His position is no different than McCain's - they both feel gays should be allowed to enter into a legally binding contract of some sort, but neither of them supports gay marriage. The only candidate who supported full gay marriage rights was Kucinich. Obama supports something akin to civil unions, which while it's a step in the right direction, it's still an issue of separate but equal when in fact we should not be treated any differently. although, it may be an issue of electability within his platform. i doubt Obama would have the same chances at the presidency if he fully supported gay marriage. it's a sad truth about large sections of the American voting public that they would not vote for a candidate who supported gay marriage. after writing all of this up, it seems a little superfluous. so sorry for the slightly off-topic ramblings. :) czarina, you are correct.
