Pauly D is the first Jersey Shore tool to get a spinoff – was he the cheapest?

I’ve only seen about two episodes of Jersey Shore and will be the first to admit that I don’t get it. No judgment though, I could easily be convinced to watch this show if a friend mixed up some cocktails and sat down with me to mock it. I do follow these drunken kids in the celebrity press, and am surprised to hear that of all the tools Pauly D is the one who scored a spinoff show. You would expect that one of the more popular castmembers would be headlining their own show – like Snooki, The Situation, J-Woww or even a show about Sammi and Ronnie’s relationship. Instead, it’s Pauly D, and US Weekly reports that everyone except Sammi, Ronnie and Vinny were also negotiating with MTV for their own show. My theory is that Pauly D was the cheapest and most accommodating. Here’s US Weekly’s report:

The 30-year-old Jersey Shore star has been named the first cast member to land his own MTV series, beating out costars Snooki, The Situation and JWoww (who were all in spinoff negotiations).

“At the heart of Jersey Shore is the unique and genuine cast and Pauly D. truly embodies both qualities,” Chris Linn, Executive Vice President of Programming and Head of Production for MTV, tells UsMagazine.com in a statement.

DJ Pauly D (real name: Paul Delvecchio) recently closed the series option deal after filming a pilot with 495 Productions in September.

“He’s distinguished himself onscreen as the fun-loving, well-coiffed and dependable guy you can’t help but want to hang out with,” Linn says of the reality star. “We know viewers are curious about his life away from the shore and we look forward to exploring new possibilities around that.”

Before his spinoff hits the air, Delvecchio will appear alongside Snooki and the gang when Season 3 of Jersey Shore premieres January 3 on MTV.

[From US Weekly]

I think that MTV assumes that no matter who they center a spinoff around, it will be popular. They may see these kids as interchangeable anyway, and might as well go with the one who is the cheapest with the lowest sense of entitlement. I’m reminded of a comment that a Jersey Shore producer Sally Ann Salsano made to the NY Times over the summer. Of the castmembers getting big heads, she said “Here’s what I always say: I won’t stand for it. They all live in their mom’s basement and I know it. Last season I had to buy them cigarettes and Diet Cokes. They’re the same kids they’ve always been. Sure, they have a bit more money. They have more clothes with rhinestones on them than they did last year.”

Radar has details of Pauly D’s spinoff, and it will supposedly focus on “his life as a DJ on the road with his buddies.” They’ve already shot a bunch of footage, according to Radar. The show will have the ridiculous name of “Pauly’s World.” That’s too funny and makes me think of Wally World, which was probably the intention.

Mild spoilers for Jersey Shore Season 3 (as seen in trailer)
The new season of Jersey Shore is coming out in January, and features a new orange pint-sized friend of Snooki’s named Deena. In the trailer (below) Deena strips for The Situation, Ronnie (?) takes a tumble while trying to pole dance (that made me laugh) and also gets a proctology exam, J-Woww breaks up with her boyfriend, Sammi and J-Woww get in a punching match, and Snooki gets arrested. (We know all about that.) I definitely could be convinced to watch this.

I don’t get the hairgel, the jewelry and the shaped eyebrow. I’m from Brazil, so maybe our concept of beauty is different. I don’t think it is, but this Pauly guy actually gets laid, so I gotta ask my girls here, is this attractive? If yes, HOW is this attractive?

And remind me again, why do we give this people any attention?

EDIT: I said that before I saw the last photo. Yeaa… I think I prefer the hairgel.

i think it’s more because of his DJ lifestyle. He actually has a standing gig at the Palms in Vegas, I think. Other than him, who has an actual “exciting” profession related to entertainment outside of the show? no one.

@Gabriela: NO, Pauly and the Jersey Twits are a small microcosm of American attractiveness. Specifically, what I always think of as “the guido effect”. One of the best breakdowns is here: http://www.gothamcityinsider.com/2008/01/evolution-of-guido.html

It’s kind of like hipsters and punks; you don’t understand the subculture, unless you’re in the subculture.

