Willow Smith: “I can’t do whatever I want, Mommy has to say it’s okay”

Willow Smith is interviewed in the new W Magazine, all for her newfound super-star music career. It’s nice to see that she’s still a kid, though, and she still refers to her “mommy” and “daddy” in interviews. Still just a kid, albeit one who has a major hit and is going to back an album on Jay-Z’s label.

It’s hard to imagine, but Willow Smith has twice the charisma of her superstar parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. At just 10 years old, she has already scored a hit single—“Whip My Hair,” which bumps as hard as anything by Beyoncé—and a contract with Jay-Z’s powerhouse Roc Nation.

“I like the way Billy Idol sings,” she says about her musical influences. “Mommy turned me on to him. And I like Lady Gaga’s songs.”

One-on-one, Willow is more articulate than many adults; what’s more amazing is that she comes off as a normal kid who’s just following her interests.

“I can’t do whatever I want,” she explains. “Mommy has to say it’s okay.” Although she is “focusing on music right now,” it seems a given that Willow will eventually end up on the big screen; her brother Jaden became a celebrity in his own right after taking the lead role in the recent Karate Kid remake.

“Mommy and Daddy inspired me to be a performer,” Willow says. “I get my flow from Daddy, my singing ability from Mommy, and the camera stuff from both. That’s just what happens when you hang out with the Smiths!”

[From W Magazine]

Whatever, I know some people are going to hate on her, but I kind of like her. She seems like a cool kid, and it seems like her parents are really trying to monitor how much exposure she gets to the industry. We’ll see.

By the way, did everyone see Jimmy Fallon (as Neil Young) and the actual Bruce Springsteen cover “Whip My Hair”? It’s kind of awesome. I prefer this version:

Goodness she is a pretty girl 🙂
That is so refreshing to see a child who still loves and appreciates her parents 🙂 She is having fun being a 10 year old, and in no hurry to grow up. Love that, and love this girl!

  2. devilgirl says:

Willow’s hair in the top photo reminds me of Eleanor Roosevelt.

    LOL@Jimmy Fallon.

  3. searching4grace says:

its nice to see a kid doing something because her parents love and support her and not because they want to milk her for money and fame. i like that her parents are protective but still let her try something new.

  4. RHONYC says:

will & jada adopt me please!

    “just whip it!”

    lol 🙂

  5. Missfit says:

She’s so STINKIN CUTE…I want to stick her in my pocket and take her home, lol

  6. irishserra says:

Yes, the Springsteen/Fallon version is much better.

  7. Alejandro says:

She’s cute and has nice little stage presence even at her young age. Girls should be looking up to her and not skanky Cyrus.

  8. omondieu says:

Not digging the blinged-out fake nails in the second photo, but I’d hope that those were just for the photoshoot, and that she doesn’t wear them when she’s out and about.

  9. anti says:

    #6 — i totally agree!

  10. Louwho says:

Does this kid go to school?

  11. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I love the Smith family. I am sick of seeing the same old Disney kinda girls, they shouldn’t be the only kinda kid celebs out there and I am glad younger girls in my fam have some options.

I loved Jimmy Fallon’s version of Whip my Hair, Jimmy and Bruce were awesome. I watched it on Huffington Post a few days ago and I thought the comments were kinda mean about the different versions. If your a dinosaur, a yuppie, like country music, no Willow’s version isn’t for you. Its not necessary to be a jerk. Those Huffpo people…ugh. I however really like both versions.

  12. baby says:

i think she’s cute! and i like her song!

  13. Deeta says:

I am really dissapointed that the Smiths are not trying to protect their children from all the bullshit that the entertainment industry exposes them to. As much as they think they may be “protecting” them – these kids are not getting to be kids. I always thought Will Smith was a smart man – but after I see how he is pimping his children, I dont think so anymore.

And this girl’s talent? Please! She had absolutely no input in that song – this song could have been sold to anybody. And her stage presence is not great, I saw her in her only live lip-synching performance in Ellen. She didnt look like anything particularly talented. I am not saying that she sucks… but there just isnt any especial talent. If this girl wasnt the daughter of Will Smith, she wouldnt be here.

