Scarlett Johansson won’t be touring to support her new album Anywhere I Lay My Head, a collection of Tom Waits covers. According to reps, it’s because of her recent engagement and film commitments.
The Matchpoint star released her debut album last week, a collection of Tom Waits covers, but has no plans to follow up the LP with any live dates.
Johansson, who recently admitted to suffering from stagefright, had been rumored to be considering playing at a music festival this summer (08) - but has now ruled any future gigs.
A spokesman for Johansson’s record label Warner Music says, “It’s purely a hobby for her. Now that she’s engaged as well (to actor Ryan Reynolds) the opportunities seem to have become even more limited.”
Scarlett Johansson suffers from stage fright? That seems pretty unlikely for someone who lives her entire life in the public eye. Scarlett recently said that she had no strong desire to be a musician, but that “I thought of all of my friends who were struggling musicians (who) would kill for this opportunity, so I couldn’t really pass it up.”
I have my own idea too – her album isn’t anywhere near as successful as she might have hoped. Reviews have savaged it.
Rolling Stone, which gave Johansson a mediocre 2.5 stars out of 5, complains, “Johansson’s voice is unremarkable and her pitch sometimes unsteady; she’s a faintly goth Marilyn Manson lost in a sonic fog.”
Entertainment Weekly was also less than complimentary, giving the project an average “C” grade and remarking that her “expressionless voice” was concealed “deeply in the druggy ambiance.”
If you haven’t heard the album, the critics are fair. It really just washes over you in an atmospheric monotone. Which is fine, if you like that kind of thing. I’m no judge – I actually liked Britney’s latest release!
I’m sorry that Scarlett’s album wasn’t more interesting, but I’m glad it’s going to take her back to film. Scarlett has a couple of films in the pipeline for the next year, including playing the title role in Mary, Queen of Scots.
Picture note by Celebitchy: Scarlett Johansson is shown at the premiere of The Other Boleyn Girl in London on 2/19/08, thanks to WENN.

She should stick to acting, her voice is shall we say an ‘acquired taste’. But then again singing Tom Waits is not for the everyone.

I hate actresses that can barely act that try to branch out into other mediums. ScarJo as Mary, Queen of Scots? She butchers an English accent savagely—I can only imagine how she’ll ruin a Scottish one!

But did anyone really expect her to tour & promote it? She said all along that it was just a neat project that happened to come her way.

Im pretty sure it was said before the LP came out that she wouldn’t tour with it.
There is no shame in liking britneys latest at least it has peronality and is well produced … scarlet’s is just so bland.

I agree with EW - we’ve heard her “expressionless voice” in her movies, why do we need more of the same on a CD? She cannot act. I think she’s lovely to look at on screen and movies like “Lost In Translation” do her well -long camera shots with no dialogue embue her acting with the substance it just does not have. Unfortunately for her, there wasn’t anyplace to hide in the music …and the results are there for all to hear.

Bullshit. She won’t tour because she can’t sing. Imagine live. That would be even worse.
-
She never intended to tour, no matter what the reason

What is an LP?

Thank God!

It’s easy to understand the reason she won’t be touring: studio doctored voices don’t sound good live. I don’t even think she sounds good on her album imo. Pretty faces are better with closed mouths.

Thank god! she’s awful…her voice is sooo boring!

i wouldn’t have thought anyone could make tom waits songs boring but scarlett managed to do it. *yawn*

Who told her she could sing ?? She sounds a bit like Tiny Tim (remember him?)

I love her, she has such a great body. Not stick thin like the other actresses.
