Kathy Hilton reaches a year of sobriety

Kathy Hilton claims she’s reached a year of sobriety – and that she’s done it for absolutely no other reason than to set a good example for her drunk driving offspring. Kathy’s friends are absolutely adamant that she doesn’t have a drinking problem. She just gave up booze completely for the heck of it.

Following a tough period of time for the Hilton family, mom Kathy recently celebrated a milestone: one year of sobriety. Because two of her four children have been arrested for drinking and driving, Kathy decided to give up alcohol altogether.

“She wanted to set a good example for her family,” says a pal of the 49-year-old, adding that although Kathy didn’t have a drinking problem, “she wanted to walk the walk.” The former actress had already given up her occasional cocktails when her 18-year-old son, Barron, was arrested on a DUI charge in February.

Now, with her brood back on track, Kathy is tackling another bad habit — smoking. “She doesn’t smoke in front of me!” Paris tells In Touch. After Barron was arrested, Kathy hired a family therapist to help them through the ordeal together.

I’d say that if that’s true, Hilton should cut back and show her kids responsible drinking, and the value of temperance. I don’t think a single one of Kathy Hilton’s spawn knows a thing about moderation. But quitting entirely sends the message that it’s all or nothing. And if I know anything about Paris Hilton, I’m guessing she’s going to choose all.

I myself am a near teetotaler for no reason other than it takes me massive, massive quantities of alcohol to get a buzz, but just a sip to get a hangover. Thus the cost is rarely worth the benefit. So I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with a non-alcoholic deciding to give up booze entirely. It’s not like you need a reason. But somehow the idea that the only way Kathy Hilton thought she could get her kids to not drink so much was to quit entirely – I just don’t buy it. I’m guessing someone saw her leave an AA meeting or something, and she worried she’d be exposed, so she’s trying to control the story. Or maybe Kathy Hilton is trying to teach values for the first time. A little late, but whatever.

Ugh. You’re a smoker, Kathy? SO low class.
    Tra-shaay!”
(said in East coast blue blood lockjaw voice over)

  2. Silly Lilly says:

I have to disagree with you on this one Jay Bird. Her children have a problem with alcohol. So the effort to establish a fun social full life is a very intelligent decision. Same as the entire family removing fatty foods if one member is obese. I think what you are saying has a point, but I think there is a grander picture that was not looked at.

  3. cc says:

She could have done this BEFORE all the dui crap. You know, to set a good example.

  4. Lauri says:

If I were related to Paris Hilton, I imagine I would drink. Heavily.

  5. lulu says:

so what are we supposed to do — applaud what a great mother she is? please!!

  6. ri23 says:

A whole year? Wow, Kathy, I think this calls for a drink or 20.

  7. Rio says:

…Four children? Holy crap, I only just learned of the existence of Barron Hilton, who the heck’s the FOURTH kid?!?

  8. cc says:

Rio, I guess they are hiding…afraid to be associated with the lot.

    *lol*

Oh, wait…Conrad. That’s the fourth spawn. /cheer for wiki

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever read. Instead of showing moderation or demonstrating sensible drinking practices, she gives up drinking entirely in order to set some bizarre example. Booze abuse is the problem, you fool of a woman, not booze itself.

No wonder Paris and her brother are so f*king dumb if this is what passes for an example in their house.

And the term sobriety (derived from ‘sober’) in In Touch’s story is incorrect in this context or,, alternatively, entirely accurate. Only ever really used in recovery. It should be tee-total. Unless of course we are actually talking about a woman in recovery? I think your take on this is more likely, JB.

  10. Kelly says:

    I totally agree JayBird.

  11. Other Karen says:

She’s trying, at least. And her kids know she’s really worried about their drinking.

  12. Other Karen says:

Kathy has some pretty snazzy shoes on.

  13. Codzilla says:

Her kids don’t know anything. That’s the problem.

  14. Frenchie says:

Congratulate me because I am reaching my 9th month of sobriety, for the sake of my kid … unborn till tuesday. Maybe her action would have made a difference if the kids were still leaving with her, dah ! I get why young people are drinking, I did it too, but I don’t get why with all the freaking money they have they can’t get a cab or a personal driver for a night ???

  15. Callie says:

    Frenchie;

Well said. This over-reacting is a little suspicious and too much, too late. We taught our son to never drink and drive – ever! We knew that when he went away to collge, that he would, in all likelihood, be at parties where drinking was present. To his credit, he and his friends always had a designated driver or sought other means of transportaton. His university also had small on-campus buses to drive students who were drinking; our son worked, part-time, as one of their designated student drivers.

    Congratulations on your baby, btw!

“I myself am a near teetotaler for no reason other than it takes me massive, massive quantities of alcohol to get a buzz, but just a sip to get a hangover. ”

Me, too, JB. It’s unfortunate to some extent, but ultimately not much of a trade-off. But then, I’m not a Hilton. Heavy is the liver that bears the Crown Royal.

  17. Amy says:

Look at that photo on the bottom of her between the two girls. She obviously should have given up alcohol during those two pregnancies. Ack! 😯

Paris has a beak and wonky eye and Nicki looks like Marilyn Manson sans make up. It’s either fetal alcohol effects or inbreeding amongst the blue bloods. 😉

  18. MISSY says:

    Don’t care about rich addicts.

  19. AP says:

The whole family sucks. Why am I here reading another Paris Hilton post?????! Why did I click this???!

  20. paris herpes says:

She should set another example and get stupid Nicky to eat dammit. Even Paris is looking fat compared to her, which is weird. Nicky was always the ugly and fat one.

  21. Scout says:

why are they even in the news? what a waste. stupid me for even knowing about these bimbo sluts.

  22. Scorn says:

That explains why she foisted her children on us, more specifically Paris, she was in a drunken stupor the whole time so of course she thought it was a fabulous idea. It also explains why they didn’t catch early on that Paris was devoid of morals and is a moron and actually needed to be hidden from the world at large due to the fact that she sucks the soul out of any room that she enters. Thanks a lot Kathy, it’s too late now.

  23. saintdevil says:

Kathy Hilton, Lynne Spears and Dina Lohan should form a club where they can celebrate their achievements as mothers.

  24. Because I say So says:

The reason Nicky looks so different from her mom and Parasite is because she’s had less plastic surgery than the other two. I heard a rumor that Wonky’s eye became wonky after a bad nose-job (to mirror her mother’s beak) which can’t ever be fixed. Is it wrong of me to enjoy typing those words?

  25. Jeff Steptoe says:

I am so sick of these folks who spew all this judgmental bushwa!!! You don’t have to like these people(The Hiltons), and no one is asking you to. But pahhlease!!! I think it is great, for Mrs. Hilton to quit drinking, even she does not have a “problem”, at least she is doing something positive!!! Please quit picking on Paris, as well. You know what the Good Book says about judging, at least she never intentionally inflicted physical harm any person, or any other creature!!!
