Is Katie Holmes the victim of an anti-Scientology smear campaign?

fp_6588379_jacknjill_anm_02_16

Yesterday, I had a summary of two reports from The Hollywood Reporter and Us Weekly, regarding the Sundance premiere of Katie Holmes’ latest movie, The Son of No One. It’s not really a “Katie Holmes movie” though – it’s a cop drama where Katie has a supporting part against the leads, Channing Tatum, Juliette Binoche, Tracy Morgan, Al Pacino and Ray Liotta. Still, according to THR and Us Weekly, it was Katie’s poor performance that created an exodus of critics and executives, as well as out-right snickers towards Katie’ performance. Except according to Roger Friedman, that didn’t happen. At all.

It must be a funny alignment of the stars if I have to come to the defense of Katie Holmes. But she and the film she’s in here at Sundance–”Son of No One”–have been smeared and maligned by the Hollywood Reporter and US Weekly. The result is dozens of automated pickups by blogs, causing a search nightmare based on total falsehoods. I was at the press screening of Dito Montiel’s “Son of No One” on Monday. No one chuckled or snorted when Katie was on screen. No one walked out of the film. There was no exodus, no running for the doors. No “collective groan.” The Hollywood Reporter–now a tabloid effort–reported this even though the writer of the piece was not present. Then US Weekly regurgitated the material from THR. The THR editor, Lindsay Powers, came from tabloid manufacturer of celebrity fictions. So you can’t believe a word of any of it.

“Son of No One” is Dito Montiel’s follow up to his very good “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.” Like “Saints,” this film stars Channing Tatum. He gives a powerful performance as a crooked cop. Katie plays his wife. Montiel in a sense has made his “Prince of the City,” very much influenced by the legendary Sidney Lumet. This is Katie trying to break her image of a goody two shoes. She is perfectly fine. Her character curses several times in the first fifteen minutes. No one laughs. Her delivery is impeccable.

…It does seem to me that Katie Holmes was attacked by THR and then US Weekly. Do they hate her because she’s married to Tom Cruise. We can’t really pile on Katie for her personal choices masked as movie criticism. We may not agree with her personal life, but that’s another area completely.

[From Friedman’s column in Showbiz 411]

So Friedman came to the Kate-Bot’s defense, and called out The Hollywood Reporter and Us Weekly. THR still hasn’t issued anything in the way of a correction or apology, but Us Weekly did publish this report last night:

Katie Holmes still has fan in her corner. The day after the actress’ performance in Sundance flick, The Son of No One was panned — reports said there was a mass exodus before the end of the film — one of the crime drama’s producers is coming to her defense.

“Despite Katie’s few scenes, she was fantastic in the role!” producer and sales agent Cassian Elwes tells UsMagazine.com. “We’ve already received three offers on the film. We’re 100 percent behind her and the entire cast’s performances in this film.”

As for reports that people left before the credits rolled, Elwes explains a projectionist mistakenly turned on the lights two scenes before the end of the film.

“There wasn’t a mass exodus,” says Elwes. “The people who did see it, liked the film.”

That includes Holmes, 32. “She loves the film and she’s great in it,” Elwes tells Us. “She’s very upset by this attack.”

[From Us Weekly]

Jezebel asks if there’s some kind of concerted smear campaign against Katie, and if so, why and by whom? Is it because of the Church of Scientology? Is it because “Hollywood hates Tom Cruise”? Is it because people spin grand conspiracies about Xenu, auditing, lobotomies, marriage contracts and barley water? Or is it because, in Jezebel’s words, “The truth is probably far less salacious. Whether it’s deserved or not, Holmes has developed a reputation for being a not-so-great actress who looks to her husband to prop up her career. It fits better with that narrative to say her acting in Son of No One sparked a walkout, and that’s a much juicier tabloid story than a report about a bunch of people quietly enjoying a movie.”

Personally, I think it’s a little bit of both – there probably some people who take pleasure in the ongoing disaster of Katie’s professional career, and some people are even trying to help that along. But I also think Katie continues to suck as an actress, and she’s just getting parts because of Tom’s dwindling influence, and that pisses people off – rightly so.

I think its Tom c, who’s trying not to get his wife more famous then he is….He has 2 stay, on top (in they’re marriage, you know!!!)

