Helena Bonham Carter at ‘The King’s Speech’ premiere: tacky, tragic or cute?

Last night was the premiere of The King’s Speech in NYC – they’ve already shown the movie in LA, for the AFI Film Festival. I didn’t cover the LA tour because… well, I kind of forgot. There were nice photos of Colin Firth, but Helena Bonham Carter wasn’t wearing anything ridiculous, per usual. Thankfully, HBC was back in wacky form last night. I was trying to see if I could get some kind of confirmation on whether HBC’s dress is Vivienne Westwood, but I can’t find out. My guess is that it’s Westwood – HBC usually wears Westwood, and the cut looks like it. I would almost say the dress is a total success if not for HBC’s little touches that f-ck it up, in classic HBC style. The red bow in her hair, like she’s 5 years old, and the red-lip purse all detract from the pretty dress. Plus, the bored, “over it” attitude doesn’t help either. But she’s Helena, so what are going to do?

And of course, Colin is always classic – he must get his suits especially tailored for those shoulders. SWOON. Oh, and his wife is incredibly lovely. Love them together. I want him to get an Oscar so badly, I can taste it.

Helena = tacky and weird. Colin = hot.

  2. susanne says:

    Colin’s wife- even hotter!

  3. Henriette says:

Oh, in 2001, a friend worked at a party for the opening of the Steve Martin. Helena Bonham-Carter film called Novocaine. Apparently, she was coked out of her mind – acting insane, dress falling off her, Steve Martin avoided her all night. Maybe that was a one-time thing (doubt it) and maybe she’s cleaned up her act since then (quite possibly) but now I always giggle when I see her looking wacky because I wonder if its her or the drugs…

  4. bubbles says:

she never fails to amuse me.

  5. sapphire says:

I just can’t help it-I think HBC rocks, even though she needs her teeth cleaned and some other grooming essentials. Eccentric without the excess”try”.

  6. Missfit says:

Pretty dress, but I don’t like the hair, it would have looked better down…she is actually a very pretty lady, stinkin cute too. 😉 lol

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

HBC quirky fabulous as usual. I only classify people as tragic when they TRY and be fabulous and fashion forward but fail.

  8. Henriette says:

Colin Farrell’s wife looks exactly like Steve Carrell with a wig and makeup!

  9. DeE says:

I hope she isn’t on bad drugs. I always see her as eccentric. I actually like the spice of those going against the “grain” as long as the envelope isn’t pushed in an immodest way. I would rather see the way she “puts” it all together over some of these chicks running out here without pants and wearing blouses as dresses and bras as shirts

  10. Samigirl says:

HBC is a mom now. I’m sure she has cleaned up her act by now. She is wacky, but I love her!

  11. Jaded says:

She srsly needs to whiten her choppers.

  12. devilgirl says:

I like Helena and Colin both. Can’t wait to see the movie.

  13. Penguen says:

I love her. I think she’s eccentrically fabulous.

  14. Manda3 says:

    I love her. I can’t help it.

  15. W.O.M. says:

For HBC — this is cute. She doesn’t have on 18 layers and there are no small animals hiding in her hair. WINNER!

The purse wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t holding it in such an artificial pose.

“Colin Firth, I have loved you since the moment you dove into the pond in Pride and Prejudice whilst wearing that white cotton man-blouse and those lovely tight britches. You are MINE.”

  16. Amy says:

I have her purse! In fact I have a few Lulu’s and they are ab fab! I love HBC even more now!

  17. mslewis says:

I’ve always loved Helena Bonham Carter and the fact that she doesn’t give a sh!t what people say about the way she dresses. I think she always looks great and different, which is something none of these stars want to be. They have their “stylists” who dress them to all look the same. I can always count on Helena to look like herself. She also has the cutest kids and she dresses them kind of whacky also. They all look great. (Except for Tim Burton who always looks like a mad scientist!!!)

I also adore Colin Firth and I’m looking forward to seeing this movie. I know I’ll probably have to wait to get it from Netflix because “arty” films don’t make it to my city too often and, if they do, they hang around about two days!! But this movie sounds like something I would love. Can’t wait to see it.

