Carey Mulligan in red at the British Independent Film Awards: beautiful or fug?

Last night was the British Independent Film Awards in London, and many of this season’s awards-favorites came out to play. Here is Carey Mulligan, in an orange-red Prabal Gurung dress… I love it. On someone else, it might suck. On Carey, I adore it, especially how she’s styled it, with the simple black peep-toes and the slicked-back hair. She looks amazing, in my opinion. So chic.

Helena Bonham-Carter was in attendance too, looking like she’s wearing a costume from Alice In Wonderland. Ugh. I mean, she’s HBC, I can’t hate. But seriously, Helena. Enough.

Colin Firth and his beautiful wife Livia. I can’t say I love what Livia is wearing, but Colin looks dashing!

Oh, Ralph. He’s thinking about how he wants to bite you. Swoon.

I don’t know who Nick Moran is, I just know that we’ve gotten requests for him on HGF. Really?

Your new Sherlock Holmes, the perfectly named Benedict Cumberbatch.

And Martin Freeman! My mom loves him. He’s dressed like an old man.

I quite like the dress on Carey and I love her clutch but her hair is awful slicked back. HBC has hideous makeup and the outfit is also bad.

  2. dread pirate cuervo says:

Dear Santa, I have been a good little pirate. Please bring me Carey’s clutch. Thx much!

  3. Disco says:

Helena Bonham-Carter looks more normal than I’ve seen her in YEARS. This is down right conventional for her…

  4. jen says:

Martin Freeman looks like something you’d find at the end of a rainbow.

  5. Julia says:

    Cumberbatch, Kaiser 🙂
(Like it makes so much difference, but hey!)

ETA: and I love Martin Freeman too. Even in that jacket!

  6. PrettyTarheel says:

Wasn’t it Livia who went green for the entire red carpet season last year and blogged it? Or am I thinking of someone else? I thought I read that it was happening again this awards season, so perhaps she’s green.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong about the individual.

  7. serena says:

    I love Helena dress.
Anyway Carey’s hair and make up is not right with the dress (a bit shallow).

  8. Brianna says:

Carey needs to go back to brunette! The blonde washes her out big time.

  9. sapphire says:

Love Carey’s look. HBC is an icon, but I really wish she’d look a little less like someone threw her clothes at her. Wear them!

  10. k says:

HBC looks pretty good, for HBC

I actually love that plaid blazer Freeman is wearing.

  11. spinner says:

Love Carey’s dress but I would have worn my hair differently. She’s a pretty girl with an unusual look.

  12. Embee says:

Carey: stand up straight! You’re lovely.

Helena: your beauty continues to amaze me. And, I adore your individuality.

Firths, Feinnes and Moran: looking very nice, indeed.

Benedict Cumberbatch: knowing that you exist brightens my day. I shall say your name whenever the cold begins to drag me down.

Martin Freeman: you remind me how much I like plaid!

    Happy Monday, all.

  13. kelBear says:

    Hate the hair.

  14. The_Porscha says:

Benedict Cumberbatch is someone’s real name? Holy hell.

Anyhow, her honorable majesty HBC actually looks more put together than normal, so more power to her!

  15. Bobbie says:

Love her! She’s so cute and doesn’t seem full of herself

  16. Someone Else says:

Sherlock is such a fun show! I’m so glad to see Benedict & Martin — if you like British mysteries, keep an eye on PBS for this series. It’s excellent!

  17. I’m not really a fan of Carey Mulligan’s look in general, but I like the dress and her hair works for her.

  18. Shazza says:

Carey looks gorgeous in that dress. POSTURE! sell it!

    I love Martin Freeman!!

  19. Obvious says:

Helena looks fantastic! that dress is gorgeous on her.

  20. lola lola says:

Carey is soooo cute! Helena has such gorgeous skin & hair but those shoes are awful with that dress. Yikesa.

  21. Bodhi says:

I only have one comment: WHY DID PBS ONLY PLAY 3 OF THE NEW SHERLOCKS? WHY?!?!

Sorry to go all Kanye on y’all, but I love the new series so freaking much & I KNOW there are more than the 3 that have aired here in the States…

  22. original kate says:

carey looks great – and that clutch is totally modern and cute. HBC can do no wrong in my opinion; so talented, and she was so gorgeous in “the wings of the dove” that looking at her was like looking at a solar eclipse. oh, and also? martin freeman will always be adorable.

  23. Isabel says:

carey’s dyed hair is too harsh for her:(
I love HBC’s do whatever i want attitude. But she is not affected about her odd clothes like, say lady gaga.

Love Colin firth… so cool and by all accounts a nice man too. Ralph Fienner freaks me out; ever since i saw him in Red Dragon. OOF! never the same:)

  24. PrettyLights says:

It’s funny how HBC is always awkwardly holding an unusual purse to show it off, too funny. Like that lips purse from a month or two ago. She actually looks decent here except for the shoes. Carey looks good but a little washed out, I love that clutch though.

  25. HakuraChii says:

I think in this case I may just have something against the ‘bunched up’ look. I just can’t stand it. The color is wonderful, but it just looks like she got a safety pin caught in the top half.

  26. Maritza says:

I love Carey’s dress, clutch and hairstyle but she needs to practice posing with more confidence. Helena just wouldn’t be herself if it weren’t for her kooky outfits, she looks great.

  27. ctkat1 says:

@ Pretty Tarheel: it is Livia Firth- she blogs the award season for Vogue UK and only wears “green” designers.

I generally think she looks pretty good but I do give her a bit of a pass since she is limited in her choices. I give Natalie Portman the same pass for her vegan shoes- it’s hard to wear great shoes when you won’t wear leather or suede, and Natalie’s shoes are generally fug.

  28. Henriette says:

Firth’s wife Livia isn’t aging well. Is she a smoker?