  2. devilgirl says:

You know, she may not be a good actress, but I really don’t get the hate for this woman. So she married Tom Cruise, so they are Sciento’s, so their kid wears kitten heels and is spoiled. So what? They mind their own business, do their own thing and believe in what they believe in. Why is it necessary to pick on her for her choices. None of us know if she is or isn’t happy. You can’t make judgements on a bunch of pap photographs.

  3. crazydaisy says:

i kinda like katie holmes and i hear she’s very nice in person.

  4. Jayna says:

It’s the first thing I thought. Not Scientology, but gossip sites had a hate campaign against Katie. This was a movie with Al Pacino, for God’s sake, and other actors. And the headlines are Katie Holmes’ movie tanks. What a joke.

  5. WhiteNoise says:

But why pick on Katie? In the scheme of things, scientology and all the crazy aside, she is about as inoffensive as you can get. If it were directed at Tom, I could maybe see it, but Katie, no. And really, regardless of her acting abilities, she’s only one of many people getting favours, why should she be singled out for nepotism? I’m glad Friedman gave a more objective pic of things.

  6. Roma says:

I feel that Katie Holmes sucks as an actress and I feel that she has sucked for a very long time. I couldn’t stand her in Dawson’s Creek and pretty much boycotted her ever since but mostly because I find her to be over reaching in her movie roles. I bet on a nice, weekly drama where she doesn’t have to push too hard she’d be okay again.

The only reason I find her interesting is because I do believe that Chris Klein is the father of Suri and I enjoy theorizing on that idea.

Edited to add: I also think she had some work done on her face that hasn’t sat well.

  7. Motor35 says:

KH seems okay. like, she’s not dumping 50 cent or marrying jesse james.
she kinda minds her own business and is never in big trouble. she just seems kinda normal. except for the bazillion dollars she has and her scientology stuffs…..?

  8. Lenore says:

Maybe it was actually Tom leaking these fake reports. Maybe he scuppered the Kennedys series too. Maybe he just doesn’t want Katie to have any success without him.

Maybe he wants her to flee the world and its criticisms and stay put in their many mansions where Suri can beat her over the head with a kitten heeled shoe, forever.

Yeah, it’s a stupid theory based on nothing, but tell me it doesn’t make a crazy kind of sense. 😀

  9. Nicki says:

I think she is okay as an actress, but I have liked her a lot less since she took up with Tom! She seems like she is miserable and needs to get out of there, but who knows, really?

  10. brin says:

Her Ann Taylor ads are really pretty, at least that’s something positive.
Maybe she should concentrate on modeling for a bit.

  11. WhiteNoise says:

@Lenore – you mght just have something there! Recent BI from BG:

When some bold paparazzi asked this acting couple about a joke a comedian had recently made about the male half of their team, neither of them could muster a grin. Just icy, cold silence. However, away from the cameras, he was quite furious about the whole thing. Unfortunately for him, there’s no legal way to fight a blind joke.

On the other hand, the wife actually thought that the joke was hilarious, and had a difficult time not reacting in her husband’s presence when she first heard it. While she’s glad that she’s held up her end of the deal, she can’t be held responsible for other people chipping away at her husband’s reputation. Their relationship has been over for months now, and she is just counting the days left on her contract, at which point she can cash out and move on.

  12. Alger Hiss says:

The headline is bogus. The only person quoted in the story who is notably anti-Scientology is Roger Friedman, who routinely criticizes the cult. And he was defending Katie Holmes, not attacking her. The fact is, most of the bad things said about Scientology are true, but critics of the cult are more into facts than gossip. And the smear of Katie Holmes is from your standard gossip-mongers, not critics of the cult of Scientology.

  13. lucy2 says:

People aren’t interested in gossip about Ray Liotta or Juliette Binoche, but Katie Holmes stories sell.

  14. Sami says:

I don’t like saying this as Katie is pretty innocuous and hasn’t hurt anyone. But, IF this is true, I don’t feel sorry for her at all. She knew he was involved with Scientology when she met him. MORE than just involved, DEEPLY involved. Obsessed even. Her Catholic parents had concerns. When she was engaged, Scientology was all over the news and media. She knew the reputation it had.

