Angelina Jolie & Johnny Depp cover Entertainment Weekly

ew

Today is like Christmas for Brangeloonies. First, we get Angelina Jolie’s Vogue cover and a funny, interesting interview where she gushes about handsome Brad and the kids. And now we get Jolie all sexed up with Johnny Depp. Shockingly, Depp is the one who looks like he needs a nap, and Angelina looks strangely rested. I really think she must have that effect on men – Brad looks sleepy a lot too. Anyway, I guess Angelina and Johnny are previewing The Tourist, which comes out in mere weeks… let’s see… it’s being released in America on December 10. Less than a month, people!

Angelina Jolie. Johnny Depp. They’re two of the biggest stars on the planet and, believe it or not, they’d never met before making The Tourist. Now, in this week’s Holiday Movie Preview issue, the two A-listers talk exclusively to EW about their new Venice-set romantic thriller (a throwback to glamorous Euro capers like To Catch a Thief and Charade), the struggles they faced getting the pricey movie to the screen, and, of course, a blow-by-blow account of when they finally got together for the first time.

How was it possible that these two stars, who have made 70 films between them and live within an hour of one another in the south of France, had never met?

“We’re both not that social,” Jolie tells EW. “I don’t think either one of us goes out of our house, especially in France. We’re both locked away.”

Depp admits that he’d always wanted to work with Jolie and was a fan, but wasn’t prepared for the woman he actually encountered.

“So much has been written about Angie and Brad [Pitt]. They’re sort of the Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton of our era. I knew she was a big star, but I didn’t know what to expect…”

For the full story of how Angelina met Johnny and their upcoming film The Tourist, check out this week’s Holiday Movie Preview issue of Entertainment Weekly, on stands Nov. 12.

[From Entertainment Weekly]

Johnny didn’t know what to expect and…? What did he find? Did he find out that she likes to drink wine while attempting to manipulate him into bed? Did he find out that she guzzles Gummi Bears??!? I need to know!

Oh, okay, I found more excerpts:

Jolie on why she chose the film: “I wanted to do something that would be a great vacation for my kids. I got a phone call saying, ‘Okay, the film’s shooting in Venice,’ and I said, ‘I don’t know what it is, but I’m going to say yes.'”

Jolie on exploring Depp’s office: “As I was waiting, I noticed these beautiful pictures of his [girlfriend, actress Vanessa Paradis] and kids and all of his paintings. He’s an artist, and you feel that in any space he’s in. When he walked in, he was as interesting as I’d hoped he’d be.”

Depp on being nervous to meet Jolie: “Well, there is sort of that. Because on one level it’s like, ‘Here we go, kid. We’re about to get into the ring together.’ We sat there and babbled about our kids, and it was a huuuuuge relief. I was pleasantly surprised that she has an incredibly perverse sense of humor. She’s a really cool broad.”

[From Buzz Sugar]

Oh, so she’s a “cool broad” with an “incredibly perverse sense of humor”. Sounds like she tried to stab him with one of her knives when they first met and/or touched his dong. Also: why is Angelina hanging out in Johnny’s office? Alone? I’m intrigued.

Can’t get past the major photoshopping.

  2. carrie says:

Does she want to hypnotize the photograph?
    nice make-up for him(irony)

  3. Isabel says:

There is so nothing there that it’s painful to even make the effort to consider any sort of scandal between these two!

    Meh.

  4. HotPockets says:

That is not Angelina and Johnny!

Just their wax figures posing for the picture!

  5. David says:

He looks like a gay porn star

  6. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Yes this is my Christmas. Oh Kaiser…that last paragraph…you love the salacious side of things don’t you? Can’t say I blame you. It doesn’t say she was alone in his office, though.

First when I saw this, I thought Johnny Depp looked like Teddy Roosevelt, expect without the Presidential garb. I hate how he is styled for this movie. I saw a really good trailer on TV and the movie looks really good.

I really like the cover, I think Angie looks amazing as usual. I am very excited and I can hardly contain myself, it needs to be Dec 10th now.

