Scarlett Johansson misses out on Cannes due to outlandish demands

I always saw Scarlett Johansson as very glamorous – yet very down to earth – sort of starlet. To hear her in interviews, she seems intelligent and appears to have depth rarely seen by celebrities her age. But apparently those qualities don’t preclude her from being a diva. She made such exorbitant demands of her accommodations at Cannes that the studio promoting her film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” was unable to foot the bill. Scarlett chose to stay home rather than compromise.

Scarlett Johansson was left at home in New York after a film studio refused to pay for the star’s bloated demands to attend the Cannes Film Festival to launch Woody Allen’s latest movie. The French branch of Warner Brothers Films, distributers of Vicky Cristina Barcelona in France, had spent weeks negotiating with Johansson’s representatives about flying her to Cannes.

They were willing, and happy, to pay for flights, hotel, provide a limousine, arrange for designers to show her gowns and for her to share hair and make-up designers with costars [Penelope] Cruz and [Rebecca] Hall. However, Johansson demanded her own exclusive make-up consultant at a cost of 5,000 Euros a day, which was felt a tad too much for a four day trip where looking after the star’s tresses and powdering her nose would cost a total of 20,000 Euros.

Then there was the problem over an hotel. The film’s director and his leading ladies were delighted to be staying in the centre of Cannes to make it easier for them to attend screenings, public events and to do interviews for TV and press. Johansson wanted to be at an hotel way out in the sticks, some 25 to 30 miles away.

“It was crazy. Penelope and Rebecca were going to be working very hard and it wasn’t acceptable that Scarlett would be having to come in from that distance every day, most likely turning up late and it would have thrown schedules into a lot of confusion. Also, I think, while Woody’s terribly fond of Scarlett, he was a little upset that she wasn’t being a team player”, an executive connected to the film told the Daily Mail.

Keep in mind the source is the Daily Mail, and they enjoy putting a particularly pessimistic and critical spin on any story they can. Yet Scarlett wasn’t at Cannes, even though she’s widely been reported to be Woody Allen’s newest muse. That’s quite the slap in the face to him. The film did get rave reviews, and many said it was a return to form for Allen. However she has agreed to do the traditional press and promotion for the film in the U.S.

Hopefully Scarlett won’t be demanding makeup artists that cost $10,000 a day for the press junket. Woody Allen famously said Scarlett wore too much makeup. Maybe he could send her some Maybelline and tell her to suck it up.

  4. I don’t buy it. I’ve read somewhere that she can’t stand P.Cruz, maybe that’s the real reason, I understand her, Cruz is a TOTAL bitch

  5. I always said she thought she was Woody’s muse. That talentless hoebag. Never cared for her, she also has a horible taste in music and a horrible singing voice, but she thinks she’s SO indie. Lameo.

  6. Monotone man voice. Ryan is too nice/good for her, he isn’t shallow and pessimistic.

  7. I don’t know why she’d make such a critical error in trying to build her acting career by repaying Woody like this; especially since it’s very very clear that her “singing” career 8O will not be going anywhere!

When I listened to (as much as I could stand of) her song “Falling Down”, I wanted to fall down myself…ewww!! 8O

  8. I like the production of Falling Down..just not her hollow voice.

If she didn’t go becasue she doesn;t like PC that’s rather unprofessional. I show up to work and I dislike a few coworkers too…

  9. She needs a makeup artist in ‘the know’ to tone down the bottom half of her face. Shading & contouring of that hideous jawline. That’s the REAL reason.

  11. She owes Woody her career.

After the Island, nobody wanted to work with her and Woody practically SAVED her career by casting her to his London films.

I understand that Cruz can be a bitch but that is no excuse to be ungrateful to Woody.

  14. Scarlett had filming obligations. She is in the middle of finishing another film. So this story is bogus. Imagine That!!!

  15. Wouldn’t it be part of her employment contract to appear in promotions for the film? Just curious.

I always assumed it was mandatory for stars to show up at premieres, media interviews and such.

  17. She’s a no talent skank with tits. Without those tits, she’d be working at a law firm or something. let’s quit lying about this idiot.

  18. Uhh… the only “filming obligations” she has is for Mary Queen of Scots - but that’s in pre-production so filming hasn’t commenced yet. Her other two most recent projects are in post. So… yeah. I don’t think she really had anything too pressing that was keeping her in the US for the duration of Cannes. Besides, Cannes is a big deal.

  19. She’s overrated, that’s the whole problem. Actually, so’s Penelope, Woody needs to stop having crushes and find some real actors for his films already…
