurate. Plays from that period are still performed and the strict linguistic structures give a fair idea of pronunciation.
I think they should have just everyone speak in their own accent, on that film, shoe-horning Val Kilmer into an Irish accent was cringe-worthy.

As for their accents here, I think Angie makes a very decent stab at modern received pronunciation (upper middle class English) – the Audrey Hepburn comparison is apt, I think, it has a wider European feel to it. Johnny’s is a bit lower in the middle class pecking order. For those who know the old education system, she’s public school versus his grammar school.

  112. Mairead says:

Oh Crash – here’s a good test for your knowledge of accents 😉

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKMroEyB9c8

(I’d urge everyone else to watch it too though – don’t worry, no scary Brangeloonie nonsense)

  113. Crash2GO2 says:

    @Mairead: I’ve seen that – it’s a hoot!

@Eve: My comment was not intentionally snarky, because I hadn’t even read your post. Sorry to have offended!

Dear heavens, now that I’ve (found) and read your post, it did sound like I was picking on you! Seeing as how you are Brazilian I could hardly fault you for having difficulty with English accents could I??

  114. latam says:

and btw people there is no such thing as a british accent and wtf is a “continental european accent” americans have a strange view of europe.

She sounds like plenty of posh kids at my uni who have been to private schools and sometime international schools. Often they don’t have a regional dialect

  115. hyuch says:

Angie looks old and dried up with very damaged hair here. What were they thinking? I am assuming she was meant to be looking incredibly gorgeous. She just looks like a 40 year old lifetime smoker with veneers.

  116. Eve says:

@Eve: My comment was not intentionally snarky, because I hadn’t even read your post. Sorry to have offended!

It’s all right…an unfortunate coincidence then. But since I wasn’t sure I decided to (sort of) ask to make things clear. Oh, and I added that link you posted.

Dear heavens, now that I’ve (found) and read your post, it did sound like I was picking on you! Seeing as how you are Brazilian I could hardly fault you for having difficulty with English accents could I??

Sorry if I sounded a bit too defensive, but I’ve been mocked once just because I made a mistake while using a preposition — and that was related to an idiomatic expression, something that you can only learn with practice. The good thing that came out of this is that I’ll never make the same mistake again.

*By the way, both the girl’s posts and her friends’s on that particular site had more mistakes than mine yet I had never pointed them out.

  117. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

Alexander the Great lived over 2,300 years ago, sorry, but there’s no way that we could know exactly what they sounded like. The director probably told her what he wanted and she did it. I’m not saying it sounded good or bad, I’m saying if it was anyone else, they’d shrug it off and say, ‘well, I guess she and the film’s historians researched all the possible ancient, cultural influences in the region and that’s what they decided on.’ but since it’s her, it’s ‘she is TERRIBLE, what a bad accent!’ Whatever, it just smacks of petty bias to me.

If she can do Marianne Pearl’s Dutch/French/Cuban/African, I think it’s fair to say that she can handle upper class English who probably lived in several countries and speaks several languages. I think the problem is people think all English are supposed to sound like Mary friggin Poppins, and when they don’t, well, ZOMG, they just suck (unless of course, it’s anyone else, in which case, they usually get a pass.)

btw Crash, loved that accent site, thanks for the link!

  118. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

Mairead I almost died laughing at that. I’d seen the original, hee! “I’ve made a right tit out of meself”

  119. KC says:

Nope not feeling it. Was super looking forward to it when I heard about it and who was in it but the trailer is meh

  120. Crash2GO2 says:

I would never mock someone for making a mistake like that – in fact I think those kind of mistakes are charming. I can only assume that those doing the mocking must have felt inferior somehow themselves.

Since I only speak English, I am in awe of those who speak multiple languages. I’m just lucky to have an ear for accents and I enjoy hearing them. I really should be less full of myself about being able to tell the English ones apart though – big whoop. Took myself down a peg.

  121. Eve says:

    Crash2GO2:

It’s ok, I wasn’t sure anyway. Again, sorry if I sounded defensive.

I can only assume that those doing the mocking must have felt inferior somehow themselves.

Probably — it was the usual “let’s find something we can actually pick on when we don’t have better arguments ourselves” routine.

*About languages: I wish I could speak more, but the good courses are a way too expensive here. I still plan to learn German though (even if I have to do it on my own).

  122. Kim says:

So the director says AJ and JD got along great from the moment they met, that he has hours of bloopers where they are laughing and having so much fun. So I guess the tabloids were wrong. Like they were wrong when they said AJ’s kids never visited the Salt Set. That director and Liam talked about the kids often visiting the set and even playing with his son Sasha.
