Did Regis Philbin quit over money and/or respect?

In last week’s National Enquirer, there was a longer story about Regis Philbin’s sudden resignation from Regis & Kelly. According to the Enquirer’s sources, it was all a Regis hissy fit over money. As it so happens, the Enquirer’s sources seem pretty on-target. PopEater reports that Regis is leaving in huff for a combination of reasons, some of which include a contract renegotiation that went bad. Also a factor: Regis thinks he’s God‘s gift, but no one really gives a crap.

There’s a new twist in the surprise departure of Regis Philbin from ‘Live With Regis and Kelly,’ and as you’d expect, it centers around money. Loads of money. Regis fired his longtime manager, Jim Griffin, right after telling viewers he was quitting, and sources say he made the move because he was insulted by a proposed pay cut.

According to TMZ sources, Regis makes between $18 and $20 million a year. I’m told it’s a bit less than that, but regardless, an insider tells me that’s “more than double” what Kelly Ripa receives. ABC producers wanted an adjustment for Regis’ new contract, and Jim Griffin went to work on negotiations.

“Regis was insulted by the offer he got and chose to leave, blaming his agent on his way out,” a television exec tells me. “The problem is the world has changed around this legend. Regis thinks he’s being pushed out for someone they can pay peanuts to. The problem is if he thinks he’s going to get anywhere near that sort of money doing another show he should think again.”

Regis, 79, announced the news on last Tuesday’s episode of the hit show, saying that he will leave the program sometime in late summer.

He apparently told Kelly about his decision 15 minutes before they went on air. While initially she was said to be stunned, she is now apparently furious and feels he showed a total lack of respect for her.

An insider with knowledge of the situation tells me that ABC wanted to retain Regis but also felt that Kelly had proven during his medical leaves and frequent days off that she could thrive without him.

“The writing was on the wall when Regis got sick and the show’s ratings did not decline,” my source says. “When it came time to renegotiate his contract again, the producers knew the show would survive with or without him and offered him way less than the multimillions he had become accustomed to.”

Regis has said he’s not quitting television, just the show he’s helmed since 1983. ABC will announce his replacement in the coming months.

I was at ABC studios in New York just hours after Regis made his announcement and an executive who spoke on the condition of anonymity told me that producers have been “unofficially testing” out possible replacements for a while, but that they haven’t necessarily found Kelly’s partner yet.

“The show can definitely survive without Regis if they find Kelly the right new co-host,” an ABC exec tells me. “For some time they have been unofficially testing out potential replacements on the show. Neil Patrick Harris, Anderson Cooper and even Kelly’s husband, Mark, have filled in; yet no one was as good as Regis.”

[From PopEater’s Rob Shuter]

It’s interesting that Kelly is allegedly pissed. It’s also interesting that Regis thinks he’s the biggest thing ever and the executives are like “So, are you going to be around later? Because we’re auditioning your replacement.” You knew it was going to be bad when just after Regis announced his retirement, there were already several big names being floated as a replacement. I really like the idea of Anderson Cooper with Kelly – they are really funny and cute together. Mark would be okay… but Kelly needs someone she can be bitchy and sassy with. That’s Anderson. Neil Patrick Harris too, maybe.

    I don’t believe this story.

Regis said last summer that he was planning on retiring soon. I find it odd that he has spoke about retiring for over a year now, and everyone is so shocked that he finally is.

  2. junk573r says:

Why would NPH even want to leave HIMYM for this?

  3. Roma says:

NPH could do both! Though maybe a bit tougher since the shows are on competing networks.

Wasn’t Kelly Ripa on like 18 shows at once?

  4. heebeegeebee says:

I think NPH would be PERFECT. It would be great to hear his baby stories!

  5. anoneemouse says:

It was clear when he made the announcement live that Kelly was not prepared for it. Bad choice to share the news with him about salary decrease right before going live, but in this world we are all just lucky to have jobs. Shame on Regis. He should retire with the millions he has left. I vote for Neil Patrick Harris – he is hilarious!

  6. kelbear says:

I will miss Regis but I think it was definitely time for him to retire. I watch the show everyday and within the past year he has taken lots of days off to do other things or because of health reasons. I really enjoy it when someone else is hosting with Kelly especially with guys like Anderson or Neil. Hell, even Nick Lachey was good on there.

