Ben Affleck trots out Jennifer Garner & the kids for a victory lap/photo op

wenn3009378

These are photos of Ben Affleck on his victory lap over the weekend with his wife Jennifer Garner and their two daughters. You’d think he would look much, much happier – he’s got a cute wife, cute kids, and his second time as director was a success. So successful, in fact, The Town took the #1 spot at the weekend box office. WOOHOO!

Actor/director Ben Affleck’s Warner Bros crime thriller is overperforming at the North American box office. Extrapolating from Friday’s $8.3M grosses and Saturday’s $9.4M (+12%), it will easily finish No. 1 this opening weekend when it was only predicted to come in 2nd. It received a “B+” CinemaScore. The R-rated movie’s estimated $23.6M was still well shy of the $28.6M of the same studio’s October 6, 2006, Boston crime thriller The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese. That “R”-rated film starred Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon and went on to win Best Picture Oscar. Affleck’s The Town is also in the running and stars Affleck, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) and Jon Hamm (Mad Men). Warner Bros even marketed it as The Departed 2. The studio, which financed The Town 50/50 with Legendary Pictures, paired its first trailer with Inception.

For his 2nd big directing effort after Gone Baby Gone also based on a book (Chuck Hogan’s Prince Of Thieves), Affleck promoted the heck out of it. He called movie journalists personally in Hollywood, NYC, flyover country, and eventually this month’s Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Even so, at the start of this week, expectations were for The Town to open in only second place to a teen movie — and trail by a large margin. But the tracking spiked as the big TV ad campaign kicked it up a notch in the last few days. So Warner Bros distribution czar Dan Fellman pushed up the print count. I think Hollywood underestimated The Town’s great buzz among starving adult audiences but also its coolness quotient for ages 18-to-25. Trust me, Affleck’s career trajectory rarely happens in Hollywood: from Oscar-winning co-writer to tabloid heartthrob to washed-up star after Gigli to budding director to hot actor/helmer with the #1 movie. What an Industry!

[From Deadline]

I saw The Town on Friday, and I was impressed with it for the most part. I’d give it a B+/A-, mostly for the wonderful performances by the awesome ensemble cast – Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, and Pete Postlethwaite were especially strong, but I was kind of meh on the two women, Blake Lively and Rebecca Hall. Blake really put in a good effort, trying to look and act and sound trashy, but… I don’t know. It all felt very affected. And Hall… well, her strange lips kind of took me out of the movie. Minor kvetching, I know. As for Ben Affleck as star and director. Well, he has some moments of self-indulgence. He keeps the camera on his face for too long, and there are a couple of moments where I was like, “Um, do we need to watch his broad shoulders walking around Charlestown for a full two minutes?” But overall, he gave a solid performance and he was a solid director. As for the story… well, there was great action, and some really wonderful car chases and really suspenseful, even shocking moments. There is one major, glaring contradiction in the story, and I have no idea if it’s in the book as well, or if nobody really thought it mattered in the screenplay or whatever. I don’t want to do a spoiler, but if you saw the movie and you want to talk about it, email me!

Back to Ben and Jennifer and the kids… why does Ben always look so miserable around his wife? For the love of God, Ben! If you’re going to do a photo-op with your family, own it. Of course, Jennifer doesn’t look thrilled either. Maybe she wasn’t up for these photo ops? Haha, yeah, who am I kidding? I wonder what that negotiation was like? “I want to be touching for at least one photo.” “No.” “Please!” “Okay, one photo, but then I’m just going to sulk the rest of the time.”

They both seems pretty serious people, I can relate. I don’t think they’re the type of family that are okay with paps taking pictures of their family, but it wouldn’t make sense to stage a photo op if they’re going to look all miserable. I don’t think it was staged though, they just looked like they’re at a park or something.

He never looks happy with his family but he might just take his family life seriously that he feels violated by seeing paps taking picture of Jennifer and their children.

  2. Snarf says:

Too be fair though, Garner isn’t exactly all smiles and sunshine in these photos either. (I would hate, HATE getting photographed all the time too).

