Natalie Portman in Rodarte for the ‘Black Swan’ premiere: budget or pretty?

wenn3094426

Last night, the cast of Black Swan gathered for the AFI Film Fest premiere of the film. Even though the film has been making its way through the festivals for months, last night was notable because it was the first time the entire cast showed up. Previously, one of the leads has always been missing, usually one of the ladies – Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman or even Winona Ryder. Considering this was such a big event, you’d expect every lady to really bring it, right? Well, some didn’t. Natalie Portman, especially, was phoning it in, style-wise. Don’t get me wrong – Natalie is beautiful, and she could make a paper bag look chic. But this Rodarte dress just seems too budget. And yes, I know it probably costs a fortune and it’s considered “high fashion”. But it looks cheap and K-Mart, especially with the WalMart shoes.

Meanwhile, I think Mila Kunis looked beautiful and situation-appropriate. I can’t see who designed this, but it’s really cute, and let me just say – in close-ups of Mila, she’s flawless. Even more so than Natalie.

I think Winona Ryder looked great too – she was slightly over-dressed compared to the other women (who were mostly in cocktail dress). But I think Winona wants some attention, and she hopes this will be her return to bigger awards-and-art house fare.

Jesus Christ, Vincent Cassel. Is it too early in the morning for me to say that I all I need is a couple of these photos and twenty ten minutes “by myself” and I’ll be in a post-masturbatory happy-haze for the rest of the day? This MAN.

Guess who was there? Heidi Klum. And guess what she was wearing? MONDO!!!

everyone looked good to me but portman.

  2. Samantha says:

I think the dress would have looked better if we weren’t on the brink of winter. The colors just seem out of place, especially when you see everyone else. Its a cute dress…just don’t think it goes with this season.

  3. Samigirl says:

I think Juliette looks AMAZING. That dress is FAB! I <3 that Heidi is wearing Mondo, but Juliette looks the best to me, hands down.

  4. Listerino says:

Woo go team Mondo! That’s awesome to see Heidi in his dress. I thought it was his before I read your comment confirming it. He has a style that is so unique. He really should have won.

Anyway moving on to Natalie – I thought she looks as stunning as always. I was watching reruns of Project Runway the other day and one of them was the episode she was a guest judge in. I’d forgotten just how short she is.

  5. Jackson says:

Eh, if it were the middle of summer that dress would be ok. Even then it’s not great, but at least I’d give it a pass. For Novemeber and a red carpet event, I’ll say no.

And Heidi in Mondo! I really did like that dress on PR. I know he took some heat for not showing more skin to break up the print, but I actually liked it better with the long sleeves. Still looks good though.

  6. devilgirl says:

Everyone, including Lewis looks better. What was Portman thinking?

  7. jennifer says:

It’s November, that dress was a bad decision. It looks like something you’d wear to Easter mass.

  8. LisaMarie says:

MONDO!! I LOVE that Heidi is wearing his dress, and I love it even more that its the dress that Kors and Nina hated so much. And Juliette is totally working that dress. She looks amazing in it.

  9. LOVE ANGELINA says:

This is a very good red carpet. I love what Mila is wearing whatever it is and I looked to, I am gonna find who the heck she is wearing. Maybe Instyle will tweet her look later.

I am sooo loving Heidi wore a Mondo design. I love love love it. 😀

I agree with you about Nat looking budget, not really budget but just not glam for a premiere that is clearly dripping with glam. Rodarte did all the costumes for the film but I am pretty sure they could have glammed Nat up a bit more.

  10. Praise St. Angie! says:

agree with most of you…the dress is pretty…for a spring garden party or easter brunch. but in november? fail.

I still can’t get past Portman being a supporter of the child-rapist Polanski.

Dita looks great, Lewis looks great, Ryder looks great (except for the skirt on that dress – UGH), Kunis looks great…

  11. Hautie says:

Love Dita. Love those shoes! I love that she never half-ass her style on the red carpet. She shows up looking like a movie star.

Juliette is just impossible to hate. She has really been stepping up her dresses in the last year. And she always looks so happy. Plus she has great shoes!

I am not sure what to think about the Portman dress. It is a lovely frock. But I agree it is a Spring/Summer dress. But it fits well and I do like it. But it just looks odd with it being November.

Mila looks great. Even if every female practically showed up in all black. Her dress fits great with out showing all her business. And I love her shoes too!

  12. Rachael says:

Mila Kunnis’s dress is STUNNING. I’d wear that in 2 seconds. Natalie’s dress is extremely out of season. Is it June? and she always wears those ugly vegan shoes. Get over it and get some Italian leather quality footwear.

  13. hstl1 says:

Natalie’s shoes ruin the whole look. As for Heidi, I think she should be on Mr. Blackwell’s worst-dressed list every year. She has zero style and always looks like a bag lady when she is out with her kids.

  14. Ellen Smith says:

Heidi Klum – take off the Swiss cheese.
Natalie Portman – summer is over, sweetie.
Winona – you’re trying too hard, girlfriend.
Mila – congrats – you got it right!

  15. Toe says:

Lewis looks Fierce in that dress.

  16. anti says:

ms. lewis looks AWESOME… thanks for including the pic!

portman looks really out of place, especially in the group photo. mila looks perfect…yet, ms. lewis looks totally wild!

  17. maggiegrace says:

Portman’s dress is off-season; Juliette looks great, she’s rockin’ it; Winona’s put on a bit of weight…looks stuffed in the dress.

  18. Arianna says:

    i love you juliette!!!
and mila oh man my girl crushes

  19. K-MAC says:

    Juliette Lewis looks incredible!

