Tom Ford on women today: “bubble-butted, bloated- mouthed cyberbitches”

wenn2617335

Tom Ford has a new women’s line coming out, and he’s given several major interviews to the December and January issues of various fashion magazines. Photos of his new collection here – they look hella good. I loved his profile in December’s Vogue – he sounded really good. Smug, but good. He has a lot to be smug about, you know? He backs his junk up. Anyway, Tom gave an interview to Harper’s Bazaar, for their January issue – the complete article is here. It is insane how funny, raunchy and fabulous Tom Ford is. We need more Tom Ford in the world. Here are the highlights:

Rumors about Tom Ford and women: Asking Gwyneth Paltrow to bear his children on their first date, which he said was probably true, and feeling up Natalia Vodianova at fittings, which she said is definitely true, though, would top the list. Artist Rachel Feinstein might have the most salacious story of all: “He once put my breast in his mouth. That’s the most provocative thing. I remember that,” she says, laughing. “I hope he remembers that too.”

Ford reintroduced women’s sexuality to fashion: Ford’s familiarity with the female anatomy has been well documented, and not only the nether regions. (He was probably the first designer to monogram a woman’s pubic area and then use it as a fashion campaign.) During his now legendary tenure at Gucci, Ford was credited with reintroducing a woman’s sexuality to the fashion industry.

Tom Ford on Beyonce: Somehow, he even got Beyoncé Knowles to shimmy down the runway in a body-clinging, sparkle-laden gown. “Beyoncé in real life is actually quite quiet and very sweet,” Ford says, basking in the pitch-perfect lighting of his new swanky, expanded offices in London’s Victoria neighborhood. “But she can really turn it on.”

Following the Oscars, he thrust himself into designing the collection, using a mental list of about 30 women he would love to dress: “Women I find inspirational and who are archetypes,” Ford says. “My collection each season should have something that a woman in her 60s, who is still stylish and lived through the Charlie era, could wear, so Lauren Hutton gets that look. There’s something someone of Rachel Feinstein’s size should wear and something for someone who is extravagant and shops at a bunch of vintage stores, like Lisa Eisner, should wear.”

On “sexy”: “Do you want to know what I think is sexy or what the current state of sexy is?” he asks. What’s easier for him to describe is what he thinks is unsexy, yet prevalent, today: “Women have turned themselves into these bubble-butted, grapefruit-titted, bloated-mouthed cyberbitches. I’m just not into that.” Ford’s ideal is a softer beauty, a calmer sexy. “I think the 1970s will always be the decade for me. Obviously, I grew up in that era, but the beauty standard was touchable, kissable.”

On his new line, shot in Bazaar by Terry Richardson: To celebrate his return to fashion, Ford spent last fall collaborating on a series of fashion shoots, one with (the extremely heterosexual) photographer Terry Richardson, who just happens to share Ford’s affection for the sorts of ’70s wrap dresses that breasts may easily fall out of. “I did a shoot with Terry, and we were shooting a girl and a guy kissing in the sunset with a windmill in the background. Terry and I decided to do a kissing shot, so we kissed and kissed and kissed. And Terry is such a soft, sweet kisser. That’s what I think is sexy now.” Really? Soft kissing with Terry Richardson? “Soft kissing with anyone. There’s an anger to everything in our culture right now. And I’m sort of ready for a kind of sweetness and a softness to things.”

Tom Ford on porn: Lest we think Ford is losing his provocateur touch, however, he does offer, “I watch straight porn all the time. If I go on my computer, there’s a button that can connect me to all the sites I look at most often, and they’re all porn—and 1stdibs.com. Porn and antiques!”

Tom Ford is sober (and happy) now: “There was a mega cocktail culture through my whole career,” reminisces Ford, who used to roll out cocktail carts for his design staff at 5:00 P.M. and could put away four vodka tonics before his own fashion shows. “But I realized I wasn’t drinking to relax; I was drinking to escape. That’s why I saw a therapist, to see exactly what I was trying to escape from.” Their conclusion: “I was trying to escape from boring goddamned industry dinner parties, which I don’t go to anymore.” He’s back in the business, but he’s steering clear of the party circuit. He’s lost 12 pounds and can eat anything he wants. He says he couldn’t gain weight if he tried. “All that puffiness that you have from alcohol just went away, and my cheekbones popped back out, I guess,” he says with a smile. When I protest that he looks better than any sober 49-year-old I’ve ever met, he smiles again. “I really mean this: I’ve never been happier in my life. If anything, I have too many good things happening right now, and that’s wearing me out! And you look better when you’re happy.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

PORN AND ANTIQUES. Sweet Jesus. I would live forever with Tom Ford. Sure, we would fight, and yes, he would yell at me all the time, but he would also dress me and fuss over me and we would watch porn together and go antiquing. Then, on our way to some deserted antique shop, he would pull over and nuzzle my breasts and I would know all was right with the world.

