Over the weekend, I read this bitchy report from The Daily Mail – they claimed that after Carey Mulligan and Shia LaBeouf split, Carey had moved out of Shia’s mansion and was “slumming it” at a cheap Best Western in LA while she completed work on Drive, the film that she’s doing with Ryan Gosling. The point of The Mail’s piece was “Isn’t it pathetic that an Oscar-nominated actress would choose budget lodgings?” Well, anyway, last night Carey attended the Hollywood Film Awards, and she confirmed the Best Western report in her standard adorable way, and she also pretty much confirmed that she and Shia are over:

Carey Mulligan and Shia LaBeouf have said goodbye to their romance, PEOPLE has confirmed. The Transformers star and the Never Let Me Go actress, who were first linked in August 2009 after being spotted kissing at a New York restaurant, called it quits “some time ago,” according to sources.

Since the split, Mulligan has been in Los Angeles shooting the indie film Drive, opposite Ryan Gosling. She checked in to the Best Western Hollywood Hills Hotel for a few days while the film shot nearby.

“I don’t know why people are so down on the Best Western,” Mulligan joked to PEOPLE at Monday’s Hollywood Film Awards in L.A., where she presented her Never Let Me Go costar Andrew Garfield with an award. “They have the best sweet potato fries I’ve ever had.”

The hotel is known for its 101 Coffee Shop, which was featured in 1996’s Swingers and is a popular late night diner for young Hollywood.

“I don’t know why people are so down on the Best Western.” I love that. And hey, it could totally be worse: she could be staying at the Chateau Marmont, you know? She’s young, she’s cool, she’s working hard – why not spend your time in comfortable accommodations on a budget? Sidenote: did anyone read her profile in the October Vogue? She also proudly takes public transport in whatever city she’s in. When Warren Beatty found out she was taking the bus to meetings, he offered to chauffeur her around town too. How could you not? I would offer her a ride too.

i like her, and think its great that she isn’t wasting her money on extravagant accommodations. its rather refreshing.

  2. Embee says:

    What an adorable young lady.

  3. im awful says:

when i grow up, i wanna be just like her.

  4. Marjalane says:

O.K., after reading this, maybe she would be a good match for Ryan Gosling. She sounds nice and down to earth.

  5. aenflex says:

alright well i am starting to like her personality.

  6. bubbles says:

I used to go there quite a bit. it’s pretty inconspicuous and low key, but cool.

  7. Brittney says:

I love her even more now. She’s actively preventing herself from falling into any of the destructive patterns of her peers… by just living her life.

  8. Diane says:

She’s a doll and it’s nice that she is so grounded and REAL!

  9. Kitten says:

Speaking as someone who waited 20 minutes for the bus this AM, only to get on and be squeezed in like sardines on a hot and humid morning with no windows open, I highly doubt that she takes public transportation that often. Of course, it’s great to take it when you don’t HAVE to take it every single day so PLEASE stop with the “I take public tranpo voluntarily” crap. It’s insulting to shlubs like me that have no choice in the matter. Hell, she can take the bus and loan me her chauffeur is she wants. I’ll gladly make the trade!
PS It took my bus 35 minutes to go 2 miles this morning!

  10. brin says:

Hope she doesn’t change….she is a true free spirit….love that!!!!

  11. Kimmm says:

She is absolutely growing on me . I guess Cosmo was right for once , those ” body language ” experts definitely saw something wrong vibe wise on how Shia was towards Carey .

    Shia is a douche .

  12. Oi says:

Good for her. She didn’t try to be cool about it, she didn’t trash best western, she didn’t try to convince us of how down to earth she is.

  13. Samigirl says:

    <3 her! Good for her1

  14. Kimmm says:

    @ Kitten .

Sounds like you take the MTA in NYC huh ? It’s a bitch and a half these days and with the raised fares it’s ridiculous .

  15. mln says:

I have been there too its actually quite nice for normal folks but so lowkey for an actress. I like her alot I think (for now) she is the real deal.

