Sarah Jessica Parker isn’t trying to avoid being typecast

Most actors seem to get really stressed when they become famous for perfectly portraying a certain role. They get all paranoid that they’re going to be pigeonholed and typecast forever more. So someone like Jennifer Aniston might do a really macabre horror movie after becoming super famous as Rachel in Friends, or Courtney Cox might do some softcore porn. You know, whatever it takes to remind us that they’re multifaceted and multitalented. Because who wants to be stuck playing the same old character or in the same type of show over and over again?

Well, Sarah Jessica Parker, for one. The actress is in talks to star in The Ivy Chronicles, a show about a single gal making her way in New York. All that’s missing are the shoes.

Taking Carrie Bradshaw to the big screen proved a shrewd move for Sarah Jessica Parker – the Sex and the City movie’s so far raked in more than $300 million – and now she’s eyeing the role of another single urban professional.

The star, 43, is in discussions with Warner Bros. about a screen version of novelist Karen Quinn’s The Ivy Chronicles, described by the Hollywood Reporter as an up-to-date take about class and the single woman in Manhattan – though unlike Bradshaw, title character Ivy Ames moves out of the Upper East Side after the double whammy of a job loss and a divorce.

She has to withdraw her children from their expensive private school, though they also provide her with a eureka moment: Ames starts a service to help women land their kids in upper-crust kindergartens.

So… Carrie Bradshaw in ten years? Obviously it’s not the exact same as Sex & the City, but it’s similar enough that you’d think Parker would be a little worried about getting stuck playing a New York single gal over and over again. Throw in a few pun-loving girlfriends and you’ve got yourself a guaranteed hit. Frankly it’s probably not a bad decision – Parker’s last few movies haven’t exactly seen critical and/or box office success. She might be wise to play this role until she’s a granny.

Is it bad that I like that sweater?

  2. EP says:

No, that’s a fabulous outfit. Don’t know about the shoes though.

  3. m says:

Those shoes look like pointe shoes (ballet).

They’re like Amy Winehouse shoes with heels.

    😆

    She looks fantastic.

As i watched the “Sex and the City” movie, I kept wondering if Big worked for Bear Stearns and whether he was (relatively) broke after that company crash landed. And if Carrie would want him any more when he was no longer “big.”

Maybe the role described above is a first step towards SJP playing recession-era New Yorkers who have to deal with temporary loss of fabulousness.

SJP never really had a splendid career before SATC. She did star in a few movies but not many people knew who Sarah Jessica Parker was if you would give her name.

If the New York Gal is her thing, then why not?
The city’s trendy in mass culture right now and many latest chick stories about single ladies are set in this city.

    SATC was intelligent and witty.
The Ivy Chronicles are very different although set in the same city.
I don’t feel this is a wrong decision and it’s not very typecasted after all (a bit though, I’ll admit).

Is that Mr. Ed’s long lost sister?

  9. Kaiser/ Hippacrat says:

CandyKay- Candace Bushnell based “Mr. Big” on her real-life romance with Bob Guccione, founder/publisher of Penthouse. I think for the tv series, the producers made a half-hearted attempt to take Big out of publishing, and make him some sort of big financing guy, so maybe Bear Stearns is a good guess. My guess? Hedge funds.

And SJP doesn’t seem to be worried about type-casting, probably because most actresses over 40 are just happy to get work. *Where art thou Julianne Moore?*

My favorite film of hers was ‘In the Best Interest of the Children’. Was on TV back when I was in highschool. I don’t think she should shy away from deeper roles … at this point, she’s so rich who cares if her stuff is box office.

  11. daisy42465 says:

Mr. Big was modeled after publisher Ron Galotti, not Bob Guccione.

  12. Jaclyn says:

She’s so pretty! Love her, no matter what role she plays.

  13. Kaiser/ Hippacrat says:

Whoops, you’re right daisy, I just checked. Bushnell dated Galotti, based her columns on him, then she dated Guccione. My bad.

    I miss Meg Ryan.

So long as she can wear saddle and doesn’t spit out the bit and try to bite the rider, she’ll always have work.

    *Sounds kinky, doesn’t it ?* 😳

Sarah Jessica has a stable family life, and her son is in school now, so she probably prefers to work in New York rather than travel the globe.

It’s a great role for her, why not work it? Hugh Grant spent an entire career as the suave rich guy, he was great at it. Someone else mentioned Meg Ryan, queen of the romantic comedy. Unfortunately Meg over-did the plastic surgery and lost her looks. She was so cute, but now she looks like a fish, I think that’s why she hasn’t worked in years.

  17. SallySitwell says:

She’s getting older and good unique roles for women are harder to come by — even ones with the name and celebrity pull. Anyway, I like her and I very nearly like the outfit (which doesn’t happen often with her clothing).
