Colin Farrell is super skinny and acting crazy

Former bad boy Colin Farrell has a lot of eyebrows raised in his direction over his recent extreme weight loss. He says that he did it for his role in the upcoming film Triage, and even had a passage at the ready to explain his gaunt look to reporters.

Why is Colin Farrell looking so thin? At a recent press conference in Spain, the usually fit actor stunned reporters with his appearance – not to mention what he said. “I lost weight because my role demanded it,” Farrell told reporters simply of his upcoming film, Triage. “It was all very healthy.”

The actor also referred to the Scott Anderson novel on which Triage is based, reading the sentences that inspired his dramatic weight loss: “He went to the bathroom to shave. Once his beard was gone he saw that his face had become drawn. He pressed at the hollows beneath his eyes, the pronounced nubs of his cheekbones.”

“Amen,” director Danis Tanovic followed, breaking the tension. Everyone – including Farrell – laughed. Farrell spent five weeks in Alicante, Spain, filming Triage, in which he plays a war reporter in Bosnia in the early 1990s. The actor also spoke of his great respect for war reporters “spending time in war zones to tell stories that capture the imagination – as well as for their wives and girlfriends.”

I suppose that’s an acceptable reason for an actor, but holy cow. Talk about method acting. Farrell really took it to an extreme – his face is more than drawn. It’s gaunt. He’s also been demonstrating a bit more bizarre behavior, at least according to Page Six.

Colin Farrell may be taking his war-photographer role in “Triage” too far. The lusty leprechaun has lost so much weight for the part, he’s almost unrecognizable, and he was spotted Tuesday in New York acting loopy. “He was looking at ties in Bloomingdale’s and faking a Spanish accent to the cashier,” said our spy. “He was rail thin. One customer asked ‘Are you Colin?’ And he said, ‘Who’s that?’ in a weird fake voice and stormed off.” Farrell’s rep said “he’s in Spain shooting a film.”

[From Page Six]

Thank you so much, ever helpful Colin Farrell rep. We’re well aware he’s shooting a film in Spain. However due to a wonderful little invention called the airplane, that doesn’t mean that he can’t be in New York for a day or two. So just saying that he’s in Spain is certainly not a denial or an explanation. It’s just a wussy way of giving a “no comment.” I am totally going to spend the rest of today sitting outside of Bloomingdale’s in an attempt to spot Colin Farrell. Or a homeless drug addict. Because I could easily mistake one for the other at this point.

  2. Colin seems like the kind of guy who would live in the character he is playing if he really believed in the role.

I hope the movie is good. I love Colin.

  3. i just dont see how that is medically safe - or even justifiable. He looks ill, or on drugs. I wonder what the contract for doing a movie that demaded this would look like?

  4. He’s a method actor and obviously wants to give authenticity to the role. And so he’s not big on the fame game and isn’t too keen on being recognised when he’s out shopping? Refreshing, no?

  5. Christian Bale did something similar for the Machinist…I haven’t seen it, but the movie still pics I have seen are very scary! Moreso than this pic.

And then he bulked up for Batman Begins…

  6. i know - why is this considered “bizarre” behavior? i’m sure a ton of famous people deny being who they are, out in public, once in a while.

  7. Both Jared Leto and Christian Bale did pretty similar stuff… so this doesn’t shock me all that much.

  8. Lots of actors gain and lose weight for parts. But he really does look ill and I hope he finishes the role and eats a bunch of Big Macs. I like this guy.

  9. I know you didn’t just mention Christian Bale and Jared Leto in the same sentence?

    Phenomenal talent vs douchey tool??

  10. Also, I forgot to add and can’t edit my comment anymore:

Maybe he’s acting crazy BECAUSE of the lack of nutrition and not the other way around? (i.e. he lost the weight because he’s crazy)

  11. And re: headache, I guess I wasn’t all that clear. I wasn’t comparing Leto and Bale, all I meant was that Collin Farrell losing so much weight didn’t shock me all that much because it’s been done before.

Christian Bale did it in “the Machinist”. Jared Leto did it in “Chapter 27″.

Although Leto GAINED weight for his role too, so the majority of HIS weight loss may’ve just been him getting back to normal. Either way, is this like the aforementioned “hot chick acts ugly to win an award” phenomenon? (like Charlize in “Monster”)

  12. Elisha, I know you weren’t comparing the two. My brain was just trying to reconsile them being mentioned in the same sentence. Something like scratching your head when someone mentions filet mignon and frito pie.

Not too much different from black guy acts gangster to win an award. I am awating the Denzel autobio near the end of his life decrying this.

  13. Jared may be a douche but he’s not a terrible actor. He was amazing in my so called life … to his credit.

Christian Bale did it… and ot in a healthy way either. It was the scariest thing ever to see. Production on that movie got pushed back too and he had to stay that thin. He just didn’t eat. Its terrifying… I think thats the thinnest any actor has ever gotten for a role. It was beyond just getting really gaunt. It was like nearing a holocost victim. *shudder*

  14. Okay. I’ll admit it. Leto was great in Requiem for a dream.

But he’s still a douchey tool.

  15. Lick it, don't stick it:

Daniel Day Lewis is the king of the method actors. Though I don’t think he has had to do the extreme weight loss route yet.

Bale ate 2 eggs a day for the Machinist. Nice. I’m amazed his body didn’t shut down. I know they are medically supervised but still…try memorizing lines and edits when you’re just thinking about food.

  17. Matt Damon did something similar for the Talented Mr. Ripley. I think he lost something like 40 lbs. And Christian Bale’s weight loss for the Machinist was indeed pretty scary-looking.
