Jessica Alba blames her directors for her history of bad performances

alba2

A couple of weeks ago, we had some of the first excerpts from Jessica Alba’s December cover interview with Elle Magazine. The interview was especially notable because Alba said some particularly dumb things, even for her. The one quote that made me laugh (and cry) was “Good actors never use the script unless it’s amazing writing. All the good actors I’ve worked with, they all say whatever they want to say.” Right. Ugh. Anyway, long story short, I never remembered to check to see if there were any more interesting quotes from the piece, and then I got my new Elle yesterday. The whole Alba piece is a mere two pages, nearly half of which is made up of random quotes from Alba’s costars talking about how great she is (eye roll). But! There are a few more “bitch, please” parts I wanted to pull, including Alba’s decision to throw her “first-time directors” under the bus for her series of bombs.

Jessica throws her directors under the bus: Jessica Alba’s previous forays into funny have never been quite as promising. There was 2007’s utterly flat Good Luck Chuck, in which Alba played a penguin researcher opposite Dane Cook (ha?), and 2008’s The Love Guru, a Mike Myers send-up about spirituality and hockey—two chronically foreign concepts that don’t really play to the passions of America’s moviegoing masses. Of course, Alba’s too savvy to trash any big names, and perhaps too kind to go overboard in assigning blame. She takes accountability where she needs to. “I know I haven’t been swimming in the deep end with some of the movies I’ve done,” she says. “I wasn’t trying to. I knew what they were.” Alba does, however, offer one clinical reason as to why these movies bombed. She whispers it: “First-time directors.”

Her low point was when her director told her she was ugly when she cried: “I wanted to stop acting,” Alba says. “I hated it. I really hated it.” Actually, it was the lack of acting she hated. “I remember when I was dying in Silver Surfer,” she says, referring to the 2007 Fantastic Four sequel in which she plays a woman who alternates between being invisible and wearing a spandex catsuit. “The director was like, ‘It looks too real. It looks too painful. Can you be prettier when you cry? Cry pretty, Jessica.’ He was like, ‘Don’t do that thing with your face. Just make it flat. We can CGI the tears in.’ And I’m like, But there’s no connection to a human being. And then it all got me thinking: Am I not good enough? Are my instincts and my emotions not good enough? Do people hate them so much that they don’t want me to be a person? Am I not allowed to be a person in my work? And so I just said, ‘F-ck it. I don’t care about this business anymore.’”

After she became a mother, she started choosing directors who she couldn‘t throw under the bus: “The time I’m not spending with my kid has to be worth it,” she says, moving her brown Wayfarers toward her boxy Burberry bag, “so when I sat down with my agents after I was ready to go back to work, I told them: It’s all about the directors.” Alba wasn’t dead set on being a leading lady anymore either. She’d pursue roles based on quality of experience rather than quantity of screen time. “Now I prefer I’m not the lead,” she says nonchalantly, pleased with the maturity of the revelation. “It’s a totally different approach—way better.”

On how she probably would have refused to work with Robert Rodriguez and Robert DeNiro earlier in her career because she didn’t want to be typecast as Hispanic: [The role in Machete] is exactly the kind of part Alba would have chafed at earlier in her career, worrying about being typecast forever. “I feel like I have nothing to lose now,” she says. “If the part looks fun and I get to work with great people—De Niro was in this one too; I’ve done two movies with Robert De Niro this year!—I’m going to take it. Machete was hilarious. I made no money doing it; it was just a project to do with my friend [Rodriguez], who, by the way, allowed me to have a lot of input on my character.”

[From Elle]

My God, this chick is so stuck up her ass. And she’s dumb too – really, powerfully stupid. So… not only is she disrespecting screenwriters in this interview (and she really did offend people), but she’s also throwing many of her directors under the bus for her history of lousy performances. At some point, directors and writers and yes, even her costars, are going to collectively turn to Jessica and say “You know what, moron? It’s you. It’s not us. The world is not conspiring against you to make you look like a griping, unprofessional idiot who can’t act her way out of a paper bag. You’re doing that all on your own.”

She’s is beautiful, but the beauty dulls because she is so BOOOORRRRRING. And these last few interviews prove it, especially the one about her body after a baby and everybody is prettier than her, wah, wah, wah, and now this. How boring to be with her and exhausting, needy for validation.

LOL, and the real reason she prefers not to be the lead is because no leading lady roles are offered to her beyond crap. Who is she fooling?

  2. brin says:

Keep talking, Jessica & pretty soon we won’t have to hear this crap at all because you won’t be working.