  7. BLunted says:

Dude’s like 80, not sure why everyone so shocked that he is retiring.

I doubt it’s due to some bullshit excuse and sure the dude is just tired and wants to rest during his remaining days.

  8. bagladey says:

I don’t want Anderson Coooper to get tied up with this gig: He’s better than this.

  9. Laurie says:

Regis has had an over-inflated ego since ‘Millionaire’. I can’t stand him! I have no doubt he quit because they offered him less – he takes a lot of vacation and ratings are down…what does he expect? It’s not like the show is fresh and innovative. Bye bye Reege – hope the door hits your ass on the way out!

  10. dread pirate cuervo says:

Old people DGAF. I’m not surprised at this at all.

  11. pebbles says:

I hate Kelly Ripa with a deep passion. Regis is close to 80 years old and deserves a medal for sharing his mornings with his vapid bobbleheaded co-host.

  12. REALIST says:

Jesus, he’s OLD. Maybe he wants to travel the world or start a foundation in his name (ego) or buy an island and swim in warm water and read books in his old age. Why is this a big deal (other than the abrupt nature of the decision?)

  13. Westcoaster says:

Maybe they should have NPH and Anderson Cooper do co-hosting duties on a rotating basis? Kaiser is right though Kelly needs someone who she can be bitchy and sassy with and who would be able to deal with the egos of some of the guests they have on that show

  14. beanie says:

@REALIST-Absolutely! Hell, if I were Regis that’s what I would do. He is 80! He needs to relax and enjoy life! I would love to see Nick Lachey get this gig. He was great on his guest hosting and he is humble and would be grateful for the opportunity. This would be a step down for Anderson(although I luv him) and NPH is great, but I’d rather see him on his show and not burning the candle at both ends with two new babies.

  15. Laurie says:

If Regis was going to retire, then WHY did he enter contract renegotiations?? It’s clear he wanted to come back but refused a pay cut. I don’t know anyone who enters contract negotiations if they planned to retire anyway.

  16. lrm says:

i find kelly ripa absolutely hysterical on the show…which, btw, i’ve only watched a few times in hotel rooms while out of town…but she is definitely funny and quick on her feet.
regis-not so much-but you can tell he does anchor the show with his presence. he has presence.

anyway, how does he network know the show will be fine w/o him, just b/c ratings did not decline during sick leave or time off?

that would be funny-if this is how they determine major decisions.

I mean, his audience could be still watching b/c they know its temporary, and that he’ll be back…

    very strange calculations otheriwse….

  17. BReed says:

He isn’t worth the $$ he is paid..like Katie Couric!

  18. dit says:

Oh man, NPH and Kelly Ripa could bitch together. I’d so watch that!!

  19. Lady Lurker says:

    I nominate Michael K.

  20. LindaR says:

Can’t stand either one of them and never watch the show. Also, yet another old man with manicured nails that are too long. Barf.

  21. Gigohead says:

I met him over three years ago at a tennis event where I was working at an event greeting folks and I handed him a free bag with goodies and he was annoyed!! I invited him to the suite where we had free drinks at the bar and he went but wasn’t very gracious to our client who footed the bill for the party. Very grumpy old man.

  22. Trippin says:

He needs to take a nap and they need to fold up the show. It’s really an archaic concept.

  23. TOKEN says:

This is just more of the same for Philbin; he pulled the same crap about 40 years ago on a live Joey Bishop broadcast! GOOD RIDDANCE!!

  24. Earl says:

My prayer is that God forgives all
the people who have something against
old people,I think Regis ages well and
has done a lot on his show that some
young guys wouldn’t even attempt to try!
I have never seen such a time when older
people are treated so terribly!! I hope
Regis does leave the show so he won’t
have to put up with all the unkind comments about him anymore!! Regis even
if you do leave the show i know you will
do good at whatever you do. You are
    Amazing!!

  25. J Comf says:

Alzheimer’s! Think about how he has acted, forgot things over the last several years…..Ripa has been finishing his thoughts, sentences and memories more and more…..

  26. joyce says:

I think Regis should have left long ago. He pronounces names wrong, movies, dates. He is embarassing to watch. Yet he has a ego bigger then his five foot statue. Good riddings.