Here’s the photo of Tom making out with Terry Richardson:

This man is so talented. If you guys are a fan – you must watch his movie “The Single Man.” It is a beautifully filmed movie with a really sweet and sad story. When I saw it, I had no idea it was directed by Ford – but when I realized it made sense because the movie just embraced beauty in a way only Ford can do.

don’t get me wrong, bubble butts IF NATURAL are good… if that’s what you like but now-society has gone “add water and mix”-bubble fake butt crazy and its not a good look on everyone.

The society/media takes something so natural and has made it into “The diaper butt craze”..

everything is fake and plastic surgeried up–is worshipped by society. THAT’S NOT cute. I don’t care whoooo’s wearing it.

So, Ms. Ford, why not design clothes for those of us who are NOT “bubble-butted, grapefruit-titted, bloated-mouthed cyberbitches”????? SOME of us CLASSIER WOMEN would love to wear clothing designed just for us. So ignore the aforementioned bimbos, and focus on us “real” women. I promise, we’ll make you look even better!!

  23. Uhyup says:

@Rachel- cause if we let women do it, there would no longer be a male embargo on what it means to sexy, and then not enough men would get enough boners! CLEARLY even a gay man is more suited to define female sexuality than a *woman*! Otherwise WHO WILL THINK OF THE BONERS???

  24. Jayna says:

@Cheyenne, I don’t think he’s talking boobs are bad. He’s specifically mentioning those big hard grapefruit-looking fake ones with the big fake lips, also. And the same with bubble-butted. LOL He just mentioned using Beyonce, who has curves there, that he loves. I think he’s talking about all the over-the-top plastic surgery for all these body parts that doesn’t even look soft.

Anywho, I do like the clothes. I love seeing that he has skipped all the things I hate about current women fashions. Belly shirts, low rider pants and big chunky platform shoes.

Gay man here. I always am attracted to my fabulous girl friends, but I don’t want to fuck them is all. Back in my club hopping days I would occasionally make out with some hot chick at the gay bar…still no interest in going further.

Gay men have dressed and defined women for all eternity. Do you think Cleopatra came up with that eye make-up without the help of a gay boy?? Please sister. Most of us love women, just accept our adoration graciously. We want you all to be fabulous!

Also, Tom, you are great but… if you are going to harp about ‘grapefruit titted women’ stop with the botox already. You are going to have to blink you lips soon because your forehead won’t move.

  27. bellaluna says:

@ Cheyenne – You obviously mistook my meaning. Allow me to clarify: I’m neither bubble-butted nor grapefruit-titted. I am a REAL woman with REAL curves. I am not surgically enhanced (despite much scrutiny for my God-given DD’s), and I refuse to be a bloated-mouthed cyberbitch.

I am EXACTLY the woman you are describing. I just don’t think designers should work EXCLUSIVELY for celebu-tards. Work for REAL women too, dammit! Aren’t we the ones who actually pay to wear your stuff?

I like how, in the same interview, he observes that “there’s an anger to everything in our culture right now”, and then proceeds to use some of the most angry, hateful words towards women that I’ve had the misfortune to read this week. It doesn’t matter that he was saying he doesn’t like that style of femininity; it was still grossly put and offensive. He is in favor of a womanly beauty that’s “touchable, kissable”, which is all about the pleasure somebody ELSE takes from the woman. In other words, be soft and unthreatening (shades of Hugh Heffner). And to top it off, he’s friendly with uber-creep Terry Richardson?

Would I want this man to dress me or “rediscover female sexuality” for me? Which he studies via pornography and, apparently, uninvited groping (which in most industries we’d call sexual assault)? Hmmmm…. PASS.

  34. Zelda says:

@uhyup–hilarious comment. Big love for it. But let me play devil’s advocate–it IS up to the people we want to have sex with to define what is sexy. And if we give most men some credit, I think we’d find that there is a large range of what straight men love in women (women in their LIVES not women they watch in porn–note the difference)

This is fair to the same degree that women largely define what is sexy for straight men. If we left that task solely up to them, the “sexiness” of paunchy guts, farting, and weekends spent playing video games would be all we had to choose from.

Tom is a great designer but I dont think a gay man is always the best indicator of what is sexy for women. He isnt attracted to women so his view of sexy is very different from the heterosexual male or even the female herself.

I think he is talented and like most of his clothes. Some of his clothes and ads show women in way to sexy poses etc. Poses no women would ever strike and that no heterosexual man would find sexy. Its more artistic than sexy.

Ford is a brilliant guy. And he will turn out to be a prominent director in the industry. His description is appropriate. Just like I like my guys perfume free, I like my women…simpler.

The Kardashians? These are the kind of women many men love, but you know what, these women aren’t real, they are just narcissistic versions of Barbie dolls, just another illusion. The men, most of them, are just like their mates, self-centered. To men like that, and vice-versa, women are simply objects, an aesthetic. Very sad.