Oh P.S. Super happy you posted this. I am dying to see what JDG has to say. LOL

  7. Kim says:

David -As opposed to a Straight Porn Star? (smile)

  8. skibunny says:

I really could care less about movie stars but Johnny Depp causes my heart to skip a beat. Damn he’s hot!!!!

  9. Praise St. Angie! says:

looks like they “de-bloated” him for the cover.

I, too, can’t believe they never met before doing this film…I always have this image that EVERYONE in hollywood knows each other.

  10. Diane says:

@Love Angelina: I was thinking the same thing about JDG. Should be a comment any minute now.

  11. Jnet says:

What the heck is that cover photo about?? She looks in a trance..

  12. Raven Sparrow says:

    This man is gorgeous! *swoon*

On the cover pic, I bet he has his arms stuck straight out behind him “I’m not touching her, see Vanessa, no hands” 🙂

I don’t think Vanessa has to worry, he’s all hers and she knows it, lucky b*tch !

  13. KJ says:

ITA w/ @Isabel. Both of them strike me as two people who are completely smitten with their significant others than the thought of straying isn’t even apparent to them. And not to make a slight against marriage, but I find it interesting that both of them are in long-term committed relationships with kids but seem to refuse (not in a bad way) to get married. Maybe they’ve realized something we all haven’t? The idea of marriage in our modern society should be reworked or redefined perhaps?

But it’s more likely that I’m projecting my own doubts in traditionally view marriage onto a gossip column. Right. Leaving then…

    EDITED: for grammar fail

  14. OtherChris says:

She’s beautiful, but she looks like she’s in her 40s. It’s not lines, she just has the face of a woman who is older than she actually is.

  15. Mia135 says:

They look like two Madame Tussaud’s wax figurines.

  16. LindaR says:

@Raven Sparrow ha ha, thought the very same thing.

@Love Angelina, all this Angelina coverage must be making your day! I’d rather read your posts any day over some of the bullies that post on this website.

  17. jessica says:

    Her nose looks so plastic

  18. Kiska says:

They must of had separate photo shoots because that photo is odd looking It appears as if she is going to elbow him in the stomach. He looks incredibly cool and she appears haughty.

  19. Eve says:

    LOVE them both!

They shouldn’t have photoshopped Johnny Depp though…I don’t get why people are so worked up because he’s not looking his best in this movie. It’s what actors are supposed to do, you know…changing their appearance in order to play different roles — not playing the same character over and over again, while sporting the exact same look every single time.

  20. lucy2 says:

Well, at least they had her wear gloves, so now we don’t have to see dozens of posts about her arm veins. The styling for this movie was interesting, but definitely aged her, and it wasn’t all that flattering to him either.

Very glad the tabloids gave up on trying to convince us of some scandalous affair. I was expecting that nonsense to go on for years.

  21. Sakyiwaa says:

exaactly. they can change it up sometimes, they’re ACTORS for crying out loud! Angie has a sophisticated face. for me, it never looks the same. it changes every time, sometimes olderlooking sometimes young, sometimes, otherworldly, sometimes, natural, sometimes, goddess, sometimes, kinda freaky. still HEART her nevertheless! for real it’s Christmas! but being a fan of AJ is great everyday cos of what i love about her …which is practically everything! i will see the movie cos i love Johnny too. i wish i had the EW mag NOW! grr!

  22. euroschmuck says:

I do love angelina but she used to look better. I think she doesnt age pretty.
I am her age and look younger.

  23. anti says:

he looks way thinner on that cover than in the movie…

  24. truthSF says:

The cover is clearly photo shopped, because in the original, I was standing between them (in my head). Somebody was clearly jealous of all the sexiness in one shot, so the deleted me out of the picture. 🙂

  25. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

ohhhh Kaiser, you have pierced my heart with this one.
I hope that what he meant was that once he was around her that he instantly became violently ill and has been looking for me to nurse him back to health, cause he knows I got what it takes.

That is what REALLY happened. And kinda sounded like she wanted a piece of Vanessa to me..

  26. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

By the way, I love him.

Just thought I would tell you all if you didnt already know.

  27. latam says:

sounds like they got along well

  28. Beth says:

yep, they were photographed seperately and photoshoped together. I’m not getting much love from Johnny for Jolie, but maybe the rest of the interview is more glowing. If he can’t give more than a vague compliment for a co-star, any co-star, then they probably weren’t buddies on set. It’s just good manners!