  3. geenie says:

I saw The Town yesterday and once again, a movie is overrated. The movie gets a 6.5 out of 10 rating (C+) for effort. The screenplay definitely needed some editing and the movie wasn’t so convincing. However, Jon Hamm was excellent and Blake Lively was surprisingly good. The weakest link of the ensemble was Rebecca Hall; her acting was just okay and the way her character developed was not at all convincing. Affleck’s first directorial movie, Gone Baby Gone, was waaay better. Affleck has the promise of becoming a great director, but he’s no Clint Eastwood.

  4. Gwen says:

I think he looks good and I can’t wait to see the movie. I think this is a photo-op but I don’t know why they do them when they both look like they hate them. Is it just the way the game is?

  5. a says:

even the kids look sad. : (

  6. iKat says:

Or maybe they were just going for a walk and did NOT want the papparazzi following their every move and most probably taunting them in some form or another to get a reaction.
The best way to react? Give ’em dull pictures to deal with.
    Bravo Ben and Jen!

  7. guest says:

The kids look miserable with him

  8. cedar falls says:

Maybe they’re not happy because she got papped wearing the world’s most hideous brown cardigan? That’s not a “lap of honour” outfit!!

  9. lulu says:

You know, there was a whole series of photos and they looked REEEALLLY happy in most of them…

  10. mln says:

Geenie I so agree with your review. Hamm was awesome and Lively was good(I don’t even like typing that) but the movie was predictible had tons of cliches.

  11. Anna says:

You’re overdoing it. A victory lap photo op is something other than this. Just look at Tom Cruise and his contrived victory lap photo ops and you’ll know what I mean.

Ben and Jen are still my favourite couple in Hollywood. I think they look sweet, solid and they complement each other well. And my gosh do they make cute kids. I like that they are grounded and hard-working. There aren’t a lot like them in Hollywood.

  12. Julie says:

I like how you always post the photos where they look miserable, instead of the ones with the kids where they’re all happy and beaming and laughing.

  13. Kitten says:

I’m so happy I don’t have to deal with getting papped on a daily basis. I can’t even imagine what people would say if they saw my bitchface after my morning bus ride into work (for instance). Anyway, Jen’s outfit is very very bad. Very suburban mom-ish (no offense to moms).
I am dying to know what you thought the contradiction in The Town was, Kaiser! You should put it under a separate post with a spoiler alert warning.

I disagree with some of the reviews of Hamm’s performance. I thought he was pretty one-dimensional. In his defense, he only really had to play the token “straight man” but I just found him to be rather boring.

  14. Marjalane says:

Sheesh! All the moms at Saturday’s soccer games looked better than Jennifer Garner! What is she thinking? and before you rip me for saying how “normal” she is, this is a woman who’s in the entertainment industry- her husband spends ALOT of time with women who actually make an effort, and I am confident that old Jennifer has enough household help to allow herself time to do better than this!

Egads! My Grandma has better sweaters than that. This is a woman who is either overly confident about her self, or just doesn’t give a shit anymore. I feel sorry for any husband who comes home to ratty sweaters and worn out sneakers; It looks like she doesn’t even bother to brush her hair these days!

  15. Kate says:

I thought The Town was well done. Definitely better than a C+.
I actually thought it was an excellent screenplay. The movie moved between the various relationships and the action very well. My only real criticism is that Hamm’s character wasn’t well developed (no background there) and I didn’t think he was all that great. Renner was the star.

  16. Kaiser says:

Actually, there were photos at WENN & Fame from Ben & Jen on two different days, and they looked miserable in all of them. There were a few of Ben just with the kids where he looked slightly happy.

Also: if you want to talk about The Town, email me:

  17. Just a Poster says:

Um, do we need to watch his broad shoulders walking around Charlestown for a full two minutes?”

    umm Yes we do! LOL

That man is all sorts of fine!

And IMO the family has the “oh crap here they come again” look.

  18. Tess says:

Haven’t seen the movie. But if affleck’s supposed to be some criminal mastermind, that sounds problematic.

Maybe affleck and Renner should have exchanged roles.

  19. LittleFATMe says:

LOVE the watermelon clip right up in front on BabyFleck.

  20. KateNonymous says:

That sweater in the top photo looks like a maternity item. I’m not saying she’s pregnant–it just makes me wonder if she cares so little about her wardrobe that she grabbed something left over from a completely different body shape.

No idea what’s going on with her jeans in the same photo. They’re just ugly.

