Freida Pinto’s Alexander McQueen dress: gorgeous or tragic?

A funny thing happened when I was looking through the full set of photos from the London premiere of Miral (Julien Schnabel’s new film): I had to really hunt for photos of Freida Pinto’s full body shot. Nearly all of the photos of Freida were close-ups of her face – it’s like photographers are so enchanted with her beauty, they forget to do their jobs and get some fashion pics. Anyway, Freida is wearing Alexander McQueen – black with gold detailing. I really, really like it – it’s oddly subdued and edited for a McQueen piece. Also: I love her hair, and her makeup is awesome. Well done, Freida.

Freida’s boyfriend Dev Patel didn’t walk the red carpet with her – and he wasn’t even in town. But no worries about the couple – Freida told the red carpet journalists that Dev is filming in India: “I’m here until tomorrow, so there’s no way I can celebrate my birthday in India, and that’s where Dev is filming. But my family are here so I’m going to just celebrate with them a bit later.” She turned 26 years old yesterday.

As for the movie, when hearing or reading the cold, dry description, it sounds very angsty and upsetting. It’s about a Palestinian girl growing up in an orphanage/school, and she falls in love with a Palestinian freedom fighter/terrorist (the lines are blurred, what can I say) just before the first Intifada, circa mid 1980s, or at least that‘s what it seems like in the film, although the first Intifada is defined as starting in 1987. The film is based on a book by Palestinian journalist Rula Jerbeal. Pinto told journalists, “It is a film about hope. It is a film about perseverance. It’s a film about education being key to devote to peace. And Rula’s mentioned this many times, and I think it’s really beautiful, she said Gandhi said this, the father of my nation. ‘There’s no way to peace, peace is the way.’ And I think it’s as straight forward as that.” The film is getting so-so-reviews – one critic calls it “plodding” but there is much admiration for trying to tell the story of this period of Middle East history through the eyes of a young Palestinian woman. Here’s the trailer:

I think it looks interesting. Rental-worthy. Guess who else was at the premiere? Benecio del Toro, looking rough!

  3. Anna says:

It’s not the prettiest dress I’ve ever seen, but it’s definitely not tragic. She wears it really well!

  4. Kaboom says:

The level of the belt makes her look like a midget on stilts by distorting proportions.

  5. Anaya says:

It’s a gorgeous dress worn by a gorgeous woman.

  6. ziggy says:

she is a beauty. she noted in her ‘vogue’ cover interview that she wears a size 12 shoe (at 5’7). who would’ve guessed?

  7. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    Very pretty

  8. Eleonor says:

Love the dress, but I think it doesn’t flatter her.

  9. Lisa says:

The dress looks cheap and it’s ugly imo.

  10. Jean says:

With a face like that, she can wear anything and make it look good.

  11. george says:

magic is gone, window is closed

  12. Bina says:

Hmmm… she doesn’t look Palestinian at all, and that’s a horrible accent. I’m also wondering why they ripped off the music from “Bombay” (a film about the Muslim-Hindu riots in Bombay in the early 1990s) composed by A. R. Rahman, who won the Oscar for the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. Oh well. The dress is pretty, I guess that’s all that matters.

  13. guesty says:

    tragic.

  14. Fabianne says:

I’m not a fan of McQueen’s designs, but I find this dress very pretty and elegant.

  15. Arianna says:

i really like this and it looks great on her!

  16. Chris says:

I think she looks stunning. The dress is gorgeous.

  17. MYLIE1313 says:

The dress looks lke a costume, tragic.

  18. Richi says:

I Totally agree wz Bina…she looks 100% Indian and fakes an accent just ‘coz she is dating Dev..She is just a normal looking babe there are much prettier women in Indian cinema who would blow every one’s mind of in beauty & acting! MEHHH!!!!

  19. Mia says:

Nice, but a little too matchy-matchy overall.

  20. whatisay says:

I don’t find her attractive at all….she is ok, but I would not look twice.

  21. original kate says:

i love this look for her, very old hollywood. she always looks very pretty and put together. benicio looks hawt as hell – rough or not, i’d hit it like there is no tomorrow.

  22. I Choose Me says:

I think it’s gorgeous. Beautiful woman rocking a fantastic outfit. Her shoes are a little too big but its barely noticeable. Is the purse also McQueen?

  23. grace says:

this girl is amazingly beautiful – and I am not easily impressed with one’s beauty.
but the dress looks cheap, imho.

  24. Christie says:

Why does it have to be either gorgeous or tragic? It’s perfectly fine, imo, on her. It’s one of those dresses that you have to have the right skin tone, shape, and beauty to get away with. It WOULD be tragic on me.

  25. Aamir khan says:

All those indians who keep calling her average looking needs to understand that Ms.pinto is appreciated in the west because she corresponds to there beauty ideals. All those so called indian beauties like kareena or katrina are just average looking to americans.

  26. Mitzi says:

If that’s Benicio looking “rough”, have him scrubbed up and sent to my boudoir…

  27. Bina says:

Freida Pinto is an attractive girl. But she doesn’t look terribly Western to me… maybe she’s a bit bony and angular, as opposed to soft and rounded, which is what Indians prefer. Katrina Kaif is supposed to have that “Western” look, same with Yana Gupta… (The height of Indian beauty is dark long hair, white skin, a prominent nose, and luscious eyes.)

She does have terrible legs, though.

  28. Bina says:

And okay, NOT ON TOPIC AT ALL, before you flame me, but WTF happened to Uma Thurman’s face? Can someone please help me with this one? I’ve just seen recent photos and I’m shocked!!

  29. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz says:

Gorgeous! She looks fabulous. But then again, when doesn’t she?

  30. skibunny says:

I dont really care for the dress but this girl is absolutley stunning!

Bina: sorry if I got your name wrong. Where did you see pictures of Uma?

  31. xxodettexx says:

i am on the “gorgeous” train!

  32. Shawna says:

Beautiful dress! It’s a great rewrite of the simple empire waist.

  33. Jello says:

Frida looks gorgeous. The film looks…so, so. As for Uma, those photos have got to be “shopped.”

  34. bettie says:

It’s just meh… Black is too overwhelming for her.

  35. Trustiva says:

Wow, Benicio is looking good. I love the boyish hair and his intense eyes. It seems he lost some weight.

    I love his look here:

  36. Gabriela says:

Aaaaah I’d kill for that skin, that face!

  37. Pia says:

Fantastic. The fact that she’s incredibly beautiful doesn’t hurt.

  38. Mrs K says:

#27 Yana Gupta is no Indian, she is Czech!

  39. Shazz says:

totally agree with #18 – totally MEH! there are tons of women way hotter and more talented than her in India, its disappointing to see them and their amazing beauty being represented to the western world by this average looking girl 🙁