  14. lilo-donotpassgo-donotcollect says:

i enjoy how she knows she is a child in a very adult business, and that her parents are extremely involved in making sure she doesn’t go off course.

best of luck to this little one.

  15. Megan says:

i thought her song sounded too grown up… she just seems too young, she should be playin w/ barbies not making hoochie music

  16. abel says:

    so cute .. she’s gunna be F I E R C E! -whips hair- lol

  17. Kiki says:

I love little Willow, love the song, and love Jimmy Fallon’s version. I know there are people out there who worry about doing too much too young. I really think that Will and Jada have been in the business for so long that they will be able to keep her grounded and do right by her. She is too cute!

  18. Kim says:

I find it interesting that people criticize this family yet I never read criticism of the Fannings for allowing Dakota and Elle to act from the time they were 4 or 5 – Sometimes in R rated movies.Where is the criticism of the parents of the kids on sitcoms like Modern Family?

  19. Atticus says:

If you are being raised by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, showbiz is going to be in your blood. It seems like the kids are doing their gigs because they love them and want to do them, and clearly the parents are very involved with their careers (in a healthy way, not a domineering stage parent kind of way) – love how Willow says “I can’t just do what I want, mommy has to say it’s ok”.

Surely these kids are getting breaks other kids don’t because their parents are so famous and well established in the industry, but you can’t teach charisma and Willow has it coming out of her pores.

  20. Cheyenne says:

    Well, good for mommy! 🙂

  21. anoneemouse says:

What a lucky lucky girl! Good for her!

  22. 4Real says:

Hmmmmm growing up a little too fast for me but whateva!! She aint my kid!

  23. Vi says:

she seems a bit full of herself which i’m guessing is also what happens when you hang out with the smiths but she’s still a kid so maybe she’ll grow out of it.

  24. jen says:

Uh oh-better hide that burger/milkshake photo from the food police!

  25. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    I think she’s too young.

  26. Jeri says:

Is her statement reality or a sound-bite she was coached in?

  27. Sara says:

Oh come on, the Smith’s aren’t going to be like the Lohans! They have the money and influence to protect their kids from Hollywood (I would hope)!

  28. Lola7 says:

    Nepotism at its best.

  29. Jeri says:

The Smiths’ will protect their children like Tom protects Suri. “Let them eat cake.”

  30. craigc says:

who CARES about this little person…

  31. Heather says:

    She’s 9. she’s hard to hate. I hope she does well. ^_^

  32. Gabriela says:

Ugh. I don’t buy it. I don’t buy this ‘I’m a regular kid, just like everyoe else’ pose.

  33. Tanga says:

I am curios Deeta, Is it that you feel no child should be involved in the entertainment field or just the Smith children? And why do you think that they are “pimping” their children? I don’t see them involved in every Hollywood function and they always seem to be escorted by one or both parents,so how are they unprotected?

  34. Tanga says:

    Sorry about the typos:)

  35. Incognita says:

Willow is absolutely adorable and wish nothing but the best for her! I smiled when she acknowledged that her parents has the final say about what happens in her life. I can’t stand it when a child star’s parents attempt to them kids – instead of accepting their roles as parents. For example, who would allow their under-aged child cohabitate with their boyfriend? I guess the Cyrus family realize who their cash cow is and allows her to rule the roost.

  36. Wresa says:

I like her, and think she has charisma to spare. Hopefully her voice will mature as she does.

That said, “Whip My Hair” makes me fear I will have a seizure while driving…

  37. tattoofreak says:

I never called my mom “mommy” or my dad “daddy”..not even when i was a little kid- it sounds way too weird to me. I would never call them that.

  38. Kim says:

That song is horrible! Her whiny high pitched voice sounds like a cat in heat.

  39. Kim says:

Its fine for show biz to be in her blood but she is to young to be doing what she is doing period. 10 year old should be focused on school, friends and perhaps a sport or art or dance class. Not being paraded on red carpets and making music with grown adults.

She is being robbed of a childhood whether she sees that or not. Guaranteed when she is older she will regret not doing normal kid things. Every grown up child star says they regret not going to school prom, doing normal things kids their age do.

In this sense her parents are pimping her out because they should be trying to give her stability at her age and a routine not have her focused on fame.

  40. chris says:

    I love her.

