Carey Mulligan tells Elle UK that a doctor tried to make her do Botox

Here are the two covers for Carey Mulligan’s appearance as Elle UK’s January cover girl. The photos are by David Slijper. I think the images are very striking, and I love my girl and everything, but something about the angle and the hair is aging her. I don’t hate it though – Carey is one of those Cate Blanchett-types who can play anything from teenager to 50 years old. Speaking of Carey looking old-ish, that’s kind of what the cover interview is about. Carey describes an incident where a doctor (!) told her that she should Botox. For. Real.

At just 25, Carey Mulligan is one of Hollywood’s freshest-faced stars. Yet the British actress was told to get Botox in order to look more youthful, she has disclosed.

Of her visit to a Los Angeles dermatologist, Mulligan recalled: “I said, ‘I have some lines here under my eye and they’re annoying, what can you do?’ He looked at my face and said, ‘We’ll just drop some Botox in here and here…’.

“I said, ‘What the —-? I’m only 25, are you joking?’ So I can’t move my face? Isn’t that, well, the antithesis of what I’m trying to do as an actress? Only in LA would someone try and give you Botox when you’re 25 years old.”

The star of An Education has won plaudits for her quirky style but claims to feel “intensely uncomfortable” on the red carpet.

“I’ve never felt like a sexy person. I’ve always felt like a sensible person. I’ve always felt absurd wearing anything revealing,” she told Elle magazine.

The actress also confided that she loathes her much-copied gamine hairstyle. “I hate my hair. After An Education, I had a small part in Michael Mann’s film Public Enemies and he wanted me to dye it white blonde, and it wrecked my hair. Literally, ruined it. It was falling apart, fried. So I had to cut it off. I cried.”

Although tipped to land a second Oscar nomination for Never Let Me Go, Mulligan admitted to disappointment at missing out on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the forthcoming Stieg Larsson adaptation. “I auditioned for it but I didn’t get the part,” she said, adding that watching another actress play the part would be “agony”.

[From The Telegraph]

The old saying in Hollywood is that you should never tell what roles you passed on (or what size a man‘s dong is), but I think saying what parts you auditioned for and lost is fine. It actually makes me like her even more thinking that she’s so emotionally invested in roles she only auditioned for.

As for the Botox thing – WTF, doctors? She’s cute as a button, she can move her face, and she’s a great little actress. Not all actresses have to come from The Starlet Starter Kit. Dumbasses.

She’s a cute girl and a good actress, but OY, that b&w picture is, EEK! D:

  2. Obvious says:

Love the last pic. She’s so cute. I know how she fees about chopping off the hair. And I love how she admits it.

  3. Louwho says:

Love her hair in the last pic – I like her.

  4. Liana says:

I really like this girl. She comes across as very real.

  5. WhiteNoise says:

Love the 1st Elle cover (on the left), skintone beautiful, colours and styling great, and she looks gorgeous.

  6. Hakura says:

It’s also nice to hear an actress admit “Hey, I tried for something and didn’t get it, I was disappointed!”…Like *real* people, they don’t always do everything well or get their way, like some actors and actresses will come across.

She’s adorable. I guess the ‘idea’ of getting botox early is that if you can’t make expressions, you can’t develope ‘lines’. It’s insane.

  7. Jackson says:

I really love Carey. She’s cute, a good actress, and seems so normal and unaffected. I can totally relate to that whole dressing revealing/sexy comment, too. However, if she went to the doctor asking what he can do for the lines under her eyes, well, his answer was Botox. Ask a question, get an answer. I still love her though!

  8. Rosina says:

She reminds me of Katie Holmes in the bottom picture.

  9. lola lola says:

She’s adorable and also a great actor but she can’t really be shocked that someone in Hollywood asked her to get Botox, can she? Not saying its right but it’s hardly a surprise. That’s how Hollywood has always treated actresses!

  10. Gwen says:

I really like her. I hope she stays as real as she seems to be now.

  11. Trish says:

She said SHE asked the Dr. what he could do about the lines under her eyes, he SUGGESTED botox. How is that trying to MAKE her get toxed? Cute girl, not too bright.

  12. jzhz says:

She does have an oldish looking face, but so what? It’s a fact that doesn’t detract from her talent.

  13. Brooke says:

I haven’t seen her perform so have no opinion of it, but I think it’s funny she is talking about turning down botox when it seems obvious that she probably had a blepharoplasty to open up her eyes and solve those undereye bags.

  14. Patrice says:

I love Carey! She just seems so cool and like a funny, regular girl to me : ) And for the life of me I will never understand the whole “Botox BEFORE wrinkles” phenomenon (cough couch Ashlee Simson). I mean, WTF are they getting rid of if the wrinkles aren’t even there yet??? Good for her for sticking to her (very sane) guns!

On admitting to roles that you didn’t get: The Hollywood Reporter has been doing these roundtable discussions with the ostensible Oscar nominees for actresses and actors. They’re really interesting b/c the actors actually talk to each other.

Anyway, in the actress one, the interviewer asked them to talk about roles that they wanted but didn’t get. And Hillary Swank admitted that she asked for a script, wanted the part, campaigned hard for it, and didn’t get it. And then Annette Bening (love her!) was like, “Well, who did get it?” And Amy Adams was sitting there looking really uncomfortable, and admitted that she was offered the part but had to pass on it. All of the actresses at the table were like, “We never talk about these things, this is so weird and awkward!”

It was just a peek behind the curtain that you normally never see- the way these parts actually get filled.

  16. padiddle says:

I really like her, but I don’t get how the dr. tried to get her to get botox – she was the one who went to a plastic surgeon and asked him to fix lines under her eyes – what other answer was she expecting?

  17. gabs says:

What an idiot. Shes the one who went to a dermatologist and SHE brought up her eyes. SHE asked what to do about the lines and then she acts shocked about his answer? Great actress but this was dumb. It seems like in the interview shes trying to prove how natural she is and how hollywood hasnt changed her or whatever

  18. Emily says:

Maybe she was expecting him to suggest a firming face mask or an eye cream or something like that?

  19. cherryberry says:

I love her! She is soooo adorable. I’ve thought so ever since I saw her as Sally Sparrow in a Doctor Who episode. And I think she is gorgeous just the way she is. I even had a dream where she was my boyfriend’s new girlfriend and even in my dream I had to admit, “Wow, she is gorgeous.”

  20. huhhh says:

Que paso? I agree with others. If one goes to a Hollywood dermatologist and asks what can be done about one’s wrinkles, what do you expect to hear? That question was most obviously going to be answered with “Botox.” Was she expecting they suggest getting more sleep and eating more anti-oxidant rich foods? That’s not very profitable is it Carey. If you’re seeking natural beauty regiments, go to Google, not an L.A. dermatologist.