  21. Whatever says:

I bet it sucks getting papped all the time. Yeah, she looks like a mom, but we all do. None of us looks glamorous running errands, hauling the kids to school and all their activities, etc. Also, I’m not always smiling ear to ear when I’m doing these things, but I’m not miserable either. The same could be true for Jennifer, or the rumors and photo assumption about her husband could be getting to her and seeing a pap just means there is more coming. If I were in her position, I’d be thinking, “great, another bullshit story tomorrow.”

  22. Lisa Turtle says:

Where the heck do they live? Why is it so cold there?

The girls are wearing heavy winter coats and ben and jen have so many layers on.

    Answers… Anyone???

  23. mike says:

    heaven knows i’m miserable now

  24. RHONYC says:

    holy crap!

    violet NEVER looks sad!!!

    trouble! :-0

  25. Tiffany says:

I agree about Pete Postlethwaite, the man is an awesome actor. I though that The Hamm was great, he served his purpose as a foil to Affleck and the crew. Did not need a backstory, just needed to know that he was a man on a mission to take them down. Amazing that Affleck had two loves scenes, just throwing it out there. Am I the only one who went and saw this movie for The Hamm and Jeremy Renner alone. Affleck in front on the camera, I was indifferent.

  26. California Surfer says:

Too bad Matt Damon wasn’t in the movie, now that dude can act!

  27. JustBe says:

When I saw that first picture, I knew that Jennifer would be taking flack for ‘looking like a Mom’. She appears to be a ‘mom’ at a park/playground with her kids. Ben doesn’t seem to be dressed too sexy himself there either.
When I take my boys out, especially to the park, I don’t put on makeup, dress and heels. This is because I know I’ll be sliding on possibly muddy/dirty equipment and/or crouching/crawling/exploring with them. Why on earth would you wear your ‘good’ clothes to the playground.
I’m so tired of this constant pressure on women to appear/dress sexy ‘all the time’. If you’re married and/or in a committed relationship with kids, your man should be mature enough to understand that when I’m at the park, I’m going to dress comfortably. When we go on a date, I’ll glam it up for you just like I hope you would for me.
The women glammed up at the park are usually the ones sitting down watching the other adults. The ones dressed like ‘moms’ are usually on the equipment, pushing swings, enjoying their time with their kids, not caring about what others may think of their outfits.

    /rant

  28. Melissa says:

Why does Affleck always seem to wear a sport coat when he’s heading to the playground with his kids? What a tool!

And yes, they bundle those kids up way too much. Unless they were in Alaska, there’s no way their kids needed full-on winter coats to be outside this weekend.

  29. Tazina says:

Post some of the happy photos too so we get a more balanced view of how this family really looks.

  30. Kitten says:

@JustBe-I always defend Garner because she DOES take a lot of flack for wearing “normal” clothes. I don’t have a problem with her wearing sensible clothes to take the kids to the playground-but does sensible have to equal insanely ugly? I have tons of comfortable, functional clothes that I wear when walking around the city and running errands, they’re just not my dad’s hole-ridden jeans and my grandfather’s cardigan. She just wears a lot of bad outfits, that’s all.

  31. Ms_Fu says:

I think that the two of them actually look really cute. I don’t want to gauge the state of their relationship based on these pictures, but I hope that they are doing okay.

  32. melanie says:

Why are the kids bundled up so much? In the top picture there is a cute little boy smiling wearing what appears to be a thin t-shirt.

  33. Johnny'sGirl says:

@ms_fu… exactly what I was going to say…I think they are a great couple and if there is trouble, I want these two to work it out! And I do agree, she does look pregnant. Been thinking that for a month or so..

  34. Atticus says:

@Whatever – totally agree. That was my first thought, too, that they were bracing themselves for being papped and the inevitable speculation to ensue from these unwanted photos.

Maybe Violet got in trouble for something right before the pic was taken…RHONYC I agree, she never looks the least bit unhappy but she’s got the full on pout/sad face here! If something was up with her, that would account for the unhappy looks on everyone else. I know when my 4 year old daughter “has a moment” it makes the entire family glum.

  35. Steph says:

-Kitten- I agree with you, I also want to know what contradiction Kaiser is talking about. Good idea, do a seprate post 🙂

Anyway, I thought the movie was great! I give it a solid A. I really enjoyed it, (actually I was looking forward to it and was not disappointed at all). But yes there were too many long close ups of Affleck’s face but it wasn’t too bothersome.
The Hamm was wonderful too, as I expected. It was a great movie.