  3. Shay says:

Looks like she’ll be getting many roles in the future! Not.
But she does make a valid point. Many alpha male Hollywood directors are douches. One read of Joe Esterhas’ autobiography reveals a lot about how idiotic and overrated some known directors are.

  4. BIte me says:

Ok then, bitch is talking like she’s Cate the Great or something . Girl u lucky u even a socalled working wackress

  5. Kaboom says:

Considering a great actor never reads the lines, they could hardly be constricted by a director, either.

  6. David says:

    She is so boring

  7. Praise St. Angie! says:

well, let’s hope that this is another (perhaps the final) nail in the coffin of her career.

I agree that the girl is beautiful, but she SUCKS at acting.

  8. mslewis says:

Jessica basically has zero self-awareness and is also stupid. Not a good combo.

She is not a star; she is not a good actress; she cannot open a movie; she is not the first name on the lips of producers when they are casting a movie. Jessica needs to understand that she is just a pretty face and that she is not going to get any A-List projects . . . EVER!!! She needs to work out what exactly her acting career entails and she needs to stop criticizing everybody else for her failures.

And, P.S. Jessica . . . Robert DeNiro is no longer the A-List star he once was so working with him twice in one year is nothing to get excited about. Now, if Clint Eastwood called . . .

  9. devilgirl says:

Why is she sitting like a statue in that one pic?

  10. Miss A says:

If you hate it so much, THEN QUIT! Argh.

  11. Arianna says:

SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY ALBA

  12. gabs says:

God I hope no one hires her after this. Is she sleeping with Robert Rodriguez? Why does he put her in his movies? Shes AWFUL! She blames screenwriters and directors for her crappy acting? Are you serious? Hate her so much now

  13. NayNay says:

Excellent, she is pretty much insuring that she never stars in another movie ever again. Keep talking Jessica, this is exactly what I was hoping for, because I cannot stand this bitch. I guess she forgot that old saying, “never bite the hand that feeds you”. In my opinion, she is a useless piece of trash.

  14. bellaluna says:

This. Bitch. “Haven’t been swimming in the deep end”?!

Girlfriend, you’re not even out of the Kiddie Pool, even after all these years.

  15. Samigirl says:

I don’t see how a first time director makes her a terrible actress? Or maybe because they were first time directors it was because they made the mistake of casting her in their films. I hope nobody else casts her. Then she will learn to stop bad mouthing her directors.

  16. Sandy says:

She will be nothing more than a Beverly Hills house wife soon. Maybe have a talk show on E!

  17. mollyb says:

I’ve heard her make other comments in that past that make her seem really uncomfortable with her Hispanic heritage, which makes me sad. My mother came her from Mexico and I would love to see more Hispanic actors. I remember also reading an interview with her years ago where she talked about how all the women in her family are overweight and how she promised herself she would never be like that. I don’t know, I applaud her make healthy decisions but it seemed like an ugly way to talk about your family to the press.

  18. clare says:

    Directors, listen up:
Put her in a movie with Jessica Biehl and call it “SNORE”.

  19. Siren6 says:

I’m really not sure why some actors try and be celebrities, when they would really do better paying more attention to improving their craft and less attention trying to sound good in interviews. Because some actors – Jessica Alba – seem to have perpetual foot-in-mouth disease and couldn’t get to the end of an interview without pissing someone off if they tried. Better to just sit there and look pretty.

  20. lexa says:

Machete was an awful movie, mostly because of the bad acting, especially from this lady here. Now I know why! She was allowed to have input on her character!

  21. T says:

zzzzzzzzzzz I’m sorry, did she say something?

  22. ziggy says:

she needs to shut her stupid trap.

  23. dejii says:

Wow. I think she is absolutely gorgeous…perfect really, but man is she DUMB!! I love how she tries to act so SMART, too. It’s actually kind of embarassnig, b/c obviously you know she’s not…even in interviews, I get embarassed for her. She tries to act smart, sweet, cute, etc. She’s none of that. She really needs to just quit acting. Why does she even still do it?? She has HOW many razzies??? Would U NOT be embaressed??

  24. krissy says:

C’mon now, it’s obvious her real problem is that she is just too good of an actress for someone so beautiful.

I’m sure her crying scene in the cinematic master piece Fantastic 4 the sequel was so well acted they had to edit it down to prevent the audience from falling into hysterics while watching.

  25. Cel says:

How many bad/so-so films have I been to just because there is an actor that I liked in a part? Plenty, and I have usually enjoyed them solely because of the ability of said actor.

If she was any good at all it wouldn’t make a difference that the script/director wasn’t the best, great actors still stand out.

    Unfortunately she sucks.