  16. mslewis says:

Best Western is a very nice hotel chain and the one Carey stayed in is especially nice. TheDailyFail doesn’t know what they are talking about.

And, Kitten, there are a lot of actors and others (the Mayor of NY, for instance) who take public transportation, especially in New York. It’s much faster to take the subway than going by taxi above ground. Besides that, it’s probably fun for someone from another country to travel by public transportation in order to really get into the spirit of America.

And, totally agree, Carey Mulligan sounds like a terrific young woman. She deserves way better than Shia.

  17. Kitten says:

@Kimmm-I take the MBTA in Boston and it is HORRIBLE! In keeping with the “misery loves company” scenario, I’m glad to hear that NYC isn’t much better 🙂 I literally wanted to scream this morning. And it’s the same thing out here-every year they raise the cost of fare but service never improves. Sorry I know this is all off-topic but it just drives me crazy!! Just had to vent….

  18. Laura says:

    This makes me heart her.

  19. Zelda says:

    Still LOVE that hair cut.

  20. LOVE ANGELINA says:

    I am with Kitten.

People for some reason need celebs to do stuff just like them or be “down to earth” in order to like them. Now I don’t want the celeb to be an A-hole but come on I like you because your successful and have a lifestyle I aspire to. I don’t need anything extravagant or overpriced but if I didn’t have to take a bus you better believe my ass wouldn’t be on one.

I will add that Carey isn’t a highly paid actress and is brand new and maybe she isn’t making money yet or used to this world. Its kinda cute.

Oh and sorry about Carey and Shia but she can’t have Ryan Gosling.

  21. tango says:

Staying at the Best Western makes up for that ugly dress she’s wearing. Go girl!

  22. mln says:

@mslewis as someone who has lived in NY and LA and taken public transportation in both towns there is not any comparision.
the LA public bus system is draconian and only the destitute are taking it. It may have slightly improved in the last few years but it isn’t anything like the NY transit which is much quicker than taking a car across NY and is used by almost everyone except tourists.

  23. TG says:

@Kitten – I take public transport too for work and even though often it is annoying sometimes I will never drive by choice. I figure I save thousands of dollars a year in gas and car repairs so the trade off is a nobrainer to me and I can read on the bus/metro instead of cursing the traffic in my car.

  24. OtherChris says:

She’s smart. Save that money for when Hollywood turns on you so you don’t have to whore it out on Dancing with the Stars.

    I like her.

  25. terryo says:

Not conventionally beautiful but there is a very sexy innocent cuteness about Carey that turns me and most men on. Shia is an idiot for letting her slip away.

  26. danielle says:

Cute story. I really like her hair here too.

  27. Mari says:

@OtherChris- that made my morning! Thank you!

  28. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    See Racoon No Pants….

This is a real young lady. She’s a sweetie!

  29. Boombeeba says:

You go Carey! Wool woop woop (o_~)

  30. Iggles says:

    @ TG:
“I take public transport too for work and even though often it is annoying sometimes I will never drive by choice. I figure I save thousands of dollars a year in gas and car repairs so the trade off is a nobrainer to me and I can read on the bus/metro instead of cursing the traffic in my car.”

I was born and raised here. It’s a way of life. I took a taxi last night and at was terrible! With the traffic it wasn’t much faster than the subway! Only more expensive and the dude’s credit card machine was broken. Grrr..

Takes me 30mins to get downtown via the local train. One flat rate (even though it bugs that it keeps increasing!)

  31. Kbomb says:

    Cute as a button.

  32. She’s growing on me too, and yes keep the fuck away from the venus fly trap that is the Chateau Marmont.

  33. Liana says:

I would never take a limo or car in NY unless I absolutely HAD to. Public transportation all the way!! However, in LA, I won’t take public transportation because it sucks.

  34. Kitten says:

We’re talking about the difference between trains and buses, guys. Buses go above ground so traffic-wise, there’s really no difference between that and a cab except in a cab you’re not wedged between two strangers and you’re not stopping every block to pick up MORE strangers. But yeah, if the train was convenient for me I would definitely take it.
    And yeah I know I’m a bitter b*tch 🙂

  35. Jeri says:

Wow. She is cool, talented, beautiful & unpretensious.

