Elisabetta Canalis and George Clooney have been together a year and a half. That’s a long time (for Clooney), and it’s much longer than I had in my own private betting pool (me and my dog). Throughout their year-and-a-half relationship, there have been various tabloid stories about how Canalis had “tamed” Clooney, and how this was finally the girl who would get Clooney down the aisle. You’ve just got to roll your eyes, because they said that about all of Clooney’s other girls too. It’s a national pastime, theorizing how long Clooney’s latest escort/girlfriend will last. Personally, I think Canalis has lasted this long because she’s one clever hooker. Of course, I also think she must have accumulated some really disgusting and embarrassing dirt on Clooney that she’s blackmailing him with. Just a theory!
Anyway, this In Touch Weekly story is most definitely crap, but it amused me to no end:

This is just another fantastical press release sent by Canalis’s publicist. In Touch Weekly was just the only tabloid that published it, and they probably died laughing when they made that decision. Last February or so there was a similar fantastical press release that the National Enquirer published claiming that Canalis was actually pregnant, and we see how true that one turned out. Then there was the press release that Clooney was buying her an island, and she had “ordered” him to sell his house in Como, LOL. It’s all b.s. nonsense. Canalis and her publicist are playing this publicity contract for all its worth. Now that the Leverage season finale and Canalis’s crap Italian Christmas movie have gotten some publicity, methinks the contract is over. I do love your observations, Kaiser, truly funny stuff!

One.
He is too selfish to put time into a real emotional relationship with a woman, when it comes to relationships he is emotionally immature and because he is scared of really committing or losing control he uses money and a contract to keep the upper hand .

He is also bisexual and likes it that way. She is a front and distraction for the world media, to make him still look like the sexiest man of the year/ hot bachelor, in his own mind at least, he is so wrapped up in the image he has created for the public he hasn’t noticed that the fans aren’t buying it anymore. He still believes he can charm/con the fans/fools.
Three.
There is nothing like a romance/sex to keep a movie stars name and picture in front of the public on a daily basis, the public have short memories and insatiable appetites for new information on their favourite stars , they need to be fed regularly to keep them happy, ergo the sexy Italian arm candy.
George is not looking that hot now and lately his motor bike pictures make him look more like a grandpa than a cool Steve McQueen type. He needs something interesting for the fans to look at, discuss and snipe at, it takes the heat off his own ageing looks.
Four.
He has been openly called gay in the press over the past 2yrs, especially in Europe, something that had not happened before, his revolving girlfriend door with the 1year sign was and is still being ridiculed in the press, he figured he needed something to last a bit longer this time to make him look less shallow in the romance department. His roles have changed recently to reflect a less flippant image and so has the public-private life. Unfortunately he seems to like the trashy types and there is the advantage of him feeling no guilt when he dumps them because they know the score.
Five.
Finally and most importantly, the contract also spells out in a legal agreement that she has to keep her mouth shut about their relationship so he is completely protected from any scandalous revelations that my impact on his career or public image.
These people are in show biz and it’s a standard show biz contract, just like her signing a movie contract, she is playing a part. Odd that she is so awful on screen but is really much better at the off screen role than he is.
There is certainly sex involved here, but the just for fun kind no strings attached and they both know it. She is right into his particular quirks so it suits them both fine. Look at it as an on the set movie romance, it’s just that this movie is filming for 2 plus years.
Someone asked if there was an ‘out clause’ in the contract, Yes at anytime either may end the contract. If Eli ends it she walks away with what she has, if George ends he will pay out the remainder of the contract. I expect it will last a bit longer than 2years, George has The Descendents and the new Ides Of March movie to be released in 2011, both are likely to generate Oscar buzz, if the nominations roll in Eli will be there for the awards season in early 2012, its too late in the game to break in a new woman, an official engagement would add some extra PR but no marriage, George will never marry again he is smart enough to know one divorce is enough.

Clooney stupidly signed a publicity contract with her because he had a bunch of movies come out last year, and he thought a PR girlfriend might help him sell tickets and win awards. Canalis has a trashy publicity team, which cut a deal with at least one blog to provide said blog with scoops in exchange for said blog discouraging and/or deleting any negative comments about Canalis. The trashy publicity team also set out on a campaign of insulting Clooney on various blogs, variously implying or stating that he is into kinky sex, is bisexual, is gay, doesn’t like women, etc. The reason Canalis’s publicity team did this was in the hopes that Clooney would be scared enough to extend Canalis’s contract, thinking it would somehow put the ugly rumors to rest when in fact it has only fueled those rumors. Also, Canalis is far worse than a hooker, and she and her associates have done some really awful things which have yet to be revealed.
Clooney does not have sex with this particular escort because that would complicate their business agreement. Clooney is a very smart man. This isn’t the first time he’s done one of these contracts. I know Canalis is desperate to make people think Clooney is into her, but it’s just not true. She’s nothing more important than a maid or chauffeur where Clooney is concerned.

Clooney did every single press conference for his movies as well as stopping to do press interviews on red carpets. Red carpet appearances they did together include Venice, London, Rome, L.A., Golden Globes, Oscars, as well as some other smaller events. Clooney and Canalis did literally dozens of photo ops which were obviously staged, with a pap even being invited to places normally closed to them such as movie sets and a private wedding party.

Elisabetta walked every red carpet with Clooney because she’s his girlfriend. It’s customary to bring wives and girlfriends with you on the red carpet. It is not a position reserved solely for PR escorts.
Canalis is lousy PR for George. Your PR escort theory fails right there. But if she’s his girlfriend, it makes perfect sense he would bring her. Under those circumstances the “PR” is irrelevant. She’s there because she’s his girlfriend so of course he wants her there. Just like anyone else who brings their significant other.
Clooney has enough clout and influence in this industry now that he doesn’t have to worry if the public likes his girlfriend or not. Nor should he. If he likes her, he has every right to bring her. Clooney is established enough in his career at this point that the public will see his films whether or not they think his girlfriend is up to snuff.
Clooney kept Krista Allen off the red carpet because he feared it would affect his career. He wasn’t established enough yet. Canalis is, in many ways, an Italian Krista Allen. The women are very similar. But he’s able to be more open about his relationship with Canalis because his career is so much more solid now. He doesn’t have to worry about whether we like his g/f’s anymore.
@Tuscan Sun, most of the American press did not cover the truth about Canalis until after awards season was over. They still don’t cover much of it and mostly just print lightly edited versions of her publicist’s press releases. While Canalis had a bad reputation in Italy, the news of her cocaine scandal did not break until last summer. And the contract was already signed before any of this happened. Canalis is bad PR, but obviously Clooney did not foresee that going in or he would never have signed the contract. Once he signed the contract, he felt it had to wait it out. If he “broke up” with her at the one year mark, people would say it was a one year contract or that he wasn’t sticking by his “girlfriend” after her cocaine scandal. It’s easy to be an armchair coach in the fourth quarter. The fact is that this was all for PR, and the negative information did not start to leak out until after the ink had dried on the contract.
