Jim Carrey says Ewan McGregor is “a great kisser” & “a dream come true”

Back in 2008, Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor made a film called I Love You Phillip Morris, all about two men who fall in love in prison. It’s supposed to be a comedy-drama, and it never sounded like the some kind of super-Oscar bait, nor like a crowd-pleasing mindless popcorn film. But it’s didn’t really sound bad, either. So it’s slightly surprising to me that it’s taken until now to get a release date – it was in distribution purgatory after concerns were raised over the raunchiness of some of the (gay) sex scenes between Ewan and Jim. Also surprising – Jim and Ewan are both standing by this project, and they both really seem to like each other. Strange bedfellows…

Anyway, the film comes out this Friday, in limited release. Jim Carrey sat down with Parade Magazine to promote the release, at long last- although it sounds a lot like past interviews. Jim has said the line about kissing Ewan before:

Jim Carrey takes it to the limit and beyond in the very R-rated I Love You Phillip Morris, loosely based on the life of convicted Texas con man and four-time prison escapee Steven Russell. He ends up having a mad affair behind bars with another prisoner played by Ewan McGregor.

Carrey tells Parade’s Jeanne Wolf what attracted him to the most off-beat role of his career and his long-term goal of helping to make the world a better place.

It’s all about love.
“There are very few scripts that I would come across that I would pay to do and this was one of them. I didn’t mind taking a big salary cut. I’m here to do extreme and interesting things. I liked the guy I played and I hated him. But the one thing that always stayed with me was the idea that he was relentless about love, and all of us understand that. I’m a desperate man myself.”

As for locking lips with Ewan McGregor, who plays his lover.
“A dream come true. I mean, look at the guy. I have to say, he is a great kisser. As Ewan said, ‘When you’re kissing another guy it can get a little prickly.’ Actually, you had to put out of your mind your own sexual preference and just try to understand that you were loving another person who just happens to be a guy. It wasn’t about male or female, love is love.”

What he had in common with his character.
“He had blind faith in himself. I have that. I have that belief that I can do probably more than I’m qualified to do. The guy I play definitely has no limits. The things he was able to finagle his way into are just shocking and amazing. You can’t help admire that quality in people. That’s why we love con artist movies.”

What’s driving him?
“There’s always some sort of deep undercurrent running under things for me. I’ve had peaks of kind of enlightenment where I felt like, ‘Oh, wow. I’ve got to figure it out. This is it. OK. I have peace. I have bliss.’ And, then, boom, off the wave into the surf, and you’re struggling again. I definitely have those scared to death moments, but they’re what make you interesting.”,

And who needs an agent when you have the man upstairs.
“What’s important to me is the long haul. It’s a strange thing, but sometimes I think that God is somehow fashioning my life so that I do stay interested and stay hungry.”

[From Parade]

Beyond the stuff about the film, how does Jim sound to you? I still worry about him. I worry that he’s not taking his meds, and that his “peaks of enlightenment” are some kind of manic-depressive high. That being said, Jim sounds like he’s in a pretty good place right now, so God bless. I hope someone goes to see this film. Apparently, Ewan goes down on Jim on camera.

Here’s an interesting photo of Jim, Ewan and… Ewan’s date for this particular night, Melanie Laurent, his alleged mistress. Interesting.

    Has anyone read this book?

  2. WYIJM says:

This was released in South Africa a while ago. It’s quite sweet rather than raunchy or graphic.

  3. fabgrrl says:

Sometimes I remember why I love Jim Carrey :^)

  4. Sophie says:

I’ve seen it in the UK. It’s a good film, and there’s nothing too explict at all. It’s pretty funny in some places as well.

  5. acidburn says:

It was also released here in Portugal a year ago, I guess; and it is totally harmless and funny.

I just dont get why it was not released yet in States.

Although i dont like Jim very much, in this movie his perfect. They really make the perfect couple!

  6. LindaR says:

I can’t stand Jim Carrey. I cringe at every remark that comes out of his huge, yawning maw.

  7. Eve says:

and that his “peaks of enlightenment” are some kind of manic-depressive high

“Manic-depressive high” still sounds better than “might become a scientologist” to me.

P.S.: “I love you Philip Morris” has already been released on DVD in Brazil.

I will fight Jim Carrey for Ewan & I will win!!

I saw this at the Virginia Film Festival about a month ago, and I loved it. Very funny (incredible to believe it’s all a true story!), and like a poster above mentioned, the central love story is portrayed in a sweet way, as opposed to an explicit sexual relationship purely for shock value. Both Jim and Ewan were excellent, though Ewan really is something special. He’s fantastic in this. I hope this gets some love when it gets a wide(r) release here in the States.

Jim Carrey has something about him I can’t hate, it’s as though he knows his movies blow and he’s putting us all on, meh, he may not be cerebral but he sure is one wacky dude and don’t we need more of them?

  11. Devon says:

I really enjoyed the film and it’s a shame it hasn’t been released in North America yet.

  12. Lanette says:

JIM CARREY’S Hair is All Kinds of wrong it just isss.

  13. girl says:

So glad it got a release date here in the States. I hope they don’t edit things out so that it won’t “offend” anyone’s “sensibilities”. If you think it will offend you, open your mind a little bit or DON’T SEE THE MOVIE.

I do think many people here have issues with seeing two men kiss and be affectionate with one anoher. Funny how not as many have the same issues when it is two women kissing.

Edited to add: Rodrigo Santoro is in it according to the films website. I must have missed mention of him earlier. I am totally there.

  14. Hollowdoll says:

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Jim. He rocked my world many moons ago.

I am looking forward to seeing this movie. I mean it has Ewen “hotpants” McGregor in it. nuff said.

  15. Lanette says:

I’ll be passing on this movie.

  16. chasingadalia says:

    @ Eve: haha. Too true.

I dunno, I think I would actually see it just to see if Jim Carrey can pull it off.

  17. meg says:

I remember hearing about this movie some time ago and thinking it was another “Thank you for not smoking” type deal…but if Ewan’s in it, I gotta see it! BTW- he’s aging really well

  18. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

OMG. Dunno if I can see this or not. Love em both but wow. That’s all I have right now.

  19. kTEX says:

I read the book and it is pretty good. The guy who wrote it lives in my neighborhood. Cannot wait to see the movie.

  20. Mistral says:

Aww. They are both adorable. Hope Ewan isn’t stepping out on his wife though :s…

  21. Mairead says:

I’ve seen it and, perhaps because I had such high hopes for it, I was a little disappointed. It’s a very “The Informant” type film, but just isn’t as tight or even as funny as that.

But BY GOD Jim and Ewan have the hottest sexual chemistry on screen that I have seen in years!!!!
(Mind you, Ewan would have sexual chemistry with a pot plant) 😈

  22. BamaGuy says:

This is a magnificent film, funny and fascinating – because it is true (and the character Jim Carrey plays is in prison for life). Carrey is great as the lead, but Ewan McGregor is magnificent, funny and adorable with a perfect southern accent. I love them both for making this film!

  23. Sara says:

LOVE Ewan!!! He gets BETTER with age!!

  24. Lucy says:

Is Ewan cheating on his wife???
