Anderson Cooper starts a feud with the Lohans

Anderson Cooper is one of those journalists I’ve always really respected/had a crush on. For a very long time he refused to disclose his position on most issues, maintaining that old journalistic credo that his job was to remain impartial. He got a little more emotional after the Hurricane Katrina coverage, but his ratings improved and people seemed to like it when he let lose a little.

Anderson’s been a regular substitute for Regis Philbin on Live with Regis and Kelly! for years. The show obviously has a more relaxed format that CNN, and at one point during yesterday’s show Anderson went on a little diatribe about how Ali Lohan looks old. Which, to be fair, she does. People have been saying that about her for a long time. It’s something about her features and her cheekbones. Ali actually looks younger now than she did two years ago – I’m assuming with the help of some stylists and makeup artists.

Anderson talks about the show, constantly using the word “horrific,” to describe not just the program, but also specifying that the Lohans are “horrific people,” over and over again. Then he starts talking about Ali, noting, “…and there’s this perfectly nice, seemingly, allegedly 14-year-old girl – looks about sixty – [audience laughter] – no I say that with concern and love.”

For someone usually so reserved on his own program, he really goes off on the Lohans. And it’s damn funny. According to Anderson, “Denise Richards Colon It’s Complicated” is an absolute entertainment gem compared to Living Lohan. When Kelly tries to pacify Anderson and tone down what he just said with a comment about how “They’re obviously a multi-talented family… the kids sing, and they perform, and they’ve been in the…” he just folds his arms and shrugs, noting flatly, “Maybe that was in the episode I didn’t see.”

Dina of course had a classic, well-thought-out angry rebuttal issued to OK! Magazine.

“People are just cruel!” she said. “This is bad karma for him.”

[From OK! Magazine]

Dina, the fact that Anderson Cooper even knows who you are (and does a wicked impression of her, by the way) is the absolute highlight of your “career.” Be grateful.

YEY Anderson! Is there anyone who doesn’t agree with him!? This makes me love him more

  2. geronimo says:

Yeah but if he’s so good/intelligent/rated etc, why is he wasting his time slagging off and giving additional, unwarranted publicity to talentless nonentities like this family? Dina L, being the media whore that she is, will respond and it’ll turn into a ‘he said, she said’ bore fest.

Why not just ignore them? Something a bit dodgy anyway about a grown, so-called professional journalist calling out a 14-year old girl. Thinking it is one thing, saying it publicly smacks of the same thing he’s accusing the Lohans of – attention-seeking.

Underneath that clean crisp suit lies the heart of a mean old queen! LOL I love it. he tries to maintain journalistic integrity and impartiality but he can’t fight his inner queenie cattiness! MEOW Andy. Saucer of milk?

    Love me some Coop!

  5. Roma says:

This from the man who walks around NYC in Abercrombie and looks like a misplaced 17 year old! Granted, it is cute and his bf is quite younger. Just seems like Ali wants to be older and Cooper wants to be younger… seems like no one is ever happy with who they are.

    Go Coop !!

He probably got his fashion sense from his mama Gloria Vanderbilt.

I’m sure Dina’s warning of bad karma is keeping him up nights. I think it’s funny, wish I’d caught that episode.

I f*ing love Anderson Cooper. He just reeks of class, style and downright sexiness. I’m not a big fan of him making fun of Ali Lohan, after all… at the end of the day, she is a child. We can’t punish her for the atrocities that she has for parents. I feel bad for her. But he sure is sexy…. and this is coming from a gay woman. I wouldn’t sleep with him, but I think he is HOTTTTTT!!!! and just because I’m a lesbian, doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate a hot man.lol.

  10. Kaiser says:

I like it. A newsman with an interest/hobby in dissecting celebutainment culture. Well done.

  11. Roma says:

@NicoleB, that’s pretty funny. You don’t often hear a lesbian having the hots for a gay guy!

  12. Missy says:

    Yeah Anderson,ha-ha, Love it

Reporting what his media bosses tell him to report while maintaining a squinty poker face does not equal “objectivity.” Because the selection process — what news to report and how to report it — is in itself subjective. It’s what I call “Soft Big Brother.” You don’t have to lie; you just have to not tell the truth.

As for the Lohans, Lindsay, who is the famous one and hub around which all other Lohans revolve, DOES sing and act. If Debbie Harry, Madonna or Linda Ronstadt, while not being operatic sopranos, can be said to have the ability to sell a song, Lindsay also has that ability. As for her acting skill in both comedy and drama, that is beyond question. Lindsay Lohan has more talent and most importantly SPIRIT in her little finger than that robotic fruit Anderson Cooper. Although he may have the edge on Ali or Dina.

I’m not so concerned that he’s making fun of a child. The child is representing herself as older than she is (or her parents are, anyway) and if you’re going to play in the NFL, you have to put up with the tackles. It’s not like she is some shy shrinking violet who needs protection, she’s out front and vulnerable. Parents’ fault, but still true.

I’m not really saying this well. I’m trying to say that the protection ended when the parents shoved her into the spotlight. The Lohans are so ridiculous, and such publicity whores, they deserve whatever he threw at them.

  17. geronimo says:

Syko, just a difference of opinion here, she’s still 14 and he’s a 40-something (50-something?) supposedly grown-up, respected journalist. Dina and the rest of them, sure, but a 14 year old, who is the way she is because of her f*king awful parents, is not really fair game. Call it by all means but at the source, not at the sad little end product that is Ali. By bringing her into it, he just came across as a bit pathetic.

  18. kate says:

usually i love coop, but i have to agree that publicly attacking a 14 year old girl’s looks is beyond bitchy cattiness, its just mean. anyone remember when clinton was first elected and rush limbaugh made fun of 12 year old chelsea? mmmm-hmmmm.

  19. Syko says:

Oh, absolutely all the parents’ fault. Lindsay is also the way she is because of the f*king awful parents. But this kid wants celebrity and fame and all that goes with it, and having people make fun of you goes with it. She probably should be protected, but the parents aren’t going to do it. And chances are that Ali doesn’t really know what she wants in life yet (I sure didn’t at 14, and am not even really sure at my age now) and the parents are pushing her toward it and hyping it to her. She is to be pitied. But still I believe that if she’s out there, she’s fair game.

i don’t think coop saw it as attacking a 14 year old child, but as attacking the whole system that’s turned her into an old before her time, sort-of-celeb. if she’d been there he probably would have scrubbed the excessive make-up off, like a kindly old uncle, and told her to go be age appropriate, and patted her on the head. and then shook his finger at dina and told her to stop trying to make herself look younger by making her baby daughter look old. what kind of freak mother does that???