  18. Miss A says:

Remove the bow and put on some different shoes and she’s good to go! I love her. Wacky is brilliance.

  19. Stronzilla says:

I would be pressing that purse against Colin’s wonderful backside.

  20. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

She’s great. I wanna be her when I grow up.

  21. Marianne says:

The thing about Helena is that she always looks weird. She’s never looked glamorous. This is just her style.

  22. Novaraen says:

    Love her…and she looks great!

    Colin too! <3

  23. anti says:

she’s a little bit nina hagen.
    i think she is wonderful!

  24. bellaluna says:

You know, I’ve just come to accept that HBC is delightfully wacky and unconcerned with what other people think, so I actually look forward to seeing what roles she accepts and what she wears.

  25. lavender says:

Ummm…It’t Helena Bonham Carter. She is never tacky, tragic or cute. SHE IS AWESOME.

  26. Holla says:

She looks fab!!! Don’t love the bow, but it is quirky and like her hair overall.

  27. Carrie says:

Livia Firth, Colin’s wife, does a blog for Vogue UK in which she wears only “green designers” on the red carpet during Colin’s award season run. It’s interesting if you are into fashion, green fashion (those that don’t use sweatshops, dump dies and chemicals into water supplies, etc.), or want a little behind the scenes info.

HBC is like Tilda Swinton- you can’t judge their fashion based on a normal standard, you have to judge them based on how they have looked in the past. So on a regular scale, HBC looks crazy. On the HBC scale, she looks shockingly together.

  28. lala in nYc says:

HBC! You are an utter delight! Never change your quirky, unique self!

  29. Lenore says:

It’s really weird how Helena Bonham Carter is, these days, regarded as this wacky eccentric who dresses like a mad old bag lady. Maybe I’m old, but I grew up with the HBC Classic Flavour – the English rose, the Merchant-Ivory ingenue, you know… the boring one.

Nowadays, everyone’s all “Oh, that HBC. She crazeh”. When did this happen?!

Personally I think Fight Club was the turning point. They spiked her hair and put her in a vat of mascara and she crawled back out looking like Robert Smith and thought, “Thank Christ I’m out of all those period-drama corsets! I could get used to this.” Then Tim Burton rolled up, dressed her up as a monkey and voila. I never thought I’d live to see the day when Helena Bonham Bloody Carter was the wacky dame on the red carpet.

Not that I’m complaining; I love her. I genuinely think she looks fabulous, kindergartener’s hairbow and all. I’d rather have her any day than all those drab fake-tanned blonde toothy starlets who look the same, all having been styled and polished to within an inch of their lives by the same three tanorexic tossers in LA.

  30. Circe says:

HBC can wear whatever the fuck she wants.

  31. Anti-icon says:

Helena looks adorbs. So does Colin. But riddle me this….does his wife look “manish?” I mean, more so than others in Hollywood who are in our faces daily. LOL

  32. Lindy says:

“Ummm…It’t Helena Bonham Carter. She is never tacky, tragic or cute. SHE IS AWESOME.”

Couldn’t agree more. Love her weirdo vibe.

  33. December says:

    HBC = amazingly awesome.

She fucking owned as Marla Singer.

  34. lyn says:

HBC: love, love, love!!!! it’s just her quirky self! no “growing up” needed – it’s who she is! i love it!

  35. Liana says:

I love HBC. And Colin Firth is just so unassuming and lovely.

  36. Diva says:

    Agreed lavender!

I love everything about her here, except the purse, which I personally could do without but would never find fault with HBC about! {=0)

  37. photo jojo says:

    Totally adorable. I love it!

  38. Voodoobetty says:

ADORABLE and i so want that dress. It looks like a viv westwood. I would kill to have this womans wardrobe

  39. adtwah says:

Love the hair, love the bow…find her completely adorable.

  40. Lia says:

Why do these silly actresses think posing pigeon-toed is cute?? That’s so junior-high. Firth’s wife looks like Demi Moore, before Moore started messing with her face. She’s lovely.

  41. original kate says:

love HBC and she can wear whatever she wants, IMO.

  42. sauvage says:

Am I the only one who’s slightly irritated by Colin Firth’s wife’s bra showing?

  43. mollination says:

love the bow hate the purse.