And if anyone saw that BBC documentary about Scientology with that Tommy guy (not Cruise)? You will have seen just how DANGEROUS that cult is. If you are a member and fall out with them, or a non-member who merely is trying to expose them – WATCH OUT! They stalk people. They file dossiers. They find out ANY family secret that you have, no matter how big or small, even if you had a dollar’s difference in a tax return, a parking fine or a dispute with your local member of Parliament over an issue. ANY little or big thing that they can find. As much as they can find. And then they distribute leaflets around the neighbourhood, posting notices in shop windows and bulletin boards, complete with a photo of you, writing slanderous info about you and they go all out to destroy you and your name; completely and utterly. They are very very dangerous. Look on YouTube for documentaries on Scientology. It is a VERY dangerous cult.

And Kate knew this, she knew what she was getting into. Not only that, she brought an innocent child, an innocent little girl into it.

So I feel no sympathy for her if this is true, as she knew the details of the religion, and went ahead and married him. She was warned more than enough. Now, she is stuck with Scientology, even if she and Tom split up, because of Suri. So no sympathy at all for her. Only sympathy for Suri.

Edit: start with “Panorama: Scientology and Me” on YouTube.

  15. Vi says:

there are much worse actresses than Katie Holmes. i mean sure he’s no Meryl Streep but she’s no Kristin lipbiter either. I think it is partly an anti Tom/Scientology thing.

  16. mln76 says:

It’s mainly the Tom Cruise/Scientology thing. Tom poisoned the well when he jumped on the couch and no one is going to think of him as ‘normal’ again. And even though most people don’t pay attention to all the conspiracy theories about their marriage something doesn’t seem right even to Minivans. Katie got involved with him at the absolutely worst moment in her career and whatever talent or potential she may have had was overshadowed. It’s true Katie isn’t as talented as Nicole Kidman or most other actresses but she isn’t the worst actress ever.

  17. gabs says:

Shes not a great actress but shes not like TERRIBLE. I think the story was exaggerated. She was too small of a part to ruin the movie. People probably groaned when they saw her on the screen because of the scientology backlash. I doubt her acting was sooo bad that it ruined a simple cop movie, come on.

  18. journey says:

if her contract with tom is about up, the scientologists may be attacking her, so that if she runs away from tommy girl, they’ll already have started the damage control. also, chipping away at her self-esteem may make her more malleable (spelling?) and easier to bully.

bet they wish they’d done the same thing with nicole! how dare she go on to such a great career as soon as she split with tommy!

  19. Eileen says:

I think she is a bad actress. Loved her as Joey, but I don’t think it was much of a stretch for her. Her interviews are boring and she says the same thing in every one of them….I just don’t find her interesting as a celebrity or an actress so I wouldn’t go see any movie she is in. I don’t HATE her, but she’s cold oatmeal to me.

  20. JenJen says:

It looks like she may have crow’s feet in that last pic, at her age, so she probably doesn’t do botox. There, I found something positive to say about her, kinda.

  21. TG says:

@mln76 – Yes it was the couch jumping and the foolish comments about post partem depression. Any woman dumb enough to marry a man like that deserves what she gets.

  22. Liana says:

As for reports that people left before the credits rolled, Elwes explains a projectionist mistakenly turned on the lights two scenes before the end of the film
    **********

So… it was an audience of people stupid enough not to realize the credits weren’t rolling and the movie wasn’t over?

  23. Hakura says:

I actually feel really bad for Katie. All things considered, I’ve never heard of her being rude, or bitchy…

She’s not a great actress, I think we all agree on that one. But I don’t relish in the fact that she’s failed in her recent acting projects. That has to be pretty rough, especially with how public & consistent the criticism has been.

I personally only really apply the ‘scientology WTF’ opinion to Tom. I do think Katie is probably a good mom. (Suri is a little spoiled, yes, but most celebrity kids are.)

  24. bros says:

that reporter is probably a scientologist.

  25. bored says:

I liked that one old movie she was in called GO. She was okay in that one.

  26. jello says:

I feel bad for Katie, and as an actress I thought she showed real potential, In Pieces of April. How her career would have turned out if she hadn’t married Cruise is up for mega speculation. But all the hate against her is truly sad. I hope she finds her way out of this mess.

  27. MNGIRL76 says:

    @Jello
I loved Pieces of April! I thought it was a great little indie movie. She was good it it to! I really thought her career would move in a different direction after that. Too bad she singed the contract & drank the Kool-Aide!

  28. original kate says:

i kind of feel bad for her. she’s an okay actress (there are worse out there – megan fox, anyone?) but she just always looks glum & exhausted.