And I agree with you on the hair gel sentiment.

    EDIT:
Remember when TV programming was inventive and fresh? Before the Rise of Reality? When there were so many sitcoms you could interchange them? I miss those.

    @K

Hahaha I had no idea they had a name for it. I’d go for greasy or repulsive, but I think ‘guido’ is fine.

    “fun-loving, well-coiffed and dependable guy…”

How dependable can you be if your hair ranks above a character attribute?

I am from Long Island, and while I am not Italian, you cant help but know exactly what this subculture is growing up around here.

They are who they are, and I love to watch it, because it is something I am familiar with, and have known people like this my whole life! It is not my style, but I cant help have a soft spot for them!

@Gabriela: As an Italian girl, I’m embarassed of this bunch of idiots who thinks to be “true” Italians. Bleah.
However, even here in Italy there’s a style which has some similarities with Guidos, especially over the beach during summer or in discos, who has gained some notoriety thanks to TV programs like “Uomini e donne”. We call them “Tamarri”.

Gabriela – NO. These people have styles that are exaggerated and stuck in the 80s – they’re very weird.

They are actually funny kids who love to party and have a good time. Is it over the top? Of course, but I admit I’ve watched both seasons and will probably watch the third. Pauly and Vinnie are my two favs on the show and I would watch the spin off.

    gabriela-
because everyone from brasil is beautiful and has amazing style and taste in men?

anyway, i didnt know he was 30 but i think he is hot. plus, they are just an exaggeration of many young, single, fun loving people :) HILARIOUS show.

  15. Kim says:

He is my favorite only because he doesnt sleep with anything on 2 legs, doesnt think he is Gods gift to the world and seems to be an pretty nice, down to earth guy with decent morals. He was the only 1 in the house no one had a problem with because he is no drama.

Jersey Shore and its cast are harmless. Typical Jersey kids who are young & like to go out (like most kids in there 20′s do). None of them seem vile or like total ego maniacs. Even the situation who does have an ego is still harmless and a decent guy.

    @elina
That’s not what I meant. I meant that due to the cultural difference, maybe brazilian girls have different taste in men than american girls. Not better, nor worse, just different.

But I’m glad this guido style isn’t attractive in the US either.

“Well-coiffed”? “Dependable”? How the eff do they say/write these things with a straight face??

Oh wait, they are making millions, so its probably pretty easy…

He needs a good haircut. Maybe the producers of his reality show will work in a visit to a salon for a new do. I think he could be hot.

Dear Producers, nearly everyone I know has at one time or other gone through some Major Hair Drama, so the situation would be easily relatable to a wide audience. You can have a great build up with Pauly seeking the advice of his castmates and their reactions later, among tons of other promising situations. Episodes of fun

Pauly and Vinny are both really nice guys, you can tell the fame hasn’t gotten to their heads.

It looks like Sammi totally loses it this season, not exactly surprising.

  21. Louise says:

Sammi, Ronnie, and Vinny would be the cheapest not Pauly. I always forget about them because they are never in gossip blogs. I’m sure Snooki, The Situation, and J-Woww are a little more expensive but not much more.

  22. Ashley says:

Of all the characters on the show he is the least ego fueled and he seems nicer, more diplomatic and down to earth than the rest.

Mike deserves to crawl back into the hole he came from. He’s extremely ugly, misogynistic, egotistical, and plays it up for the cameras 24/7. He’s also the one to talk the most about others and repeat it and then watch the fighting begin (althouh that may be a good thing for MTV).

Jenni and Snooki are actually pretty boring. When they’re hanging out together there isn’t much drama, and it’s mostly them talking about the other castmates, or doing silly stuff (basically what all girlfriends do). Maybe MTV could have done a show about them moving in together in NYC or something but it wouldn’t be them in a natural situation, and them by themselves would be even more boring. I’m sure Jenni would be natural but Snooki, like Mike, plays up for the cameras. None of it would be believable.

Mike the Situation is not harmless. He’s a blight on civilization. The way he treats women and his ego make him about as appealing as the stomach flu.