  26. Morgan says:

    She’s just digging herself into a hole…

  27. Bailey says:

Stoopid! yes, I know I misspelled that word. Everything she says comes off as dumb and dumber.

  28. Sigh. says:

    Man.

Who is left on the list to blame for her own mediocrity?
    The limo drivers?
    Kraft Catering Services?

If she has PR, they need to be fired.
If she doesn’t, they need to be hired, then fired.

  29. Eleonor says:

The truth is that she’s talentless, but fortunately we don’t have to worry about her too much: she’s ruining her so-called-career with her hands.. And now she’s not working because nobody wants her,no, she’s not working because there aren’t directors right for her.Yes darling I get it It’s not that Jessica sucks, It’s Stanely Kubrick who’s dead!

  30. December says:

Wow, this girl is really far up her own ass, isn’t she?

She needs to learn from people like Megan Fox, that when you go around bad mouthing the people of Hollywood and the other aspects of it, the scripts will stop coming in.

Pretty soon all Jessica will have left is to show up for events, do some straight to DVD movies, or be a music video girl.

  31. heathen says:

She is beautiful and that is the ONLY reason she has any kind of career. She should accept that and stop trying to blame the guy who mows her lawn for her crappy acting.

  32. normades says:

@mslewis: Sorry Robert De Niro is a LEGEND, he will be A list till he dies

  33. NayNay says:

    @December:

You hit the nail right on the head. You are 100% right.

  34. Newbie says:

    she’s unbelievably irritating.

  35. Iggles says:

She’s such a loser. The girl isn’t smart. She married some ugly douche who was cheating on her BEFORE they got engaged and married her in shotgun wedding. And she can’t act or pick good projects to save her life.

Whatever, i’m being snarky today and calling it as I see it.

  36. GatsbyGal says:

No no, Jessica, your problem in Silver Surfer wasn’t your retarded crying. It was that you were supposed to be playing Sue Storm, who is a scientist…as in, a really effing intelligent woman. And you simply do not have the acting chops to pull off “intelligent lady scientist.” On your best day, you could maybe play “girl with a GED” but that might be pushing it.

  37. TG says:

@ dejii: – You took the words right out of my mouth. Everyone else on here seems to have similar sentiments about this dumb girl.

@Cel – I will also watch a movie solely for an actor, but this bimbo isn’t one of them. Catherine O’Hara is one of them. That movie with Heigel and Kutcher was so stupid but O’Hara’s parts were delicious and she always delivers in her movies. I could name others but you get the idea.

And I wonder what goes on behind closed doors when Alba’s agents get together without her. I mean, obviously when she is in the room they fawn over her and make her feel darn special, but when she is gone they must talk reality about their dumb, talentless actress they have to support. Also, Alba should have applied for the Robobride position when there was an opening at the Cruise house.

  38. Harmony says:

I would be pissed, too, if a director told me to “cry pretty”. But that said, she should know that her looks are why she’s in this business. Thats why directors cast her. If they’re looking for a dramatic actress she is not exactly who comes to mind…If you want to get cast as a dramatic actress you have to prove yourself as one. Why should it be handed to you on a silver platter? Your fun parts already are and you should be appreciative for them and take them for what they are.

  39. Who Cares says:

I don’t see anything wrong with those quotes. She’s blaming the directors for the crappy movies she was in, which has nothing to do with her acting. Those were bad movies (badly directed as a whole), period. In the second quote, she’s just saying the guy wanted her to cry “pretty”, which is pretty unnatural. I don’t think she’s an Oscar worthy actress or anything, but there is nothing outrageous here.

  40. xxxyyy says:

nothing about her acting looks too real. she’s dumb as hell and so full of herself

  41. Ilovemee says:

I predict she will win an Oscar in the near future. Trust.

  42. Kim says:

I predict she will have a reality show in the near future.

  43. Jeri says:

Are her and Hegle (Knocked Up) bffs? They should be.

  44. original kate says:

i blame jessica’s acting for her history of bad performances.

  45. Lynne says:

she’s just shooting herself in the foot. smooth move, ex-lax.

  46. jover says:

Thank you December the only difference between her and Megafarse is that Megafarse is completely plastic; btw, I was unaware that Jessicadope ever identified with her hispanic heritage (isn’t she also french canadian or something), so why would she turn down parts that would typecast as hispanic when she never identified with latin culture in the first place. Looks like she’s casting for support from anywhere to salvage her “career.”

  47. LolaBella says:

So she’s pissing off screenwriters AND directors – two of the most essential individuals to an actor?

