Globes fashion: Catherine Zeta-Jones and the “bitches in green” trend

fp_6550022_goldenglobes_set2_rij_56_103

Greens and green-blues were a huge trend last night, which surprised me. Usually, the “trend” of the evening is something horrible, like garish red lipstick, or barely-there beige. But several high-profile nominees and fashion girls were wearing gorgeous shades of green, and it was like my personal Christmas. I love a bitch in a jewel tone. Catherine Zeta Jones up there wore one of the most memorable of the green dresses. I think it’s Versace…? I’m pretty sure. It reminds me so, so much of Gone With the Wind, specifically the part where Scarlett gets Mamie to make her the dress out of the drapes. Right? That was totally CZJ’s inspiration.

Next up: Mila Kunis in Vera Wang. It was custom-built for Mila after she approved a sketch from Vera Wang. The house made Mila’s gown in four days. I have to say, this wasn’t my favorite on Mila. The girl can wear anything, and this seems so very fussy on such a young actress. But I did like the one-shoulder aspect, and I loved that Mila wore a bright jewel tone.

Did you know that Mila played the young Angelina Jolie in the HBO movie Gia? True story. And Angelina and Mila both chose the same shade of emerald green. I’m surprised Angelina ended up in such a big trend – usually, Angelina marches to the beat of her own hideous, glittery-sack-wearing drummer, fashion-wise.

Elisabeth Moss in Donna Karan… I have to admit, I loved this look on Elisabeth. The hair was funky (although I love the shade of blonde), but the dress was simple and well-cut and the whole effect was lovely.

Okay, so maybe Amy Adams wasn’t wearing emerald green, but her blue-green dress was still on trend, in my opinion. Plus, she had that funky shoulder piece that was also part of a disturbing trend. I know Amy is my mother’s pretty princess Cinderella and everything, but Cinderella needs to do something different with her hair. I will give Amy bonus points for being such a good sport every time she loses to her Fighter costar Melissa Leo, though. So, to review: blue-green, bad hair, funky shoulder piece, but Cinderella is a classy bitch, so it’s all good.

You put Amy Adams in double, her photo is there instead of CZJ’s

  2. DD says:

She looked amazing yesterday and Michael still handsome. Mila Kunis wow she looked gorgeous and I loved her dress. I guess green is this season’s colour.

  3. KimmyZ says:

    Where’s the Zeta pic ?

    EDIT : Nevermind

  4. Kaiser says:

Sorry, I fixed it, my bad.

  5. Sara says:

I LOVE the green color trend! Everyone looks gorgeous in their dresses, except AJ, that dress is super fug! The shoulders and cut, not flattering and it looks like something off of Dynasty!

  6. brin says:

Out of all the green dresses I love Elizabth Moss’s gown the best. She looked gorgeous…eat your heart out, Fred Armistad(?)!

  7. Maria says:

Angies dress makes me think of the little mermaid

  8. Becky R says:

    CZJ looks gorgeous.

  9. sammie323 says:

In the pic of Mila Kunis, the lady behind her in the red & black shoes is stepping on her train.

  10. Maritza says:

The dresses are beautiful except for Angelina’s, it looks so matronly.

  11. Aria says:

I can’t help loving CZJ. I don’t care if she smokes or swears like a truckdriver. She’s drop dead gorgeous. I totally get the GWTW vibe but it’s fine because she would have made a perfect Vivien Leigh.

  12. VIktoryGin says:

The 80s will slice a bitch for jacking its clothes, Angie.

I love green. Glad to see more celebs exploiting that color.

  13. lulu says:

I dont care for the emerald green look.

Too Gone with the wind/ Dynasty!

I have to say, “Angie, shoulder pads are never, ever a good idea.”

  14. KJ says:

CZJ I believe is in Monique Lhuillier (I thought that’s what she said). Beautiful dress, beautiful color for her skin, and as always, beautiful woman.

  15. Chicoulina says:

I Loved all 4 dresses.Mila Kunis is too short and tiny for that kind of dress.I wish Angelina would’ve worn it.
    Catherine’s dress is amazing!!
Angelina’s dress would look good only on her!I loved it!

  16. fabgrrl says:

I would totally switch teams for CZJ!

  17. Jezi says:

Am I the only one who thinks CZJs dress looks like she’s wearing asphalt green. Like she pulled it off of a baseball field and made a dress. Angie’s dress is nice but she’s lost her sex appeal. Milan could wear a bathrobe and still look amazing. That girl is gorgeous!

  18. samihami says:

    I like both CZJ’s dress and Mila’s.