She really does have incredible eyes, but it’s not a great cover.

  29. bros says:

he looks like a bloated gary oldman from bram stokers dracula.

  30. December says:

How do you get Gary Oldman from that? Though Gary is sexy (in my opinion), that looks nothing like him.

And that cover definitely looks like they both were photographed at different times seperately, then photoshopped in together.

I feel absolutely no chemistry from them together. Not from the trailers, and not from the interviews. Sorry, but when there’s no chemistry from the costars, the movie usually sucks.

  31. GrnMtGirl says:

    Gawd…I want him!!!

  32. Confuzzle says:

Did she kill him? Is he mummified in that shot?

Another dreary movie I won’t ever see.

  33. Anti-icon says:

Why is the publicity machine still in HYPERDRIVE about this actress? Didn’t we throw her overboard in favor of classier broads?

  34. Trish says:

    Love her gloves!

  35. Cheyenne says:

@Anti-icon: Um… who is “we”? The Boo-Hoo Sisterhood?

  36. nnn says:

LOL i like the “we throw her overboard in favor of classier broads”

….considering that the only actress lately they pushed (and failed) as a potential replacement of Jolie in THAT specific place she owns as the frontwoman in Hollywood is precisely….CLASSIER….Megan Fox

I am sorry but that post makes me laugh at all those classier alternatives they supposedly put out there.

Right now it’s mainly the reign of the lesser quality types with models turn actresses overnight facing experienced ones in movies or reality stars who are put as alternatives….

  37. flourpot says:

I like him bloated. I like him not bloated. I like him here, I like him there. Yes, I like him everywhere.

And there’s your Dr. Seuss for the day.

    /endregression

  38. Emily says:

I wish she’d gain a bit of weight. She was so frickin’ when she was younger and not a stick.

  39. mln says:

I agree with flourpot I do wish the cover wasn’t shopped to make put them in the same shot it makes both of them look odd but I love Johnny and I love Angie and I can’t wait to see this.

  40. mAEVE says:

Angelina and Depp are both quite shy from all reports.

  41. truthzbetta says:

They ‘shopped Johnny’s wine and beer gut off and he looks good.

Angie has crazy eyes. And her protruding bones look sharp. When did the Earth Mother become so bird scrawny?

  42. Dannnii says:

lol, they both look really baked!

  43. Stronzilla says:

Well, Depp was quite circumspect in his comments, didn’t really give anything away except to make a not so attractive comparison between the Jolie-Pitts and the Burton-Taylors, while Jolie seems almost trying too hard to draw parallels between them and insinuate they’re kindred spirits on some level.

BTW, her reason given in this article for choosing to make this particular film are a bit lightweight and quite far from the rather lengthy and well-thought out explanation she gave in the Vogue excerpt posted yesterday.

  44. Mrs K says:

I don’t understand the hype. I disliked all her movies I’ve ever seen – Mr. and Mrs. Smith (weak and not funny at all), Taking Lives (completely unrealistic),Lara Croft (no comment), Original Sin (wtf?)…Maybe I have just a different taste… I certainly won’t be seeing this one but I will read the critics.

  45. Vera says:

So much Photoshop – on both of them!

It looks all very nice and all, but I can completely see the waxiness of it. Johnny definitely looks more like a person, though. Angelina may look quite stunning in this shot, but also very fake. However, from the trailers I have seen for the Tourist thus far, she does look very nice – and this is coming from someone who isn’t really a fan of hers. If only she had gotten this look before all the scandals of the past decade or so.

As for the rumors floating about, I feel they will only hurt her. His acting career is well established, while hers has a few stand-out roles (the only two I can think of are Gia and Changelng for leading roles), then a bunch of mindless action flicks. What with the omnipresent questioning of Brad and Angelina’s relationship and whether it is in tatters or not, it’s a wonder she gets any roles at times. Then again, she seems quite busy with her humanitarian work – even if at times it seems she just wants to adopt all of Asia – which is respectable.