At this rate she’ll probably never be offered another role…

    …oh wait…

  48. The Bobster says:

It was the directors. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

  49. lucy2 says:

Everyone’s fault but her own, I see. Sorry, but if a director is telling you to just have a flat expression and they’ll CGI the tears in, TAKE THE HINT and quit acting. She’s beautiful and should stick to modeling – but most importantly needs to shut it.
Next she’ll be blaming her agents.

  50. wonderwoman21 says:

She didn’t want to get type cast a Latina actress but she let herself be type cast as a bimbo? Well, is it type casting if she really is a bimbo? I am beyond words to express how unbearably stupid, vapid, and moronic this girl is. I mean, c’mon, Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz are not only Latina actresses but they also have accents & are also from other countries and they still get really good roles. With Jessica Alba the danger never was her her heritage but her lack of acting abilities and the fact that the only roles she could ever fulfill are the ones where she can stand there as a pile of attractive flesh.

  51. lu says:

Maybe it is true that the directors are bad, but she is no one to talk about their lack of talent, she isnt even close to good and aren’t the directors the ones who hire actors?

  52. Anti-icon says:

Her entire messaging system is broken. Jessica Alba should spend any precious minute she can get in front of a real journalist explaining how grateful she is to be a working mother. A working actress who has had nothing but LUCKY breaks her entire career.

She might appeal to the Home Shopping Crowd, where they can insult the cameraman to the viewer’s delight.

  53. dahlia47 says:

She’s so quick to call out people! She really doesn’t care, does she? She can blame others all she wants, she’s still a VERY BAD ACTRESS.

  54. dahlia47 says:

@Who cares: nobodies forcing her to be in crappy movies. Right? I don’t think so.

  55. mslewis says:

Or maybe because they were first time directors it was because they made the mistake of casting her in their films.
    —————————————————————
Oh, snap!! You hit the nail right on the head!! A first-time director with no veto power was told to hire this bimbo when he prefered someone (anyone) else. Besides that, Alba was probably really cheap. I mean, she can’t make more than a million or two per movie, can she? That’s really cheap talent in Hollywood.

@mslewis: Sorry Robert De Niro is a LEGEND, he will be A list till he dies
    —————————————————
You are absolutely right . . . DeNiro is a legend but, these days, he is accepting any and all movies offered to him without discrimation and some of those movies are truly awful and they are demeaning to his iconic status. It appears to me that DeNiro needs the money, unlike other icons like Eastwood who can do whatever the hell he wants. DeNiro can’t do that; I wish he could but he can’t. He will always be a “legend” but he is no longer a “star.” Sorry, but it’s true.

Re: Alba and her hispanic heritage. . . I read something she said once about her father. It seems she introduced her father to George Lopez (that comedian who used to have a TV series) and when Lopez greeted Mr. Alba in spanish, Alba’s father said “I don’t understand you because I don’t speak Mexican”!! Jessica said she was embarrassed but that shows you why Jessica might have a problem talking about her Mexican heritage.

  56. Kim says:

She cant act period. She is famous/picked for roles for her looks. Does she really think its anything more? She needs a reality check- she gets cheesy roles because she CANT ACT. She is NOT leading lady material hence why she doesnt get those roles so good thing she is ok with that (yeah right).

  57. truthzbetta says:

I love that the writer mentions she whispered “first time directors.”

I hope she giggles “photographers are lame and unimportant to me” next so we can see what she looks like half lit with a gigantic zit on her nose. Keep talking Alba, you’ve almost ended this annoying working actress thing that was so beneath you for good. Or tell us what you really think of moviegoers so we can just cut to the chase 🙂

  58. Liana says:

aren’t the directors the ones who hire actors?
    ************

The producers usually have more say than most directors. There are a few directors who have the clout to choose their actors, but not the majority.

  59. jemshoes says:

Alba, Heigl and Goopy all seem to me to be cut of the same cloth – and there’s no “lost in translation” excuse for all of the things they say in interviews because these women actually do mean what they say, and they do want to come across that way when they say it.

  60. CB Rawks says:

“moving her brown Wayfarers toward her boxy Burberry bag”

What an annoying, pathetic excuse for writing that is. Hey look everyone, we managed to name-drop the irrelevant crap she brought with her. Can we get paid now?

  61. dejii says:

    CB — for real.

  62. LT says:

Bad-mouthing writers AND directors? Smart. Good God it’s like full on word vomit.

  63. LT says:

@CB Rawks – I took that as a subtle way to point out her materialism. Like it needed pointing out.

  64. connie says:

so who is to blame for the cinematic masterpiece that is honey?

  65. René De Beaumarchais says:

    What a shitty actress.

  66. By says:

Just because you can say you were in a De Niro movie does not make you a good actress honey, so quit believing that!