  19. bros says:

kunis was my fave. that is gorgeous! CZJ looks like she is wearing my sponge or some tree moss or something. i hate the texture.

  20. December says:

Catherine Zeta-Jones looks beautiful here. The dress would probably look horrible on anyone else, but she manages to pull it off.

I always thought Mila Kunis looked more like Angelina Jolie than Megan “Plastic” Fox ever did. She looks cute as usual.

Angie’s dress is just a no. There’s nothing really uniquely special about it, and looks like a dress you’d find in a thrift store.

    Elizabeth Moss looked stunning.

  21. MsCatra says:

I like Angelina’s dress. It feels like old Hollywood glamour to me. It’s very 40’s. Agree that probably only she could pull it off!

  22. Hautie says:

These were all nice dresses. The only issue I see with Angie’s is the sleeve could have been a couple inches longer.

Just a little drape over the the back of her hand. They just look a little too short. And made her hands look too big for her body.

I am just happen to see that these dressed look in season. Not a bunch of Easter dresses in January. 🙂

  23. Megan says:

It’s a Monique Lhuillier Pre-Fall 2011 gown on Catherine Zeta-Jones (my favorite of the night!).

  24. Alaska says:

I really adore that shade of green! Such a great color for brunettes… way more appealing than all the blondes in boring neutral shades.

  25. Isabel says:

All so beautiful…except Angie. What in Dynasty hell?

Oh, and I just don’t understand Elizabeth Moss. Don’t get the appeal at all.

  26. KJ says:

December: Side note since you mentioned Kunis and Jolie – Mila Kunis played the child version of Gia in Angelina Jolie’s HBO move Gia. They do have very similar features.

EDIT: Just realized Kaiser MENTIONED this in her post. God, I’m a space cadet today. Reading is fundamental.

  27. gaugustaus says:

Being a brunette myself I love wearing royal jewel tones. They look great & I like this trend.

CJZ was my favorite, so pretty.

  28. KLO says:

Elizabeth Moss’ dress was the best in my opinion, of all the green ones. Angelina looks like a christmas skeleton. The dress is just really bad. She would have looked gorgeous in any of the other dresses here.

  29. Megan says:

Anne Hathaway and Angie Jolie appear to be wearing the same dress in different colors.

  30. original kate says:

love them all except angie’s. too “mother of the bride.”

  31. skibunny says:

They all look gorgeous except AJ. No hotness there!

  32. sapphire says:

My favorite color and the right people were wearing it. If your skin tone is wrong, you look like cheese.

  33. Az says:

No one does old school glamour better than CZJ. On anyone else that dress would have been too Scarlett’s drapes. On her? Perfection. As for Angelina Jollie, I question her stylist’s taste level. Although I think maybe she isn’t using a stylist anymore because the last time she looked good was that strapless black dress with the emerald earrings at the Oscars and I know she definitely used a stylist then. In that case, Angelina’s taste level is questionable.

  34. Twez says:

As Angie’s glittery sacks go, I liked this one. It was nipped in at the waist to give a bit of shape and the proportions weren’t bad. I just don’t know why she insists on wearing dresses that Ellen Burstyn would feel comfortable wearing.

That has to be one of the best award show looks I’ve seen Elisabeth Moss wear, but this isn’t the first time I’ve seen her creased. I know it’s hard to avoid with a heavy smooth satin, but enough already.

  35. Raven says:

These dresses are lovely and the colors are great for this time of year–none of the spring very light colors that looked so weird at some other award events. CZJ looks classically English in this and the most attractive, IMO.

  36. flutters says:

CZJ and Elizabeth Moss killed it last night! Beautiful color and shape to their dresses. I like Amy Adams’s dress too. Something about Mila’s look didn’t land for me. I don’t really like the color of her dress.

  37. Kim says:

Catherine, Amy Adams and alot of them with that red or reddish darker hair wear green alot to these events. I am one who doesnt like this look at all. Its a safe go to.

Mila is gorgeous but this color does nothing for her.

Dont know who Elizabeth is but she needs to put some makeup on. It looks silly when a woman is dressed to the nines but doesnt weasr more makeup to go with dress code.

I like this color on Angelina but the dress is sort of old ladyish. Not terrible but not great.

  38. Lindsay says:

It kind of sucks for Amy Adams that she gave three great performances and then was upstaged by the other actress in the film three years in a row. Granted the other actress was Meryl Streep.

    I love Caterine’s dress.

  39. Tomas says:

they are all fab except jolie…think she borrowed that from betty white’s closet. it looks dated and matronly.