@45: I recommend looking into Gia if you are at all interested in dramas rather than the over-done chick action flicks she tends to be type-casted for. It isn’t a happy film, but it is done very well. Her acting in it was good and seemed like a breakthrough film for her before Girl, Interrupted claimed that title – but then Lara Croft came along a few years later…

  46. Cheyenne says:

@Vera: She is not an established actress? What planet are you living on? She has three Oscar nominations, one actual win, and earns $15-20 million per film. As for the rumors that have been floating about for the past five years, nobody cares about them any more except for the tired remnants of Aniston’s fan club. And there aren’t enough of them left to matter any more.

  47. Mrs K says:

@46 thank you. This Gia looks interesting and real…
PS:I hate dumb unrealistic “hero” movies

  48. DD says:

@Beth: he has to tone down his comments about her because it will be brutally dissected and over-analyzed, possibly triggering an endless triangle drama in the tabloids that will have him relentlessly followed by paps for the next decade. He’s just being smart in my opinion.

  49. nnn says:

    # Vera

Au contraire. I beleive that it is Johnny whose great acting carreer is not well established for someone who is perceived as a great actor but who has still till this date no resume in par with his greatness.

I said that because when you look at his filmography there is Burton flicks (lightweight commercial) and then the Jack Parrow (the Pirates) that came at a period while he was even considering going back to TV because all the rest were bombs and no stand out artistic projects.

He did great movies who didn’t attract people to the theaters at the beginning of his career. He paired with the likes of Brando, Al Pacino and De Caprio but for the past 15 years it went downhill in quality of movies, quality of co stars, poor diversity of directors which is a revealing sign. He went from the likes of Theron to the likes of Evan Mendes and Salma Ayek.

For all the greatness he is talked about he doesn’t even have the quality of co stars or diversity of lengedary directors that Jolie has (since you brought her by comparison), Jolie who is 35 years old and who began her career a decade later, co stars and directors all raving about her job (Connery, De Niro, Blanchett, Gena Rowland, Faye Dunnaway, Denzel, Oliver Stone, Clint Eastwood, ..)

For all his greatness (and i beleive he is potentially great and one of the greates of his time but has underachived in the quality of movies where he could use the palet of his actiong habilities, great movies to put out there, great movies in par with his talent, great movies that still are put out there WITHOUT HIM).

where are the huge stars pairing with him in great movies ? Where are the classic and reference movies ? Why Di Caprio is able to have them once in a while, hell even Pitt once in a while and not him ? Where are the legion of directors he has worked with ? Even if no award is granted, where are the raving, the acclaimed criotics about one specific role who left the reviews, the professionals or even the public in awe of his performance ?

De Niro has Taxi Driver, Once Upon a Time in America,

Pitt has Fight Club, 12 Monkeys, Seven,

Jolie has Gia, Girl Interrupted, Changeling

Di Caprio has Inception, The Departed

Even Will Smith as the Persuit of Happyness and Ali

and Johnny has : the Burton flicks (like 10 movies within the last twenty years) and Jack Sparrow as a reference because the masses are not even interested in seeing his talent somewhere else !

So again his talent is there, no doubt about it, BUT his greatness still need some credible work to rely on and at 48 years old i am still waiting for him to do more classic or art movie to have a legacy more meaty than Jack Sparrow.

But my theory is that for the past decade Johnny has chosen the easy route because the quality of his projects have been replaced consistently with commercial flicks (BURTON & PIRATES)versus independant and meaty one in the 90’s, precisely where his co stars were consistantly high caliber compared to those of today.

That’s precisely why even after nearly 30 years of working experience, he doesn’t have a diversity of great directors he has work with (again he plays it safe it’s Burton and that’s it), doesn’t appear in the good critically acclaimed movies consistently with high caliber co stars you will expect him to play.

So if he is great, he better hurry up in building a body of work in par with his greatness with co stars of the lengedary type too, with greart directors because having a CV with the Sparrow flicks and the Burton flicks as the main reference is straight up underechievment in my book to have that label.

And, your legacy is precisely the work you leave behind you, the people you have worked with. If you don’t pair with the greatest of your time more that once in a while, if you don’t diversify you work playing with great directors all the greatness you have inside won’t be captured for people to remembered your greatness, which is often established posthumously based on your body of work mainly.