And what is with people like Winona Ryder and Julia Roberts letting themselves get that out of shape? I get that they are older but give me a break.

Dita is freaking unreal and I adore that she always brings it!

Heidi Klum is a f*cking rock star!

  20. eva says:

Winona’s shoes are so wrong for that dress. It looks all business on the bottom. she needs a light, strappy sandal w/ bare legs. Seriously, those shoes and hose would be better matched to a day suit.

It would also help if her skirt was 4 – 6, inches shorter (tea length) its making her look so bottom heavy…and she’s not!

  21. Oi says:

I must be the only one who thinks Portman is intolerably pretentious. She irritates the crap out of me for some reason. And then she dresses like this. uhg.

  22. sauvage says:

I really like Nathalie Portman’s dress and I think Heidi’s dress is a nightmare.

  23. Bunny says:

Juliette has been hitting it out of the park with the dresses lately, and her shoes are always fantastic.

  24. Vera says:

The dress seems more suited for a comedy premiere – like maybe for No Strings Attached? Though, in the group shot, the eye is drawn to her as the other ladies were in black and blended in with the suits. Though with her already small frame, the floral makes it all very whimsical. Hair and makeup are fine, though, and quite lovely. But the dress isn’t really Gala or Red Carpet – unless you are under fourteen.

    Mila looks great.

Winona looked alright, but the shoes don’t do it for me.

Dita always seems very well put together.

    Juliette looked great.

Hiedi…not the most flattering. It’s nice that it is Mondo’s, but really isn’t the best. It isn’t very tasteful.

  25. Carrie says:

Portman’s shoes always suck- I understand that she’s vegan and won’t wear leather, but her shoes continue to ruin her outfits for me.

  26. normades says:

Agree with y’all, that dress is not season appropriate. Natalie’s the star, she should have nailed it
Juliette’s body is amazing. Bravo girl

  27. Anti-icon says:

I have to say that this cast brought the GLAM with the stylin. They all look great. Mila is an elegant beauty and so talented. Portman looks appropriate, and youthful, which she is. And Winona. Please let her back into Indy films. She is so talented and she made many really good films. Who jacked her career?

  28. original kate says:

natalie’s dress reminds me of the dresses my mother used to force my sisters & i to wear for church on easter sunday.

mila looks stunning. what a pretty, pretty girl.

dita always looks perfect. love her style.

juliette always brings the crazy, doesn’t she?

winona…i don’t know what happened to her. she makes me a little sad now whenever i see her.

mondo’s dress does not work on heidi. not sure why, though. sweet that she wore his design.

  29. spinner says:

When I first saw Winona, I thought it was Tina Fey for a sec. OMG!!

  30. SammyHammy says:

Natalie looks good; I like the dress a lot, personally.

Mila can do no wrong, style wise. She looks gorgeous, as usual.

    Winona looks absolutely horrible.

  31. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

Vincent Cassel is bringing it better than any of the ladies in my opinion.

But I’m super biased so what do I know?

  32. Anti-icon says:

OMG–That’s a MONDO!!!!!!!! I just made the leap. I didn’t watch PR this season. Just a couple of episodes. And Mondo is King!!!!

This dress is da bomb! it is stunningly retro glam. Love.

  33. danielle says:

Love Mila! Have never loved Portman. Wynona looks old. :^( Whoa! Just checked wiki – she’ll be 40 next year. Ok, not bad for 40.

  34. Raven says:

Not a great photo of Dita. She usually looks picture perfect.

And I hope whoever commented on Paltrow’s figure earlier takes a good look at Winona Ryder. She looks dreadful in that dress. With the cellulite on her chunky arms she really should not have worn a strapless gown.

I agree about the seasonality for Portman’s dress. Kunis looks flawless and Klum looks great, too.

  35. Kim says:

They all look terrible. A bunch of beautiful women dressed terribly-to bad. I cant wait to see this movie!

  36. Keyanna says:

Natalie Portman is super boring. She is so homely.

  37. bleh says:

    Natalie… those shoes…

  38. Alexis says:

I like Rodarte, but I think she could go for something a little less cutesy.

  39. REALIST says:

Natalie Portman is so beautiful-in a fresh, uncluttered way-that she looks good in about anything. She never looks forced, like, say, Juliette Lewis. What is it with the hooker look? Seems to be going around Hollywood these days.

  40. Stephy2585 says:

    Agreed.
    It’s not “of the season”.

However, I love it and ONLY because of the shoes, oddly enough.
Hmmph. I don’t know. It’s just so lovely.

  41. Newbie says:

I love Natalie, and I’m glad she’s getting some attention for her work on this film. But the dress is “meh” when she should be stealing the show on every level. I’m sorry…I really want Juliette Lewis’s legs. WOW.

  42. serena says:

Natalie’s dress is very pretty, but probably not for a situation like that.
I liked Mila Kunis dress too and Wynona Ryder was not at her best, especially her hair were a mess.

  43. mystified says:

I agree with sauvage. I have yet to see any evidence that Heidi Klum has any style. Why is she on Project Runway anyway?

Natalie’s dress is gorgeous and looks great on her although it does seem a little out of season. I’m not even a fan of Natalie’s. She’s beautiful but her acting is beyond awful: stiff, wooden and completely unwatchable.

  44. Lisa says:

    Juliette Lewis… DROOL!!

  45. Leek says:

Kunis makes Portman look like Courtney Love.

  46. latam says:

winona is prettier than both those girls

  47. nandoo says:

I think Juliette looks AMAZING I think the dress would have looked better if we weren’t on the brink of winter.
