Tony Romo earned Ashlee Simpson’s family 1.4 mill by attending wedding

When Tony Romo went to lunch at a paparazzi hot spot with Jessica Simpson on the Friday before her sister’s wedding, I assumed he was trying to help her save face after the news broke that he dumped her. Then when Romo went to Jessica’s sister Ashlee’s wedding as Jessica’s date, again it seemed like he felt sorry for Jessica and wanted to soften the blow of the breakup. Maybe they have an on-off thing, but the insider reports of their breakup were reported in the Chicago Sun Times and seemed true.

So why would Tony make a public reconciliation with Jessica Simpson before her sister’s wedding other than feeling sorry for her? Maybe because if he stayed away from the wedding, it would have cost Jessica’s family $1.4 million. TMZ reports that People Magazine’s contract with Joe Simpson for exclusive rights to Ashlee Simpson’s wedding photos included the stipulation that Tony Romo had to be at the wedding with Ashlee’s older sister Jessica:

Our moles tell us, when People cut a $1.4 deal for Ashlee’s wedding pics, there was a g-string attached — that Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo would be there.

It’s kinda what we were thinking. Who’d pay that for Ashlee Simpson alone. That’s why People wanted to put a pic of Jessica and Tony as an inset on the cover — they sell, Ashlee doesn’t.

Of course, the problem. Jessica and Tony split before the wedding. So you getting the picture why Tony showed? $$$$

[From TMZ]

Maybe that explains why People claimed ahead of the wedding to have a “source” that Tony Romo would attend. There must have been a lot of pressure on that guy to show up, and he swallowed his pride and did a nice thing for Jessica’s family. I guess that explains why he didn’t go on vacation with Jessica and her family afterwards.

But isn’t it a little sad for Ashlee, that - as commenter Elisha points out - she had “to have her wedding cover of People ruined with a huge picture of her sister freak dancing on it”?

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz are shown out in NY after the Caribbean honeymoon on 5/23/08, thanks to WENN.

  1. You are FAR more charitable than me, CB.

Far from thinking that he’s being a “nice guy” (who’s giving mixed signals if he truly did dump her - yeah it’s the “easy” thing to do in the short term rather than deal with tears, but makes things a damned sight messier in the long-run)

Rather I think the man got a cut of the $1.4 million deal. Being paid to attend the function with Jessica would make him basically an escort - and we all know what that’s another name for.

  2. I’m sorry but what planet do these people live on? In regular life, we only have people we WANT at our wedding. That doesn’t include people who just dumped my sister. Looking back on those wedding photos would be weird! And just for money!

  3. The Chimpson’s are a pretty pathetic group of people. I’d feel sorry for Pete but he isn’t too bright now is he?

  4. Stop hating on Tony Romo. For those of you who don’t watch football, he just signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys that could buy AND sell the entire Simpson family. He escorted Jessica Simpson because he’s a gentleman and true to his word. Nothing more. A “cut” of 1.4 million dollars wouldn’t affect Tony in the slightest. Joe Simpson probably played the ‘pity poor Ashley’ card.

  5. The Chicago reports claim that they had broken up. Not that Romo dumped Jess. The truth is they broke up mutually after that disastrous weekend in Vegas at the end of April.

This is why Jess didn’t seem too upset at Diddy’s party the following weekend. It’s also why she was obviously less than thrilled to see Romo at the infamous sushi luncheon (watch the X17 video).

I think Jess and Romo agreed to get through the wedding and make the best of it. My only question is did creepy Joe have to cut Romo in on the 1.4 million?

  6. I almost feel bad for Jess…seems like all she wants to do is find a guy, get married and settle down and noooo one will let her do that….she needs to find an average Joe and escape to a private island or something….

  7. Psshaw. If you’re a big enough asshole to have a wedding for profit in the first place, you deserve far worse than having your magazine cover ruined by your freak dancing sister.

  8. C’mon now–
It’s not TR hating, it’s business.
Regardless of how much his football contract is for, if the Simpsons offered him $150,000 to basically sit for an hour then go to a party, and paid his expenses, he’d be a fool not to take it.
That’s 10 years’ salary for a LOT of people in this country. And whether they’re “together” or not, it looks like he had fun.

It was kinda guaranteed that Jessica would be there, so Tony was the dealmaker. Shame the source didn’t tell Romo beforehand; he could’ve boosted his asking price.

  10. Tony is the victim in all this. Its was obvious they were so done stick a fork in it. Then he finds out, Joe pimped him out as well as his daughters. Tony could have told him to shove it. In Dallas, we know Tony is a great guy from a good family. He has a big heart and he went there even when he didn’t want to to spare Ashlee the embarrassment. Everything was staged. There were so many complaints to People that the mail out version had the inset removed.

Without Jessica, Ashlee would be flipping burgers