  29. Lisa Turtle says:

I will never understand why people defend celebrities by saying that we, the audience, have no right to judge their lives. Hello! These people make millions of dollars off of our patronage. Maintaining a public image is part of being a celebrity and making all that money. If the movie patrons dislike an actor then that actor should have a floundering career. WE (the audience) are the arbiters of taste! WE are the ones deciding whether or not to spend $15 to see a moive. If the movie patrons think that Tom Cruise is a crazy, closeted homosexual midget, and Katie Holmes is his brainwashed, spend-thrift of a wife – THAT IS OUR RIGHT TO THINK SO.

  30. TG says:

Well said @Lisa Turtle. I agree with you 100%. If we are employers than we don’t have a right to judge but if we are expected to hand over our money for a celeb than we have every right to judge and decide who we will make rich or not.

  31. Bodhi says:

I think she has gotten most of the bed press, etc because of Tom & his insanity. I mean she was hardly ever in the tabs before him, so its pretty obvious that its Tom related.

However, I have hated her since Dawson’s. I hate the Joey character & I have hated her in 99.9% of the movies, etc that she has done. I think she is a terrible actress & I have no idea why she was ever given a shot in the 1st place.

  32. irishserra says:

The top pic of her reminds me of Kate Middleton. She also makes that face a lot.

  33. Ugh says:

    @TG

By that standard we are totally her employers – if people just STOPPED seeing and paying for films, she would go away.

  34. mln76 says:

if people just STOPPED seeing and paying for films, she would go away

No one actually watches her movies. She came out with 2 or 3 besides the Dark Knight and all anyone ever talks about is Pieces of April which is about 7 years old. Did anyone see her last one with Sookie or the one where she was a bank robber with Diane Keaton I don’t thinks so. People only talk about her because of Tom.

  35. india says:

Katie’s face is really beginning to sag. Whatever work she’s had in the past didn’t last very long. She’s morphing into a haggard pig.

  36. Kim says:

Highly doubtful its a smear campaign more likely the complete opposite.

Tom probably used his Hollywood muscle to make people say the exodus. laughing. etc didnt happen and she was great in the film. He has power in Hollywood hence why no one tells him to his face what a whack job he is!

Regardless she isnt a good actress. She got famous on a teenage tv drama for goodness sakes. What roles has she actually done where she has done superb? none.

  37. Hakura says:

@Jello (27)- How her career would have turned out if she hadn’t married Cruise is up for mega speculation.

I honestly think her career would’ve likely tapered off, & that she’d have started living a more normal life, doing smaller projects every now & then, being married with a child.

@Lisa Turtle (27)- I do think we have a right to express our opinions on such things, yes.

I know some people can be unnecessarily mean at times (to be clear, I’m not referring to anyone or anything said in this particular thread), but a cost of celebrity is putting yourself out there to take any response, good or bad.

  38. cruiz2 says:

Why do we really care? She sucks anyways and “they”(whoever controls the possibilities) will! I predict more of her down our throats. Buck up…More Coming.

  39. dovesgate says:

I saw the movie about robbing the bank. I liked it. I thought she did a good job in her role. I probably wont watch the one she just did with Anna Paquin but thats because I’m a big fan of True Blood and I don’t want to watch Sookie in something else. Nothing to do with Katie at all.

  40. nicki says:

I saw the bank one with Diane Keaton. Actually, she was pretty good in it. I also liked Pieces of April and I didn’t mind the first few seasons of Dawsons (but it just got stupid, that was nothing to do with Katie!). Go and The Gift, I thought she was okay in too.
I would rather see Katie in a film than some others I can think of, but as i stated previously, the whole Tom thing is a put off. It does make you wonder about her as a person, whether she was that stupid to think marrying him would bring her success, or was she just a silly young girl who let her head be turned.

  41. nofreelunch says:

Tom’s doing a film in the city where I live, so Katie is up here a fair bit too.We don’t have papps here so celebs can walk around like normal people. I’ve seen her on our local news, looking not depressed, not like a zombie and not like she’s living in a CoS prison. I’ve seen her buying groceries, so apparently she’s not limited to barley water. That being said, I am not a CoS apologist, I think there is something in their water, and I do NOT want what they’re having.

  42. Jazmin says:

She already looks older than TC.
The reason she sucks as an actress is her constant projection as a boring, somber, uninteresting persona on screen. This is the kiss of death for an actor.

  43. Trippin says:

If it’s true or even if it’s not, she’s had a good run for being a mediocre actress. She really can’t act and has little range. Her choice of husband and religion has kept her star status afloat.