  36. original kate says:

lovely girl, lovely outfit, lovely attitude.

i love mass transit, too. i’ve lived on the east coast and now on the west coast and let me tell you, the east coast mass transit systems are worlds better than the west. i live in seattle which has a lame bus system and no subway/streetcar/trolley system. which makes me laugh because so many people here are pretentious twits who talk about being so green and groovy and yet they can’t get it together to build mass transit.

  37. TQB says:

I love this just from the “no one can make you feel inferior without your consent” standpoint. See how it’s done, famous people? Tell the truth and make it a non-issue. I hope the Daily Mail feels stupid.

  38. Lardy Chops says:

As long as LiLo doesn’t check in to the same hotel, she’ll be fine.

  39. Jeri says:

@original Kate – I live in Seattle too. Just don’t go East or West. Buses only go N & S.

  40. RHONYC says:

i was about to say that a least she wasn’t staying at the one at newark airport, but alas i have to eat my words…our best western is actually NICER than the one in hollywood. the rooms are anyway. lol 🙂

  41. MuMu says:

I’m glad she broke up with him as she’s WAY too good for that asshat.

  42. cprincess says:

The Best Western shes talking about is hipster central and the coffee shop is great- but hardly a regular old Best Western coffee shop!
Aside from that-has anyone else seen
    Never Let Me Go?
OMG-its stunning, depressing, disturbing and haunting-I had no idea what the story was and I saw the trailer and thought it looked good and reminded me of my school days in England-the trailer did not reveal the plot and as Im apparently the only person who went to see it who had not read the book-I had no idea…
I still cant stop thinking about it a week later and Im going to go to see it again..-I CANT REMEMBER THE LAST TIME A MOVIE HAD SUCH A PROFOUND EFFECT ON ME..

  43. mln says:

@cprincess read the book it is brilliant-I didn’t watch the movie because I just couldn’t go there again but the book is always better than the movie. I loved her in An Education though. She is genuinely talented.

  44. Bullett says:

every guy that ever had a girl he was fed up with for always beginning every sentence with ‘give me, give me, give me,’ or ‘I want, I want, I want’, just fell in love 🙂

LeTushy’s loss is definitely her gain (and mine, as well).

  45. cprincess says:

    #43
OMG -I cannot stop thinking about it!
FYI -general consensus in reading on line of people who read the book and saw the movie is that they did a good job with the movie but I would totally understand how you couldnt go there again!

  46. Liana says:

they did a really good job with the film and cast it well. I really am liking Carey Mulligan.

  47. Henriette says:

I’ve never seen her in anything, but especially at a time when many people are losing their jobs and their homes it’s nice to see a celeb who thinks that a Best Western isn’t one of the Circles of Hell. Good for her!

  48. Francesca says:

She reminds me of what Katie Holmes used to be like: fresh, interesting, sexy, ALIVE, and a good actress with lots of potential. Love this girl

  49. roguesiren says:

This is a very smart girl. She has more chances to make it in that business with her down to earth attitude. Fame is flighty and ephimeral, and it change in a minute. This girl can teach Lindsay Lohan a few things.

  50. WhiteBoy41 says:

    She’s keepin it real.
Feet on the ground floor > for now.
    It will pay off later.
Cute as the button on my shorts.

  51. Anti-icon says:

I knew there was more to love about this person besides her acting (good) her style (cute and appropriate) and taste in dudes (she dumbed Shia?!) Now that I know she’s perfectly in a Best Western, I absolutely adore her.

  52. Brooklyn says:

Literally everything about this girl is endearing. I love her. And Shia is no match for this girl, she’s going places. Find yourself a dreamy catch Carey, you deserve it more than most!
    Loves it.

  53. cruiz2 says:

Love her coolness and looks. We need more actresses like her – she’s a new refreshing role model. I recently discovered the Rapid Transit in PHX(of all places) & I’m doing it. Took time to figure out but… Hey, I prefer not to drive the crazy streets!