  41. nnn says:

I like this little girl but i don’t like the artist.

It’s not because of the artist it’s because she is damn to young to have an ADULT job, period !

It’s great that her parents support her passion, just like sportchildren are supported by their parents, just like MOST parents should support and actually support their children passion wether it is in doing a sport, playing an instrument, by looking at them having a football match with other children, encourage them, putting them in clubs, singing classes, ect.

I think even if you are precocious, there is a time for everything and mainly it is always the time to teach your children an important virtue : patience.

You want to be a doctor, a singer, a sportwoman : work hard in both school and at your passion and when the time is up later, even if it is before hitting 18, you will appreciate even more and understand better what it really demands, not only in terms of your core passion, but your image.

Also going to school will open your horizon and gives you a broader palet of interests and enrich your passion whille adding some.

It’s just a matter of teaching your kid patience and balance and timing to limit the risks of burning up at a tender age without giving them other weapons, other perspectives to fall out, to strengten themselves in one of the most aggressive industry.

  42. Lanette says:

    she’s a nice kid.

  43. KJ says:

If this little girl keeps her great attitude with the talent she already exhibits-she will far exceed both of her parents. Her song rocks!!

  44. Newbie says:

she’s such a pretty little girl! sorry, didn’t bother reading the article.

  45. GG says:

PLEASE stop giving this kid press. She is an average kid with wacked parents. Let her make her own way. My God this is ridiculous!!

  46. benny says:

“Mommy and Daddy inspired me to be a performer . . . I get my flow from Daddy, my singing ability from Mommy, and the camera stuff from both.”

What a pretentious little snot. I’m not surprised, given what total phonies her parents are. I’ll repeat this story whenever they try to pass as a “grounded” family: they showed up at a movie event JUST TO GIVE AN INTERVIEW about how they were leaving the event to be at home with their sick kid, because that’s just the kind of great parents they are. If the kid’s so sick, why leave in the first place? So they could give an interview, of course, telling the world how great they are. Absolute phonies. I see the acorn didn’t fall far from the tree.

  47. Kim says:

OMG I’ve gone to work with a sick child at home being watched by mother in law. Also my kids call me “mommy”.Spooky! GMAB As I stated yesterday should all kids be banned from the red carpet and acting/ singing careers or just the Smith kids.I guess those actors from Harry Potter should hasve been banned from the RC until they turned 18 or the kids on the family sitcoms like Modern Family.

  48. Cleo says:

    Look at her narrow silhouette!

  49. benny says:

The point isn’t that they left a sick kid at home. People do that. And people give up work to stay with sick kids. But these people left the kid in the first place SIMPLY SO THEY COULD GIVE AN INTERVIEW about returning home because they’re such great parents. If they wanted to be with the kid, fine; if they wanted to leave, fine. But apparently, they wanted to leave the kid just long enough TO GIVE AN INTERVIEW ABOUT WHAT GREAT PARENTS THEY ARE, and that’s why they’re skipping the event to go home. If they wanted to be home with the kid (their choice), WHY LEAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE TO GIVE AN INTERVIEW ABOUT WHAT GREAT PARENTS THEY ARE?!?! That’s what bugs the crap out of me. They’re the biggest phonies in Hollywood.

  50. khaveman says:

Her outfit looks likes she raided someone older’s closet to play dress-up. Way too old for 9.

  51. jaye E says:

@#38…your comment has me convinced that you’ve never listened to the song. Her voice is far from “high pitched” and “whiny”.

@tattoofreak…My son called me mommy until he was about 7 or 8, I called my parents mommy and daddy probably until I was 13 or 14. I don’t know anyone personally who DIDN’T call their parents mommy and daddy when they were little kids. Maybe it’s YOUR behavior that is abnormal.

@benny…it’s your ASSUMPTION that they showed up just to give that interview…it’s not fact.

And YUCK to adults who bag on kids. Just GROSS behavior. And I agree with the person who made the comment about there being no objections to the Fanning girls or the HP kids, or the Breslin children doing RC. Interesting…

  52. MrsKrabapple says:

Please don’t show that pic of her drinking soda ever again. Please. It creeps me out. Halloween is over.

  53. Michael says:

    she is cutesy. for now.