  40. lucy2 says:

I love the green! EM’s dress was my favorite (agree she needed more makeup), but liked Mila’s overall look best, gorgeous! It looked a bit darker on TV though. I liked CZJ’s but the texture is a bit much for me. Love the color & shape on her, that’s the best I’ve seen her look in ages. Amy looks great too.
Nice to see Angelina in a bright color, but it does look like something Blanche would have worn to the Rusty Anchor. Weird that Anne Hathaway in a similar dress, different color looked modern and edgy, and Angie looked like she strolled off the set of Dynasty.

  41. Solveig says:

I love those shades of green! I would always dress in green (I actually always dress in green…).
Mila’s gown is so so beautiful it makes me sad I will never get the chance to wear something like that.

  42. Camille says:

    They all look gorgeous.

And I think AJ looked very sexy and as gorgeous as ever. One of her best looks in a while I think. Only AJ could have gotten away with that dress IMO.

  43. JenJen says:

Mrs. Douglas’ dress was over-the top, princess. She didn’t need to scream ‘look at me’,or maybe she did because he was getting all the attention? Any-hoo I wonder how she got thru those cramped quarters wearing that thing. It would be funny to see her knocking over glasses of booze on all the pretty dresses and the faces would be price-less.

  44. Crash2GO2 says:

CZJ’s dress might have been over the top, but she looked gorgeous – like a Spanish lady that stepped out of a painting.

  45. Isa says:

I love all the green! Green is my favorite color and I think it looks fabulous on brunettes and especially red heads.
My second favorite color on a red head is navy blue like Amy Adam’s dress. At least that’s the color it appears in the pictures.

I was just bitching about Mila always wearing black on another post! I’m glad to see her do so! She looks amazing!

  46. albeli says:

Mila’s gown is my fave–but it is too “old” for her.

LOVE the color of Amy Adams’s gown.

  47. Hakura says:

I just LOVE jewel tones, my absolute favorite.

While I like the color of CZJ’s dress… I’m really torn about the material. It looks like my grandmother’s curtains.

  48. birdgherl says:

CZJ killed it. By far the best green.

  49. Mistral says:

This is the first time I actually got a good look at CZJ’s dress. One of the best of the night. Mila’s is good on top (to the hips)/crap on the bottom. Moss’s is a nice colour on her, but I think the bottom sucks. Angelina’s dress is fantastic! It does not look “dated” and “matronly” on her at all. She looks old school glamour to me. The silhouette is perfect for giving a too-skinny woman like her the illusion of some curves through draping as opposed to clinging. But not cheesy curves. The dress still hangs off her elegantly (that is the magic of the shoulder pads). I looooooved the shoulder pads on Angelina’s dress AND Anne Hathaway’s dress (I think Jane Fonda was sporting them too). They really pushed the dresses up a “couture” notch when they could have been relegated to looking “mallish” (like, for example, Carrie Underwood’s dress. YAWN)…

  50. aenflex says:

Kaiser – you love a bitch in a jewel tone and I love the way you word things!

  51. MrsOdie2 says:

Can this one-shoulder thing please die? So ugly.

  52. S says:

The best CZJ has looked in years. Just stunning.

  53. the original bellaluna says:

CZJ looks absolutely gorgeous! And praise the fashion gods, she’s not wearing one of those tacky one-shoulder dresses or a big God-awful-whatever-the-hell-that-is on one shoulder! Gotta love her originality.

  54. truthzbetta says:

Good news for Zeta Jones, she looks like chick from Gone With the Wind. Bad news, it’s the “I’m wearing my curtains” scene.

Angie Jolie — Ew, looks just like second rate Joan Collins. Jolie’s been biting her style for a while.

  55. lisa says:

    Angie looked great..

Jealous people can step off. she was wearing a dress inspired in that 30’s vibe. Fashion minded people got it. Thing that I just trip over is her dress was the MOST TALKED ABOUT

lol.. Angie controls without trying.. love CZJ too.. Just thought her dress on the bottom was a bit too big. I wanted it a bit smaller. But she looked wonderful as well. Women that wore their dresses. The dresses didn’t wear them.

  56. Newbie says:

OF COURSE Jolie’s dress was the most talked about. It was hideous and the entire controversy of it all was WHY IN HELL SHE WOULD PICK IT. Probably the only thing more controversial than her outfit is the fact that she was even there. The Tourist made a whopping 65 million and brought every critic out to pulverize her weak performance. The fact that she was nominated for it was astounding.
