Christina Aguilera calls partying criticism “mean spirited”

On Tuesday MSat wrote a story that incited a lot of debate asking why new mom Christina Aguilera is able to go out partying and get wasted while Nicole Richie gets vilified for just making an appearance. Commenters Jag and Jenna mentioned that Aguilera’s clownish face doesn’t sell magazines while Nicole Richie does. Richie’s partying gets noticed as she’s a former drug addict and has a DUI under her belt, as many of you pointed out. A lot of people also noted that Aguilera does get trashed by the press for getting visibly drunk.

MSat’s position on the story, one that I share, is that of course Aguilera should be able to go out if she wants to, but that it’s not fair that Nicole Richie gets blasted for going to events while Aguilera gets a pass for being wild and drunk.

Now Aguilera has responded to people saying she’s a bad mom or should somehow stay home every night with her nearly five-month-old son, Max. She says that she’s home with him all day every day and would like some time out at night with her husband without people jumping on her for it. But she’s used to the criticism anyway as a famous person:

“Once in a while, if I want to go out and have a mommy-daddy night with my husband, I am more than allowed to do that,” the singer – who gave birth to son Max Liron in January – told Access Hollywood…

“I spend all day with my son,” Aguilera, 27, told the TV show – adding that any criticism of her late-night outings with husband Jordan Bratman is downright “mean spirited.”

“Everybody has an opinion and everybody sometimes wants to cause drama,” she said. “But it’s something that comes with what you do and I learned that very early on.”

[From People.com]

Aguilera is not my favorite person, but I agree with her. When you become a mom, people want to butt in and tell you what you should do and how you should raise your child. It doesn’t seem like the wisest idea to get wasted at a high-profile club if you’re famous, but that’s her prerogative and it’s not like she’s neglecting her son. And if she was, she has a nanny and help and you assuume he’s getting good care.

As a mom, especially when my son was younger than a year old, I did not chose to go out to bars or clubs and I probably didn’t get enough date nights with my husband, either. I can say that Aguilera looks foolish cutting loose, but I wouldn’t call her a bad mom and as MSat said she’s just blowing off steam.

Christina Aguilera is shown yesterday outside a friend’s house, where there was a party for her husband’s birthday, thanks to WENN.

    Well, I’ll be… no cleavage.

You know, CB, I never got that kind of time with my husband either. She is able to go out b/c of her money situation. If she were in our place, she wouldn’t be going out every night. When I had my kids and I wanted a night to myself, it usually consisted of a bath, a chance to fix myself back up again. I didn’t/don’t like to be away for too long. The problem with Christina is it looks like she is going out a few times a week and getting totally skunked. How can you take care of your baby properly when you can’t see past that headache? I do agree that it her life and her choice, however strange it seems to other parents.

I’m not buying it. Its a cop out because she’s not ready to be a mother, period. When I had my kid, I wasn’t ready to be away from her for six weeks. My only time away from her was a quick trip to Costco. I loved her and missed her when I was away, and even if I were to go out and have a drink, I wouldn’t get to the point where if when I returned home and went to sleep that I’d be so boozy and passed out that I wouldn’t be able to hear her cry or respond in a responsible (and SOBER) fashion. I didn’t want her smelling alcohol on my breath, even if it was only one drink, even if she was only a baby. Obviously, Christina’s got some great hired help and good for her, but to me its still a crying shame and I don’t think she should be left off the hook. Passing your kid off to the nanny to go get drunk four nights a week, is not a responsible, or even interested, parent.

I don’t think it was ever stated that this is going on 4 nights a week. Or maybe I’m blind.

An occasional night out is a GOOD thing. Who decided that when you become a mother you can no longer have a good time without the child being there? Who decided that when you become a mother you stop being a woman?

My son is almost 8 months old and I’ve never left him for more than 4-5 hours at a time..and that was with my husband during the day. But I will have to say that if I had the resources like Christina , my husband and I would have more time out for ourselves.

I think it’s great that she goes out and dresses sexy. So what if she shows cleavage..Like MomInNH said, you don’t stop becoming a woman once you become a mother. You still have to feel good about yourself and show your husband you’ve still got it. The mistake is when you start letting yourself go and thinking, “A mom shouldn’t be this or that.” It’s not liking she’s dressing like this to church. She’s at a club..relax!

I don’t really think it’s a moral issue, just priorities. There’s a point in time when the most important thing is having fun, and a time when your kids are the most important thing – the people who are taking issue just don’t think they should exist during the same period.

I don’t think she’s a bad mother, but I still feel bad for her kid. Just look at that picture of her air-humping with the clown makeup and the drunken fish look, and ask yourself one question: how would you feel if that was YOUR mother?

  7. JennGush says:

I agree that she should be able to go out and have time to herself. My question is whatever happened to taking a walk, going to get a mani or pedi or going to the park and reading a book? I think it’s fine if she wants to go out to a bar and have a drink every ONCE IN A WHILE. But it seems like that is all she ever does. It does seem like everytime there are pictures posted of her out and about she has her boobs hanging out and is piss drunk. Of course, I don’t go out with her so I don’t really know how much she drinks but, she always seems pretty trashed. Like cc said, how can you take care of your child the next morning if you have a hangover? The answer, a nanny. One more thing, she seriously needs to see a makeup consultant. She looks like she uses neon puffy paint as lipstick!