  50. Vera says:

@Cheyenne: I was merely comparing the two – Depp is much more memorable of an actor to me, though that may have been due to Edwards Scissorhands being a fairly staple movie in my childhood. As for the Oscars, I can only recall her having one win and one nomination. The win being Girl, Interrupted, where she was supporting (which is why it was mentioned after Gia and Changeling, I was trying to think of her lead roles that were not the action typecast as so many of her films seem to be). The Oscar nomination being for Changeling, which was a film that I thought to be one of her few stand-out performances that were not action. Not sure what the third nomination was for, as it does not appear to exist.

Never did I say she was not successful – there is a large market for action babes, after all. She has been in a hefty amount of films, a good portion of which were successful. She certainly has her archetype down for those roles, too. But personally, save for the few films I have mentioned in both this post and my previous one, I haven’t been impressed by the majority of her filmography.

As for the rumors bit, I’d find it hard to believe that anyone could believe all of them. But after what feels like a decade, one cannot help but speculate that there may be bits of truth floating in at least a few of the stories, even if they may be stretched in order to sell copies or gain recognition.

@48: No problem! I suggest perhaps reading a bit about the actual Gia Carangi, as most of what you read on the Wikipedia page for her will be in the film, and although much of her personal life isn’t completely known, the film focuses on her relationships and runs with them. And reading it doesn’t really spoil the film, at least it didn’t for me. Learning about Gia beforehand piqued my interest for the movie more, and knowing the outcome didn’t take away from it.

Also, as it was in the 90s, Jolie looks more healthy in this film than recent. It may just be aging since then, but she really did a good job portraying Gia as Gia’s look was a new direction for fashion at the time.

  51. Cheyenne says:

@nnn: Excellent post. I think Depp is an underappreciated actor who maybe hasn’t pushed himself hard enough. The talent is there, no question; but now he needs to stretch his range. (That said, I absolutely loved him in “Sleepy Hollow”; one of my all-time favorite films.)

@Vera: There may be bits and pieces of truth floating around in every rumor about anybody. The question is, so what? Rumors or not, she’s an actress the studios want because her movies make money — lots and lots of it. She can pick and choose her roles. She’s reached a point in her career where she can do just about anything she wants to. If the movie she is working on now succeeds, she may decide to focus less on acting and more on producing and directing. By any standard, she is a more successful actor than Depp, who, as I said above, needs to stretch his range more to get the recognition he deserves.

  52. Gigohead says:

Love the gloves, they help hide those old lady hands she has!!

  53. Katie says:

nnn if you expect enyone to read your thoughts, you really should make your posts more concise.

Cheyenne, you adore her, great. But there’s no need to embelish her career acheivements, lest someone mentions all her Razzie noms!

I consider Johnny more of an ‘actor’, like Dicaprio. Angelina is a ‘movie star’. But to each their own.

  54. Vera says:

@nnn: I agree with your comparisons to most, but I still find Depp to be more established than Jolie, in my opinion (emphasis on my opinion). And it isn’t any stubbornness or dislike for her clouding my judgement.

I have seen the majority of Jolie’s most acclaimed films (Gia, George Wallace, A Mighty Heart, Changeling, and Girl, Interrupted) along with a few of her action flicks. From the bunch, I have gathered that she really started her career on a high in the late 90s with Gia and George Wallace, had a few more roles (half of which were recognized) before Girl, Interrupted came about and she nabbed an Oscar. After that, it seemed pretty much like a bunch of action flicks where she had the typecast role as being the lead chick. Before Changeling, it wasn’t looking so great with Beowolf – even though she did well in A Mighty Heart, it wasn’t exactly a mainstream film, and I recall many saying that Changeling was her turnaround. But since then, she had another action/suspense movie (Salt), and the Tourist is also an action/mystery movie, and will be in the next Kung Fu Panda. I feel that she has three categories to her films: Action, Critically Acclaimed Drama, and the rest which can range in genre from Animated to Sci-Fi/Period Pieces. The first thing I think when I see that she will be in a film is that there is going to be an action film out. To me, there isn’t that much diversity in her roles.

