Martha Stewart elated to become a grandmother

Alexis Stewart
Martha Stewart is preparing to be the best grandma ever. Her daughter Alexis is using a surrogate to have a baby and Martha is “on cloud nine,” according to the National Enquirer.

According to family sources, 45-year-old Alexis, who struggled to conceive for years, is using a surrogate to help her become a mother. The baby is due in the spring.

“Martha is so excited to be a grandma,” a close family friend told The Enquirer. “But she is also happy because her only daughter’s dream is finally coming true.”

Alexis first tried to have a baby at age 37, when she was married to John Cuti, but she put those plans on hold when Martha when to prison for securities fraud. Alexis and Cuti divorced in 2004, but Alexis still wanted a child and tried in vitro fertilization several times to no avail.

After jail, Martha went through more hardships. Her mother died in 2007, and she broke up with billionaire Charles Simonyi in 2008. Simonyi went on to marry a woman 32 years younger.

That’s when Alexis first began to consider using a surrogate to have a baby.

“Martha was bereft,” said the family friend. “She told Alexis that the only thing that could possibly pick her spirits up would be for her to have a child — and she didn’t care how she did it!”

…To find her surrogate, Alexis was helped by a family attorney and chose a married woman in her late 30s who lives in rural Pennsylvania, a four-hour drive from Martha’s daughter in New York City. The woman has already been a surrogate twice before, says the family friend.

“Alexis is about to burst with excitement. She speaks to the woman regularly to see how she is progressing, because she wants to be involved in the whole process,” the family friend continued. “She wants to be a hands-on mom from the womb.”

Martha, 69, has been pushing for grandchildren for years, say insiders.

Alexis once told a reporter: “My mom’s just desperate. She has wanted grandchildren forever. She’s always like, ‘For my birthday, I would like you to be pregnant.’ And I’m like, ‘Me, too!'”

No word on who provided the sperm that fertilized Alexis’s egg. According to Wikipedia, surrogacy is illegal in New York but legal in Pennsylvania.

This might be a little creepy on Martha’s part if Alexis wasn’t just as anxious for the baby too.

Alexis currently co-hosts the show Whatever with Alexis and Jennifer on the Hallmark network. Martha also recently moved The Martha Stewart Show to Hallmark.

Expect to see hand-made rattles and baby bonnets on future episodes of Martha. She already has some really cute puppets made from washcloths on her Web site.

    That’s nice.

I’m happy for Alexis, but, having listened to her on Sirius and watched her show, I think she is a very negative, entitled and weird woman. I hope she is a good mother.

Martha has her ‘recipe’ for sperm…it’s on her website, she even sells the baster

  6. Tess says:

I can relate to their happiness.

But jeesh, what a bunch of craziness (which, Martha, is NOT a good thing) this child may inherit. Along with millions (maybe billions) of dollars.

Any man in the picture or will this be an all-female, all-the-time, show?

  7. JSal says:

Is it me or do those two look more like sisters? I saw one other pic of Alexis and she actually looked like Martha’s mother.

    Happy for all!! congratulations.

I think that Martha is a beautiful genius. I simply love everything she does professionally. Anytime I’ve ever seen the woman, she’s always just right – dressed just right, coiffed just right, spoken just right. I have a bit of a crush on her.

But I have read many, many times that the relationship between her and Alexis is “strained” at best. Martha appears to be emotionally detached, and Alexis appears to be (really, really) full of anger. If I recall correctly, Tim Gunn has a story about the venom Alexis demonstrates toward Martha in his last book…but there have been many “eyewitness accounts” of their relationship troubles over the years.

Hopefully they’ve worked things out so the baby isn’t stuck in a cold, prickly family.

poor baby, the only worse mother than Martha I can think of is Alexis

Very true — happily, Alexis doesn’t deny that, she just blames it on being the product of Martha Stewart. Seriously, (and not defending her) could anyone turn out “normal” with and OCD mom like that?

I love Martha, but if I had to live with her… yeah, I’d be a Lithium addict by now.

I’ve always put this “strained” relationship down as typical mother-daughter angst. I think Alexis loves her mother and Martha loves Alexis. It’s very difficult to grow up with a “perfect” mother and Alexis rebelled like any other child would. She has since grown up and Martha has learned to relax.

If Alexis didn’t care for her mother why would she take her mother’s side when her parents divorced? Alexis hasn’t spoken to her father since the divorce. Also, Alexis put her own life on hold when her mother was sent to prison. She stood by her mother and even rented an apartment near the prison so she could see her mother as often as possible. She didn’t have to do any of this but she did because she loves her mother.

You can believe Tim Gunn if you want (I personally think he is just a bitter old queen and is making up a lot of the stuff in that book) but I believe what I see and I see a mother and daughter who care a lot for each other.

And, also, Martha is from a very large family so this kid will have plenty of cousins to play with.

I love Martha, she is the best HBIC eva!

Congrats to Alexis, I hope that she has a happy healthy pregnancy & baby. I bet Martha is going to spoil that kid rotten! 🙂

  14. Stronzilla says:

So is this, like, something that would fall into the Martha Stewart category of arts and crafts or cooking something up in kitchen?

  15. BReed says:

Wish them all well. I only hope the new child has more personality than Alexis.Ever seen her being interviewed?

  19. MSMLNP says:

I love Martha. But her daughter is one of the most morose people I have ever seen come across my TV. She just seems miserable. Get over your mommy issues already- if that’s what her misery is being blamed on.

Hopefully, her child will bring them both happiness.

  20. Trippin says:

Martha My Dear will be a great grandmother and will probably spoil that little baby rotten. Good for them!!
    Mazeltov!!

  21. Henriette says:

I’m thinking donor eggs. Alexis has written and spoken often about the fact that her on eggs are just no longer young enough. Donor eggs are great.

  22. Hakura says:

@Lem (#10): “poor baby, the only worse mother than Martha I can think of is Alexis”

Oh? How soon we forget Kate Gosselin…

I can only take my opinion based off what’s written in this article, but it really sounds like Martha wants this baby more than Alexis does. I hate to think this way, but I could see Martha holding ‘inheritance’ over Alexis’ head as a means to force her to have a child by any means necessary. I certainly *hope* I’m wrong in that… As someone else has pointed out, NOT a good thing.

But what an inheritance it is…People have done worse for much less.

Am I the only one who can’t believe this woman is 69!?

  23. Chessie says:

    mslewis, totally agree.

They have each other’s back and stand together when the going gets tough — that’s love.

  24. C-DUB says:

I can just imagine all of the treats and lavish birthday parties this child will have. Congrats!

  25. Cleo says:

Alexis Stewart looks like Tara Subkoff.

  26. mel says:

I’m thinking egg donor too. They can’t turn bad eggs into good eggs. But whatever, they have their baby. Congrats!