  36. Tiffany says:

    Kaiser,

Tried e-mailing you and they keep coming back to me. Are you receiving them?

  37. anon33 says:

I have no comment on this specific post but since it’s Town-related I will tell my story here.

My fiance, BFF and I saw it Saturday. Before we went into the theater mr anon asked could we please keep the Jon Hamm sighing and comments to a minimum, as we both are highly in lust with him, and he already hears about it every Sunday.

So, the first scene where Hamm appears plays…and LITERALLY every woman in the theater let out a swoon-y noise…it was audible and became collective, the general response was that loud. SO hilarious. I looked at mr anon and said “See??? It’s not just us!!”

Otherwise, all three of us loved the movie and were frankly a bit surprised by just how much we all liked it. B+.

  38. lucy2 says:

I don’t think they look all that miserable. They’re not grinning ear to ear, but…they’re just walking around.

I liked the movie a lot, I’d give it an A-. It was nothing groundbreaking or inventive, just a solid crime drama. Renner in particular was EXCELLENT. Didn’t care for Rebecca Hall much, but everyone else was pretty good.

  39. Nancito says:

I think the reason that everyone, in the top pic, is looking so downcast is because of Violet – she’s got a major pout face going on.

  40. Amy says:

In the majority of pictures I’ve seen, the kids usually look really happy. If you go to people.com, there is a picture of Violet and Jennifer and Violet is grinning from ear to ear pointing at the paparazzi. She seems to enjoy seeing them most of the time.

And I walk around looking serious most of the time. I’m not mad, it’s just how I look. Take a picture of an average person walking around and I bet they will not be smiling either.

  41. Madison says:

Jennifer Garner’s always up for a photo op, that girl never met a camera she didn’t like. In the pictures I saw Ben seemed more interested in his cell phone at the park than the kids, he seemed bored and looked like he could hardly wait for soccer to be over. The town was a really good movie but next time ben should let his ego cast someone else in the lead, like Matt Damon.

  42. Bee says:

I loved The Town. All of the performances were spot on. And I was really impressed that “The Hamm” was able to do so much with a relatively small role. The scene he had with Ben Affleck was my favorite in the movie. A definite must see.

  43. Lina says:

Movieline has a well worded review of “The Town” I think it more or less is saying what Kaiser is saying.

  44. Connie says:

I probably shouldn’t post this because I don’t want to start anything or be accused of starting anything – as a matter of fact I don’t want to post it. But it’s simply to say that I think people give Ben a hard time about his film choices and, yes, some haven’t been so great. But I think he convinced himself that his career needed redeeming and he just should have ignored all those people who criticized him (and still do I guess). People forget the flops for the most part.

I think his worst films are ones like “Reindeer Games” w/ Charlize Theron.

I also don’t think Gigli was that bad but looking at the original trailer I think they retooled it to capitalize on Ben (and his first Jennifer) rather than the arthouse comedy it truly was or aiming for. Because it’s no “Brown Bunny”

    Does that make sense?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBjXxwn9wo0

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UhCCHFZugE

Gigli was a blip (no worse and A LOT BETTER than Reindeer Games) and no one really brings that film up like they do Gigli over and over again. We get it!

He is just the kind of actor that makes bad to good films and vice versa. He would have gone on to “Gone, Baby, Gone” and “The Town.” Regardless of the bad films or whatever relationship he is in.

    That’s it.

  45. Connie says:

I feel so bad for Ben this was a terrible QA the interviewer and the questions chose by submitters were out of line. He bolted at the end.

See what I mean? People should talk about the film at hand and not this narrative that the media of Ben having been “ruined” he said it himself even if it was in front of a camera. Hee has always been the same Ben.

Poor guy but he handled quite well. Better than I thought.

  46. susanne says:

I think Ben got drunk the night before, and Jen made him go to the park to be pap’d early the next morning.

The kids have been listening to them fighting, and they hate to see mommy crying, so they’re clinging to her. Besides, he smells like old scotch and vomit.

That’s what I see in these pictures-

  47. Lou says:

OK susanne, im taking it that youre joking.
