Victoria Beckham is going to design dresses to sell for $1,200 and up

Watch out, Victoria Beckham is going to inflict yet another overpriced clothing line on the public. Or what she would like to call ‘up scale’ dresses:

The singer turned designer revaled to industry bible WWD, during a recent interview about her new scent, Signature for Her, that she is currently working a new collection of sophisticated, high end dresses, that she intends to unveil in September during the international collections.

‘It will be something completely different from what I’ve ever done. I’m just putting it together at the moment, they will be very up scale dresses and likely to start at around $1,200 retail. I’m going to be using very expensive fabrics and finishes, lots of embroideries.’

Victoria already has a line of jeans that retails for upwards of $250 a pair, which she has been criticized for not promoting. They aren’t selling particularly well, probably because as Celebitchy pointed out, if you’re going to buy a pair of expensive jeans you would get a more recognizable brand.

I think the same would go for Victoria’s new fashion line. If I was going to lay down $1,200 on a dress I’d probably buy something from a real designer. Posh has said in the past that there is a ’stigma’ attached to being her, telling GMTV Britain that while she was a pop star and a footballer’s wife, she loves high fashion. I think this stigma is going to be attached to her clothes also.

While loving fashion may be a prerequisite to being a designer, I would have to say that it doesn’t actually make you qualified to design clothing.

Posh is shown at the CFDA Fashion Awards on 6/2/08. That’s not one of her designs. Thanks to WENN for these photos.

  1. I admire her style not for how great it looks but how she pulls it off.

But buying a few thousands of dollars dress by Victoria Beckham? No, thanks. I don’t think so.

I believe Christian Siriano would find this idea “not so fierce”.
A true designer (can sew, to start with) is not the same as someone who just loves haute couture and special shapes.

  2. I agree, Bellatrix. She is a good clothes hanger, but I def would not shell out that much money to buy something from her. There are so many other designers out there and I would rather buy one of them.

  4. Yes, she doesn’t have enough $$ and fame now she needs to sell clothes with her own name on it. Too bad only 12 year olds will be able to fit into them!

I highly doubt she’ll be the actual designer, rather that those under her with actual design experience will do it.

  7. People who can afford to drop $1200 on a frock aren’t going to buy her crap. But If she offered it for $14.98 at Wal-Mart Jamie Lynn Spears or somebody might buy it…I say MIGHT buy it.

  8. She can design and sell them for $1200.00 and up, however that doesn’t mean anyone will be buying them. If by some great stretch of the imagination they sell, it will be on the 75% off discount rack at an outlet store.

  10. I find it funny that the 1st design hasn’t even been thought of, the 1st stitch has yet to be made, yet, ho already knows that entry level is going to be 1200 bones.
Well at least upscale dust will have a place to land and take up residence, not unlike her upscale jeans that upscale gypsy moths are turning into upscale lunch as that upscale denim rots on the rack.
Hey Devilgirl, if they are on the 75% off rack will they be cheap enough for j-lo?

  14. …1,200 dollars?
Seriously, ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS on ONE DRESS?
I’m sorry for the all-caps there, but…wow. And I’m not even some “these kids these days”-type of woman who looks down on such extravagant purchases– I just turned 23. I’m the prime market (I’m even a select market, ‘rockabilly’) for expensive duds…and I STILL would not pay that much! I feel awful shelling out over 45 bucks for a dress.
And honestly? If you saw my age there, you know I came of age during the reign of the Spice Girls. I LOVED THEM. Saw the movie, plastered my room with their posters, owned the albums, had the dolls, seeing the Spice Bus when I was 11 was the highlight of my preteen existence. But Posh…um, no. She was always my least favorite (Ginger was always number 1, we ‘gingers’ gotta stick together) I will not be patronizing her stuff, and if a little girl who dreamed of being the American Spice Girl says no way…that’s bad. I thought her ‘posh style’ was crap when I was 11, what the heck should I think 12 years later?!

  16. I hate to say it, because I think Posh is hot, but in those pics she looks like she’s being ravaged by butterflies.