  8. Holly says:

Well MominNH maybe you haven’t been paying close enough attention to the pap photos.

Theres a big diff between occasionally going out, and being photographed falling down on your face drunk at four am on several occasions. Yeah, she’s a real stand up person, therefore a great mother.

As for her dressing sexy, yeah she’s still a woman, and mothers are still women, but jesus christ have some self respect.

Most of you sound like sad washed up mommies who regret their decisions and want to justify your own longing for the good ole childless days, envying the women who can afford to go out and leave the tots at home and party like they don’t have any responsibilities. (“Prove to your husband you still got it?” Thats the saddest thing I’ve ever heard) You can’t have it both ways. Dressing like a whore and falling out of clubs stone drunk, does not sound to me like an upright responsible woman ready to raise her child right. She sounds like every immature woman who has a sense of entitlement about having children and still being a tarted up skank who can hit the town when she damn well feels like it.

BIG difference between going out occasionally in a nice dress with your husband for a glass of wine and a nice night out….and dressing like an Italian mafioso’s tacky little sister and drinking to excess every night you muster up an excuse to. Don’t believe me? Browse the WENN or Splash News photos any day of the week.

Almost didn’t’ recognize her without the giant yellow cannons of motherhood bouncing around in full view of the camera.

  10. Lara says:

As a mom of a six-month old, I think it is important to go out and have fun..Xtina is still young and for her to go from partying whenever she wanted to, etc. to staying home every night is a big overnight change. A new mom needs to have some semblance of her former life and make appropriate, responsible changes due to the choices she made to have a child (I’ve gone out with friends for an evening and it is great to have a break…you come home refreshed and rejeuvanated). I doubt when Christina decided to have a child she thought she would never go to a party again…

what I have major issue with is her ridiculous cleavage that has terrorized us since that awful Ellen appearance. That needs to go away!! And it’s nice to see a pic of her without those “yellow cannons of motherhood” lol…thanks vdantev for that hilarious comment!

  11. Jenna says:

    Yay! I was mentioned hahaha

I am surprised her wonky boobs weren’t out. Go Christina! 🙄

  12. SallySays says:

    Holly, and the rest…damn!

After my child was born I was working full time when she was 4 weeks old. When she was 6 weeks old I was working 60 hour weeks for the next year! I never got a break!(I don’t even know if I wanted a break though.)

I lost the 50 pounds I gained by the time she was 4-5 weeks (because I breast fed)–I never got a break until she was almost 2 years, when I started college and they had a daycare (but only allowed children 2 yrs and up.)

I would have loved some free time, and I know that if I had the money I could have actually gotten it. I have never liked to party, but to go out sometimes would have been so good!

By the way–people dissin her on her makeup–F-U-C-K -Y-O-U!! She looks good (usually.) Some of us Femmes actually like wearing makeup–it makes you look better (and when you don’t have it on, guys appreciate your looks *both with and without makeup* more)

She doesn’t look like a clown!!! Have you eva been to a club, or even a strip club (you know, where guys PAY to look at females)The females there care about thier looks and try to look attractive….you know…wear makeup!Bitches really…put some effort into your looks!! It’s not that hard. But be aware, bitches will hate on you….

  13. Jag says:

LOL Okay… first off, I did NOT call Christina’s face clownish; I didn’t mention her face at all. (I happen to think she’s beautiful and yes, sometimes she does wear too much makeup.) The “rest of the package” I mentioned was her entire image – which as has been stated here – seems to be mostly cleavage, low cut dresses, and partying, since giving birth. In contrast, Nicole has been photographed with her man, pushing the baby stroller quite frequently. That is quite a difference, and that’s the point I was trying to make, due to the fact that Christina hasn’t been villified for the littlest thing, like Nicole.

Of course a mother needs time out, away from the baby. I don’t agree that mothers should go out and party until late every week. Being a mother is a responsibility that I don’t have, due to the fact that I don’t want to devote my life to another being just yet. Having a young child means cutting back on some things – like partying until you’re wasted – in my opinion. How can you care for a child in that state, especially if it’s once or twice a week? I don’t understand that mode of thinking.

Hopefully, that clears things up a bit. Here’s what I said, in the event you don’t want to look it up: “I agree… Considering how badly her cover with her baby did on a magazine, it does seem people give her a hard time about things. She has an amazing voice, but the rest of the package leaves a lot to be desired – now more than ever, since she isn’t appearing to be the motherly type. (How many pictures have we seen of Nicole pushing her baby stroller lately? How many of Christina? Yep… no contest.) “

The tabs like to be stuck in a 1950s mentality cause it allows them to feign shock — SHOCK! — at perfectly ordinary and normal behavior. Bashing women is a perk.

So (according to tabs) pregnant women can’t eat ice cream EVER! Mothers can never DRINK or PARTY again! And one date = a relationship, therefore four dates with four different guys mean you’re a slut.

Yikes. I mean go 1st amendment and all, but you gotta keep beating that stuff back or we’re gonna backslide in reality!