Now, this isn’t to say that Depp has loads more diversity than her in roles, as he does have the very distinct Tim Burton and Pirates films as you have said, but the films that aren’t in those two categories have much more range for me. Chocolat, The Libertine, Blow, Finding Neverland, Donnie Brasco, as well as the small bit in the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus are all different roles and are not stuck in the same genres.

Though, I feel that I also must say that I saw Depp’s films easily years before Jolie’s. The first was Edward Scissorhands, then Chocolat, both before I was ten. Then the Pirates and Burton films came out pretty much all when I was in high school. I never really got into any of Jolie’s action films, not finding much appeal in Lara Croft as the audience seemed aimed at men who played video games to me, and not having known of her earlier works yet. So with that being said, I readily admit that I am biased in comparing the two.

@Cheyenne: I wouldn’t quite phrase it as “reached a point in her career” – she had her high point somewhat early on, but pretty much fubbed it up with the films between Girl, Interrupted and the Changeling, as well as since the Changeling – though the Tourist thus far does look decent, it isn’t exactly a new role. I am not denying she has had great films here and there, but the rest are nothing to write home about. They may make money, but there really isn’t any spectacular acting. She fits a role in the action/thriller genre, which is all fine and dandy for her, but not all that impressive.

@Katie: I agree with Jolie being more of a movie star – I think I see more of her on the red carpets then the silver screens.

  55. lil says:

What rumors are some of you talking about? I didn’t get it. I guess i’m slow, too early for me i guess.

    Oh My Gosh!

Johnny is givin’ it! It’s as if he’s looking only at me.

    Angie who?

  58. Stronzilla says:

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz….

  59. Kim says:

Cool read EW interview Depp was floored by her performance in Changeling, they have similar acting style including adlibs. Depp”I could throw her anything and I would expect a great toss back…We had a ball”Angie dierctors and costars have had complimentary things to sat about her. When asked in interviews who they would like to work with again several Denzel, Deniro, Eastwood have mentioned her. Can’t wait for Dec 10th

  60. anonymous says:

Johnny Depp is beginning to get lazy and pudgy he had better watch himself, seems he have gotten too laid back. Pirate series and Alice In wonderland, cartoon characters. JD had better shape up he is starting to look terrible.

  61. Raven says:

Great comment, Kim. I have read a lot of interviews of cast, crew and directors who have worked with her. They have all had good things to say and it was in situations where, had they not liked her, they could have avoided saying anything.

  62. Tammy says:

@nnn Johnny Depp has been nominated for 3 Oscars in the Leading Actor Category:

Sweeny Todd, Finding Neverland, and Pirates of the Caribbean:The Curse of the Black Pearl

  63. werty89 says:

Mrs K: check out Gia, beyond borders, girl interrupted and hackers. she also made a great role as legs sodowski in foxfire but the rest of the movie isnt that bad, but theres a scene at the end of the movie that always tears me up.

  64. Tammy says:

@nnn Johnny Depp has been nominated for THREE OSCARS for Leading Actor, not too shabby!

Sweeny Todd, Finding Neverland and Pirates of the Carribean:Curse of the Black Pearl

  65. Lorenzo says:

While I was reading all these nice comments of all these nice and well educated people who seem to know everything about actors and their careers, I was thinking of “Gilbert Grape”.
Mr. Di Caprio had to work really hard by the side of Mr. Depp and his godgiven presence and I liked it very much.
And I like this little smile of Mr. Depp on the cover, is anybody else out there who smiles like him?

  66. hopeso says:

She is like wine, the older the greater..

  67. Camille says:

Moreaces: Agreed. Not a good cover.

  68. Sakyiwaa says:

whatever the case maybe, they both wanted to work with each other. so there!

  69. Sakyiwaa says:

hate hate hate, Angelina in Salt was made to look like a man, she at one point didn’t have make up and you know what she was beautiful, and that is why all these people who comment negativity on Angelina just hate her because no matter what she does with or without makeup she looks great. SO HATE ALL YOU WANT, AND TALK ALL YOU WANT ABOUT HER, SHE IS STILL A STRONG AND BEAUTIFUL WOMEN.
